Sevan Matossian (00:01):
We’re nothing without Kayla. Bam. We’re live.
Brian Friend (00:06):
Is that the cue to yawn?
Sevan Matossian (00:08):
What? This
Brian Friend (00:10):
We’re live. Is that yawn? Tell you how tired I am, dude. Get people excited for the show.
Sevan Matossian (00:17):
I have the whole schedule for the Rogue invitation almost. I just don’t have one of the shows for Thursday and I don’t have tomorrow show. I really want to do a Wednesday night show. Are you doing a show? You’re doing show with Spin tomorrow?
Brian Friend (00:30):
Yep.
Sevan Matossian (00:31):
Shit, if you want to see John Young tomorrow, you will not be able to see him here. You’ll have to go over to the barbell spin.
John Young (00:40):
Well, when are you doing it?
Sevan Matossian (00:42):
I don’t know actually.
Brian Friend (00:45):
Do you always do Wednesdays for Spin? Yeah,
John Young (00:47):
Every six 30 central every Wednesday.
Sevan Matossian (00:50):
Dude, this hat is hot.
Brian Friend (00:53):
I mean, I don’t know if we want talk about your hat or not, but it’s a little suspect for me
Sevan Matossian (00:59):
A few days ago when I saw Tyson Bei wearing these.
Brian Friend (01:04):
It all makes sense. That’s what it’s, that’s what it’s, he saw you wearing those shirts and now he’s wearing the shirts. This is
John Young (01:13):
Inner City Chicago Avon right there.
Sevan Matossian (01:16):
Ken Walters super sticker. What’s up baby? This is usually the shirt I only wear if I’m interviewing Avi, but I thought I’d put it on.
Brian Friend (01:26):
I should have sent you a
Sevan Matossian (01:27):
Question for
Brian Friend (01:27):
Tyson this morning, Sava.
Sevan Matossian (01:29):
Oh, what were you thinking? Ask him.
Brian Friend (01:32):
It’s not uncommon for players in the NFL, especially quarterbacks and running backs when they have an opportunity to play big minutes for the first time, whether it’s the starter gets injured in the first quarter, first half, and then they have to come into the game or they get injured in the previous game and then they have their first ever start coming up. For them to have decent or actually really good games sometimes.
Sevan Matossian (01:53):
I mean, he has the best pass percentage in the NFL right now. Passing. I mean only game in a quarter, but still best in the NFL. Yeah.
Brian Friend (01:59):
The question I wanted you to ask him was do you think that that’s sustainable? And the reason I would particularly ask is because every person, as he mentioned, the NFL is elite at what they do.
Sevan Matossian (02:10):
That
Brian Friend (02:11):
Means there’s 31 defensive coordinators that now have footage on him and they can go back and prepare if needed for him. The Chargers
John Young (02:18):
Coach watch footage.
Brian Friend (02:20):
It’s not completely irrelevant. It’s
Sevan Matossian (02:22):
Not, Hey, he’s going to be on every Tuesday,
Brian Friend (02:25):
But they can be looking anyway. I would’ve been curious to see how Hugh would’ve responded to that this week to say if he’s nervous about it. Oh, can you just kick John out?
Sevan Matossian (02:36):
Yeah, Caleb. What’s up dude? Yeah, we got to ask him that. That’s great. It’s kind of like the fight game you’re describing. Okay, listen, we don’t have time to dilly dally people. Listen, I told Brian my plan and Brian was like, Hey dude, you’re the weak link. So let’s get through this really quick here. What we’re going to do, ladies and gentlemen, welcome Katie Ganon back to the show. Have I been gone so long that Savon became Malibus most wanted and Malibu’s Most Wanted and John Young is the normal one. Listen,
Brian Friend (03:03):
That means I was already off track. I’m already off track.
Sevan Matossian (03:08):
Listen, Caleb. Hi. The Heat one App guys. It is the Fantasy Fitness Tyler Watkins Fantasy Fitness app. It’s called Heat One. The website is heat one.com. I don’t actually know if that’s true. Just
Brian Friend (03:25):
Go on Instagram.
Sevan Matossian (03:27):
Yeah, or go on Instagram.
Brian Friend (03:28):
We get the app and make sure you
Sevan Matossian (03:30):
Go and get the app and download it so you can play the fantasy app, the CrossFit fantasy app, the premier number one CrossFit fantasy app for Rogue this time for the Rogue Invitational. There it is, the Heat one app and a bunch of new features on there and hopefully we can have Tyler on tomorrow to talk about that. Okay, listen, Katie Mater’s coming on in 13 minutes before Katie comes on, I want to go through every man and every woman and just have you guys tell us something about them. So Caleb, if you could,
Brian Friend (04:00):
Let’s do something big picture first.
Sevan Matossian (04:03):
Okay, go ahead.
Brian Friend (04:03):
Just in case anyone’s not familiar with what the Rogue Invitational is,
Sevan Matossian (04:06):
Please,
Brian Friend (04:07):
This field consists of 14 of the top 16 men from the CrossFit games of hundreds, thousands plus that started and 13 of the top 19 women from the CrossFit games.
(04:19):
That’s obviously not 26 of the additional athletes come through a qualifier on both the men’s and the women’s side. I think it’s four on the men and five on the women have competed previously at the CrossFit games as individuals, so these are not the people making it through this qualifier are not random people. They’re very good. This is a totally different thing I think. But anyway, and then the last one on the women’s side is Tia Claire Tomi who needs little introduction. So this is a very elite field of established athletes that have proven themselves in competition within the past three or four months.
Sevan Matossian (04:53):
Hey, is this chick going to be there? Shelby Neil?
Brian Friend (04:56):
Yeah, she was a replacement for Annie Thor, Sutter.
Sevan Matossian (04:58):
Holy shit. She’s one of my favorite. Look, I thought I was bringing up the list of athletes who are going to be competing and I didn’t. Maybe I should leave this job to Caleb. Okay, that’s the big picture from Mr. Friend. Let’s go through these athletes so you guys can think about them a little bit. And Chandler Smith,
John Young (05:20):
He’s going to be great.
Sevan Matossian (05:22):
Where was he on the podium last year? Give me something. Give me something else.
Brian Friend (05:25):
Second place of rogue last year,
Sevan Matossian (05:27):
Jeffrey Adler,
Brian Friend (05:29):
Reigning games champion
Sevan Matossian (05:31):
Patrick Vellner.
Brian Friend (05:32):
Only person in the male side of the field that’s won the Rogue Invitational before
Sevan Matossian (05:37):
Roman Koff
John Young (05:38):
Would’ve been the games
Brian Friend (05:39):
Champion. Might’ve been the games champion. Definitely one of the top three Fittest Center.
Sevan Matossian (05:44):
Brent Falkowski.
John Young (05:46):
First time at Rogue
Sevan Matossian (05:48):
D Pepper.
Brian Friend (05:50):
Also first time at, yeah,
John Young (05:52):
Also first time at
Brian Friend (05:52):
Rogue
Sevan Matossian (05:53):
And also two times CrossFit Games Team champion
Brian Friend (05:56):
And fifth place of the CrossFit games amongst the men this year. Probably worth more than the team champion
Sevan Matossian (06:01):
Jan Koski.
Brian Friend (06:03):
He got sixth
John Young (06:04):
This year in the games without a swimming event.
Brian Friend (06:07):
I
John Young (06:07):
Think that was Jonah’s most impressive CrossFit games
Brian Friend (06:11):
Year. It was this year.
Sevan Matossian (06:13):
Has he ever won an event at the games besides swimming?
John Young (06:16):
Biking.
Sevan Matossian (06:17):
Okay, Jay Crouch, a seven favorite.
Brian Friend (06:21):
He’s top 10 at the games. It’s your eighth place. Massive improvement from the previous two years. Excited to talk about him tonight.
Sevan Matossian (06:28):
And proven Athlete Switch, kind of switch camps, right?
Brian Friend (06:33):
Lizard Ju three top 10 finishes at the games in the last three years. Zero top 10 finishes at Rogue
Sevan Matossian (06:40):
And he’s won the European semifinals
Brian Friend (06:43):
Twice in a row and I just won the Madrid championships.
Sevan Matossian (06:47):
Jelly Hosty, the big man
John Young (06:52):
Was 10th of the CrossFit games and should have gotten Rookie of the
Brian Friend (06:55):
Year.
Sevan Matossian (06:55):
Yeah. Did we ever find out why he didn’t? Do we know what happened?
Brian Friend (06:58):
Yes. It was just they decided to turn an award that used to be the same thing every single time into award that now has opinion inserted into the decision-making process.
Sevan Matossian (07:09):
So Rookie of the Year is no longer the best rookie. It’s just Well, that’s good. Woke fit, woke Fit. Bjo, VIN Carl Goodmanson.
Brian Friend (07:21):
Arguably the most experienced athlete in the field, especially if you couple that with the consistency. Top 10 in the games pretty much every year. Never worse than eighth at Rogue.
Sevan Matossian (07:30):
Who the fuck is Bailey Martin? That’s part of his name by the way. I know who he is. Bailey
Brian Friend (07:35):
Martin. He had the games this last year. I think he, he didn’t
John Young (07:38):
Win an event but he got third in the handstand walk or did he win?
Brian Friend (07:43):
I don’t think he won any of the events, but he and yellow host Jose both finished higher than the athlete that won the rookie of the year this year.
Sevan Matossian (07:50):
Who’s the guy who won a crash? Crucible?
Brian Friend (07:53):
Hatfield Austin Hatfield.
Sevan Matossian (07:54):
Yeah. Bailey Martin’s just like an improved version of Hatfield. Just a
Brian Friend (08:00):
Better version
Sevan Matossian (08:01):
Than
Brian Friend (08:01):
Him. Australian Hatfield. That’s
Sevan Matossian (08:03):
That’s perfect.
Brian Friend (08:04):
I disagree.
Sevan Matossian (08:05):
Oh, shut it. John. Will Morad.
Brian Friend (08:09):
Will Morad probably more experienced
John Young (08:11):
Than BKG
Brian Friend (08:13):
Will Morad. Well they qualified for the games in the same year. BKG has made it every single year since Will’s made it like four times.
Sevan Matossian (08:21):
This must be a typo. Noah Olsson. He doesn’t compete anymore. Does he
Brian Friend (08:26):
Got the backfill as the 16th fittest on earth this year and even though he has declared that he’s hanging it up as an individual for as far as the game season is concerned, he’s still competing individual in the off season when he gets the opportunity.
Sevan Matossian (08:41):
Mr. Ortega, good to see you brother. Good to see you. Photographer extraordinaire. Zach Zachary nipple. Nice to see you also. Oh, go ahead. What
Brian Friend (08:50):
I was just going to mention to Ortega’s question that you flipped through there, but
Sevan Matossian (08:53):
While
Brian Friend (08:53):
I was listening to you and your BFF this morning,
Sevan Matossian (08:57):
Yeah.
Brian Friend (08:58):
I finalized my, well, not finalized. I still will wait until I have wrote, but I put the finishing touches on my top 200 men in the world.
Sevan Matossian (09:06):
Oh. Where is that going to be premiering on B Friendly Fitness?
Brian Friend (09:11):
Maybe unless someone makes me a better offer,
Sevan Matossian (09:13):
Maybe we can do a collaborative.
John Young (09:14):
The answer is yes, Jonathan. The answer is yes. He’s going to make the games next year.
Sevan Matossian (09:18):
Ricky Gar, Ricky Mack as he’s formerly known now, Ricky Mack with a slight name change,
John Young (09:25):
Didn’t do the games this last year. This is the first competition he’s done since he hurt himself.
Sevan Matossian (09:33):
One of the most exciting people and one of the most anticipated to compete, I would say. I know this has been mostly objective because it’s coming from Mr. Young and Brian, but I’ll add that in there. Victor, smooth Skin, Hoffer.
Brian Friend (09:48):
Oh, you’ve touched his skin to jazz.
Sevan Matossian (09:49):
I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it from afar.
Brian Friend (09:52):
I’m
John Young (09:52):
Excited to see Victor. I wish it wasn’t this competition.
Sevan Matossian (09:57):
Is he screwed? Because this is a strong man competition and he’s a newly gymnastics boy.
Brian Friend (10:03):
He’s stronger than you think. He’s one of two athletes in the men’s side that has not competed at the CrossFit games.
Sevan Matossian (10:09):
Oh, okay. Good bit. Travis Mayer, who will be top five at the 2024 CrossFit Games according to the creator of the Heat one app,
Brian Friend (10:18):
But he’s never been top five at Rogue. He’s competed here twice before and he’s finished sixth both times.
John Young (10:23):
He’s never been top five at the games either
Sevan Matossian (10:26):
Tutor, unpredictable,
John Young (10:31):
Home run potential
Sevan Matossian (10:32):
Magda. Yeah,
Brian Friend (10:34):
He would win the Olympic lifting total against this field
Sevan Matossian (10:37):
And the only person that I’ve never heard of, Garrett Clark. Who the fuck is that?
Brian Friend (10:44):
John competed against him.
John Young (10:46):
Wow. I did
Brian Friend (10:48):
You, did you not compete at the fittest experience last year?
John Young (10:50):
Yeah,
Brian Friend (10:51):
He was a champion.
John Young (10:52):
Well, I wasn’t around him, so we were in different heats.
Sevan Matossian (10:59):
Who is he? Who is he? Who is he? Who is he? Who is he?
John Young (11:03):
He’s 16th and semifinals last year.
Sevan Matossian (11:06):
How old is he? Does he have a chance to go to the games? Is he too old? Is he washed up or is he young?
Brian Friend (11:12):
He’s in a range of athletes that you cannot say does not have a chance to go to the games, but he doesn’t have a ton of excellent competitive performances under his belt
Sevan Matossian (11:23):
Yet. Okay. Garrett Clark an unknown. I’m assuming he came through the qualifier.
Brian Friend (11:28):
He did.
Sevan Matossian (11:29):
And the most famous of all the athletes, J-A-Y-S-O-N Hopper.
Brian Friend (11:37):
He paid say that. No, he would never pay you. He might’ve asked you nicely.
Sevan Matossian (11:41):
Jason Hopper. I think we’re going to see something special from Jason, who is Jason Hopper.
Brian Friend (11:47):
He’s had a very up and down career since entering the scene three years ago and absolutely we’ll be looking to prove something this time around after not finishing where he wanted to at the games this year. I think
John Young (11:59):
He was seventh most years at Rogue though,
Brian Friend (12:02):
Right? Both
John Young (12:03):
Two years he competed. He’s very consistently seventh
Sevan Matossian (12:06):
To the women. Caleb, one of the most training at one of the most prestigious camps alongside the likes of Ma O’Brien and Matt Fraser. Laura Horvat, who does not return my texts.
John Young (12:23):
Reigning games Champion
Brian Friend (12:24):
And reigning Rogue champion
Sevan Matossian (12:27):
Emma Lawson.
John Young (12:30):
Second place at the CrossFit Games and is only on the way up.
Brian Friend (12:33):
Third place at Rogue last year.
Sevan Matossian (12:36):
Ariel Lowen.
Brian Friend (12:39):
Go for it. John.
John Young (12:41):
Oh, he’s fucking with you. John Fittest, American Fittest American woman.
Brian Friend (12:46):
Oh. Works
Sevan Matossian (12:46):
Out in their garage. Works out in her garage
Brian Friend (12:49):
And third in
John Young (12:49):
Texas. Lives in Texas. Home Field Advantage.
Sevan Matossian (12:52):
Went to my high school,
John Young (12:54):
Just keep listing accolades at school.
Sevan Matossian (12:56):
Did she go to your high school? Did she?
John Young (12:58):
Yeah, she did. I just found that out the other day. I’m friends with a guy who is in her Bible study group.
Brian Friend (13:05):
Wow. She
John Young (13:07):
Keep big
Sevan Matossian (13:08):
Dick. Keep going with it. Wow. Wow. Did you go to college with Dylan too or something?
John Young (13:11):
No. No. There’s a guy who lives in Midland that is one of coach L’S athletes.
Brian Friend (13:17):
We can stay on Lowen. I got my ass kicked by around a workout two days before the CrossFit games this year.
Sevan Matossian (13:21):
Damn. SC Fitness Lawson equals hot. Gabby Awa. The L is pronounced w Gabby Mawa.
Brian Friend (13:33):
Gabby Mag, one of the top fittest women in Europe the past couple of years. Multiple top 10 at the games and in my opinion is built for Rogue. Her skill sets.
Sevan Matossian (13:44):
She’s banging. Laura Horvatz brother Christophe. John, do you have anything? Alex? Gaza
John Young (13:56):
Another up and coming person. I think Rogue is built for Alex and we’ll get into that later, but I think Alex Gaza is going to crush this weekend. Somebody that I was not high on and has completely swayed my opinion and now I’m going to go all in on her.
Brian Friend (14:14):
She was fifth place at the games. That’s a good thing to say for now.
Sevan Matossian (14:17):
And as I learn about football, I hear about franchise quarterbacks. Alex Gaza has quickly become the franchise face of the famous, infamous, notorious, prestigious underdog underdogs, athletic underdog. Athletic underdogs, plural. What the fuck is that? Me? You got Ricky there too? The face. Yeah, but he’s in Australia. John,
Brian Friend (14:37):
You want to get a bet on the books early?
John Young (14:40):
Go ahead,
Sevan Matossian (14:42):
I’ll take
Brian Friend (14:43):
Oh no Betts, right nows. Oh wait, we’re just cruise.
Sevan Matossian (14:45):
No, no, not yet. No. We got to cruise through and get through this before Katie comes on. Emma Carey,
John Young (14:52):
Aiden at the games last year just switched camps to mayhem.
Sevan Matossian (14:59):
Danielle, the wonderful Brandon
John Young (15:04):
John, you’re killing it on the women. Danielle,
Sevan Matossian (15:06):
Brandon,
John Young (15:07):
Back multiple time. Top 10 at
Sevan Matossian (15:10):
The
John Young (15:10):
Games. Always has a home run potential
Sevan Matossian (15:12):
On specific events. Covid Survivor, Paige Powers
John Young (15:20):
One of the only mayhem athletes who’s consistently improved year after year and she hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down.
Sevan Matossian (15:30):
Ms. Emily Rolf
John Young (15:33):
Four straight times to the CrossFit games absent the year she had to withdraw. She’s inside the top 20 every year coming off her best 12th
Sevan Matossian (15:39):
A vaccine survivor. Tia, Tomi, Tia Tomi, Tia, Claire Tomi.
John Young (15:44):
She’s a mom.
Sevan Matossian (15:46):
She’s a mom. Anything else?
John Young (15:50):
Tomi or is how she is going by these days? So feel free
Sevan Matossian (15:54):
To call her that
John Young (15:55):
Or Tia Claire Tomi or that’s too much to say.
Sevan Matossian (15:59):
No, I don’t mind. Tia. Greatest CrossFitter who ever lived on the
John Young (16:04):
Women’s side for sure.
Sevan Matossian (16:06):
Yeah, men’s and women. I mean she’s active. Hard
John Young (16:09):
To say if she’s the greatest, you can say she’s the most
Sevan Matossian (16:11):
Dominant.
John Young (16:12):
I don’t think you can say she’s the most dominant.
Sevan Matossian (16:14):
She’s got to be the greatest at something. Six wins still in the game.
John Young (16:17):
I think she’s greatest games competitor. I think she’s the greatest individual games competitor. She’s
Sevan Matossian (16:20):
Got to be greatest at something. You got to give her some
John Young (16:22):
Something. That doesn’t mean peak fitness. I’ll still take Fraser. I think Fraser’s the fittest person we’ve ever seen person. But you can’t argue six verse five.
Sevan Matossian (16:33):
Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Welcome Ms. Katie Mater. Hi, how are you?
Caity Henniger (16:37):
Hey. Hi. How’s it going?
Sevan Matossian (16:38):
Good, how are you?
Caity Henniger (16:39):
You getting ready? NBA season started tonight. How on they putting you in the game? What’s going on here?
Sevan Matossian (16:43):
Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Hey, what’s with the guy with the seven foot four guy with the eight foot arm wingspan?
Caity Henniger (16:50):
He’s going to be really good. I think
Sevan Matossian (16:51):
He is. Tell me something about him. Have you looked at him? Someone was like, Hey, he’s not even,
Caity Henniger (16:56):
Have you seen his wingspan? You see how some of these guys are? Yeah. Some of these guys are training to get their shot off. Yeah, I mean he’s a rookie so we’ll see. But he’s got to prove himself for sure.
John Young (17:06):
He looks like an alien
Sevan Matossian (17:08):
And he’s not playing the position that he’s supposed to be playing. Right? He’s in a six foot four man’s position.
Caity Henniger (17:14):
Yeah, he can pretty much play ’em all.
John Young (17:17):
When the MonStar stole the talent in Space Jam, he looks like one of the monster stars versus everybody else.
Caity Henniger (17:25):
How about Tyson? We got to come to Tyson first. I start every time with Tyson. That’s pretty cool. Crazy. Great job. Super confident. I’m really excited for this weekend.
Sevan Matossian (17:34):
Yeah, I had to make a really difficult decision about Sunday.
John Young (17:40):
Very, very, very difficult.
Sevan Matossian (17:42):
Very, very. What did you
Caity Henniger (17:44):
Decide?
Sevan Matossian (17:44):
Very difficult decision. I’d rather not talk about it right
Caity Henniger (17:47):
Now. It depends on if we keep going with this phone call here.
Sevan Matossian (17:51):
Katie, can we change Ricky’s name on the rogue scoreboard to Ricky Ard? Mack is his middle name and I just think it would add some pizazz to him. I would just like to just put that informally
Caity Henniger (18:06):
Maybe if he specifically requested that.
Sevan Matossian (18:09):
Okay. It was not a big deal. It’s like something you guys have the technical ability.
Caity Henniger (18:13):
Yes. Yes.
Sevan Matossian (18:14):
Okay. Hey,
Caity Henniger (18:16):
If you hear that it’s a train. I’m sorry, it goes right by the diamond.
Sevan Matossian (18:19):
No, a bill’s in bed and he pulls a cord and it makes that sound. aca?
Caity Henniger (18:25):
Yeah, and I’m out. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (18:28):
Hey, tell me about Shelby Neil. How did she end up at Rogue?
Caity Henniger (18:33):
So she was the next person up, obviously with Annie. Congrats to Annie. I think it’s amazing. We wanted to make sure that it was fair. So we had invited her and wanted Annie to announce it to the world and didn’t want to say anything. So Shelby has known for a few weeks now that she was going to be in.
Sevan Matossian (18:51):
Okay. Okay, cool. So you her tip the habit and say, Hey, keep your mouth shut, but okay. And why wait, what’s the point of waiting in case Annie changes her mind or something? She tries to pull it off.
Caity Henniger (19:00):
No, not changing, but obviously there was 21 on the leaderboard and then there would be more questions. I figured it could be a number of things, but we wanted Andy to announce because that’s her story to tell and really proud of her with the way she’s handled everything and I think Shelby’s handled her spot with Grace as well.
Sevan Matossian (19:19):
Yeah, awesome. I’m a huge fan of hers. And what about Tia? Can you tell us about how she came in, how touch and go was that last minute? Obviously she deserves to compete and everyone wants to see her compete everywhere she’s going to go. How did you guys handle that?
Caity Henniger (19:35):
I don’t know if everyone thinks that right. I’ve heard a lot of stories that people don’t think she should be here.
Sevan Matossian (19:39):
Everyone thinks she should be there. I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Caity Henniger (19:43):
She’s had an invite for sure. It wasn’t touch and go. I think if she wanted to compete, we wanted her to give that opportunity and really happy she’s going to be here and I’m excited to see where she’s at right now. And I think a lot of people are interested to see, see the race, but super happy she’s here.
Sevan Matossian (20:00):
And when was the deadline that she had to confirm? Was there a date?
Caity Henniger (20:03):
It was sometime in September.
Sevan Matossian (20:05):
Okay. And basically she’s just, did she feel very confident or did it seem like she was unsure or how did she feel about her? I think
Caity Henniger (20:14):
Think she’s really confident. I think she’s ready to be here and I think if she wasn’t confident she wouldn’t be here.
Sevan Matossian (20:22):
Are you excited about this more so than maybe years past? I think it’s probably the greatest, most anticipated competition we’ve ever had in CrossFit in any area because we have a champ going against a former champ and they’re both arguably in their prime, but also Tia dealing with what she’s dealing with. Rebuilding herself or do you feel that too? Are you like, oh my God, I’m more excited ever to watch a comp?
Caity Henniger (20:48):
I think it’s year five, so I think we’re excited as a team just because we are five years into this thing. We’ve learned a lot along the way. We’ve listened to a lot of the feedback we’ve been given about the event, but it’s always been about the athletes. If the athletes come out and perform, it’s going to be a hell of a show and so it’s our job to make sure that the workouts are right. It’s a safe place to compete and it’s a cool opportunity for everybody. But yeah, if the athletes come out here and do their job, then everybody’s going to be happy.
Sevan Matossian (21:16):
Was it John Young who was saying that maybe he doesn’t want to see Tia compete? Was it that guy down there?
Caity Henniger (21:21):
I’ve heard there’s been a few.
Sevan Matossian (21:24):
John. John, did you have an issue with competing? I
Caity Henniger (21:26):
Could not believe it. I want someone to say that to me that she shouldn’t be here.
Sevan Matossian (21:30):
Yeah, John. Should she not be?
John Young (21:32):
I think I said that she shouldn’t compete. I said that I don’t think she’s going to win.
Sevan Matossian (21:35):
Oh, okay, okay. I don’t remember hearing anyone say she wasn’t going to compete either, but was it on a different show? Katie, were you listening to different shows? You remember
Caity Henniger (21:44):
Lady? No, I think it was on the show. Was
John Young (21:46):
On show. Maybe I was referencing She should be training. That’s on her. Not like her.
Caity Henniger (21:51):
Don’t get nervous. Don’t get nervous on. I’m getting nervous.
John Young (21:54):
I’m not. I’m not. I’m saying y’all. You’re misinterpreting what I, I’m trying to say
Sevan Matossian (22:00):
Alexander Berry can’t wait for this weekend. Money for the recaps. Thank you. Appreciate it. When you invite these people for it, the format is in general is the broad format just to go down and pick the best people who finish at the games. Can you tell us what the general idea
Caity Henniger (22:18):
Is behind the invitational? It’s part of the equation, right? So we look at top 15, top 20 at the games, but we also know that we want to qualify in at least five people from the queue, our qualifier. And then depending on if people decline, then we decide if we go to the queue or if we keep going down the games list.
Sevan Matossian (22:41):
That guy Garrett Clark, you ever heard of him before this Rogue Invitational? No, I never heard of him.
Caity Henniger (22:45):
I know more about him now. Yeah, you’ve never, that’s what’s cool about the Q, right? It’s not the games. If you look at Ricky, right? He didn’t have a chance to go to the games. He now has an opportunity to compete here with the top 20.
Sevan Matossian (23:00):
Do you have a favorite that you want to win in your head? Are you like, it’d be nice if that person won.
Caity Henniger (23:05):
Absolutely not. No.
Sevan Matossian (23:06):
Not even between Lauren and Tia.
Caity Henniger (23:09):
Of course I have who I think will win, but I’m not
Sevan Matossian (23:12):
Going to say that. Not who will win, but not based, I mean just like a favorite, like hey,
John Young (23:15):
Who you want to win?
Sevan Matossian (23:16):
Yeah,
Caity Henniger (23:18):
No, I think friends with a lot of these athletes, we sponsor a lot of these athletes and so I’m not going to go out there and be unfair and feel that way. What I want is I want everybody to stay safe and I want it to be a hell of an event.
Sevan Matossian (23:33):
If you want everyone,
Caity Henniger (23:34):
I want it to be competitive and if it comes down to the wire, that’s the most exciting thing for everyone.
Sevan Matossian (23:41):
Let me push back on the safe thing. If you wanted it to be safe, why would you have a deadlift event?
Caity Henniger (23:46):
Oh, come on. A
Sevan Matossian (23:47):
One rep Max deadlift. These guys should not be doing a one rep.
Caity Henniger (23:51):
Oh, come on.
Sevan Matossian (23:52):
No, no. Too dangerous. Too dangerous. Stepan, if you want
Brian Friend (23:55):
Us to push back on that, they’ve done the CrossFit total at the games several times and that involves a deadlift plus other two other lifts in a very confined time window in the rain.
Sevan Matossian (24:06):
Was there any concern about the deadlift? Like, oh my god, you’re going to bring these guys. You’re like, man, they’re fucking professionals.
Caity Henniger (24:12):
They’re professionals. They know where their limits are. If they want to test that, that’s on them. If they want to hold back knowing they have more events to go, then that’s on them as well.
Sevan Matossian (24:23):
Are there any surprises where we think it’s going to be a deadlift with the bar and it’s going to be a deadlift with a different implement. Study your face people Study your face. Study your face. Study
Caity Henniger (24:31):
Your face. We haven’t released everything. We haven’t released everything. I’ll leave it at that.
Sevan Matossian (24:34):
Did she twitch? But it could be. We could be. It’s that just because you say deadlift doesn’t mean we know what it is.
Caity Henniger (24:43):
Correct. Alright. But you guys can talk about all kinds of possibilities. I know that’s what’s going to happen as soon as I get off of here.
Sevan Matossian (24:49):
Absolutely. I saw you twitch a little bit. So today I purchased my premier package for $25 so I can get the different angles and then someone said, Hey dude, can you send me the link? And I’m like, can we do that or can we share links? Is that what No, no. You guys got some security for that?
Caity Henniger (25:08):
Yep. Alright,
Sevan Matossian (25:13):
Ladies and gentlemen, Katie, he owner of Rogue Fitness and basically this is your baby, the Invitational too, right? You’re the director of this project and I would like to invite you if you can, with no pressure to get some posts shows with you. I’ll be bugging you and sending you links at the end of every evening. Maybe we got evening talks with you on the hill last year. Maybe we could do that again.
Caity Henniger (25:36):
Yeah, let’s do it.
Sevan Matossian (25:37):
Awesome. Do you have anything? Do you want to apologize for anything, John?
Brian Friend (25:42):
No, I’m talking about what’s good for T in winning the games.
Sevan Matossian (25:46):
Okay, fine.
Caity Henniger (25:47):
I wasn’t even talking about you, but it’s okay. I mean, look, I hope it’s going to be a great event. We have some stuff we haven’t put out there yet. Obviously there’s been some weather in the area. We have contingencies throughout the weekend that we’ve already been talking about, but we’re really excited. Like you said, the field is stacked. I mean, what more could you ask for?
Brian Friend (26:06):
Dude, it
Sevan Matossian (26:06):
Is insane. Patrick Clark has a great suggestion, Katie. Oh, this is a great idea. Ms. Henneger, can you have the Dave Castro demo? The deadlift?
Caity Henniger (26:15):
He’s pretty good at the deadlift. Yeah, maybe he’ll come out here and do it for us.
Sevan Matossian (26:19):
You are going to have, it’s very rare for Dave to go to outside events and he is going to the event, right?
Caity Henniger (26:28):
I think he’s going to be here. Yeah,
Sevan Matossian (26:29):
Maybe. Yeah, he told me he was. Alright. Brian, is there anything you’d like to say to Katie?
Brian Friend (26:34):
I’ll see you tomorrow.
Caity Henniger (26:36):
See you tomorrow.
Sevan Matossian (26:37):
Alright Katie, thank you very much for coming on.
Caity Henniger (26:39):
Thanks.
Sevan Matossian (26:39):
We’ll be watching closely.
Brian Friend (26:40):
Thanks Katie.
Sevan Matossian (26:41):
And judging,
Caity Henniger (26:43):
Of course you will.
Sevan Matossian (26:44):
And criticizing, yes. Thank you.
Caity Henniger (26:46):
See you have fun guys.
Sevan Matossian (26:47):
Bye. Damn. We’re lucky.
John Young (26:50):
I didn’t know you would’ve just put me in the spot like that. Didn’t,
Sevan Matossian (26:54):
I didn’t know shit. I was taking her lead. I didn’t know she was going to ask Pound. You either. I didn’t know, but I was like, fuck if we’re going to pass pound John A. Little bit.
John Young (27:02):
Started doing a lot more barbell spin shows after that.
Sevan Matossian (27:10):
What is this Malibu’s Most Wanted vibe? That’s the second one we’ve got. I don’t even know that show.
John Young (27:15):
It’s a movie.
Brian Friend (27:16):
Caleb will pull something off for you.
Sevan Matossian (27:19):
Okay. Did we make it through the women’s? No. Okay, let’s go back to,
Brian Friend (27:25):
We were so close. We so
Sevan Matossian (27:26):
Close. Okay, let’s go back to the women’s division and I think we finished
John Young (27:30):
It because the last one was T on that list. No, we didn’t do Elena Carow. Wow. Maybe this is wrong. Okay, well hold on.
Sevan Matossian (27:38):
Hey, that was impressive though. I liked how Caleb, how you pivoted and tried to go to pictures.
John Young (27:43):
Yeah, I found it and I was like, wow, this is genius.
Sevan Matossian (27:46):
That was cool.
John Young (27:47):
It’s not right.
Sevan Matossian (27:49):
Austin Hartman, Mr. Young is used to the ass Poundings. He can handle it. Fair enough. Will Branstetter Stevon looks like prison, Mike.
Brian Friend (27:58):
That’s the one we were talking about before. The show will Thank you. Before we went
John Young (28:02):
Live, we made that reference.
Sevan Matossian (28:04):
Okay. Ms. Karen Fva
John Young (28:08):
14th at the Games, I believe has a four 20 deadlift somewhere around there. Maybe it’s 4 37 or something like that. I think she’s going to surprise a lot of people. I think a lot of people don’t know her name and they should know her name. She’s been in the game for a while and I think she’s going to shock a lot. They
Brian Friend (28:28):
Better know her name. I’ve been talking about her since 2019.
John Young (28:30):
I know you have. I know you have.
Sevan Matossian (28:32):
Who’s better? Her? Emma Tall
John Young (28:34):
Her,
Brian Friend (28:37):
She’s been more consistently good over the years. Emma did beat her this year at the games, but it was kind of first time. She’s beat her on a major stage, so I’d say Karen’s better.
Sevan Matossian (28:49):
And does Karen have the cotton? Does Kain have the best deadlift in the bunch?
John Young (28:59):
No. There are like four girls with four 15 plus. She’s one of them, but I don’t,
Brian Friend (29:09):
It’s
John Young (29:09):
Going to be hard to
Brian Friend (29:09):
Pick against dude. We’ll talk about the deadlift. I mean it is talk when we
John Young (29:12):
Get it there, when we get there.
Sevan Matossian (29:14):
Dude, I was listening to the Lone Ranger podcast today and Lauren Kalil has a better deadlift than I do.
Brian Friend (29:21):
Lauren’s pretty strong.
Sevan Matossian (29:22):
Yeah, crazy. Bethany Flores.
Brian Friend (29:25):
Bethany Flores made a return to competition this year. Really unknown what she can do on the strength side, but she’s great at mono structural and gymnastics.
Sevan Matossian (29:36):
Terrified of the deadlift, her and Danielle. Brandon terrified. I heard Annie Thor’s daughter’s not pregnant. She just saw a deadlift and pulled out.
John Young (29:45):
Annie’s pretty good at deadlift.
Sevan Matossian (29:46):
She’s scared though. Paige Za. Great. Anyone who has a podcast, invite her on. Great guest down to Earth. Cool.
John Young (29:58):
18th at the game slash.
