Sevan Matossian (00:00):
Brand new again. I’m like, oh shit. Is my audio all jacked up? Man, your audio is good.
Kyra Milligan (00:05):
Your background’s different. Where are you at?
Sevan Matossian (00:07):
I’m at Greg’s house in Idaho.
Kyra Milligan (00:11):
Well, that’s fun. What do you do out there?
Sevan Matossian (00:13):
Nothing
Kyra Milligan (00:14):
That’s even better.
Sevan Matossian (00:15):
Today. I did a two podcast. I napped twice. We got in the car to drive somewhere and then we couldn’t really drive anywhere. There was too much ice on the road. Yeah, the house is like 12 or 13,000 square feet. I didn’t see my kids all day. I had like eight sparkling waters. It’s been just nuts.
Kyra Milligan (00:33):
Nap, sparkling waters, little bit of snow. Yeah. And two podcasts. Snow,
Sevan Matossian (00:38):
Snow, a great day. And three podcasts. Even a nighttime one with Ver Milligan.
Kyra Milligan (00:41):
Nice. The best one. Just kidding.
Sevan Matossian (00:44):
Husband Best is pretty cool. No, no, no. I think it’s going to be the best one too. Hey, how is your audio? So good. What are you using? Do you have earbuds in? Why is your audio so good?
Kyra Milligan (00:53):
Yeah, I have beats in, I’m in Keeper’s studio work space, so he’s the ring camera here. Beats headphones.
Sevan Matossian (01:02):
Yeah, this is incredible. Could you pull your hair up so I could see ’em? Dang. Are they new? I cannot believe how good your audio is.
Kyra Milligan (01:09):
I’m pretty, that’s nuts. I’m pretty old. I actually think one of our dogs ate one of them at one time, so
Sevan Matossian (01:18):
Yeah. Dang. It sounds great. So many people have tried so many different things. And does her audio sound crazy? Good to you guys? It’s nuts. Better than the Just Beats. Okay. It’s okay.
Kyra Milligan (01:33):
It’s probably my voice. Audio
Sevan Matossian (01:33):
Good for you.
Kyra Milligan (01:34):
Seven. It’s fine.
Sevan Matossian (01:37):
Do they call Ke for Chief Keith?
Kyra Milligan (01:40):
They do. Hi, chief Ke.
Sevan Matossian (01:42):
Alright. Alright. Where are you?
Kyra Milligan (01:48):
I’m in Vegas.
Sevan Matossian (01:50):
Okay. Las Vegas, California, Nevada. Is that home for you?
Kyra Milligan (01:53):
Yeah, it’s home. It’s been home for the last two plus years I think.
Sevan Matossian (01:59):
And where were you born?
Kyra Milligan (02:00):
Well, I was born in Utah, but I went to college in Salt Lake,
Sevan Matossian (02:06):
Utah also. So you’re born and raised, so you’re Mormon?
Kyra Milligan (02:09):
No, but Born is in Utah. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (02:12):
No shit. What’s that? So you’re a foreigner. You’re a foreigner in a foreign land, right?
Kyra Milligan (02:19):
I felt like it, yeah. My entire, so I grew up in a really small town. Graduating class is 22, but yeah,
Sevan Matossian (02:26):
22. 22 in your high school class?
Kyra Milligan (02:29):
22 in my high school class and only two of us were not Mormon.
Sevan Matossian (02:34):
Wow. Crazy. Is it cool? Is it fine or are you considered the weirdos and you guys have to play by yourself and stuff?
Kyra Milligan (02:41):
No, I think growing up we were probably considered weirdos for sure, but now everything is great there. People are way more accepting and it’s a cool place to live now. But when I went to Salt Lake, it was nice there. I definitely loved moving away from home.
Sevan Matossian (03:00):
What’s the name of the town you lived in?
Kyra Milligan (03:01):
Orville. It’s down by Zion National Park. It was like 12 miles from the eastern entrance
Sevan Matossian (03:07):
Order. Like O-R-D-E-R-V?
Kyra Milligan (03:09):
Yeah,
Sevan Matossian (03:10):
Orville. And how did your parents end up in Utah in Orville?
Kyra Milligan (03:15):
My dad was a military kid, so they moved around a ton and then I can’t remember at what age, but he found this family that absolutely loved him and he just decided like, Hey, I’m moving in with you guys. And they took him in as his own and he just stayed there.
Sevan Matossian (03:31):
Say that again, you broke up a little bit. Whose family took him in?
Kyra Milligan (03:35):
Just a family that loved my dad. They decided that he was now one of them and he just ended up living with them. He didn’t want to move anymore.
Sevan Matossian (03:44):
Did he end up marrying one of their daughters and that’s your mom?
Kyra Milligan (03:46):
No, he actually, my mom owned a Best Western and he ended up working for her and that’s how they met.
Sevan Matossian (03:55):
Wow. Your mom owned a Best Western? Whenever I think of people owning hotels in small, in the Best Western was in Orville,
Kyra Milligan (04:03):
Mount Carmel. Same thing, same small town.
Sevan Matossian (04:07):
And how close is it to Orville?
Kyra Milligan (04:09):
Five miles.
Sevan Matossian (04:11):
Wow. How does your mom end up owning a Best Western? She’s seen some crazy shit. I bet.
Kyra Milligan (04:17):
I think she was just born into it. It’s always been in my family for a while, so I worked since I was like five.
Sevan Matossian (04:25):
You worked at the Best Western too?
Kyra Milligan (04:27):
I worked there. The Chevron, we have a golf course and everything, so all of us kids were put to work early.
Sevan Matossian (04:34):
So the family has a Chevron, a golf course, and a Best Western.
Kyra Milligan (04:40):
Yep.
Sevan Matossian (04:42):
And what did your dad do at the Best Western?
Kyra Milligan (04:44):
So he manages it. He basically runs the Chevron and then the Best Western part. And then there’s a restaurant gift shop part, and the other part of my family runs that small family
Sevan Matossian (04:57):
Business. Does the gift shop have little pocket knives and little flashlights and all key chains that have nail clippers and shit like that?
Kyra Milligan (05:05):
Yeah, the weirdest things. The Rock can’t, the rock Chocolate in a jar. Anything you can think of, they have it.
Sevan Matossian (05:12):
Oh, my kids would love that. We just drove 1600 miles or whatever and we stopped at every love’s. And I think I spent like $300 on little pocket knives and nail clippers and flashlights and all the dumb shit you could. Every time we stopped, they jumped out and picked something.
Kyra Milligan (05:26):
That’s okay. If it keeps them entertained on that long of a car ride, $5 is worth it.
Sevan Matossian (05:31):
Not a peep. Hey, but what did your dad do at the Best Western when he first started there?
Kyra Milligan (05:38):
I think he worked at the Chevron, the gas station, so he just worked as a cashier.
Sevan Matossian (05:45):
That’s crazy. Oh, hold on a sec. Victoria, who is this? She’s cute. We’re getting to it. Yeah. Hi. Hey. Hey. What’s up? Hi. We’re getting Vitor chill. We’re getting to it easy. Don’t be so aggressive. We’re trying to figure out who she is. When you say your mom owned the Best Western, did she outright own it or She owned it with three of her siblings.
Kyra Milligan (06:08):
Owned it with her siblings? Yeah, siblings, extended family type thing. And so my dad owns it now and he owns it with some of my mom’s siblings.
Sevan Matossian (06:19):
Is your mom still alive?
Kyra Milligan (06:20):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (06:21):
Yeah. Okay. And they’re still together?
Kyra Milligan (06:23):
No.
Sevan Matossian (06:24):
Oh, wow. But they still work together?
Kyra Milligan (06:26):
No, no, no. She’s out of the picture now, but my dad owns it. He does great down there. Yeah,
Sevan Matossian (06:32):
But with her family. Wow. Wow. I was just thinking imagine getting a job at the Best Western and then hooking up with the owner. I mean, that’s just a score your dad scored.
Kyra Milligan (06:48):
Sure. He probably flirt with you for sure. My dad’s a big flirt.
Sevan Matossian (06:53):
It’s like maybe you’re doing the same thing. It was key for your coach before he was your boyfriend.
Kyra Milligan (07:00):
Maybe Paul
Sevan Matossian (07:01):
In your dad’s footsteps, you’re trying to get a piece of the gym.
Kyra Milligan (07:04):
He was definitely my boyfriend ish thing, and then he started coaching me and then I think we started dating.
Sevan Matossian (07:12):
Wow. I want to go back to the family thing in a second before, but I want to talk about your relationship with Keefer too. Do you think you’re going to end up in Orville? You and Keefer will be working at the No,
Kyra Milligan (07:28):
Absolutely not. I graduated high school in 2014 and I think I’ve been home twice since then. Oh,
Sevan Matossian (07:34):
Okay. When you go home, do you stay at the Best Western?
Kyra Milligan (07:37):
No, I stay with my dad.
Sevan Matossian (07:39):
Okay. You and Keefer don’t get a room at the Best Western?
Kyra Milligan (07:41):
I have actually never taken him home yet.
Sevan Matossian (07:44):
Oh, wow.
Kyra Milligan (07:45):
I know
Sevan Matossian (07:46):
How long. Wait, he’s, he’s a catch. He’s a prize specimen.
Kyra Milligan (07:50):
No, my dad’s met him multiple times. My dad was up yesterday. He would rather come drive and see us than us go there. There’s just not a lot to do down there.
Sevan Matossian (07:59):
Right. He wants to get out of the small town. Who stays at the best Western in Orville? What’s there to do there? Why are people going there?
Kyra Milligan (08:06):
Zion National Park. So it’s in the heart of all the parks. You have Bryce Canyon, grand Canyon, and Zion. So it’s the perfect location. So a lot of tourists.
Sevan Matossian (08:15):
Okay. Plug for the best Western, anyone who’s going to Zion and you could throw Kyra’s name out and get 5% discount on your room.
Kyra Milligan (08:23):
Seriously. It’s my favorite thing when people go down there and they’re like, oh, because my dad will usually be repping one of my shirts or one of my sponsor shirts and they’ll point it out and then they’ll just usually start talking and he loves it. He doesn’t do CrossFit himself, but he will come to every single one of my competitions, so he knows everything that happens and he loves bragging about me.
Sevan Matossian (08:44):
Yeah. Hell yeah. I would love bragging about you too. I hope I can brag about my kids more as they get older. What’s the biggest competition you’ve been in? Kyra
Kyra Milligan (08:53):
Rogue Invitational.
Sevan Matossian (08:56):
And what year was that? Was that this year?
Kyra Milligan (08:58):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (08:59):
And how did you do?
Kyra Milligan (09:01):
I mean, fine, not great, but fine against all of them. I think I got 18th. I took three top eight finishes I believe, and then didn’t do great on the other ones, but it was cool to be out there.
Sevan Matossian (09:19):
And is that your first time at Rogue?
Kyra Milligan (09:22):
Yeah, first time trying. First time doing it. So last year I went and watched it and I told everybody I was going to be out there to compete. I literally even posted about it. I was like, one of these years I’m going to be out here. And then it happened this year, so it was a really cool thing for me.
Sevan Matossian (09:38):
And how old are you?
Kyra Milligan (09:40):
I’m 26.
Sevan Matossian (09:42):
I saw in 2000, your first post on your Instagram was from 2016? It was from 2016. And I can’t remember the movement, but I think it was a squat, clean and jerk maybe, and it was 180 pounds. And I was like, oh wow. That’s insane.
Kyra Milligan (09:58):
I had somebody staying with us his last two weeks and we both went on a deep dive at our Instagrams. So I know exactly what you’re talking about.
Sevan Matossian (10:06):
Yeah. Well, what happened to all your posts before then is did you just get on Instagram late or did you get rid of all this shit? Most people came on around 2012.
Kyra Milligan (10:17):
I actually have my personal account and then one of the coaches at my first box, he told me I should start a CrossFit account. So this was my separate one.
Sevan Matossian (10:28):
Are you glad you did that?
Kyra Milligan (10:29):
Yeah, I thought it was going to be a really horrible thing, but he was like, it’s going to keep you accountable. Something for you just to do. And turns out it was one of the best things that I ever did.
Sevan Matossian (10:41):
Yeah. And who came up with the name Quads? Like Kyra,
Kyra Milligan (10:46):
My old first box coach. His name’s Steph.
Sevan Matossian (10:51):
And did he steal that from biceps? Like Briggs?
Kyra Milligan (10:55):
Probably actually. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (10:57):
Yeah. It’s awesome. Yeah, and she stole it from someone. It’s awesome. Yeah,
Kyra Milligan (11:02):
But when he said it I was like, I guess that makes sense. I can’t not do that.
Sevan Matossian (11:08):
Barry, Barry. Oh, oh. Hi, Kyra. Barry. Barry’s a regular listener of the show. He likes to
Kyra Milligan (11:15):
Oh, for sure. Don’t worry. Keefer watches your show all the time. I know all of your regular comments.
Sevan Matossian (11:20):
Okay, good. Okay, good. I got to have Keefer on
Kyra Milligan (11:22):
Too. You should. He would love it.
Sevan Matossian (11:27):
You’re with underdogs.
Kyra Milligan (11:29):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (11:32):
Let’s go back to Kyra as a young little girl. Do you have siblings?
Kyra Milligan (11:37):
I do. I have two older sisters and then a little brother.
Sevan Matossian (11:42):
Okay, so you’re smashed in the middle there?
Kyra Milligan (11:46):
Yeah. Favorite child for sure.
Sevan Matossian (11:48):
Oh yeah, that’s what Dylan told me. Ariel’s husband told me he was the favorite child too. I wonder if I’m the favorite child. I never thought of that. If I’m the favorite child, you’re the favorite child to both your parents.
Kyra Milligan (12:00):
Oh, for sure. Yeah. In my dad’s phone it literally says favorite child. I put it there, but he hasn’t changed it.
Sevan Matossian (12:06):
Wow. Did that damage the other three kids?
Kyra Milligan (12:09):
No, they’re fine. They know my dad always, so he always wanted a boy. And so he got us three girls first and then he wanted a boy to be the athlete. And I’m the only athlete now in the family, so they know that I’m the favorite.
Sevan Matossian (12:25):
You did it. Alright. And tell me about childhood. Were you an athlete at a young age?
Kyra Milligan (12:31):
I played basketball, so I did basketball. I did gymnastics for a long time. You wouldn’t be able to tell with my CrossFit experience, but did gymnastics, but basketball was my favorite thing.
Sevan Matossian (12:42):
And how long did you do gymnastics?
Kyra Milligan (12:44):
I think until I was, I would say 14.
Sevan Matossian (12:50):
And you started when?
Kyra Milligan (12:52):
Probably as early as you can start.
Sevan Matossian (12:55):
Four or five, three. Four or
Kyra Milligan (12:56):
Five, yeah, something like that. When I started getting good, my dad would drive me an hour and a half to a really good place twice a week for it.
Sevan Matossian (13:07):
Wow, that’s crazy. And you were consistent 11 years of just consistent gymnastics?
Kyra Milligan (13:13):
I think so. Sounds about right. I can’t walk on my hands. It’s actually one of my worst things in CrossFit, so it didn’t really do much for me
Sevan Matossian (13:23):
In traditional gymnastics training. But you guys don’t spend much time upside down on your hands though, right?
Kyra Milligan (13:28):
Yeah, you do.
Sevan Matossian (13:29):
You do.
Kyra Milligan (13:30):
Look, I did when I was a kid.
Sevan Matossian (13:33):
Even walking on your hands, you do that in traditional gymnastics?
Kyra Milligan (13:36):
I think so. At least we did. But again, came from a small town, we probably did stuff weird.
Sevan Matossian (13:42):
Yeah. And did you compete?
Kyra Milligan (13:44):
No.
Sevan Matossian (13:47):
But basketball, you competed?
Kyra Milligan (13:48):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (13:49):
And how long did you do that?
Kyra Milligan (13:53):
Until I graduated high school, I actually ended up getting a scholarship for college. It was only for a community college and I already had my associate, so I didn’t take it, but it was probably one of my biggest regrets was not going to do that.
Sevan Matossian (14:07):
Tell me how come why?
Kyra Milligan (14:09):
It’s one of my biggest regrets.
Sevan Matossian (14:11):
Yeah. Why do you think you should have done that?
Kyra Milligan (14:13):
Because it would’ve just been cool for the experience, but I was thinking more so like, well, I already have my associates. I don’t want to go to community college and just take classes to take classes. I just want to get my degree and start becoming a big kid and get a house, all that stuff. And now looking back, I’m like, I really should have done that. It would’ve been really cool.
Sevan Matossian (14:33):
What did you do instead when you turned 19? I am guessing 19 or 20. What did you do instead?
Kyra Milligan (14:40):
So I graduated when I was 17 and then I am now a dental hygienist.
Sevan Matossian (14:44):
Okay. So you graduated at 17 and then rushed through to get your associate’s degree. You got it quick?
Kyra Milligan (14:52):
My bachelor’s? Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (14:53):
Your bachelor’s degree. Oh, okay. You went up to college up at Salt Lake City. And then how did you get the scholarship from there? After you got your bachelor’s degree, then you got your scholarship to City College?
Kyra Milligan (15:04):
No, no, I got it when I was in high school, so I could have
Sevan Matossian (15:07):
Went.
Kyra Milligan (15:07):
Oh, okay. I could have went to, I think it was Denver or something to go play. Just again, a community college still would’ve been fun, but instead I just wanted to go and get my degree.
Sevan Matossian (15:18):
And how does that work? You would’ve gone there, the community college basketball program would’ve been two years and then you would’ve gone to get gone to get your bachelor’s? Yeah. Were you good at school?
Kyra Milligan (15:29):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, I definitely wasn’t straight, but I didn’t really have to study until I went to college. When you have a graduating class of 22, you all just kind of pass easily.
Sevan Matossian (15:42):
Okay. Okay. Damn. I needed one of those. I think I a graduating class of like 800 or something. I did not graduate easy. I barely graduated. Are you cleaning teeth now?
Kyra Milligan (15:54):
Yep. I usually just work on Mondays. Not a lot during the season, but I’ll try to work a lot on Mondays and Thursdays for our rest days.
Sevan Matossian (16:05):
Do people request you?
Kyra Milligan (16:08):
No. Well, so I have two offices that I work for and I’ll just text them and I’ll say, Hey, I’m available this day and this time. And then they’ll fill up their schedule for me for the people who either really like me or people who are on the wait list. So it’s pretty nice.
Sevan Matossian (16:24):
Yeah, that is nice. I like having the same person over and over.
Kyra Milligan (16:29):
Oh yeah. When I was doing it full time, I loved my patients. You did? When I had to move from Salt Lake and came up here, I think I cried with four of them saying goodbye. Oh
Sevan Matossian (16:41):
Wow. Wow, wow. That’s a pretty tedious job. That’s like you’re really focused and you’re kind of in a weird body position for shitload of hours, right?
Kyra Milligan (16:56):
Yeah. Lots of hours bent over. But I love it. I actually really like to talk with people who can’t talk back and then I can just keep talking.
Sevan Matossian (17:06):
Oh, I’m coming out with a tooth powder.
Kyra Milligan (17:11):
Really?
Sevan Matossian (17:12):
Have you ever brushed with tooth powder?
Kyra Milligan (17:13):
I haven’t.
Sevan Matossian (17:15):
Wow.
Kyra Milligan (17:16):
You’ll have to send it to me and I’ll give you my honest feedback.
Sevan Matossian (17:18):
Yeah. Wow. So I did a deep dive into fluoride and it does increase the enamel on your teeth.
Kyra Milligan (17:29):
It increases the strength. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (17:32):
But it’s a straight neurotoxin. It’s just straight poison. In all the studies and all the kids that OD’ed on fluoride, they all had a lower IQ of six points. It’s crazy. It’s like it was unequivocal. There was no, well, those 10 kids, no, it was just thousands. You know what I mean? I can’t wait to show you the tooth powder. You got to look in the tooth powder afterwards. I’m going to send you a link, but I’m also going to send you some tooth powder. It’s basically once you start brushing with tooth powder, you can’t go back. You won’t even believe how it makes your teeth feel. And you get the toothbrush wet. It’s going to be called, my last name is Matossian.
Kyra Milligan (18:06):
Okay. Okay. I like it.
Sevan Matossian (18:08):
And you get your toothbrush wet and you bang it on the side of the sink and then you put it in the powder. And the powder is just a crushed eggshells. Bent night clay and a little bit of salt.
Kyra Milligan (18:19):
Interesting.
Sevan Matossian (18:21):
And the thing is, my sister and my mom have the whitest teeth ever, and I always knew that they had crazy white teeth. I’m like, how the fuck do they have such white teeth? How are their teeth so nice? They’re coffee addicts and they’re like, oh, we just brush our teeth with baking soda. And I had heard that for 10 years. I’m like, I’m never doing that. That sounds horrible. And then I started getting into fluoride and then my sister got me some of this powdered toothpaste and I’m addicted. And then I’m like, my kids are going to hate this. And my kids started using it and they’re like, holy shit, this shit’s amazing.
Kyra Milligan (18:48):
Do you really keep them? I can’t wait.
Sevan Matossian (18:50):
Really? They’re just normal white?
Kyra Milligan (18:54):
Yeah, they look white from here.
Sevan Matossian (18:56):
Yeah, they’re normal white, but they weren’t normal white. I always had plaque on the insides of my bottom teeth and on the bottom they’d be yellow and all that shit’s gone.
Kyra Milligan (19:06):
Okay, that’s good. That means you’re actually brushing correctly too. That’s good. Yeah. I always love, whenever I meet somebody and I finally tell ’em a dental hygienist, they always cover their mouth. I’m like, don’t worry, I already looked behind your teeth. I know how clean you are as a human. It’s fine.
Sevan Matossian (19:21):
Oh wow. Yeah, my teeth are all, whenever I go to the dentist, it’s crazy. I think I have really shitty teeth. They’re just all, I got punched in the face and they’re all chipped and shit and fucked up. But whenever I don’t have any cavities and whenever I go to the dentist, they’re like, man, what are you doing? You have just amazing teeth. But I think it’s just I don’t eat an asshole.
Kyra Milligan (19:40):
And good genetics too, but probably that too. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (19:43):
Oh yeah. Okay. Yeah, because my mom and my sister have. Yeah. What do you mean by that? Good genetics. What part do genetics play in teeth?
Kyra Milligan (19:51):
So your teeth can depend on a lot of things, like your hygiene if you’re using flu or not. And then genetics, it just traits passed on. I’ve had a lot of patients who they come in and they do not brush their teeth ever. That stuff that you had on the back of your teeth, that’s all over every time I see them. But once I clean all that off, they won’t have any cavities because they have really good genetics. And then, yeah, and all patients, they would always absolutely everything perfect. And they have a million cavities and it’s just the luck of the draw. Wow.
Sevan Matossian (20:24):
Yeah. Crazy. I would brush my teeth like five times a day and I still would have that plaque on. And I would go to the dentist three times a year and my teeth would still just have just on these bottom ones, they would just have shitloads of plaque. And they said it had something to do with my saliva.
Kyra Milligan (20:39):
Yeah,
Sevan Matossian (20:40):
It would be like a wall of plaque. It just turned into one tooth.
Kyra Milligan (20:43):
Those are my favorite patients to clean. I love it.
Sevan Matossian (20:47):
Just getting off good
Kyra Milligan (20:47):
Chunks. Yeah, when you just hit it and it just shatters. Oh, they hate it, but it makes me so happy. Or the patients that I love giving injections, so when I get to get somebody numb, I get really excited.
Sevan Matossian (20:59):
Wow, that’s cool. I like it that You like that. Wow. What about ingrown hairs on Kiefer’s back? Or are you good at that stuff too?
Kyra Milligan (21:09):
No, I can’t. No. No.
Sevan Matossian (21:12):
Isn’t that kind of in the same family? It’s like fulfilling and detailed work and helping other people. Not even pimples. I’m just talking about an ingrown hair. When you have a black head and you pop it and the hair, it comes out and it’s just a hair that grew the wrong way.
Kyra Milligan (21:29):
I can’t do that stuff. Even when somebody will show me their bloody thumb or something, it grosses me out. But when I clean somebody’s mouth, it’s usually pretty bloody if they’re not taking good care of it. And I love it. It’s just different.
Sevan Matossian (21:45):
This guy, CrossFit says, one of your main salivary glands is right there. Sevan. It’s interesting too. There was this person in my life and whenever I was around them, I would start to salivate this one person where she too. So always she was very attractive, but I wasn’t attracted to her at all like that. But she was very attractive. She smelled, I don’t remember her smell
Kyra Milligan (22:14):
Well when you smell something and you want to eat it. Not saying that, but
Sevan Matossian (22:19):
Yeah. Yeah,
Kyra Milligan (22:20):
Smell. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (22:22):
Yeah. Crazy. And I couldn’t talk to her because I would start producing so much saliva that I always had to swallow. Oh, you not Dave Castro. Not Dave Castro. Great. Guess not Katie. Henneger another great guess. I appreciate the guesses. You guys are all very close.
Kyra Milligan (22:39):
Super close.
Sevan Matossian (22:39):
It was weird. I’ve never told anyone who, I don’t even know if I’ve ever shared that story with anyone. I don’t even think my wife knows that story. How old are you? 51.
Kyra Milligan (22:47):
Oh, so you just tell it was your wife. Every time you see your wife, you just get really nervous.
Sevan Matossian (22:52):
And I start salivating. I start having to swallow a lot. Yeah. Miranda? No, not Miranda. No, no, no. I don’t have sweaty hands or feet. I’m not, no, I don’t get any sweat on my hands. On my feet. I don’t think I’d be able to handle that. I don’t like sticky stuff or anything on my hands.
Kyra Milligan (23:08):
Iconic hand washer. I get super sweaty hands.
Sevan Matossian (23:11):
Yeah.
Kyra Milligan (23:11):
Yeah. When I get nervous, it gets so bad. When we were super young, I would never hold hands with boys when I was nervous because my hands would just be so sweaty. And I was like, oh, don’t touch me.
Sevan Matossian (23:22):
Oh, and they would think it was them, but it was really you.
Kyra Milligan (23:25):
Yeah. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (23:27):
The story of everyone’s life, they think it’s them, but it’s not. It’s
Kyra Milligan (23:33):
The other person.
Sevan Matossian (23:36):
What do you think in basketball, the second CrossFit games champ, Katie Henneger, speaking of Katie was a basketball superstar. I think she’s in the Ohio State Hall of Fame.
Kyra Milligan (23:50):
Oh, that’s cool.
Sevan Matossian (23:51):
And I think she was drafted into the WNBA. And when I filmed with her in 2008 or oh nine, her basketball skills were crazy. She can make a basket from anywhere over beams that were in the rogue gym. She could do anything. And her agility was crazy. And the reason why she probably, I don’t know if she would agree with this, but the reason why she won the 2008 games was because everything was in that four minute time domain or something like that. And she said, I think she told me this actually, now that I think about it in basketball, you work as hard as you can for, sorry, four minute time domain. You work as hard as you can for four minutes and then you always get a break. She said you would never go more than four minutes for whatever reason.
Kyra Milligan (24:36):
Actually never thought about that. I mean, just until somebody calls the time out or your coach tells you to stop running,
Sevan Matossian (24:46):
And I don’t know the nuances of the game, maybe it’s six minutes, maybe it’s five minutes. But for some reason she said the longest you would ever play straight as hard as you can would be for four minutes and then there would be some sort of stoppage.
Kyra Milligan (24:55):
Yeah. I mean, that makes sense. Somebody hits the ball, there’s bow, something like that, you’re going to stop.
Sevan Matossian (25:02):
What do you think you brought from, was metabolic conditioning better from basketball or gymnastics that transferred over to CrossFit?
Kyra Milligan (25:11):
I’d probably say basketball.
Sevan Matossian (25:13):
And what else do you think you brought from that sport?
Kyra Milligan (25:18):
I don’t know. Definitely. I’m more of a fast twitch athlete for sure. So I think that has played a huge role in it. Also, probably the fact that I hate long distance running and you didn’t have to do that in basketball, but I don’t know. And just work hard. I loved it.
Sevan Matossian (25:39):
What about the fact that basketball’s a team sport? All my kids do individual sports. They don’t do any team sports and basketball is a team sport. And you said you liked that a lot, maybe more than gymnastics, right? But gymnastics is just straight individual and now you’re doing individual. Do you miss the team part of basketball?
Kyra Milligan (25:57):
No. I would definitely say I’m more of an individual athlete when it comes to CrossFit.
Sevan Matossian (26:01):
Yeah. Okay. And what about this? What about the fact that in basketball, someone’s trying to stop you from what you’re trying to do? Love it. You do love that. But you don’t get that in CrossFit. In CrossFit. There’s no one trying to stop you.
Kyra Milligan (26:15):
Yeah. I would say your competitors, right? They’re trying to, and you used to always want to win. You want to give them,
Sevan Matossian (26:22):
Yeah, you do want to win. But what made me think of this is I remember Chris Feeler saying, Hey, I love CrossFit. I come from a wrestling background and the entire sport is about some other dude trying to stop you from what you want to do. And then CrossFit and no one’s trying to stop you. And that’s why he actually preferred the events with no weights because it was just you.
Kyra Milligan (26:43):
I’m the opposite. I prefer the ones where there are heavyweights. So you get a little bit of an okay if you stop.
Sevan Matossian (26:50):
Yeah. Okay. So is that where you’re working? Is that where you’re working? The longer time domains hardest?
Kyra Milligan (27:01):
I would say short to moderate. I like Sprinty stuff and I like probably 20 minutes. Yeah, moderate’s probably my least favorite to do those 15 minute ones.
Sevan Matossian (27:14):
And then what about even longer? What about the 40 minute ones? What about these fucking crazy Murphs that people do with the games?
Kyra Milligan (27:20):
I like ’em. Yeah. I wouldn’t say they’re my best by any means, but I do like ’em. Especially if you’re not doing it by yourself.
Sevan Matossian (27:28):
Before Rogue. What was your highest level of competition?
Kyra Milligan (27:32):
The games on a team with Mayhem last year.
Sevan Matossian (27:36):
That was with Angelo? Yeah. And who else was on that team?
Kyra Milligan (27:40):
Sam Demester and then Zoe Jones.
Sevan Matossian (27:43):
And how was that experience?
Kyra Milligan (27:45):
It was cool. It was really cool. I moved out there for the summer keeper, me and my two dogs. We drove from Vegas to Cookville and just kind of moved our life there for the team and it was a cool experience, but super excited. I’m back home, back with the underdogs and ready to train for individual.
Sevan Matossian (28:03):
What was your first competition ever?
Kyra Milligan (28:07):
Semis? Three years ago. And that was
Sevan Matossian (28:11):
2021?
Kyra Milligan (28:12):
Yeah, I think so. 2021 I did Mac, and then 22 I did Mac again. And then last year I was on a team
Sevan Matossian (28:21):
In 2022. When you did the Mac, how close did you get?
Kyra Milligan (28:27):
I actually placed 14th both times.
Sevan Matossian (28:30):
Both times?
Kyra Milligan (28:31):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (28:33):
In 2016, when you’re doing that, 180 pounds, I can’t remember if it was a clean or a squat cleaner, but you were yanking it off the ground and for sure at least catching it in the front rack. And at that point, do you know, you’re like, wow, I’m the strongest person in this gym and the three gyms in the town and I could actually do this competitively?
Kyra Milligan (28:55):
No, that was actually my first, I want to say two months into CrossFit. So I wasn’t doing CrossFit that long, but it was always pretty strong. I didn’t actually know I wanted to compete until, I’d probably say right before semis when I made it, me and three other people at the gym I was at, we wanted to put together a team to try to go, and then we just ended up doing the individual ones just for fun. And I ended up qualifying and they were like, please go. Go do it. Go have fun. And then after that competition I was like, okay, I want to take this a little bit more seriously.
Sevan Matossian (29:33):
And where was that gym?
Kyra Milligan (29:35):
That was in Murray, Utah.
Sevan Matossian (29:38):
And is that just outside of Salt Lake?
Kyra Milligan (29:42):
Yeah, it’s like 10 minutes from Salt Lake.
Sevan Matossian (29:45):
Did you ever train with Tommy Hacken? Brooke?
Kyra Milligan (29:47):
No. When he’s here, yeah. He’ll coach a couple athletes here and he’ll come and
Sevan Matossian (29:53):
Oh, he’s an underdogs guy too.
Kyra Milligan (29:54):
Yeah, I didn’t know him when he was in Utah though.
Sevan Matossian (29:58):
Wow. What a small world. Maybe I didn’t.
