Kaique Cerveny | 2023 CrossFit Games Prep

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

<silence> Okay, so you’ve been doing it since 1819?

Kaique Cerveny (00:04):

Yes. Yes, exactly.

Sevan Matossian (00:07):

And, and, and what was your, uh, what was your discipline before then? What was your sports discipline before then?

Kaique Cerveny (00:13):

Oh, well, um, I did every kind of sports before CrossFit, but I love a gym. I love, um, get muscles and work with weights and something like that, you know? So CrossFit was, uh, a kind of a kind of, uh, uh, adventure for me, because I have everyday different things to do. And this was, was, uh, I think that I really love it.

Sevan Matossian (00:47):

Uh, am I saying your name right? Kake?

Kaique Cerveny (00:50):

Yes. Kaki. Serani.

Sevan Matossian (00:53):

Kaki. Serani.

Kaique Cerveny (00:54):

Yes, exactly.

Sevan Matossian (00:55):

Kaki, SNI. Kaki. Um, did you ever think, um, uh, CrossFit was silly when you first saw it? Were you like, oh, this isn’t, um, bodybuilding, this isn’t really working out. They do Kipping pulls. Did you ever have any of that?

Kaique Cerveny (01:07):

Yes. Yes.

Sevan Matossian (01:10):

And, and, and how, and how, who tricked you into doing it?

Kaique Cerveny (01:14):

Um, I don’t know. Uh, man, I, I really love this sport. Really love, uh, I think that I, I don’t like to do every day the same thing as body builders. Do, you know, uh, the same train and things like that. CrossFit have my patient, because I can do every different things, and I can see evolution every single day.

Sevan Matossian (01:43):

Um, h how were the, uh, how are, how are the semi-finals? Uh, I know it’s, uh, you don’t, you guys don’t get a lot of places and, uh, gee is there, and I’m guessing that everyone kind, you guys get 2, 2, 2, right? Two

Kaique Cerveny (01:55):

Spots, yes. Two spots. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (01:57):

And I’m guessing that when people get there, they’re kind of like, okay, Gee’s gonna take one place. So that only leaves one spot. Is it a pretty intense semi-finals?

Kaique Cerveny (02:09):

I don’t like to, to think about it, because CrossFit can help, can happen everything, you know, just finish when finished. So, uh, I know GI and he’s a big athlete, and I consider considering that he could have the spot, but I work a lot, so I just put my job on the floor. I just wanted to put everything that I work with my coach on the box, on the floor. So I, I didn’t have any impression about it. I don’t like to think about that one spot is of some athlete.

Sevan Matossian (02:50):

Um, did you compete in the semi-finals last year? Kake?

Kaique Cerveny (02:54):

Uh, just the first workout, because I had, uh, enduring my back. So I just tried to compete, but I wasn’t able to do that, so I just, I decided to stop because I could get worse on my back.

Sevan Matossian (03:08):

I mean, what a crazy finish you took first place.

Kaique Cerveny (03:13):

Yes. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (03:15):

660 points.

Kaique Cerveny (03:18):

Amazing. <laugh>. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (03:21):

And the, and the thing is though, too, that, you know, that those guys, uh, Susa and Maher are so good that you, you kind of have to keep your foot on the gas pedal the whole week. Right. Even, even workout seven, you still have to go hard.

Kaique Cerveny (03:34):

Yes, exactly. Exactly. Was a, a, a nice workout. So, I dunno, I, I really love it. Every workout that we had on the semifinals, um, uh ha. It is just, it. I really love it. I, I think that me and my coach, we work with everything, so I’m very prepared for the season. Um, so, uh, don’t, didn’t have anything that I saw that I could have problem. No, I, I just worked everything.

Sevan Matossian (04:09):

How tall are you?

Kaique Cerveny (04:11):

Uh, one eight’s 86.

Sevan Matossian (04:16):

So I, I wonder if, what is that? Like six feet tall? 1.86 meters?

Kaique Cerveny (04:20):

I don’t know. Oh, I don’t know this, this kind of things. Okay. One meter, eight, six meter.

Sevan Matossian (04:26):

And, uh, how much do you weigh?

Kaique Cerveny (04:28):

Uh, 96 kilos.

Sevan Matossian (04:31):

Wow. Okay.

Kaique Cerveny (04:32):

<laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (04:34):

Did you, when you found CrossFit kake, did you want to go to the CrossFit games? Did you see it as a sport?

Kaique Cerveny (04:42):

Um, the, the first thing that I thought, uh, is that it’s something very impossible because I didn’t have a, a, a performance, a good performance, and something like that. So first I just wanted to go to the Brazilian championship here, and this is my first target. So I think that CrossFit games would be a consequence of every time of work, but I think that I, I had a big time to work from that.

Sevan Matossian (05:22):

So in the beginning, you didn’t quite see the mountaintop, but at some point you realized, oh, I, I can do this.

Kaique Cerveny (05:30):

Yes. Yes. I think that last year I was very prepared for go to the games. I’m felt very prepared. I did every kind of exercise, and this is something that I, for one moment of my career, I think that was a trouble. But now I’m very prepared for everything, so I’m really, I’m really, um, capable to compete on the games.

Sevan Matossian (05:58):

Yeah. You’re big man. You are a big, uh,

Kaique Cerveny (06:01):

Yeah, just a little bit

Sevan Matossian (06:02):

<laugh>. Yeah. You are a, you are a big, you are a tall, big, uh, giant. CrossFitter.

Kaique Cerveny (06:08):

Yes.

Sevan Matossian (06:11):

Hey, where did you, um, what did you compete in before CrossFit? What was your, what were some of the things you competed in?

Kaique Cerveny (06:18):

Uh, just on soccer.

Sevan Matossian (06:20):

Soccer?

Kaique Cerveny (06:21):

Yeah. Soccer. But was just when I was, was young, very young, um, professional, just CrossFit, like a professional.

Sevan Matossian (06:32):

They, um, uh, this, uh, Avon’s dog is saying you’re 6 2, 215 pounds. Wow. You’re huge. What’s the least you’ve weighed, uh, KAKE in your, um, like when you were a soccer player, were you 50 pounds less? Were you skinny soccer player?

Kaique Cerveny (06:48):

No, I was a little bit fat, you know. Oh, when I was young, yes. Oh, I was, I have one this photo on my instrument, but I think that is very, very old disposed. But I was a little bit fat, so I, uh, with the time, I just would like to, to work on my body and, um, the, the love of sports starts on the gym. So I just want to, to, to get better and better and work it

Sevan Matossian (07:19):

<laugh>. Yeah. And, and, and your parents are, were your par Oh, look at here. Yeah. Look at you as a little boy. You don’t look fat, but here you are as a, as a young man, much younger, uh, than you are now here.

Kaique Cerveny (07:30):

Lemme see this.

Sevan Matossian (07:31):

Yeah.

Kaique Cerveny (07:32):

Yes, yes, yes.

Sevan Matossian (07:34):

So, not fat, but, but not muscular. You hadn’t started working

Kaique Cerveny (07:37):

Out yet. Yes, yes. This time was when I started to get bigger mm-hmm. <affirmative>, when I was 15 or 16, something like that.

Sevan Matossian (07:44):

Oh my goodness.

Kaique Cerveny (07:46):

Yes. This foot. Yes. <laugh>. Now you can see that I was a little bit fat, you know?

Sevan Matossian (07:53):

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You were eating licorice candy. Yes,

Kaique Cerveny (07:58):

Anos. This time was when I playing soccer, and I was good.

Sevan Matossian (08:03):

You were good?

Kaique Cerveny (08:05):

Yes. Yes.

Sevan Matossian (08:08):

Wow. Crazy. What, what is, is this your dad here?

Kaique Cerveny (08:13):

Yeah, it’s my father.

Sevan Matossian (08:15):

And he’s tall too.

Kaique Cerveny (08:16):

Yes, exactly. My mother too.

Sevan Matossian (08:19):

Is that Brazil?

Kaique Cerveny (08:21):

Yes, it is. Uh, I don’t know. I didn’t remember the name of Mohu. Sao Paulo.

Sevan Matossian (08:28):

Oh, God, it looks

Kaique Cerveny (08:29):

Beautiful. The name of, yes. It’s very nice. It

Sevan Matossian (08:31):

Looks beautiful. Um, kake. So were you always competitive? Were you very aggressive and competitive?

Kaique Cerveny (08:39):

Yes. I love it. I really love with everything with my sisters. It started with my sisters, and I just brought with, for the, the sports and everything like that.

Sevan Matossian (08:53):

How, how many sisters do you have?

Kaique Cerveny (08:55):

Two sisters.

Sevan Matossian (08:56):

Are you the youngest,

Kaique Cerveny (08:58):

The middle.

Sevan Matossian (08:59):

The middle?

Kaique Cerveny (09:00):

Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (09:02):

What does your dad think about you? Uh, this CrossFit thing, you coming to the United States to compete in the CrossFit games?

Kaique Cerveny (09:09):

Oh, when I started CrossFit, he’s a doctor, so he, he, he, he had a thought about it. That is very crazy, because CrossFit can, uh, you can have some injury or something like that. But now they, my father and my mother, they really love to see me competing, and they see my discipline, my routine, and really believe that it’s an amazing thing. And they will be there on medicine. Wow. And yes, my father, my mother will be there. And they, they expecting a big thing to happen there.

Sevan Matossian (09:49):

Do you know, uh, uh, Juliana Lima?

Kaique Cerveny (09:54):

Yes.

Sevan Matossian (09:55):

She said, he says, of

Kaique Cerveny (09:56):

Course, my family.

Sevan Matossian (09:57):

Yeah. She says, tell him his cousin is listening.

Kaique Cerveny (09:59):

Yeah, my cousin, I started CrossFit with her.

Sevan Matossian (10:03):

Oh, wow. Okay.

Kaique Cerveny (10:04):

Yes.

Sevan Matossian (10:05):

Did she get you into it or did you get her into it?

Kaique Cerveny (10:09):

Oh, the same <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (10:11):

Yeah. Um, uh, tell me when, when you, when you qualify for the games, is that emotional when, when you’re down there on the field?

Kaique Cerveny (10:24):

Yes, a lot. Uh, just, just because, uh, last year I couldn’t put everything on the floor because my injury, so this year was very special for me. It’s been very special because I really could put my job on the, the floor. So this was very amazing. This, I can’t, I can’t have, uh, words for inscribe that,

Sevan Matossian (10:53):

And, and kake were you, what would you say your level of confidence was going into the semi-finals? Were you very confident?

Kaique Cerveny (11:02):

Yes. Yes. Like I told you, uh, I work, work a lot with my coats. We did everything, every exercises. So, um, yes, my confidence was very nice. I was, um, I enter on the arena, very light, you know? So I think that is what is still, what is still about confidence. You need to enter very light, no pressure, nothing like that.

Sevan Matossian (11:32):

Hey, is that your, is that your natural hair color right there and your beard?

Kaique Cerveny (11:37):

Yes. Yes. But, uh, you knows blonde.

Sevan Matossian (11:41):

And, and, and why is that? When I think of, uh, Brazilians, I think of them as, uh, black hair and brown eyes.

Kaique Cerveny (11:48):

Yeah. Because my family, uh, my old family’s from Austria, so yeah, I think that I got this, this thing of that

Sevan Matossian (11:58):

Are, are there a lot of people like that in Brazil? All sorts of different looks for Brazilians.

Kaique Cerveny (12:03):

I think the Brazilians very different in every kind of people here. You know, <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (12:08):

Yeah. Um, your parents came, or the ones that came from Austria, were they escaping? Uh, was that during World War ii? They were somehow escaping from over there.

Kaique Cerveny (12:17):

Yes. Yes. I think, what was my, my father’s grandfather. Grandmother, sorry.

Sevan Matossian (12:25):

Was she Jewish?

Kaique Cerveny (12:27):

No,

Sevan Matossian (12:27):

No, no. Interesting. Yeah. And, and do you ever see, do you, but you don’t see very many blue eyed, uh, um, uh, blond haired, uh, Brazilians, do you?

Kaique Cerveny (12:37):

Yes. Yes. Have you do? Yes. Yes. I have some people here.

Sevan Matossian (12:42):

Yeah. Uh, Omar Cane is saying Canelo, but, uh, canelo’s Mexican, but he’s blue eyes and, uh, and red hair.

Kaique Cerveny (12:49):

Yeah. I don’t know. Canelo, who is? It’s from, from Box,

Sevan Matossian (12:52):

Yeah. Boxing. Yes. He’s like, yeah, he’s like the greatest boxer. Uh oh. Uh oh. Uh, you know, who else is Austrian?

Kaique Cerveny (12:59):

Oh, oh, <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (13:01):

They want, they want you to say it. Um, could you, could you ca could you say, uh, get to the chopper?

Kaique Cerveny (13:07):

Sorry.

Sevan Matossian (13:08):

Could you say the line they want, they say they, they’re making a joke that Arnold Schwarzenegger is from, uh, Austria. And in one of the movies he says, um, get to the chopper. And this movie Predator he is in.

Kaique Cerveny (13:20):

I really know this movie.

Sevan Matossian (13:22):

You don’t know that movie. Get to the Chopper?

Kaique Cerveny (13:24):

No. No.

Sevan Matossian (13:26):

Do you know Predator?

Kaique Cerveny (13:28):

Yes. Oh, of course. Yes. Yes. Oh, the first place. This is a great thing, right?

Sevan Matossian (13:33):

Yeah. So they want you to say, could you say that? ’cause you’re, since you’re from Austria too, could you say, get to the chopper.

Kaique Cerveny (13:39):

Get to the chopper. <laugh>, it’s similar, right? <laugh>,

Sevan Matossian (13:45):

Get to the Choppa. <laugh>. Uh, is this your first time out of the country outta Brazil?

Kaique Cerveny (13:52):

No, no. I, I had compete on the water Paus, uh, on Miami twice, um, this year and last year, and I was in par Paris from, uh, a competition in 2018 was European shutdown down. I think that these three competitions out of Brazil.

Sevan Matossian (14:17):

Hey, is is the goal to, um, uh, to win the CrossFit Games?

Kaique Cerveny (14:22):

Sure. I’m not going to just be there and get the, the clothes <laugh>. Yeah. I want, I really want to, to put my best on the, the floor. And, uh, I can’t, I can’t say that I’m expecting something because we never know what will happen. But of course, I’m, I’m going to win.

Sevan Matossian (14:46):

And, and also, by that, I mean, whatever happens this year, do you look, do you immediately come home and start training for next year? Like, is this, is this your life? You, you, you are now getting, you’ve made it once and now you’re gonna be CrossFit games athlete?

Kaique Cerveny (15:01):

Yes. When I start CrossFit, I, I really started for be, uh, an athlete. So I love this life. I love this routine, and I love work every single day and see my, my performance getting better. So of course, this will, will happen, and next year I will see everything that I did, and once we improve more and more.

Sevan Matossian (15:28):

How, how old are you again?

Kaique Cerveny (15:30):

25.

Sevan Matossian (15:32):

Oh man. You’re young.

Kaique Cerveny (15:33):

Yes, I have time.

Sevan Matossian (15:35):

Yeah. Um, tell me some of the areas you improved in, um, this year, in, in the last year. What are some of the areas that you’re like, wow, I got better?

Kaique Cerveny (15:46):

So for me, my, I had something that could be some problem for me that is handstand, pushup. And we work very well on that. And some kind of workouts, some explosion workouts. Uh, I think I, I did very well. Uh, we, we working on that and I, I can say that is, uh, something that I have problem,

Sevan Matossian (16:12):

But, but, but that you, that you got better on in the last year, you got significantly better on.

Kaique Cerveny (16:17):

Sure, of course. Of course.

Sevan Matossian (16:19):

And how about your strength? How about your strength numbers, the clean and jerk, the deadlift, the snatch, the back squat? Is everything still going up?

Kaique Cerveny (16:27):

Yes. Yes. Still, we, we changed how we work with weight this year. Um, I don’t like to work with a lot volume with this kind of thing, so we reduce it, and I get better on that, on that. But I think that the most of my, the, the, the, the most area that I got some gains was in endurance, because when I had my injury, I just could work on that. I just, uh, run, um, bike and swim. So we work a lot on that. We had too much time. So I think that I improved with that.

Sevan Matossian (17:10):

And I’m guessing your, your soccer background also, uh, help helped you a lot with your metabolic ability? No,

Kaique Cerveny (17:20):

I don’t know. Uh, I think that was, so we, we didn’t work, so, uh, uh, on, on things like, how can I say that? Uh, we didn’t have a big prepare on this, this sport when I was young. We just play and I played good, but I think that I, there’s not a, uh, a good background that I could have something from, from CrossFit.

Sevan Matossian (17:47):

Uh, Bob says, um, KAKE is a good dude. Super chill and likable.

Kaique Cerveny (17:54):

Oh, nice. <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (17:56):

Thank you. Um, uh, Jake Chapman KAKE has one of those faces that works upside down. Wow. He’s saying, if we turn your, wow. Very, very bizarre observation.

Kaique Cerveny (18:08):

Yes. Yes. A little bit. <laugh>. Next, next. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (18:13):

Inga. I like him. Humble and confident.

Kaique Cerveny (18:17):

Nice. Yes.

Sevan Matossian (18:19):

What is the, um, are, are there some things that are just straight up in your wheelhouse? Uh, sleds, yoke carries. Um, is there anything that you’re just chomping at the bit to, to get your hands on at the games?

Kaique Cerveny (18:32):

Uh, no. No.

Sevan Matossian (18:34):

There, there’s nothing in particular where you’re like, Ooh, I really like that. I want to do that.

Kaique Cerveny (18:39):

No. Um, I, I work very well with strength. Things like sandbags yo or sled, something. I liked these kind of workouts. I think that we have, we need to have a very strategy to, to do these things, but I can handle it.

Sevan Matossian (19:03):

Do you have a girlfriend?

Kaique Cerveny (19:04):

No. Still not.

Sevan Matossian (19:06):

You’re single?

Kaique Cerveny (19:07):

Yes.

Sevan Matossian (19:09):

And, um, is that on purpose? You’re trying to stay single?

Kaique Cerveny (19:13):

No, no. I like people, you know, uh, I, I, I like people close to me. I, I don’t see problem. I have had some athletes that think that have a girlfriend is a problem because maybe he is, can get focused through another things. But I have a big discipline, so this is just something that could be better for me, you know? Uh, have a person, um, side of me and something like that.

Sevan Matossian (19:45):

Um, any of these other, uh, guys who competed in semi-finals, do you train with any of them?

Kaique Cerveny (19:51):

Yes. JP Jean, Pedro Baros. He’s my partner here. He, he had moved to Brazil to work with me and Andrea Pinero.

Sevan Matossian (20:05):

Uh, where did they place, did they, did they make it to the semi

Kaique Cerveny (20:07):

Finals? Uh, 10 play. 10th.

Sevan Matossian (20:10):

10th place? Oh, uh, oh. Pedro. Pedro Bar. Okay. He’s

Kaique Cerveny (20:13):

My partner. He’s getting big. He worked very hard with me. He, yeah, he’s very strong man.

Sevan Matossian (20:22):

Um, and, and how did you find him? Through your coach?

Kaique Cerveny (20:25):

Yeah, he’s the same, he’s the same, uh, quote of, of me. So when he started the open, he was ju he was just want to, to do the workouts here. So I told him just to, to come to my house and stay here for all season, and was very nice. And he stay, stay, stay. And we are living together now.

Sevan Matossian (20:50):

Oh, look, look already. Um, uh, Inga, uh, I would snuggle with him. Well, that’s very nice of her. She would snuggle with you if you, if you needed snuggling. Um, when, when you see, when you see the, these, what, what’s going on in the states, I guess, or I, I guess elsewhere too, outside the States, but you see sort of these camps of these athletes congregating together. Does any part of you consider trying that? Like maybe next year, coming up in, in, in training for a month with a large group of athletes?

Kaique Cerveny (21:22):

No. No problem.

Sevan Matossian (21:24):

Do you, do you wanna do it or do you not wanna do it?

Kaique Cerveny (21:28):

Oh, I think I don’t wanna do it.

Sevan Matossian (21:33):

You don’t wanna do it. You like, you like, you like your group in Brazil.

Kaique Cerveny (21:37):

Yes, exactly. Exactly. I prefer to, to be here. Um, I have everything that I need here. Everything. I have my coach, family, friends, I have the all extre here, and I don’t think this is, I need to do that, you know, to perform better, right. Is exactly.

Sevan Matossian (22:01):

Yeah. You have everything you need there. What about, um, an agent? Do you have an agent?

Kaique Cerveny (22:06):

Yes, I have my manager, Ulu. I think that he is watching right now, and we working a lot for everything. He, he do everything for me, and we’ll be there in the medicine for help me is always some things too.

Sevan Matossian (22:24):

Um, do you think that this year is maybe like a more big guy year than any year? I’m thinking like, it’s you, Wakowski, um, Yella, Hostey, uh, Jake Douglas. I mean, these are, these are a lot of a big men over six feet tall. Like you said, you were 186 centimeters. You think that the sport maybe is going that way? Because normally it’s been smaller men, right? Uh, yes.

Kaique Cerveny (22:52):

Uh, I saw something, some comments about this last semifinal that can, could be better for some athletes, some talls and bigger guys. But, uh, for a day I need to change my mind because I always have thoughts about, uh, I need to be smaller for compete better, and I need to change it, change it for stop to have some, how can I say, uh, uh, uh, to have some, forget this word.

Sevan Matossian (23:33):

You’ve been doing great. It’s not even, yeah.

Kaique Cerveny (23:35):

Yeah. So I need to change it. So I don’t think that it’s, uh, something that’s defined the, the sport going up, you know? I think that we have space for every, every kind of people and yeah, every, every kind of people need to work on the, and the, on the, the different exercise that could be a problem. You know? We need to be very, um, how can I say that? Um, we need to be balanced it, you know?

Sevan Matossian (24:09):

Yeah. Did you just, did you just look up a word to use?

Kaique Cerveny (24:13):

Sorry? Did

Sevan Matossian (24:14):

You just look up a word to use? Yeah,

Kaique Cerveny (24:16):

That I try to, when I, when I forget.

Sevan Matossian (24:18):

Wow, that was fast. Yeah.

Kaique Cerveny (24:21):

Holy shit. Yeah, of course. <laugh>. I’m prepared here. I told you my English is not perfect,

Sevan Matossian (24:27):

Dude. It’s so good. And that was crazy fast. Like, uh, balance.

Kaique Cerveny (24:32):

This is something that you can see on the games. I’m very fast, man. <laugh>. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (24:38):

Um, uh, Mike Pool Boy. Uh, every time I think I’m, when I look at, uh, Veni, it reminds me that I’m gay. Oh, he says you, he even

Kaique Cerveny (24:46):

Knows

Sevan Matossian (24:47):

Everyone.

Kaique Cerveny (24:48):

<laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (24:49):

Is it, um, do you get a lot of attention from girls? Like when you go to, if you’re walking through the airport, are there, do you feel like there’s a lot of females who stare at you, <laugh>?

Kaique Cerveny (24:58):

Oh my God, this question? No, I, I I don’t see the, that things, um,

Sevan Matossian (25:03):

I, you don’t see those things?

Kaique Cerveny (25:05):
