CrossFit Semifinals WEST | Day 2 Pre Show

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

Does anyone do an Irish accent besides Pedro?

@coffeepodsnwods (00:02):

Nobody can do a good Irish accent.

Sevan Matossian (00:04):

Bam. We’re live. Pedro, do Do you do an Amer American accent? Do you do an English accent?

@coffeepodsnwods (00:08):

Uh, I do accents, but they’re not very good <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (00:11):

Let, let me hear you talk like an American TV set. Can you do one? Just say, uh, hi. Welcome to the Sev Podcast.

@coffeepodsnwods (00:16):

Hi. Welcome to the Sev Podcast. Yeah, that’s there.

JR Howell (00:20):

Sevan Matossian (00:21):

Irish, fucked. Hey, you must spend a lot of time in Ireland. I can hear a little Irish accent.

@coffeepodsnwods (00:26):

I got a bit of Irish at me.

Sevan Matossian (00:28):

Uh, coffee pods and wads Pedro’s in the house. Uh, Mr. Spin is here, uh, John Young, uh, Mike Halpin, the human calculator, and of course, CrossFit Crash. Nostradamus, we are one shy of a full house. Uh, we have Caleb running the back end with his cat, uh, ass pointed at him as I can see, uh, down below. And, uh, we, uh, James Townsend will be joining us shortly. Uh, something that’s really trippy about this sport, I dunno if it’s trippy, but I think it’s unique about this sport. And you guys tell me a lot of sports you have to win in order to be the winner. Uh, like fighting. You really like the, the, the no one wants the o You wanna be 30 and oh, you wanna be 25 and oh, you want to be, you know, 17 and one. And, uh, in basketball you could probably, you can take some losses, right? And in baseball, you can take some losses. In football, not so many losses. In tennis, you can take a shitload of losses. Maybe the greatest athlete who ever lived, according to some people, Serena Williams only won 55, uh, 55% of all of her points, right? So a lot of losses, lot of losses to to in that sport. But in this sport, CrossFit, you can lose every single fucking competition. Is, is that what we call them? Competitive event

@coffeepodsnwods (01:40):

Test. <laugh> test.

Sevan Matossian (01:41):

Te test Test. Yeah. Te okay. And, and, and then still win, uh, uh, the gold, which is really cool, which is why yesterday I think that there was so little to talk about, uh, Justin Maderas. Um, can we just go to the, uh, men’s leader board? I just wanna touch on the subject and ask you guys what you think. Why are we not worried about, uh, Justin Maderas just sitting there in fourth place? E everyone’s just, no one’s like, oh my God, Justin might not make it. Or is Justin okay? Uh, Mr. Crash Jr. Howell, why are we not worried about Justin? Does that, did I explain it? Is that just the nature of the sport?

JR Howell (02:16):

Yeah, I mean, look what happened last week, right? Jeff, um, finished top 10 on every workout, ended up winning the competition. Same will happen this week with Justin. Most likely.

Sevan Matossian (02:25):

Adler didn’t have a single win.

JR Howell (02:28):

No, he won. He won event two.

Mike Halpin (02:32):

Sevan Matossian (02:33):

Yeah. Amazing. Uh, helping is, is this a problem with the sport or is this cool? This is just the nature of our sport. This is just how we do it at CrossFit.

Mike Halpin (02:41):

I mean, there’s home run hitters and things like that. Um, I mean, Tia won every event last year this time, uh, this time last year. But I mean, this is Justin’s mo. He just sits there and waits and, and continues to just do enough, uh, in the events to be able to either win the entire competition or at least qualify it and things like this.

Sevan Matossian (03:03):

John, any concerns, uh, for Justin, um, not, uh, being sitting on the podium top three at the semi-final?

John Young (03:10):

Sevan Matossian (03:11):

And, and, uh, and Mr. Spin, if he doesn’t sit top three, will you be concerned about him going into the games? If, if he, if he, let’s say he finishes this, uh, event fourth?

Brian Spin (03:19):

Uh, I, I think it draws more questions. I, I mean, you see, there’s a lot of guys that are, that are up there. I mean, Adler, I think Hopper, I mean, last week was stacked and they showed very, very strong performances. Um, if, if Maderas doesn’t win or get second, I, I think there are a lot more questions about whether he can win for a third time.

Sevan Matossian (03:43):

And then if we go over to Australia and look at the female leader board, uh, Mr. Pedro, have you had a chance to, are, are you on their time? Are you able to watch the, um, Australian events at a decent time?

@coffeepodsnwods (03:54):

I can cast the tail end when I get up and then, you know, I can rewind a bit.

Sevan Matossian (04:00):

When you see Ellie Turner at the top yesterday, uh, she wasn’t at the top. And then today she’s up there strong, right? With a 12 point lead. It, it it, did you ever doubt yesterday, uh, uh, Pedro, that she wasn’t going to, um, to, to win this event? To win this competition?

@coffeepodsnwods (04:17):

Yeah, I did. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (04:18):

You did have a doubt.

@coffeepodsnwods (04:19):

Well, maybe stupidly, but I was just looking at how well Wellers were doing. Like, I was looking at Kate Vane and I was like, gee, she looks strong and she’s got good endurance. She’s got the, the run is coming up. You know, I was like, she’s, she’s gonna do all right. But then, you know, I think Linda, and, you know, it was just Ellie’s day. It was just moving day was Ellie’s day, I think.

Sevan Matossian (04:39):

And, and, and do you think she holds it? Do you think that’s it for her, Ellie, now? Uh, it’s a, it’s a lock.

@coffeepodsnwods (04:45):

Yeah. I mean, I can’t see, I can’t see her struggling with the sandbag. I can see Theodor struggling with the sandbag. I, you know, like there’s things that she won’t struggle with that other people will, I think,

Sevan Matossian (04:56):

Um, uh, j Jr. Do you know who, who, who her coach is on the ground there. Do you know who went with her to Australia?

JR Howell (05:02):

No, I’m not sure. But I’m really looking at number five and looking at Jamie and thinking about the first workout for Sunday being the one with all the gymnastics. And she’s still very much within striking distance. And I wonder how, how Grace and how, um, cat are gonna do on that one.

John Young (05:18):

It’s top three, right? Top three go, correct?

JR Howell (05:20):

Correct. Yep.

Sevan Matossian (05:22):

Uh, so she, I think, um, she’s 12, she’s 28 points out of third place.

John Young (05:26):

Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yep. And I, she will most likely win event six.

JR Howell (05:33):

I think so

John Young (05:33):

Too. So, so it’s gonna be a very, very tight race on the last workout for top three,

Sevan Matossian (05:41):

Uh, between Grace, uh, Caitlin and, uh, Emily Devoy

John Young (05:45):

And Jamie.

Sevan Matossian (05:47):

And, and Jamie, sorry. Yeah. And Jamie. Yeah. Um, okay, let’s just check at the boys really quick, uh, and see, uh, how Mr. Uh, crouch, J Crouch, uh, did

John Young (05:58):

I could also see event six being Ellie’s worst finish. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, Ellie Turner.

Sevan Matossian (06:05):

And do you think it’ll be so bad that it gets scrambled up to where it’s like,

John Young (06:09):

No, I like, I think she’ll be fine making it, but cuz I think she’ll blow early event seven out of the, out of the water. But, uh, I don’t think she’ll have a, a comfortable lead. I think every, all top three people will be there within 20 points of each other.

Sevan Matossian (06:26):

Did, did we see this last night? We saw these results last night, right?

Brian Spin (06:30):

Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, uh, we saw Workout three Populated. That’s right.

Sevan Matossian (06:34):

That’s right. Okay. And, and, uh, so Jay Crouch got a, finally got a, a 14th something out of the, uh, top five that was the, uh, is that the Max snatch? Mm-hmm.

Brian Spin (06:43):

<affirmative>. Yep. Jake won that

Sevan Matossian (06:46):

2 65. Is that a problem going to the games to only have a 265 pound snatch only

John Young (06:52):

At the games? It is, but for the semifinal, that’s

Brian Spin (06:55):

Not, that’s what prevents him from being a top 10 athlete like we talked about last night.

JR Howell (07:02):

And for everybody that’s like listening, right. And they’re trying to, you know, they, they’re trying to understand why Australia only gets three spots to the games and why the North American semi-finals get 12 or 10 or 9, 2 65 snatch last weekend and the east would’ve been a 24th.

Sevan Matossian (07:20):

JR Howell (07:21):

Wow. Here, here it’s the 14th. So it’s just, I mean, in the West it’s probably gonna be 30th <laugh> this weekend. Yeah. There’s just so, there’s so many heavy hitters. So when you’re comparing across regions, especially on something like a lift, it, it really, like, it really is tough to even compare sometimes.

Sevan Matossian (07:39):

And, and while we’re here, uh, you can see Jake Douglas, I think there’s a video, Caleb I sent you. Um,

@coffeepodsnwods (07:44):

It’s ridiculous.

Sevan Matossian (07:45):

Uh, yeah. Three 10, you know, of him. Pedro, you know of that guy.

@coffeepodsnwods (07:50):

I just know like he’s, he’s on the Haiti with PO Pro and I know Steve Sek coaches him and you know, does his program and stuff and he’s just, he is an an, he looks like, you know, that movie poster for Warrior with, um, you know, the kickboxing movie from like 10 years ago. Maybe. He looks like he showed me in that he’s an absolute unit.

Sevan Matossian (08:06):

Oh, this is the guy with the massive traps, right?

@coffeepodsnwods (08:10):

Massive everything. I assume

Brian Spin (08:12):

John Young (08:14):

Sevan Matossian (08:15):

Massive everything. Uh, our correspondent from, uh, Ireland lets us know, uh, 310 pounds. So this is the current record for the snatch for the men. Yeah. Helping Frozen. Did we freeze? Hello?

John Young (08:29):

It is, yeah, three tens, three tenths the most as anybody’s done so far. Yeah,

@coffeepodsnwods (08:33):

The commentator said at the time that it’s the, it’s the tie for the fourth heaviest at a, at an event.

Sevan Matossian (08:38):

Oh. Ever In the history of CrossFit in

@coffeepodsnwods (08:40):

A, in a like licensed, you know, like part of the season. Wow.

Sevan Matossian (08:44):

Okay. Uh, let’s see. Action.

John Young (08:50):

That’s sweet, man. That looks solid.

@coffeepodsnwods (08:54):

He definitely it on like three 15.

Sevan Matossian (08:56):

You do you think he has more on the tank pager? Oh yeah. Young. More in the tank

John Young (09:01):

By what that looks like. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (09:03):

Can we see that one more time? Uh, how’s this technique, uh, Mr. Crash?

JR Howell (09:09):

It’s pretty solid to me. Like, it, it looks eerily similar to how easy Jason made. 3 0 5 looked last week. What I’m thinking is what everyone here who, who’s gonna snatch more today? Anthony Davis or Gee,

John Young (09:22):

Um, between those two? Or is there is more people gonna snatch more than three 10?

JR Howell (09:28):

I just think between those two, between Gee and Anthony Davis. Who?

John Young (09:30):

Anthony Davis. You

Mike Halpin (09:32):

Think so?

John Young (09:32):

Yeah. Anthony Davis snatched three 40 and missed his first lift. Um, he is not in the ballpark of Anthony Davis now. He did just lose 10 pounds, uh, of weight. So that could make him, he’s Trudy

Sevan Matossian (09:46):

Davis did.

John Young (09:46):

Davis did Anthony Davis. Yeah. He’s almost trying to get weaker to get better at his weaknesses. Um, which I mean, that’s what he needs to be doing. But if he snatched three 40, gee has never snatched that. Never gotten close to that. Um, I’m pretty sure Tudor has snatched more than gee. Um, I don’t think, I don’t think, I think Anthony Davis will snatch 3 25 and I don’t see gee doing that.

Mike Halpin (10:12):

I don’t think Gee will need to. Right,

John Young (10:14):

Right. He won’t. He won’t. But I mean he’s

Mike Halpin (10:16):

Smart, smart. He doesn’t go all out.

Sevan Matossian (10:20):

Um, uh, uh, no, sorry.

Mike Halpin (10:23):

Anthony Davis has had some <affirmative>.

Sevan Matossian (10:29):

Go ahead. Go ahead Pedro.

@coffeepodsnwods (10:31):

That wasn’t me. That

Mike Halpin (10:32):

Was my fault. I was gonna say an Anthony Davis has, it’s okay. Anthony Davis has, has some health issue. There’s his shoulders and things like that. So I, I know from what he told, he hasn’t hang on Max lifts for quite a while.

Sevan Matossian (10:48):

I’m glad you said, um, health issues. And then you alluded to shoulder cuz I went straight to gonorrhea and I’m glad you cleared that up. So I I wouldn’t state get, start perseverating on that. Um, uh, as Cornholio, uh, as three 10 can look easy, Savon and a three 15, uh, uh, can look, um, impossible. I agree. And what’s interesting is Jake Chapman says, nice shrug, shrug shoulders under the bar. I’d love to see it. I was thinking the opposite. Like he was pulling too much.

@coffeepodsnwods (11:16):

Maybe he just, cause he’s so massive, he just looks like he’s shrugging all the time. Even he’s just sounding normal. That’s good. That’s a good point. His shoulders touche his ears.

Sevan Matossian (11:23):

Uh, but you liked it, you liked his movement. Uh, JR

JR Howell (11:26):

Yeah, it looked good. I mean, his bottom position for being that big looked really, he looks really mobile at the bottom too. He really didn’t have to stay down there with it at all. I mean, it came up super fluid.

Sevan Matossian (11:36):

Scott Perkins, John is all knowing and lifting heavy. Just ask him.

JR Howell (11:41):

Sevan Matossian (11:42):

True. Sounds fired at John A. Little early for that, but, okay, we’ll take it. Uh, okay, let’s cruise over. Uh, we are just minutes away from the northwest semi-final starting 19 minutes. Uh, I believe it will be Adrian Conway doing it, uh, with the, uh, podcast equipment. Chase Ingram from home and a couple guys roaming the floor. Uh, can we take a peek at the leaderboard? The workout’s gonna be Linda and I just want to dig in right to, uh, GZA. Um, I would’ve powered it. James, did you get a link? I sent you a link. What the hell is James Townson <laugh> James, you get a link? Yes. James? Yes. James. I sent it at, uh, oh look, there he is. I’ll he’s like a genie. You just rubbed the lamp and there he is. Mr. Townsend. Where is he? Did he pop up? Bam. There he is. Hey, <laugh>. Just in time. What’s up dude? Uh, welcome to the show. James Townsend, owner of the Brave Gym Line. Brave CrossFit and T b o training.

James Townsend (12:47):

How you doing?

Sevan Matossian (12:49):

Awesome. I’m excited for this. Uh, easy. Uh, are you familiar with, uh, Linda James? You done that one a few times?

James Townsend (12:57):

No, but I had, uh, mal back in the day do it maybe three times.

Sevan Matossian (13:03):

I thought you were gonna say, yeah, you know, you’ve done that workout a hundred times, it seems like it would be something you would be No, you, you’re not a big Linda fan. Why is that? Why, why is that?

James Townsend (13:17):

Sevan Matossian (13:19):

I thought that’s a big strong guy’s workout. I thought it’s a big strong guy’s workout.

James Townsend (13:22):

Nah, nah, it’s a cardio work. Not for a guy. Yeah. Yeah. Not, not for a guy like me. I’m fast twist, dominant, so I’m blowing up in maybe six, six to five.

Sevan Matossian (13:33):

Okay, so you want to, you want to add 10% and start at five and work your way down <laugh>.

James Townsend (13:38):

There we go. There

Sevan Matossian (13:39):

We go. Alright.

John Young (13:40):

The 1 45 squat cleans are the reason he doesn’t like this work. <laugh>. It’s

James Townsend (13:43):

Not exactly <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (13:47):

Um, is this just a, is this, is this just a runaway, uh, for Gza? And how, how impressed are you with Alex Gza James?

James Townsend (13:55):

Um, man, she’s, she’s a, she’s a powerhouse. I like, uh, I like her, her mindset. I like where she’s, uh, how she attack it. Right? Um, I think she missed it like two years ago, right? She was just on the cups two

Sevan Matossian (14:09):

Years ago. I think you’re right. Yes, yes, yes.

James Townsend (14:12):

And then last year, you know, she, she came full headed of Siemens, so now she’s a veteran. So now she has the experience and, and she has the will to push and I think, I think she’s gonna be one of the top five in this workout.

Sevan Matossian (14:25):

Uh, uh, JR when you see someone with a 270 pound, uh, bench press, we’re, we’re, that’s like world class level, right? This is, this is like, even, this is bizarre even for a CrossFitter, right? This is a, I mean, do we have anyone, is there, is there anyone else doing anything world class at that level in the men and women and anything meaning, like, do we have anyone who can run at the level that’s, that’s equivalent to where she’s bench pressing for women? Or do we have anyone who can snatch in the men’s division that’s equivalent to what she’s bench pressing? I mean, I looked at the world record for bench press for women, natural women and it, and it was like 308 pounds for a, for 140 pound woman or something like that.

JR Howell (15:06):

Yeah. I mean, I definitely think she’s a outlier, um, on this movement, you know, movement even with the other world class women in the sport. But like, something I look at on a two 70 bench press is it doesn’t always translate to 55 reps with sixties. Not always. For me, the thing that translates maybe even more so to how clean she made the ring dips look last night weighted with all the weighted burpees. And that along with the bench press, leads me to believe she’s got really good muscle stamina. So I think that she is gonna perform and kind of back up that two 70 bench maybe winning this workout. I think it’s between her and Danny,

Sevan Matossian (15:45):

Uh, young. Is she sore from yesterday? Is is it gonna, is that, uh, are all those meth mus and uh, ring dips gonna bug, uh, gza Mr. Young?

John Young (15:53):

No, she’s used to this type of volume. It’s only been two events. I mean, she might be sore by the end of the weekend, but not now.

Sevan Matossian (16:03):

How in world, world record for Gza.

Mike Halpin (16:08):

Maybe it’s gonna come down to her pacing. Like you asked James and you’ve, you and Jr brought up as well. It’s like, yeah, she can do a two 70 bench, but we should do this many reps. And also you saw it a few times over the years, her pacing of workouts, she can get burnout quick. So I, I would hope it’s not a brook. I would hope it’s not something like that where all of a sudden somebody that should be committed a workout and blow up a bit, but talking to a few people close to her, that’s the focus for this workout. Not how great she is on a bench, but actually making sure she stays at a, at a pace she can control from 10 to one.

Sevan Matossian (16:47):

You, I, I’m having trouble believing that. James, what do you think? She has a two 70 max, but she’s gonna be doing 60 pounds dumbbells. That’s half, that’s less than half her max.

James Townsend (16:57):

That’s what I’m saying.

Sevan Matossian (16:57):

I think she can it, she’s gonna, I don’t think she has to

James Townsend (17:00):

Paste. Yeah, right, right. With, with a two 70 bench like that for a female that’s, that 60 pound dumbbells is gonna be pretty much lightweight for her.

Sevan Matossian (17:12):

Lightweight, literally,

John Young (17:14):

Literally probably 30 pounds between her and the second best on bench press. That’s so much

Sevan Matossian (17:20):

At that event, or you mean just pretty much out of female CrossFitters worldwide.

John Young (17:24):

Just at, at a fe like the second best bench presser that’s in that elite category in the CrossFit games. Like you’re going to the games, right? I I’m willing to beg Gza has 30 pounds in second. Best,

Sevan Matossian (17:36):

I I want to say that she benched two 30 in high school, like as a freshman or something. There’s a story going around, something like that, which is

Mike Halpin (17:43):

Absolutely, I’m saying all that is true. I’m, I’m saying the entirety of the workout, all the pieces that she has to do, going from 10 to one is that was the focus that I, that I talked about with some people around her is pacing that entire workout and not just being able to do really well on a piece of the workout. Like Brooke Brooke’s amazing at deadlifts. She died on the mm-hmm. <affirmative> on the bench press because of the pacing of that workout for her. Same thing here. You can say that somebody’s the best bencher in the world at the, in this competition that does not always equate itself to doing a world record on this.

Sevan Matossian (18:22):

I guess what, I guess what we’re just saying is, um, if you could tell whoever told you that, uh, to just tell Gza to go full speed ahead, don’t worry about pacing. We, we, the experts have weighed in and she should, uh, I I

Mike Halpin (18:33):

They’re probably saying that now, especially cuz of her overall. Yeah, she can do the right thing. She’ll do Really?

Sevan Matossian (18:41):

Uh, uh, Bethany Chadburn, uh, what, what, look at this comeback she’s making, uh, James, any, any surprise? Uh, she, uh, lots of injury talk, uh, got caught in a, in a testing pool that tested her as positive so she couldn’t compete at the games that year with Carrie Pierce. You know, that’s gotta be a lot of emotional ups and downs. Are you surprised to see her at the top?

James Townsend (19:04):

No, I’m not. Um, when I was at the games, uh, coach Mile, she was one of the athletes, I was like, you know, worried about that that could podium and place in the top 10. So for her to be at the top now, um, almost two years later, it’s, it’s no surprising.

Sevan Matossian (19:23):

Um, um, and uh, w w what were it, it’s not just that she’s a great CrossFitter, it’s that she’s a great athlete, right? Like when you look at her right, you’re like, holy shit, this is like a well-rounded person. She’s gonna be good and the unknown and unknowable and, and all the stuff that’s like, just the regular stuff,

James Townsend (19:37):

Right? Right. Overall, so for today, I mean, I don’t think she really needs to, you know, go balls to wall on a snatch or, you know, um, try to win the Linda workout because of her back, you know, if she just stays in the middle of the pack and you know, maybe hit a 180 5, 1 90 snatch. She’s good.

John Young (19:57):

You think she’s got that?

James Townsend (19:58):

Uh, I think, I don’t,

John Young (20:00):

I don’t think that’s taking it easy for her on snatch.

James Townsend (20:04):

So, so, so I think if she just see what the field is is looking like maybe 180 that would keep her

John Young (20:12):

Top. She needs to know what numbers to hit to be top, to be around 20th place in that I, yeah. Right. Her coach needs to be on play smart as far as like, cause she’ll be in the last heat, she’ll know what numbers people are hitting. Exactly. And not worry about the 200 pound snatchers and just beat whatever the uh, uh, bottleneck is cuz there will be a bottleneck number.

James Townsend (20:33):

Right, right.

Sevan Matossian (20:35):

Uh, you mean with all the snatches?

John Young (20:37):

Sevan Matossian (20:38):

Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, um, that final, that final uh, workout today, uh, what is it? Um, five fi the final workout, five is there, is there a, uh, runaway here? Pedro? Is there someone you think in the West? Okay, this is the runner and the bunch of the ladies, she’s just gonna run away with it.

@coffeepodsnwods (20:54):

Uh, like not to, I’m sure the other guys know more. Not to my knowledge. No one, like, there’s no one like, uh, Sydney and East or, you know what I mean? Or like, like, I dunno, I think you guys are talking about Bethany and like sh it’s not that long ago that she was like, oh, I can’t do these movements, I can’t do all this kind of stuff. That’s my main concern with her is that like she’ll, you know, she has to carry a sandbag that’s gonna put pressure on her back. She has to do, like, I, to be honest, I was very impressed with where she’s sitting now considering she had the sled pole and all that stuff. Um, but it isn’t a huge amount of time ago that she was like just gingerly moving back into doing movements for the first time and squatting into a ball and this kind of stuff. Um, but yeah, no, I dunno. The other guys that know more than me on on who are good runners and say how spanner young and no more than me in there,

Sevan Matossian (21:46):

Jr I think Rolf’s supposed to win this. I think she knows she’s supposed to win this. And I think that the problem with that is if she takes a third or a fourth or something like that happens, instead of it being a success, it’s a disappointment. Thoughts.

JR Howell (22:00):

I think she knows she needs to balance out test four. So, I mean, I think that in her head she expects herself to win too, and I think putting the pressure on her will probably help.

Sevan Matossian (22:11):

Uh, do you like that put, what what do you think about pressure, James? If you, if you know, if you like, like Colton, you know, Colton puts that pressure on himself like, Hey, I really need to go in and win this workout, and then he ends up taking second in the tie break. Does does that make it a letdown because you put pressure on yourself to win it?

James Townsend (22:28):

No, not at all. Not at all. And every athlete is different, right? So I would just say, you know, if any athletes that put on, you know, that put on pressure on themselves like that, they just gotta ride the wave, you know, find, find that energy that’s gonna get you going to even push to the number one spot. Or if you take second, hey, that’s 95 points. So, you know, either way just be grateful either way.

Sevan Matossian (22:54):

If you, if you ha do you prep your athletes James, ahead of time if they, um, like, hey, if you have a disappointing performance, these are the three steps we go through, uh, quickly, uh, five minutes of grieve a grievance, you know, uh, five minutes of forgiveness and then five minutes of quit being a bitch. Like, do you have, is there a plan for fa for failure

James Townsend (23:11):

Years? Yeah. Yeah. A absolutely like, um, I give my athletes at least five time to five minutes to, um, express their emotions, right? So I leave them alone <laugh>, I let them curse, I let them do whatever they want and then I’ll come back and, and talk to ’em and say, all right, where can we learn at? Where can we get better? How can you understand how to improve on the next workout? Then third step is short-term memory. God let it go. Because if you’re, if you’re worried about test one and two and how you didn’t do good, then it’s gonna worry going forward. So you gotta have that short-term memory. Same thing of, of being a football player. Short-term memory, you miss a pass, let it go. You still got more to do going forward.

Sevan Matossian (23:55):

This cannot be real. This cannot really be my mom. Rosemary McIn. Halpin needs wifi, <laugh> helping wifi needs a booster. There’s no way. There’s no way. That’s my mom making 49ers jokes.

John Young (24:07):

Mike Halpin (24:08):

Sevan Matossian (24:08):

Wifi isn’t, there is no way helping by the ex Alex, uh, have I told you a story about the time se took a number two? That is definitely not my mom.

James Townsend (24:16):

Sevan Matossian (24:18):

Assholes don’t think is you asshole

Brian Spin (24:21):

A guarantee, uh, uh, to win number five

Sevan Matossian (24:24):

Though. Wait, say that again. Say that again. Spin. I don’t, I don’t think

Brian Spin (24:26):

Emily is guaranteed to win number five.

John Young (24:29):

If she can touch and go all eight of those snatches, I think, I think she’ll win it. Uh, just if she can, I don’t know if she can do that. I don’t know. But if she does touch and go all eight snatches, I bet she wins that workout.

James Townsend (24:41):

Even if, even if she’s like third off the barbell four foot, the barbell, I, I’m a big believer in her own run.

John Young (24:48):

Yeah. Even if it’s lower eight snatches, just I would, as long as she doesn’t put it down,

Brian Spin (24:53):

I went back to 21 and

Sevan Matossian (24:55):

Get, get meters. Get us, get us with the facts.

Brian Spin (24:58):

So yeah, you’ll look at the 550 meter Sprint Catchin was the fastest of this field followed by Bailey, Emily, and then Danny.

Sevan Matossian (25:08):

Mm. Danny’s Egel. Danny Spiegel beat Emily Rolf.

Mike Halpin (25:12):

It’s two or three seconds.

Brian Spin (25:14):

Yeah, it, yeah, its Emily then Danny. Danny was fourth out

John Young (25:17):

Of 500 meters is so much different than 800 meters, 300 hole meters.

Mike Halpin (25:22):

They were actually, and they were actually racing against

John Young (25:24):

Each other.

Mike Halpin (25:25):

A big piece of this is that they’re on runners. They have no idea what they’re doing against each other. I think Dan, uh, I think Danielle or somebody said it on your show, right, Savan, is that if they were actually on a foot race, it’d be a much different race and that, and that’s where I think Emily, Ralph will be a little bit different here and is that she’s won a lot of running events, but they’ve all been on foot and they’ve all been long endurance events on a sprint. I think it’s closer to Karin or some of these others and those numbers, I mean it’s like sixth, 10th, ninth, 11th, uh, in that five 50 event, those are all within two seconds of each other. So add another what, 250 meters onto that. Plus they just did a barbell.

John Young (26:09):

It’s literally twice as much though. Li like the times is what, one 20 on that workout on the 550 meter sprint? Was it 1 21, 1 25, 1 17? Yeah. Like the winners of this event on the guy’s side is 3 0 6, 3 10. It’s twice as long. Yeah, that’s anaerobic. That workout. This workout is not completely anaerobic. Okay.

Sevan Matossian (26:32):

It’s Rolf system

John Young (26:33):

Up real fast and then a three minute run.

Sevan Matossian (26:36):

Emily Rolf is faster than Halen’s wifi. Um, that’s for sure. Still, still great data points that halpin up great, great, uh, great data points that he brings up. Here’s the thing. I think that she’s putting pressure on herself to win it. I think when she sees that workout, she thinks she can win it. And I think not, not only thinks, I think she thinks she has to win it. She should win it. Not just for this event, but for her headspace for even going to the games. But I agree, 800 is is is a little different than a 500.

John Young (27:03):

I do see what you’re saying though. I I almost think it’ll be like a meat of the two worlds. Like I could see them all being within, you know, very close to each other, uh, like the, the Catherines. Um, but again, if it’s, if they do those eight snatches unbroken, I think Catherine for sure will. I don’t know if Emily will. Um, they, they, I I get what you’re saying though. I don’t think, I don’t think it’s a definite either way.

Sevan Matossian (27:29):

Uh, so we have sees closer. So we have g what we’re talking about. We agree Gza for, uh, workout, everyone’s pretty, like we gaza’s, uh, the front runner for workout number. Uh, three. Everyone pretty much agree for the women.

John Young (27:42):

Uh, Siegel should be good on it. Uh, Christine Callander should be good on it. There’s a lot of really strong women. I think Kaza is just the fittest of those women. Yeah, she is. She’s not gonna be the only one unbroken on the bench press, but like we’ve alluded to, it’s, it’s an aerobic workout for the people that aren’t worried about the bench press

Sevan Matossian (28:01):

And, and, uh, and who will have the, the heaviest, uh, snatch in outta the women.

John Young (28:06):

This is actually a really good, uh, competition. On the snatch. There’s three women who have snatched 2 25. Um,

James Townsend (28:15):

I say Colin Brander.

John Young (28:17):

Colin Brander Spiegel. And there’s another girl. Can you bring up the leaderboard if I see her name?

James Townsend (28:21):

Hannah Black.

John Young (28:22):

Hannah Black. She’s also snatched two 20

Sevan Matossian (28:25):

Five’s all in all in comps. They’ve done that.

John Young (28:28):

Uh, I don’t think Hannah Black has Christine Colin Brander and Danny Spiegel both have around 2 25. Might have been two 20.

Brian Spin (28:36):

And Madison McElhanney is gonna be up there too. She’ll be,

James Townsend (28:42):

Um, uh, curse at her.

Sevan Matossian (28:44):

John Young (28:44):

She, she was 2 0 2 though. That’s 20 pounds. I like she’ll be up top five. But as far as winning the event, 2 0 2 is the most she’s done,

Sevan Matossian (28:55):

Uh, a year ago though. Yeah. Yeah. Olivia, two years

John Young (28:57):

Ago. I get that.

James Townsend (29:00):

Did that. But, uh, right now, the other day she posted a 2, 2 25, 2 30 snatch.

Sevan Matossian (29:07):

John Young (29:07):

Did, can we pull this up?

James Townsend (29:08):

Yeah. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (29:11):

Uh, Damien Castro. Thank you. Sev equals life giving sweet water. Well, thank you. It’s nicest thing anyone said to me this year, uh, while we pull up Olivia. Okay, let’s do it. Two 10.

John Young (29:24):

2 10 0, 2 10.

James Townsend (29:26):

Okay. Okay.

Sevan Matossian (29:28):

That’s how my, my goodness. Easier than Jake Douglas. Easier than Jake Douglas is three

John Young (29:33):

10 <laugh>. That’s very true.

Sevan Matossian (29:35):

Wow. See, she, and she’s just, that’s silky smooth.

John Young (29:39):

I would love nothing more for her to hit like two early arm. And then, uh, you’re a big fan of that James <laugh> early arm, Ben. Uh, and then Spiegel and Col brander both get like two 15 and underperform and then col, uh, carte ties them. I would love that. We’re spending early.
