CrossFit Games Semifinals WEST | Event 1 Recap

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

Kayla, did you send the link over to the main superstar thread? Yeah. Everybody’s got it if they want it. Okay, awesome. You demand, uh, welcome everyone to the Sev podcast where people who are interested in CrossFit games broadcast either get their start or come to die.

Bill Grundler (00:16):

<laugh>, I’m not here to die about you guys.

Sevan Matossian (00:24):

I’m dead. I’m already dead. I’m, I’m trying to drag you down into the grave with me, Mr. Greenler. I

Bill Grundler (00:29):

Mean, I’ll watch, I’ll watch,

Sevan Matossian (00:31):

Um, Grundler. Yeah. Some people pull a sled. I’m trying to pull grundler to the grave. Hey, uh, before we start, uh, with, uh, the magnificent, um, event that is the, um, uh, Northwest semi-final, let’s go over and look at the Australian leaderboard. But we forgot to do that this morning. I was like, man, why didn’t we do that? Uh, we got some favorites over there. I have some personal favorites over there. Uh, before we get started, I’d like to reiterate, um, that the scores may not be exactly comparable because there are some thoughts that the floor in Australia was much, much, much, much, much easier to pull the sled. But, uh, we have a tremendous performance, uh, regardless by, uh, Caitlin Van Zal, uh, Jamie Simmons, Madeline Stewart, and in fifth place. Um, are we surprised and should we be concerned? Uh, the great LA Turner? Anyone

Bill Grundler (01:16):

That she’s in fifth or she’s in that top five or what?

Sevan Matossian (01:18):

Oh, that she’s in fifth? Yeah. That she’s not that sort of every, everyone has sort of picked her to be, uh, the first place finisher to, to win this thing. I

Bill Grundler (01:27):

Think it’s a little early yet. I mean, yeah. I mean, uh, a third and 11th. Okay. The 11th. Not that spectacular, but she’s got a lot of other events. And Ellie’s a badass. I mean, I, I don’t, I, she, I don’t think she’s, I don’t think we haven’t, I don’t think we’re done watching her anymore. I don’t think she’s gonna drop out of there. She’s in there.

Sevan Matossian (01:45):

But if, if it were over now, just to say I agree to everything you’re saying only three go from Australia, right?

Bill Grundler (01:51):

Yeah. Yeah,

JR Howell (01:53):

Yeah. Correct.

Sevan Matossian (01:53):

Yep. And, and, and, and those are some powerhouses up there, right? You got, you could, I mean, Madeline Stewart is just a straight up veteran, right? Four games appearances. Mm-hmm.

Bill Grundler (02:01):

Sevan Matossian (02:02):

And, uh, yet

Bill Grundler (02:03):

I think what’s crazy with the, uh, with the Australian women, like they, these guys all know each other so well, <laugh>, you know, so like, you kind of know where everybody is when you’re, when you’re shoulder to shoulder with these other athletes. I think they do.

Sevan Matossian (02:17):

So, uh, Anthony tpa Bill could pass his sev on son. Uh, hey, dickhead, you know, he’s a year older than me.

Bill Grundler (02:23):

<laugh>. I’m only 38. I don’t know what you’re talking about. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (02:28):

Son of a bitch, uh, jr um, any, any concerns, uh, for Ellie is, is there, should we be like, is she injured? Is it like that, uh, when you see an 11th like that, when the girl is supposed to win it? No. Okay.

JR Howell (02:39):

No, not at all. I actually thought she might be a little bit lower after two workouts with the Max Snatch and Linda looming. Like, I think she’s only gonna climb from here.

Bill Grundler (02:48):

Sevan Matossian (02:48):

Agree. Okay. Uh, Mr. Spin are, are, are you in agreement? Do you see anything here that concerns you or do you just see a, a good event with a bunch of, uh, hardcore athletes getting after it? Yeah,

Brian Spin (02:59):

These are just probably two of her n not best at, uh, workouts here. Um, did well on the, on the first one, but I don’t think anybody expected her to be at the very top on, on the ring complex.

Sevan Matossian (03:12):

Okay. That was the second event. The ring complex. Yeah. And, um, uh, the good news is, is right, they all finished. Right? So that’s a, that’s a good sign.

Brian Spin (03:22):

You mean got got reps on there?

Sevan Matossian (03:24):

Oh, uh, oh. Right, right, right. It’s your total, uh, number of burpees. Is that what we’re looking at for this one? Yeah, the bur the

Brian Spin (03:30):

Sevan Matossian (03:31):

Box jump okay. With, okay. Okay. Yeah. Right. Is there anyone who got zero reps here in Australia? All right. Quite a few. Yep.

Bill Grundler (03:45):

Sevan Matossian (03:46):

So half, half, half the pack.

Bill Grundler (03:48):

Well, that’s, that’s, I think that’s one of the problems with the scoring of it.

Sevan Matossian (03:52):

Uh, explain, uh, Mr. Bill, because

Bill Grundler (03:54):

They’re only counting the burpee box jump overs. Like you did all that other work and none of that even counted. So now you have all these ties and that’s, that’s a big problem because now that’s going to, that disrupts the, you, you want, you want the, you want your scoring to be appropriate to whatever that, that position is. And now we have how many, how many zeros were there? 10.

John Young (04:15):

It is, it is scored differently though. You notice how 25th 7, 2 20, there’s three 20 fifths and then there’s a 28th. So they get rep

Bill Grundler (04:22):

There a tiebreak on there.

John Young (04:23):

Yeah. How many ring muscle up complexes you got?

Bill Grundler (04:26):

Oh, okay. But even, but even that, like, it’s just

John Young (04:28):

Loaded as zero reps.

Bill Grundler (04:29):

Yeah. Okay.

JR Howell (04:30):

Yeah. And John, so like, as far as someone being in the same position as Sydney last weekend, would you say it would have to be like Laura Clifton? Is she the highest ranked athlete coming in that was supposed to do pretty well that could possibly move up with a zero? Similarly to how Sydnee

John Young (04:45):

Did? Yes. Yeah, because there’s, she’s gonna have home run events just like Sydney. Like event five is almost the only reason Sydnee made it <laugh>. It’s not the only reason, but if event five single-handedly made that 58th possible, and I think she’s the only one who has the ability to do that as well. That’s what Sydnee did.

Brian Spin (05:07):

Yeah. I But with a field of 30, and I think, you know, if you look at the South America year board too, it, it’s, you don’t have as deep of a field and they’re, it’s tough to make up some ground if everybody in the top is, you know, if the top five are, uh, uh, better than the rest, they’re just gonna be trading spots the whole time. And it’s gonna be tough to make up that many points with only, uh, five squared vents left.

Sevan Matossian (05:31):

Uh, Magnus, hol Grim, uh, JR is back in the toilet room. He is, I noticed that, uh, myself, uh, Bain, uh, Seban looks like someone’s first attempt at drawing Bill, like before they put the muscles on it, <laugh>, they threw in the shoulders and shit. <laugh>, uh, and Guy Jr. There’s one more good comment for Jr. Uh, Jr. Uh, stop crying. It’s okay. And finally, Richie Rich. Uh, John is so G Team. My goodness.

John Young (05:58):

You’re back on the, there. It’s

Brian Spin (05:59):

There. It’s

Sevan Matossian (06:00):

John Young (06:01):

I was feeling good this morning there. It’s too much

Sevan Matossian (06:03):

Love. Too much

John Young (06:04):

Love, actually, the normal.

Sevan Matossian (06:05):

Oh, okay. And let’s cruise over to the, when do these guys go next? How many hours are we away from? Um, these, these Australians going, uh, workout three? Are we close or is it, is that, that’s tonight. Okay. So five or six hours, seven, eight hours from now. Yeah. Uh, and let’s go over and look at the boys who, wait, wait, wait, sorry, one more second. Let’s get, let’s, uh, do the girls one more time. Who’s Emily? Uh, d Droy. Does she belong in there? Who is she? Have we talk?

Brian Spin (06:31):

She was on a team last year, I believe. Um, no, she finished Zeroth in the ocean, or seventh in the, uh,

Sevan Matossian (06:40):

Zeroth. Zero of Brian been dropping some big bombs on us with zero. They have

Brian Spin (06:44):

On the

Sevan Matossian (06:44):

Site. They zero. Look at it. Zeroth. Yeah, it’s good.

Brian Spin (06:47):

Zeroth, uh, this year? Um, no, she was seventh at Torian last year.

Sevan Matossian (06:53):

Uh, wow. Okay. Hold I, this is gonna be a long show. I think Sev looks like if you bought your bill Grundler Off a Wish <laugh>. I’m not sure I get that, but I interpret it as not looking so good for me. <laugh>. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, I saw her. Uh, she, she actually, they, they, uh, didn’t interview with her. Yeah, she was young. Huh? Young. Promising, uh, future of Australia.

Brian Spin (07:15):

Yeah, there’s a bunch of ’em in Australia around that age.

Sevan Matossian (07:19):

All right. Uh, let’s go take a peak, Eric. Don’t get ahead of yourself buddy. Don’t get ahead of yourself. That’s exciting news though about China, Chobin. And eighth. Let’s go look at the boys in Australia real quick. Zach Thomas, j Crouch, and second Riley Smith. Bailey, Martin, uh, William Kearney in fifth. Uh, uh, first and a fifth for Zach Thomas, j Crouch, a third and a fourth. Uh, any any surprises here, <affirmative>?

Brian Spin (07:53):

John Young (07:53):

For me. Not, not really

Sevan Matossian (07:55):

<laugh>. I don’t even know who any of these guys are. Where’s, uh, where’s our buddy? Jane? Where’s Mr. Newberry?

John Young (08:00):

Oh, there you go. He might be nice. Yeah, there you go. I mean, even that not really.

Sevan Matossian (08:06):

Is is he still in it? Yeah, he is. He can still, he can still make that, uh, top three

John Young (08:12):

For sure.

Sevan Matossian (08:14):

Alrighty. Alright. Uh, that is Australia. Uh, if you’d like to see the, uh, and, and Australia is also streaming events, uh, all the events with their, uh, main broadcast team. I was able to, uh, watch some of it last night. Um, Pacific Standard Time. I think it was like 9, 10, 11. That shit starts. Okay, let’s go pop over to the, uh, leaderboards over here at the, uh, north America West Semi-final. I don’t even know who that is. Oh, so we don’t have workout two in yet? No, they just, we haven’t started even better, even more reason. Who the fuck is that? Who is that? Stacy Lara,

Brian Spin (08:53):

Uh, she finished 14th at the Atlas Games last year. Um, really don’t know too much before, before that. So

John Young (09:01):

She’s very good at slide polling.

Bill Grundler (09:03):

Brian Spin (09:04):

Good. She’s not very big if you go look, uh, at her Instagram.

Sevan Matossian (09:08):

So what’s interesting is, so she, she performed at Atlas Games, which was the worst semi-final last year, really? Right. You know, ba basically North American or any out of the competitive ones. And she took 14th and, but she was an American competing in Canada, which is kind of weird. I always feel like that’s an insult to send Americans over there to compete. And, uh, here, here she won. Does that just tell, does that tell you that she’s an endurance athlete? Like soon as you see that a no name, uh, who wins an event like that?

Bill Grundler (09:38):

I, I wouldn’t say, I wouldn’t say that because we saw how much difficulty people were having with the sled. I think that she’s a decent endurance athlete. I mean, she was in, she was in it on all of the machines, but where she made her move moves on that sled.

Sevan Matossian (09:52):

Who, who was the strong girl who trained at, uh, uc, Berkeley. She was always, she wanted to go to the game. She had a big Instagram account. Um, I think she may even been dating like the strength and conditioning coach at uc, Berkeley. Do you guys know who I’m talking about? Like three or four or five years ago, maybe? Someone else. Did she ever, she’s a Norco girl.

John Young (10:13):

Did she ever qualify?

Sevan Matossian (10:14):

No, I don’t think she ever made it to the games. You guys will know her big Instagram account.

Brian Spin (10:21):

I think I might know, but I can’t remember her name.

Sevan Matossian (10:23):

Colleen? Yes, yes, yes. Colleen Fox.

Bill Grundler (10:26):

Sevan Matossian (10:26):

I’m getting a little,

Bill Grundler (10:27):

Always just missed.

Sevan Matossian (10:28):

Yeah. Getting a little Colleen Fa from, uh, that girl that we just saw. See

John Young (10:32):

That bobsled Bob?

Sevan Matossian (10:33):

Yeah. Is that where she went? Is that what she ended up doing?

Bill Grundler (10:35):

That’s what she’s doing now. Yeah. Yeah.

John Young (10:36):

Colleen is a huge,

Bill Grundler (10:38):

She’s a beast. She’s

Sevan Matossian (10:40):

Very smart. She’s a

John Young (10:40):

Monster. <laugh>.

Bill Grundler (10:42):

Well, so her background, she’s a swimmer too, so she’s got that endurance piece. Uh, she can hang in that, in that zone where it like, just sucks just enough and kind of hang out there for a while. But she’s just so dang strong.

Brian Spin (10:54):

And, and she’s been to the games twice? Once. Oh, she has once on a team and once individual.

Sevan Matossian (10:58):

No shit. What year did she go individual?

Brian Spin (11:01):

Uh, 2019. She

Sevan Matossian (11:02):

Was cut. <laugh>. Is that the year, like 300 people went?

Brian Spin (11:08):

Sevan Matossian (11:08):

Yes. Okay. Yeah.

Bill Grundler (11:10):

Sevan Matossian (11:11):

Uh, which country did she represent?

John Young (11:13):

She’s American.

Brian Spin (11:14):

Yeah, us. And then she was on NorCal CrossFit Redwood City in 2017. Finished fourth at the games.

Sevan Matossian (11:21):

Okay. I, I, I figured, but who knows, maybe she went from Zimbabwe or something. She got like a, okay. Uh, back to the women’s leaderboard here. So we don’t know. So we, we don’t know who this, who, we don’t know who this is, who’s sitting at the top. Uh, Emily Rolf, uh, no surprise. Right? A lot of us were picking her to be in the top three.

John Young (11:43):

Yeah. Yeah. No, she, she murdered it.

Sevan Matossian (11:46):

Uh, any, any problems with the, uh, sled or does she look strong there also?

John Young (11:50):

No, she looked great the whole

Sevan Matossian (11:51):

Bill Grundler (11:51):

Great. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (11:53):

Uh, b we had questions about Bethany Chadburn, uh, taking six. Does that help us answer any questions, Mr. Young?

John Young (11:59):

I’m, I, there’s no answered questions on her till the end of the competition.

Sevan Matossian (12:03):

Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. No shit. <laugh>.

Bill Grundler (12:05):

You don’t,

Sevan Matossian (12:06):

I, I think that, I think between this one and the next one, we’re gonna know a lot.

John Young (12:09):

You, you agree? You agree with me, bill? Yeah.

Bill Grundler (12:11):

No, totally. I mean, it’s like, it’s always, it’s kind of a crapshoot every single time. So if she’s, when she’s good, she’s good,

Brian Spin (12:20):

<laugh>, but what happens? But that back walks up and

John Young (12:22):

When she’s, when she’s broke, she broke <laugh>

Bill Grundler (12:24):

And when she breaks something, she breaks something.

John Young (12:26):

Katherine and Olivia I was very impressed with on this event. I did not know how to for different reasons doing this. Yeah. For different reasons. But, uh, they both, especially if you look at the women above them, this was kind of a weird event. Ariel Lowen is like 20th. Like a lot of the top women did not finish, or that we think will be the top. Women did not finish super high. I know Emily did. But if you just, if you keep on going down, it’s not, their names are not at the top and Catch and Olivia are both ahead of those, the women they need to be ahead of to eventually qualify. Cuz this event too is not gonna be good for either of them. Um, but I thought they both did themselves a lot of favors.

Bill Grundler (13:09):

I, I think I was more impressed with Olivia on that one. And, and it was interesting listening to Chase and, and, uh, Adrian talk about it, about how she’s so known for her strength, but her training coach is Jacob Hoeppner, who’s not, I

John Young (13:24):

Think she’s been proven now, is

Bill Grundler (13:25):

She with Proven now, but like, her whole, her whole background has been all this stupid, crazy

John Young (13:31):

Bill Grundler (13:32):

Long, drawn out like type of things like that. Like this was actually a great event for her. And I’m not gonna say test, I won’t do it. <laugh>. Um, it’s a great, it was a great event for her. It was really fun to watch her work. And she really looked, I mean, and again, this is gonna be the thing we always talk about Olivia, is she performs, uh, with the poise of someone that’s been in the game for a while, even though she’s only 17. And it’s really cool to see that.

John Young (14:00):

Yeah. She very within herself, like she’s doing her workout, her pace, not, not worried about anybody else that

Bill Grundler (14:06):

Takes, that takes maturity, you know? I mean, you, you can’t just, she doesn’t lie. I don’t, I don’t think that they race hoar her and put blinders on. I mean, she, it takes ma mature maturity to kind of stay in your lane and do your thing. And I think that’s really cool to see her do that.

Sevan Matossian (14:21):

You got the old dog at eight, the medium dog at ninth, and the young dog at 10th, right?

Bill Grundler (14:26):

Brian Spin (14:27):

Mr. Spin. Yeah, Olivia finished last at, on the, uh, trail run at, uh, rogue Invitational. So, I mean, I don’t think anybody expected her to be in there in a long, long and long endurance event.

John Young (14:40):

And I also throw out like, she beat people like Danny Spiegel, who we thought would kill this and has improved her running. And if the endurance was that hard that Danny couldn’t just muscle everybody, like she beat her, which I think is a, a testament to her fitness going forward.

Sevan Matossian (14:59):

Jr do you have my back on this? I suggested that we would know everything we need to know about Bethany Chadburn after event two, the boy slapped me around and said nobody, sorry that that boat, that boat’s made out of balsa wood and could break or not break. What about Katherine? David’s doer, if we see her finish top 10 again in this next workout, do we know that she’s going to the games?

JR Howell (15:24):

I would bet a lot of money that she’s going to the games if she finishes top 10 in the next workout. Yeah. But I wanna, she

John Young (15:29):

JR Howell (15:30):

Like, I think the people coming in that we need to really keep an eye on and see how much they climb or don’t climb after day one, going into moving day where there’s 300 points is Freya, who’s in 37th Bailey, who’s in 26th, like to me coming in like Ariel and 20th. Like 20th with a field of 60, you know, juxtaposed to Oceania that only has 30, you know? Yeah. You know, spin already talked about. It’s gonna be harder to make up points. It’s not gonna be here. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So there’s gonna be, so there’s gonna be big swings, and they’re gonna be people that qualify that have maybe like a 30th to a 40th place finish. So just keep an eye on Bailey and Frea. I’m, I’m really interested to see how they bounce back and how much they climb going into day two.

Sevan Matossian (16:14):

Um, and why, uh, uh, Frea

John Young (16:17):

Kelly Baker two, I mean, Kelly Baker’s 23rd obvious just to see how she does

JR Howell (16:22):

Like going in. Most people picked both of those athletes to qualify for the games. So I’m just looking for the people who we all expect to be there in the end where they are after the first workout.

Sevan Matossian (16:33):

And, and, and Frea is a phrase games athlete, right? Correct. In front of the big crowd last year, throwing the sandbag around. She’s the real deal. Um, uh, what do you, what do you think this does to her mindset? Uh, 21 years old, 37th place? Um, I, I, I guess that’s what, where the test is gonna be for her, huh? Forget this workout move forward. Is that the game,

JR Howell (16:56):

Game plan? I think, I think her coach Michelle, probably does an amazing job with mental frame of mind, um, event to event, just focusing on the next task at hand. So I, I don’t worry about her in that aspect at all.

Sevan Matossian (17:09):

Uh, what, tell me, does anyone know anything about Olivia going to proven? Does that mean, did did she move, did, did she move to Tennessee?

Brian Spin (17:16):

No, she’s, she’s still out west or with Hoeppner, but, um, I think she’s doing all

John Young (17:21):

Of, she’s still trains with Hepner. It’s just, he kind of like handed her over to Shane, I’m sure. I’m pretty sure they’ve talked and, you know what I mean? And decided that was the right move.

Brian Spin (17:31):

Yeah. That happened right in between Waap Polos in the open,

John Young (17:34):

You know, hepners doing the tactical games now too. Like, he’s not all up in CrossFit 24 7. He’s got his own, you know, he’s doing a whole bunch of stuff. He’s not all about CrossFit 24 7, and Olivia is,

Sevan Matossian (17:48):

She’s so

Bill Grundler (17:48):

Damn strong.

Sevan Matossian (17:49):

What, um, what, how significant 17 that Olivia did? Well on this being, what we heard Danielle, Brandon say last night that, hey, you know, the machines don’t really test, uh, you, you’re running, you, you, do you think that if this was would’ve been outside, Olivia would’ve done just as well, or somehow she figured out how to take advantage of the machines? The runner in particular?

Bill Grundler (18:10):

I, I don’t think that it, I mean, as we saw from last week and then even to, into this week, I saw, I think looking from last week to this week, the athletes that came in this week all know that it, it’s not about the machines. It’s not a machine race that’s there. You have to be able to hang with the machines. You gotta be able to hang on that run since that’s the longest piece. But it really comes down to how you move the sled,

Sevan Matossian (18:32):

I think. Uh, Jr do you think, um, uh, Bailey and and Freya are gonna bounce back?

JR Howell (18:39):

Yeah, I think so. Especially Bailey on this next workout. Like, she would be one, I would expect to be, um, like in the top five on this, um, with just how much we know, the density of the pressing, especially with the ring dip, is gonna affect the females even more so than the males. Um, I think her muscle stamina there is gonna be great and she’ll bounce back. What I think is really interesting about Olivia is what she’s gonna snatch tomorrow. We assume she’s gonna do well on Linda. There’s a lot of weightlifting there. Sometimes we see younger athletes for some reason, not be so developed in that plane of press with the bench press. So maybe she doesn’t have that type of pressing strength with an external load. But two years ago at the game, she snatched more than any individual at the competition as a team. Hmm. So I think she’s gonna, I think she could really put on a show tomorrow.

John Young (19:30):

It’s kinda, it’s kinda sad that, uh, it’s, I guess it’s not sad, but if Danny and Christine Cobrand weren’t here, I think more eyes would be on, on her, because those two girls, I think will snatch more than like, they’re, like, there’s an abnormal amount of heavy snatchers in the North America, west Min on the mid side too. Like, we have two guys who are over three 15. Like, there’s an abnormal amount of insane snatchers and it, uh, Olivia’s one of them, but it kind of takes eyes off of her. And I am excited to watch her too.

Sevan Matossian (20:04):

Let me ask you some questions here, guys. I just, I, I don’t understand some of these comments. Uh, she’s with Opex. Who’s the Opex athlete? They’re referencing. Okay. I don’t know. Uh,

Bill Grundler (20:14):

Fo fo I think was

Sevan Matossian (20:16):

Oh, Savon. Get her coach on already. Sam Smith. Oh, is that all about Colleen? Okay. I don’t know what they’re talking about. Uh, Barry Macock. Ander. Why isn’t Boz at the West Semis? I believe he is. I think he commentated one of the, the heats I saw, right?

John Young (20:30):

Yeah. He was with Chase, wasn’t he?

Sevan Matossian (20:32):

Yeah. He got a haircut. Um, lemme cruise down here. There was one more, um, uh, carpet getting slower over time. Early heats, uh, placings. Oh, meaning that the early heats did better. Uh, any, any truth to that or that’s just

John Young (20:49):

No. Bikowski was the last heat of the day, and he had the fastest time.

Sevan Matossian (20:53):

Uh, Jason Miller, uh, Canada, 6 99. Who do you think is the biggest name female in the east that will not qualify? Biggest upset in the East?

Brian Spin (21:02):

Well, that was Wells, but I think she means West.

Sevan Matossian (21:05):

Brian Spin (21:06):

Yeah, she’s done.

Sevan Matossian (21:07):

Oh man. Y yay. Poor Fu. Uh,

John Young (21:12):

She just couldn’t move it. <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (21:13):

Gina Bartoli, thank you for the coverage this weekend. I saw Colton walking around and said hi for you. Savon also a big fan of John Young. Well, who isn’t. Thank you. Thank you. Listen, there’s two kinds of people in this world. People who are fans of John Young, and people who are in denial. <laugh>,

Bill Grundler (21:26):

Sevan Matossian (21:28):

That is the fucking truth. Uh, okay. Uh, oh. Look a, a little note for, uh, gr Grunder for Grunger. How about my boy Rafa Hansen? Grr, uh, grunger knows him from the Central Valley Throwdown, uh, Mexico’s national champion, a Monterey, California boy, I’ve been telling Brian friend to keep his eye on him. He,

Bill Grundler (21:45):

He’s been, uh, it was really actually cool to see him win his, his heat. So I’ve seen him kind of come through. He’s one of the Valley guys and he’s always been kind of hanging around. Really, really good local guy. Um, I saw him last year. He was at Guap Polooza on a team with a couple other local guys, and they were in the elite division. So it’s good to see him bounce up there. He’s been, he’s like a good regional athlete, and I think with some of the events, I, it would be fun to see him up in that. I think you could say in like the top 15. That would be really cool. Does he speak English? He’s good, dude. Yeah, totally. Okay.

Sevan Matossian (22:17):

He, this says Mexico’s national champion, wasn’t he the National Champion 2019? Well, I

Bill Grundler (22:21):

Think, I think when they did the, the rankings like that. Yeah. He was

Sevan Matossian (22:25):

Born south of San Diego.

Bill Grundler (22:26):

Uh, I don’t know where he was born, honestly, I’ve only known him since he’s been up here. He is been in the Valley. Um, he now coaches at, man, it’s a long name. It’s a, uh, it’s a, it’s a, a box that’s on a winery. Richard, something. Oh, I’ll remember. Sorry. You guys let go to that box. My bad.

Sevan Matossian (22:45):

Alexandra, uh, Barry. Uh, 79. 99 Australian Money. Thanks, Sevana on Real Media. Great coverage as always. That’s fantastic. Uh, Alexandra, thank you for the money. That’s a lot of money. I, uh, will now not be sharing my grave site with Bill, and I will buy him his own site, <laugh>

Bill Grundler (23:02):

With that

Sevan Matossian (23:03):

Money. Uh, can

Bill Grundler (23:04):

We, yeah. Richard Russell, that’s what it was. Sorry about that.

Sevan Matossian (23:06):

Can we cruise back over to the ladies? A lot of un unfamiliar names in the top 10, or people maybe we didn’t expect. Uh, China Cho, uh, in eighth Karin’s daughter in ninth, uh, 10th. Olivia Kerstetter, uh, as we head further down 14th, Danny Spiegel, that’s that. I mean, we expect her to be higher than a lot of girls, but still we expected her to be higher. Probably. Alex Gaza. 15th. 16th, Colleen, uh, Christine Coen, brander 18th. Cindy Michelen. I thought she looked great on the runner, man. For all the shit I talk about her running. I thought she looked good. And from the footage I saw, I thought Christine Cobrand in that final heat looked the worst on the running. Any thoughts on that? Get a peak peak at that. Can you judge? Someone’s running by the runner.

Brian Spin (23:49):

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can see, you can, you can see their, their cadence, their stride, how comfortable they look running.

Sevan Matossian (23:56):

Uh, Ariel low on 20th. Uh, should we be concerned? No. No. Or is it good news that so many good girls are down here?

John Young (24:04):

I think that’ll be her worst event.

Sevan Matossian (24:06):

Okay. Uh, Kelly Baker 22nd. Uh, Bailey Rail as, uh, JR was mentioning, where was she? Did I miss her? 22nd. 26th. Uh, 26th.

JR Howell (24:19):

She’s gonna climb for

Sevan Matossian (24:20):

Sure. Now look, now look at that. The, the Bailey Rail and Allison Scuds. You wouldn’t think that necessarily they’d be side by side, right? Do you think Allison’s scuds, we haven’t been mentioned her name. She, she really wants to go to the game. She’s been trying for a long time. The demo team captain, uh, does she have a chance?

JR Howell (24:37):

Yeah. A anyone who’s in the top 30 for sure still has a chance with a field of 60. Like, it’s not even, not, not

John Young (24:43):

One event.

Sevan Matossian (24:46):

Um, uh, number 30, Lauren Fisher Pro. Probably second most Instagram followers in the bunch right after Danny Spiegel. Oh. Or maybe Katherine. David Sutter. Man. There’s some heavyweights in here in terms of their, uh, CrossFit popularity. You got the kid Trita Smith in 33rd. Kelly Cl right next to Kelly Clark. Maybe one of the older athletes, uh, uh, besides China. Cho. Oh, maybe she’s the same age as China. How old’s China?

Brian Spin (25:10):

John Young (25:11):

There you go.

Sevan Matossian (25:15):

And, uh, I think as we go down here, there’s Freya Moose Burger Jr. Was talking about.

Brian Spin (25:24):

Yeah, the, the, when I did the correlation analysis from the East, actually, day one had the least correlation to the overall finish. So you’re gonna see a lot of movement after today. So yeah, I, I wouldn’t put a whole lot of weight into where they are after this event. Um, I think they’ll, they’ll, some of them will bounce back and if they’re in striking distance, they’ll be fine going in tomorrow. If, if they’re in one of the stronger athletes.

Sevan Matossian (25:51):

Uh, can we see the next page? And finally, uh, uh, Rebecca Fussier. So she’s cooked, huh? That’s it.

John Young (26:03):

Yeah, I think she’s done. And I think she’s gonna kill the next event.

Sevan Matossian (26:08):

She has to. Can she win

John Young (26:08):

It? But, uh, I she could, but I think she’s not, I don’t, I think it’s, uh, not gonna happen.

JR Howell (26:15):

She’s gonna have to, she’s gonna have to win one, which she definitely could on six,

John Young (26:19):

Then two,

JR Howell (26:20):

And then she’s probably gonna have to have two more Top tens. Sydney’s Worth finish was 58th, so only one spot better. And she also had a 34th, but she had a first, a ninth and a ninth.

John Young (26:35):

So Linda is not happening.

Sevan Matossian (26:37):

Wait, Cindy Sydnee Wells had a 58.

John Young (26:40):

Yeah, the muscle up workout.

Sevan Matossian (26:43):

Brian Spin (26:43):

Got zero.

Sevan Matossian (26:45):

So this still, lemme ask you this, lemme ask you guys this. Who’s a better CrossFitter? Uh, Mr. Spin, uh, Sidney Wells or Rebecca Fussier?

Brian Spin (26:53):

I’d say Sidney Wells with one hole.

Sevan Matossian (26:55):

Uh, bill Grundler, who’s a better CrossFitter? Sydnee Wells or Rebecca Fussier?

Bill Grundler (27:00):

I think depending on the programming, where, where what you have, Rebecca Fle is gonna be

Sevan Matossian (27:04):

Good. Thank you. Okay. One, one Jr uh, uh, Rebecca FTE or Sidney Wells, who’s a better CrossFitter?

JR Howell (27:11):

Mm. For what we know. Rebecca

Sevan Matossian (27:16):

Two to one. John Young. Don’t make me be the Tiebreak. Rebecca Fuser. Sydnee Wells. Who’s the better CrossFitter?

John Young (27:23):

Yeah, I kind of agree with Bill. Uh, it depends on the programming, right? Um, if it’s, if it’s more in the gym, CrossFit, uh, than I think Rebecca, if it’s outside more athletic stuff, which the games is, then I would say Sydnee.

Sevan Matossian (27:41):

Oh, shit. That doesn’t agree with Bill. That agrees with fucking Mr. Spin. We got a fucking two too. Bill, didn’t you pick Fussier?

Bill Grundler (27:47):

I just said Fussier.

Sevan Matossian (27:49):

You agree with Bill, but

John Young (27:49):

You pick Well as a CrossFitter, like I think in the gym, CrossFit workouts, and I think Rebecca’s better in that.

Sevan Matossian (27:56):

Oh, Nelly.

Brian Spin (27:57):

Okay. You gotta look at the,

Sevan Matossian (27:59):

Let’s see, how other,

Brian Spin (28:00):

Other than muscle ups. Sydnee did amazing. I don’t, you just named how many times Rebecca’s not gonna do well this weekend, right? She, she didn’t do well this time. She’s not gonna do well in Linda. She’s not gonna do well. And then one rep, max Snatch.

Sevan Matossian (28:13):

You think, you think Sydnee Wells snatches more than Rebecca Fle? Please tell me guys.

John Young (28:17):

Brian, we can flip it back to last year, 10 legless rope climbs for time. And then Sidney doesn’t make the games like it’s that simple. And Rebecca does. It’s very, it’s very on the programming between those two athletes. Like Sidney had some home run hits. And we’re talking last year

Brian Spin (28:35):

John Young (28:35):

Last year. Yeah, I know, but I’m saying this year, Sydney, with the programming had home runs and Rebecca’s not gonna have it. So I don’t think Rebecca’s going to make it, but as far as who’s better, I really think it just depends on what the programming is. The second 10 Lego rope climbs comes out. Sydnee doesn’t make it.

Sevan Matossian (28:53):

Eric Wise. Uh, who’s been on the podcast? Oh, Rebecca Winge, <laugh>

Bill Grundler (28:57):

Sevan Matossian (29:00):

Uh, Anthony tpa. Uh, call Brian Friend. Uh, d squad is blowing it. Brian’s not allowed to, uh, call in. He’s, he’s, he has a link if he wants to come in. Uh, uh, everyone snatches more than Rebecca. Uh, what are you talking about? 127 pounds, bill. That’s a problem.

Bill Grundler (29:17):

Sevan Matossian (29:18):

That’s a problem, huh?

Bill Grundler (29:19):

<laugh>? Yeah, it’s a problem. That’s a problem. And that’s with the way that the programming is set up. It’s not that, uh, I mean, we all, we all know how Rebecca moves. We’ve seen her do amazing things. We know that she’s getting stronger. If you look at her Instagram and stuff like that, you’ll see it’s like, oh yeah, I got, I’m, you know, this weight’s going up and that weight’s going up. But you get against the field. And if she did this bad in this event where she had to pull that sled, she’s gonna have Linda, which is gonna be tough. She’s gonna have the one rat snatch snatch, which is not gonna happen. Like the, the cards aren’t playing to her favor at all. I mean, even, even the one where she has to rep the snatches out, she may mo be able to.
