Sevan Matossian (00:00):
Is James coming? Everybody love everybody. I love that line. There he is. Bam. We’re Live. John Young, Tyler Watkins, Mr. James Townsend, and of course, the Beaver. No show is complete without the beaver. Uh, better late than never. Semi-finals are over. Uh, there’s no time better to talk about it than on Sunday morning, uh, with, uh, three of my favorites. And then my favorite, uh, beaver, Mr. Beaver. Um, crazy, uh, crazy few weeks. Uh, lots to cover. We’ll never get through all of it, but we will give you, uh, a hard 90 minutes. Um, lot, lots and lots of crazy stuff to talk about. Uh, all the different regions. Uh, the, the great, uh, GUI Ma Harris, who didn’t make it, Danny Spiegel who didn’t make it, uh, pat Vener, uh, yelling at us that he’s, he’s the best in the world. The, the champ. Uh, doing some, uh, doing some, some weird, uh, seventh place finish freaking us out. We got sleds that don’t work. Um, uh, we got events that were switched from a broadcast to a podcast. We’ll cover it all. Well, as much as we can. Um, any questions, feel free to call in. Uh, we’ll be reading the comments. You know, you guys know how it all works. Audrey, good morning. Uh, Jessica, good morning. Uh, the great, uh, Jedediah Snelson, a games athlete is in the chat. Happy Father’s Day from one to another. Same to you. Happy Father’s Day to you, Mr. Townsend.
John Young (01:25):
He can’t hear you.
Sevan Matossian (01:26):
Oh, okay. Is he muted? Oh. Oh, that’s why he put his hands up. I thought he was, he liked one of the topics. That’s why he put his hands up. Oh. Um, let me, I’ll, I’ll just call him and tell him. I think he has to go into the gears. Can you hear us, James? No, he can’t hear us. Okay. Hold on. Um, how did you know he couldn’t hear us? Cuz you’re, you’re an into it. He’s
John Young (01:47):
More Cause he, he pointed to his, yeah, I’m just observing.
Sevan Matossian (01:51):
<laugh>. Yeah, you’re, dude, let me see if I can get him on here.
John Young (01:57):
Happy Father’s Day to Larry Young. That’s my dad. You’re watching this Happy Father’s Day. Can you hear me?
Sevan Matossian (02:09):
Uh, no. So, Hey, James, in the, in the, um, bottom of the screen, there should be a button called settings. It looks like a gear. Do you see that?
John Young (02:20):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (02:20):
Click that. And then one of the tabs should say audio. It’s the third one down, I think.
John Young (02:27):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (02:28):
And then go to mic. And there should be a dropdown menu.
John Young (02:34):
Yep.
Sevan Matossian (02:35):
And then choose, uh, maybe choose is is one of the choices. Your computer
John Young (02:39):
Default. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (02:43):
Let’s see. How about now?
John Young (02:51):
It’s not even, it’s not comfortable. Oh,
Sevan Matossian (02:53):
There it
John Young (02:53):
Works. We can hear you.
Sevan Matossian (02:55):
Yeah. Can you hear us?
John Young (02:57):
We can hear you,
Sevan Matossian (02:58):
James. Okay, now go to now James, go to the one below that and go to speaker and choose and choose the right speaker. Also choose like your headset. Oh, Hal Robert says we should use sign language. I don’t know if James knows Sign language.
John Young (03:13):
<laugh>.
Sevan Matossian (03:16):
Can you hear us James? Both. Yeah. Yeah, baby. God, I love having my, oh, listen to this Dick. But just, uh, the Boomers explaining how to use a computer. Why can’t you attack James? Why do you have to attack me? <laugh>
John Young (03:30):
James is
Sevan Matossian (03:31):
Going fucking, why do I have to always has to be me.
Tyler Watkins (03:34):
That’s not even accurate. You’re a Gen Xer, aren’t
John Young (03:36):
You?
Sevan Matossian (03:37):
I, uh, yeah. I’m not a, I’m not definitely not a boomer. Uh, Manny Spiegel, uh, today on the seven podcast, seven welcomes Tyler Watkins from the Sigma Chi House and John Young from his bathroom, his shot.
John Young (03:51):
We’re working on it. Me and my wife are working into desk about to have a plant in the background. We’re gonna get real deal.
Sevan Matossian (03:58):
Look at James’s house. What? Look at him. He’s got it. Looks like his wife decorated that shit. So I wonder how, why is James skirting
John Young (04:04):
All the hell? Yeah, she did
Sevan Matossian (04:06):
All the put downs. He got a printer back there. Trying to look smart.
John Young (04:09):
Yep.
Sevan Matossian (04:11):
Okay. Uh, I want to go. I, I I really wanna go, uh, Mr. Beaver, I wanna go through all of the, if we can just go to the leaderboards and let’s start with, um, we’ll start with, uh, Africa, and then we’ll go to, uh, south America. Are the, are those the two smallest ones? And then
John Young (04:27):
Asia.
Sevan Matossian (04:28):
And then Asia. Okay. So let’s do, let’s go through Africa, Asia, and, um, south America quickly. And then, and then, and then we’ll move from there. Although I think we might get stuck in South America for a second. Uh, Africa, we have Michelle, uh, Basse, uh, going to the CrossFit games. And how about this, uh, other lady? Does that go number, does number two go from Africa?
Tyler Watkins (04:49):
No, it’s just one,
John Young (04:50):
Right?
Sevan Matossian (04:50):
No, just one. Just one. Yeah. And, uh, she trains with our good friend and a regular on the show. Uh, Mr. Taylor Self from SMTP training, who also has a show, I think every Wednesday at 2:00 PM on the seven podcast. I think that’s what it’s, and, and then let’s cruise over to the, uh, anything you guys wanna say here. Other than that, um, no one here has a chance in hell. D does Michelle make it even in the top 30 at the CrossFit games?
John Young (05:15):
I think she can make it in the top 30. Um, but that will be kind of what I expect her to be like in that, in that 30th range. Give or take five spots. But happy for Taylor Self-made and her.
Sevan Matossian (05:29):
Yeah. Good point. Yeah. Yeah. Very exciting. Any chance anyone from Africa, you guys, uh, uh, win an event, uh, at the games?
John Young (05:37):
No. No.
Sevan Matossian (05:39):
And, and, and the reason why I bring that up is difficult.
John Young (05:42):
Very difficult.
Sevan Matossian (05:43):
Say that again, Mr. James.
John Young (05:47):
I, I’d say very difficult
Sevan Matossian (05:49):
To win an event.
John Young (05:52):
Yes. Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (05:54):
It’s just that you get, you get these smaller areas like South America, right? And, um, gee, gee shows up there in gee one, three events. Right? Even though he’s still, he has no chance in winning the CrossFit games.
John Young (06:06):
Michelle’s not a specialist though, gee is a, the specialist of specialists. That guy is made of fast twitch fibers through and through.
Sevan Matossian (06:16):
Um, you think Michelle ha belongs at the games? You think, you think, uh, Africa deserves a, that’s the way, right way to run the sport. Let the continent have one person.
Tyler Watkins (06:26):
It’s definitely the right way to run the sport. Um, I mean, if we’re, if we’re being fair, I don’t know that the women in Africa deserve a spot, nor nor them in. But I, I do think that they, they should have one. We should always let them have that carrot.
Sevan Matossian (06:40):
Every con, every continent. Why not Antarctica?
Tyler Watkins (06:44):
<laugh>,
John Young (06:45):
<laugh> the fit thing. You know what’s sad is they probably would place the same as these people, so Oh
Sevan Matossian (06:50):
No.
John Young (06:50):
Oh no. They would be 40th place. I don’t know why Asia has two people.
Tyler Watkins (06:56):
Well,
John Young (06:56):
Do they, do they have two people? Because Roman used to be in Asia. Is that why? Yes. Yes. Because that’s, in my opinion, that’s, I don’t under That’s ridiculous that you can’t just change that.
Tyler Watkins (07:06):
Me. Yeah. I, I agree totally. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>.
Sevan Matossian (07:09):
Hey, isn’t that a, uh, look at number four. That, uh, that, that girl’s name isn’t that like, um, in the Bible? Leviticus, isn’t that Levi, Leviticus?
John Young (07:16):
It’s spelled a little differently, but yeah. Alright, alright.
Sevan Matossian (07:19):
I’m trying to, I’m trying to act smart around my, my
John Young (07:20):
Bible, but Leviticus
Sevan Matossian (07:22):
<laugh>. Alright, let’s, uh, let’s go over to, uh, the boys over in Africa. Um, it, it happened again, right? The the immortal one is going. Jason said kinda
John Young (07:35):
<laugh>. Frank keeps going.
Tyler Watkins (07:36):
He’s a monster.
John Young (07:39):
I don’t know if he’s a monster or if nobody else is good <laugh> like, for lack of a better word. No,
Tyler Watkins (07:47):
He’s, I mean, like, definitely he’s a monster. Like you would like, I’d be proud to have, have him in my gym and be able to work out with him. But I mean, well also the rest of the field’s not that great. Um, in, in comparison to the rest of the, the world. For sure.
John Young (08:01):
For
Tyler Watkins (08:02):
Sure.
Sevan Matossian (08:02):
Uh, what about this, uh, Renee’s bringing up the Africa team pop for peds. Is that a big surprise? Is that a true story?
Tyler Watkins (08:11):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (08:12):
Yeah. I’m cruising over to the best food stores. Do
John Young (08:15):
They backfill to the second place?
Tyler Watkins (08:19):
What’d you say?
John Young (08:20):
Do they backfill to second place for
Tyler Watkins (08:22):
Africa? I mean, I think so, but it’s like, you know, we always have this problem with Africa. Are they gonna be able to go, are they gonna be able to afford to go? They have to put those wheels in motion faster than everybody else because it’s more expensive. They have, they need so much more runway to be able to afford to come here.
Sevan Matossian (08:39):
Over here on the barbell spin, the fastest up updates in the CrossFit space by far. And the most comprehensive run by our, um, our friend Brian Spin. He writes, uh, one week ago today on his Instagram account, a member of the first place team at the Africa semifinals has tested positive for a banned substance. The team has filled, uh, filed an appeal with CrossFit. Uh, we’ll see
John Young (09:05):
If, you know, you’re taking stuff, why file an appeal?
Sevan Matossian (09:09):
So you think they’re innocent, you think, you think soon as they file an appeal, we should just let ’em go. Just like, oh, oh, I didn’t know you were gonna push back. You’re, you’re good to go.
John Young (09:17):
Or bad. Sorry. I 1% of the appeals actually, like, it’s already hard enough to get an appeal to go through. Even if you haven’t, didn’t take anything and you were on like 0.1 picoliter of something that, where it really was a contaminated substance. Like, I don’t know how many cases that is the case, but it’s a hard time just to, to get that to go through. If you know you’re taking stuff, which in Africa and South America, I’m just gonna default to you were taking stuff. Um, why file?
Sevan Matossian (09:50):
Is it cause it’s legal there, not because they’re bad people. You’re just saying it’s more common there, it’s like more accepted. Is that why? Or are you saying they’re bad people? They cheat? No, I’m not saying they’re saying people. They’re cheaters or are you just saying culturally it’s more accepted there
John Young (10:03):
When the
Sevan Matossian (10:04):
I think it’s culturally more accepted there. Don’t you remember in high school it’s like, hey, you go to Tijuana and get some drugs. Go ahead James. Sorry.
James Townsend (10:10):
Culturally it’s more accepted.
Sevan Matossian (10:12):
Yeah,
John Young (10:15):
They still gotta go by. Like
Sevan Matossian (10:15):
I heard in Dubai,
John Young (10:16):
We gotta go by,
Sevan Matossian (10:17):
I heard in Dubai, when you get off the plane, they give you a clean needle and just a bag of roads. It’s like, it’s like laid whenever you get to Hawaii. Is that how that works? Right, right, right.
John Young (10:29):
What’s the point of doing the appeal? Just so you can appear that it was contaminated? You’re still gonna get banned for four years. Just say. Yeah, we weren’t at the level that America was. So we want to uh, we want to, even the playing field red, we had this concept red. You wanna talk about this concept that we talked about? S I think Africa and South America should be allowed to use drugs. And John
Sevan Matossian (10:51):
Talked about this. No one else agreed. Wow. Wow.
John Young (10:53):
And then as soon as one of their people gets in the top 10, so South America, cuz gee got in the top 10, you’re not allowed to use drugs anymore.
Sevan Matossian (11:01):
Wow. Wow. I
John Young (11:04):
Mean, why not? Do you not think that would make it more entertaining? Like, and it’s, and it’s okay. Wow. Like it’s okay. It’s accepted. We all know it. It’s okay. It’s not looked down upon. And then once they make the top 10, are
Sevan Matossian (11:16):
You being serious or are you just like, Hey, it’s so prevalent Cause I’m, I’m struggling here. I’m struggling a little bit.
John Young (11:22):
Uh, a a little of both. Obviously.
Sevan Matossian (11:24):
I wanna, I wanna, can we experience, can we experiment with it in an alternate reality? Here’s the thing that’s open
John Young (11:30):
Reality.
Sevan Matossian (11:31):
You’re not gonna be able to roll it backwards. That’s the problem. James, how many, how many James how many, um, do you have any thoughts on, on, on drugs in the games? The general wisdom is this, and correct me if I’m wrong, a lot of people are doing steroids. The best people are not doing steroids. I agree. Did you have thought? You do agree with that? You think, okay, thank you. And then, and then, and then to answer, um, uh, Mr. John Young’s, uh, question, if you could help us out here, why appeal if you know you’re doing it? Do you think that that three of the people on the team maybe really believe they’re not and one of the dudes did and he is just not saying it?
James Townsend (12:10):
You know, it,
(12:14):
It comes down with, uh, with supplements, right? So, so I always tell athletes, if you don’t have the nsf.org label on your supplements, don’t take anything. If they don’t have that label on their supplements, do not take it. Because automatically, I think automatically that that company is hiding something. Or that company just doesn’t wanna pay the extra money to, um, test their supplements, you know, vigorously. Right? But if we don’t have that label on there, supplement you could potentially pop for, for something. And so, and, and, and that’s why I think a lot of people use that excuse. Oh, I didn’t know I was taking it. Oh, I’m gonna go ahead and pill, because I was taking the supplement. I didn’t know, I didn’t do my due diligence. I didn’t go ahead and go to the whose side the website put in, um, whatever supplement I’m taking, you know, c4. And it didn’t, you know, I, I didn’t go ahead and check it. So
Sevan Matossian (13:21):
You think that is c4? Nsf, uh, I guess it does Hill or drink that shit. I guess it doesn’t matter. He shoots Roy’s anyway. It doesn’t matter.
James Townsend (13:29):
<laugh>, right? Right.
John Young (13:31):
Well, CrossFit has a, a, I don’t know where it’s at. It looked up a long time ago, but like the, a site where it has three foundations of these pre-workouts or all certified under the three major things. I’m pretty sure NSF is one of them where, and it has all the supplements that were like okayed by these three companies that do safe supplements. And like I used to drink, uh, total war for my pre-workout, but total war is, they do other stuff too. They do power lifting and stuff too. And then, uh, once I got like a little bit more serious about it, I looked up that list and I found a pre-workout that was on all three of them. And then that’s the only stuff I take now because it’s safe for all three of them. And I don’t know why anybody, and I’m not, I’m not even close to anything. So I don’t know why. If you’re semi-final level, why you wouldn’t do that due diligence. It’s not hard to do at all.
James Townsend (14:31):
It’s not, it’s not. But, but a lot of people, even on the Olympic level, uh, ufc, they, they, they really don’t,
Sevan Matossian (14:39):
They really don’t what Jan,
James Townsend (14:41):
They really don’t go ahead and take, you know, take their supplement, go ahead and go to the USADA website to check and see if they’re, what, whatever’s on the label on that supplement, it’s banned.
John Young (14:54):
That’s really,
James Townsend (14:56):
Really the general public, you know? No, nobody really cares to do that. You
John Young (15:01):
Know,
Sevan Matossian (15:03):
I think even CrossFit has a guy you can call. I think, I think the athletes, the, at least the good athletes can just call Curtis Bowler and he’s cool as shit. And, and, and you can just be like, Hey dude, can I take this? Uh, Eric Wise, um, is everyone on the team banned for four years or just the athlete?
Tyler Watkins (15:19):
Just athlete. Athlete.
Sevan Matossian (15:20):
Really?
John Young (15:21):
Everyone we’re disagreeing.
Tyler Watkins (15:25):
Oh, I mean,
John Young (15:26):
Yeah.
Tyler Watkins (15:26):
Yeah. I feel like it’s just the athlete. Yeah. The team can’t go to the games, but Right. A further sanction goes to just the athlete,
James Townsend (15:34):
Right? Yep.
John Young (15:36):
Gotcha.
Sevan Matossian (15:37):
Alright, Africa, well, at least you have something exciting going on. Uh, of course. Uh, Michelle Bassinet a favorite of the, uh, Chevon podcast. Bassinet, sorry. And, uh, and, and Jason Smith been around forever. That’s cool. They’re recognizable names. And then I guess, uh, we’ll figure out what happens with the team. Do they backfill?
Tyler Watkins (15:55):
Yeah, but I mean, it’s 50. I don’t even think it’s 50 50 that the team goes.
Sevan Matossian (16:01):
Oh, because like, they can’t afford it or get their shit together to make it there in time. Right? Pass visas, passports, the whole thing. Nine yard.
Tyler Watkins (16:08):
Yeah.
Sevan Matossian (16:09):
Alright. Freaking
John Young (16:10):
South America last year. They backfilled all the way down to seven, six for six. Somebody hop on their teams. Holy shit.
Sevan Matossian (16:18):
Holy
John Young (16:18):
Shit. Like, I know I’m kind of being hard on those continents, but there’s a reason for it.
Tyler Watkins (16:24):
Dude.
Sevan Matossian (16:26):
That’s, Hey, isn’t the Tour de France like that too? Like
John Young (16:29):
Used to be? They’re, it, it is relatively clean now. Uh, like they went really, really hard on it after Lance Armstrong, like really, really hard. Like, you were banned for life if you got caught with anything. Um, okay,
Sevan Matossian (16:43):
Let’s move over to, uh, south America. Crazy. Uh, Greg Perry. Which supplements are most likely to be contaminated? I’m asking for a friend. Is there any company that’s like, Hey, if you want this good shit, take this. But you’re not
John Young (16:55):
Passing a ball if you’re taking that. It’s contaminated. Yeah. <laugh>.
Tyler Watkins (16:58):
Percent percent.
Sevan Matossian (17:01):
Uh, Jake Chapman, Emily Abbotts fella had his genitals added to the band list.
John Young (17:06):
<laugh>.
Sevan Matossian (17:07):
Okay. Um,
Tyler Watkins (17:08):
Victoria.
Sevan Matossian (17:09):
Uh, Victoria Campos. Uh, she, she was, she struggled right at first. She wasn’t in, oh no, she got a second. Uh, workout
John Young (17:16):
One. Go scroll over. You’re on workout two for the last one.
Sevan Matossian (17:21):
It looked for. Okay. So it looked for a second. She wasn’t gonna make it right after day one. She didn’t, she wasn’t doing great. Right. Pulled her shit together. Uh, she’s going to the CrossFit games and then Alexia Williams. They take two.
Tyler Watkins (17:33):
Yep. Mm-hmm.
John Young (17:34):
<affirmative>.
Sevan Matossian (17:34):
Okay. And has, has Alexia Williams ever been to the games?
Tyler Watkins (17:37):
No,
John Young (17:38):
I don’t believe so.
Sevan Matossian (17:40):
All right. Uh, welcome to the games. Cool. Great to see you. And Victor, uh, Victoria Campos, uh, mayhem Athlete. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And how about this, uh, uh, lady Alexia Williams.
Tyler Watkins (17:51):
I don’t know about her.
Sevan Matossian (17:54):
All right, let’s cruise over to the boys. Uh, this is where things get really weird. Now if we
John Young (18:02):
<inaudible>,
Sevan Matossian (18:03):
If we know that. If we know that.
John Young (18:09):
And then is that a person related to Za
Sevan Matossian (18:13):
Ho? Hold on, hold on real quick. Let’s find out. Maybe it, do all the drug tests come out all at once? Has CrossFit announced? Hey, we no, Tyler Watkin
Tyler Watkins (18:23):
This year. Last year. Last year. They, they trickled them out. They, it seemed like, because they don’t always compete at the same time. You know, wasn’t Africa was one of the, it was earlier on.
John Young (18:34):
No.
Tyler Watkins (18:35):
Yeah. So Africa was the first one to get released. And then so South America was was last was the last week, right?
John Young (18:44):
Yeah.
Tyler Watkins (18:45):
Yeah. So they’ll be the last ones. We’ll, we’ll find out about them. Last I would suspect,
Sevan Matossian (18:50):
Uh, Alexia Trains in Spain with training, uh, culture along with
John Young (18:57):
You Got it.
Sevan Matossian (18:58):
Anas. Anas, go ahead James. You wanna take a shot at it? Where you about to?
James Townsend (19:07):
Anna Sti.
Sevan Matossian (19:08):
Anna Sti. Okay. Good. Thank you. Anna Sti. Anna Sti. Okay, cool. Who, who’s the, who’s the head coach over there? Uh, it’s someone I’ve heard their name before. Who, who’s the head coach over there?
Tyler Watkins (19:19):
That’s a John question. Oh, John, do you know,
Sevan Matossian (19:21):
Is that where Ola Tai and those guys are? And Fabi and Benito? Yes. And Okay.
John Young (19:25):
All, yeah, all the people from Spain are all from the training culture team. Um, if it, if it’s Spain next to their name, that’s, that’s the only, I have not heard anybody from Spain. Not from that, uh, camp. Okay. I’ll look up who’s the head coach there though?
Sevan Matossian (19:44):
Uh, so, so we’re, uh, uh, Kai, uh, Veni, uh, jacked out of his mind. Uh, ca Calin, um, za, let me pull up his, uh, Instagram. Uh, he, he’s jacked out of his mind too, right?
Tyler Watkins (19:57):
Mm-hmm. <affirmative>,
Sevan Matossian (19:59):
You think you can look, Kai is, you think you can look at a guy and tell if he’s on something, uh, James, or you think that that’s just rude
James Townsend (20:06):
<laugh>. That’s the first sign. I mean, that’s, that, that, that and how they move if their body move fluently or if their body just, you know, just whole body just turns, you know,
John Young (20:20):
He Oh, wow. Doesn’t look like he’s on drugs in these pictures though.
Sevan Matossian (20:24):
No. So you’re saying that basically you get so muscle bound that it changes actually the biomechanics of how you move?
Tyler Watkins (20:32):
Absolutely. See to me, it’s vaness. It’s like there’s a certain vaness that goes through it.
John Young (20:36):
There’s a good, there’s a good giveaway. If you got a snake in your arm, like instead of just a bicep vein, it looks like a snake vein has a good giver. The one, the one that’s
James Townsend (20:46):
Coming from your neck.
John Young (20:47):
I mean, you’re on more stuff than just steroids if you got that going on. But, uh, like, just, just the snakey arm veins and good giveaway. Uh, and, and, uh, yeah, somebody said James is right about movement. That’s why Hillard snatch is so trash, because all the stuff
Sevan Matossian (21:03):
<laugh>. Oh, Andrew, God, I won’t tolerate that. Tolerate that. Uh, James is right about the movement. Okay. Yeah. So you start moving like an action figure. Like one of those cheap ones that doesn’t like pivot at a lot of points. <laugh>. Okay. Right. All right. Right. Uh, so, so gis only chance, going back to that leaderboard, this guy does look good. The gee’s only chance of making it to the, um, games is if one of these guys pops now.
Tyler Watkins (21:32):
Yes. Oh, or yeah.
Sevan Matossian (21:34):
And, and so have we been told, has CrossFit announced that, um, and anything that would, would make us think that they’ve already, uh, everyone in South America is in the clear. Have they said okay, we
John Young (21:46):
No, we don’t know yet.
Sevan Matossian (21:47):
Is is there a website we can go to? Is there, is, does the games have a, a section that’s like dudes who popped,
John Young (21:55):
Uh, like talking about website?
Tyler Watkins (21:57):
Yeah. They don’t keep it updated. They just make, they just make announcements.
Sevan Matossian (22:00):
Okay.
John Young (22:01):
And probably has a list of that though.
Sevan Matossian (22:03):
Okay. So I guess, I guess basically that’s it. I’ll go over to, uh, Brian. So we know that no one in South America is popped, but we’re not a hundred percent sure that no one will.
Tyler Watkins (22:11):
Right.
John Young (22:12):
We don’t have their results yet.
Tyler Watkins (22:14):
We don’t, we won’t know for another week or two, I would imagine.
Sevan Matossian (22:18):
Okay. Alright. Uh, well, congratulations. Uh, anyone wanna say anything about GH not making it? What happened, James, is, is this a, uh, what happened to, uh, ghee? Is this a, um, uh, you’re a young athlete, uh, expert. What happened here? It,
James Townsend (22:32):
It just seemed like he couldn’t, uh, get his footing after workout one. And then the other two guys were just consistent across the board.
Tyler Watkins (22:42):
He, he took a heavy hit in event one. Um, yeah. Yeah. But I will say that him and Susa, they were, they were neck and neck, um, up to the finish. I think Gee was held back. Um, you know, this is always my opinion on scoring. Um, but at the end of the day, like when you take a hit like that in event one and you don’t make it, like, don’t be surprised.
Sevan Matossian (23:07):
What, what was his mean?
James Townsend (23:08):
I mean, did I, I mean, but, but the, the guy, his, his worst finish was six.
Tyler Watkins (23:16):
Who? Susan? Yeah. Six. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I totally agree.
Sevan Matossian (23:19):
And there were only 30 athletes in South America, right? Not 60 mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Okay. Right.
John Young (23:25):
Yeah. I mean, it’s just a case of being in a smaller division. This almost happened, or this happened to Roman. He had to do the last chance qualifier a couple years ago. Um, if you look at Geese finishes, I mean, it’s first, second, sixth, first, first, third. I mean, he can’t do much more than he did, uh, right after the first. It’s just, you cannot get a 15th in one of these regions like Asia or South America or Africa. Like, as soon as that happens, all those other two guys, they don’t have to be better than you. They just have to be second best or third best the whole time. And since it’s such a small region, there’s not, the talent pool is not very big and it’s way easier for them to be second or third best. So even if G is better, it just doesn’t matter because he took that hit on the event one, it’s literally, it literally like, just doesn’t matter how good gee can be if you take,
Sevan Matossian (24:23):
So here’s what I’m hearing from you guys. He took a ass whooping. No, it’s not that Gee fell apart. The marriage or shitty program from mayhem or mental emotional stress and stress and pressure. He, he fucking did great. He had one bad event and the other two guys capitalized on it.
Tyler Watkins (24:41):
He in the Wow. Cause the field’s so small in the events that he did poorly on it, it really hurt him. But in the events that he smoked, he, he couldn’t really strut his stuff. The guys could be way farther back on than him on the snatch. They don’t have a games level snatch in relation to him. He’s so much better, but he’s not rewarded for that. And so he, he just in a field this small, it’s tough to strut your stuff.
Sevan Matossian (25:09):
And, and, and we hate that as fans, right? Cuz the sentiment is we love that guy. He’s kind of, he’s kind of like the a south. Not only is he, he’s transcended just being a South American athlete. We, we’ve, we’ve kind of, uh, three wins at the games. Everyone wants to see him come. He’s kind of like the, uh, anti Chris spiel, right? He’s on the other end of like, just being the little guy who you kind of, or the, he, he’s, he’s kind of a specialist that we wanna see there. We lo we we love him, right? Well,
John Young (25:35):
He can win events. I I
Sevan Matossian (25:36):
He’s in that Klon Colton Merton’s category. Yes. But he is also from South America. He’s, yeah.
John Young (25:41):
Like I think everybody wants to see like, the winners should not be a specialist, but everybody enjoys seeing people be dominant in stuff that they’re amazing at. And it’s, it’s fun to have specialists in the games because I mean, you wanna see like can, uh, you know, when Fraser won the handstand walk, it were the ring muscle ups and beat Alex Smith or Noah Olson. You’re like, that’s insane. Cuz these guys, this is what they do. Their thing is gymnastics and Fraser still beats him. You wanna see where Madeiros is against ghee in a sprint. Right? Right. You know, gee’s probably gonna win cuz that he’s a freaking fast Twitch monster. But like, it’s like you want specialists there so you can see the best that CrossFit has to offer in any given event. And since he’s not there, we don’t get to see the best cleaner or snatcher at, I mean I’m, you know, there are good cleaners and snatchers out there, but we don’t get to see the best that CrossFit has to offer.
Tyler Watkins (26:42):
To piggyback off of this, I was talking to Chase about this with, with Ghee, you’re gonna see top events. You’re, he’s gonna get first in something or he is gonna get top three from time to time. He’s also gonna have some bad events. But with kake, like he’s probably just gonna do o okay to not grate the entire weekend. So from an investment perspective, from CrossFit perspective, you want g to be at this thing you really don’t like, it’s not that great that K K’s gonna be there. I that’s gonna be a hot take. But that’s it. That’s how I feel about it.
Sevan Matossian (27:15):
Uh, um, are you
James Townsend (27:16):
Are I think are, are you, are you saying that because of popularity wise or
Tyler Watkins (27:22):
No, from Hi. On the field, he will have great, like GH will have great events and kake wa he just, he’ll do okay the whole weekend or
John Young (27:32):
Weekend he would play higher at the games.
Tyler Watkins (27:34):
Yes. You’re
Sevan Matossian (27:34):
Gonna, he’s gonna win some, some events. You’re saying KAKE is not gonna win some events,
John Young (27:37):
Right? Yes. KAKE is probably gonna be 30 to 40 if the entire time
Tyler Watkins (27:41):
There’ll be a story to tell with gh, there will not be
John Young (27:44):
As tell Yeah. That, that’s fair. I almost think you want to think who would place highest at the games in whatever region. That’s who we want to go to. The games.
Sevan Matossian (27:54):
Yeah. He is a bit of a bit of a darling in the games. Another thing that kind of supports our theory is he doesn’t have an excuse here in his Instagram. Some of the athletes who didn’t make it that we’ll talk about later, they got, they got, they at least allude to an excuse. There’s nothing here in gis. Uh, Instagram, I went through the last like nine posts and click translation and I didn’t see anything where he’s making an excuse. Like, like, you know what I mean? Like his, some, like his dog got run over by a car, you know what I mean? His sister went to prison. Like, you know what I mean? There’s no, there’s no story. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> his wife. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, he caught his wife cheating on him. Nothing. Sorry. I I made all those up. Fabricated all those. His dog and his wife and his sister are fine. Um, so, okay. Uh, and, and I’ve also heard that he is now in Cookeville that he, I don’t know why he flew there, but, oh, maybe it was for Tyler’s wedding. Here he is, pictures of him in Tyler Christopher’s wedding or, uh, or attending it. But, um,
John Young (28:45):
Maybe congratulations, Tyler and Bailey,
Sevan Matossian (28:49):
Maybe he was also there to be around, um, the Mayhan team of Missouri. Uh, what happens to a young athlete like this, James, is he is, uh, come back stronger or, um, or, or get a job at fucking, uh, Jiffy Lube and start changing oil and, and, and
James Townsend (29:06):
<laugh> No, definitely don’t get a job at Jiffy Lube, but he’ll come back stronger. I mean, he, he just had comes back. He just had a m Yeah, he just had a mishap from that one workout.
Sevan Matossian (29:17):
That’s it. Um, did, did he allude to the fact that the other guys were on drugs? Did, did G allude to that?
James Townsend (29:25):
Anyone? No. I don’t, I I don’t think he had snitched like that.
John Young (29:28):
No, I don’t think he out
Sevan Matossian (29:30):
<laugh>.
Tyler Watkins (29:35):
I like it. I like that he didn’t post anything. Like that’s a sort of a standup move. Like, I just need to work and maybe just not talk about it. Just go, just go back to work.
Sevan Matossian (29:45):
Um, uh, so this is, this is this from the CrossFit Games? Instagram. Oh, okay. Uh, is, is is Caleb, is this from CrossFit Games? Yes. Okay. So this says, uh, thank you.
