#810 – CrossFit OPEN – 23.2 w/ Hiller, Self, Howell, Ingraham & Friend

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

Or how, Hey, I’m more live

Taylor Self (00:01):

Texting me. Get on here. Dude, I’m so addicted to Mexican food.

Sevan Matossian (00:06):

Uh, Caleb. Hi. Good to see you. Um, welcome everybody. Chase Ingram, Taylor self. Uh, Mr. Brian Friend. Uh, thank you, uh, chase and Brian for coming on last minute to observe and make sure, uh, as he gets further on with his California Hormones program, he’s becoming more and more unruly. So we need more and more judges. I

Taylor Self (00:30):

Was gonna say, did you have Brian and I in here to lifeguard this whole situation? <laugh>,

Sevan Matossian (00:35):

Uh, Mr. Suza. See you later, buddy.

Taylor Self (00:39):

Who’s leaving?

Sevan Matossian (00:40):

Uh, 23.2. Uh, who here? Uh, Brian did you watch Mr. Friend? Did you watch, uh, 23.2 with, um, Roman Koff and Mr. Ner?

Brian Friend (00:49):

I stopped watching after Kathleen and Joel.

Sevan Matossian (00:52):

Okay. You got your fill

Taylor Self (00:53):

Brian Friend (00:53):

No, I watched all of them. I watched all

Sevan Matossian (00:55):

Of them. Uh, Taylor, were you able to catch the, uh, event?

Taylor Self (00:59):

Yeah, I had just eaten like a, a bagel with locks, you know what I mean? Cream cheese, salmon. I understand. So I needed like an hour to digest.

Taylor Self (01:06):

Locks are just so, I wash them.

Sevan Matossian (01:08):

Uh, lucky camera straps from Australia, 1499. Thank you, dude. Thank you. Uh, what crew? And thank you for my, uh, custom, uh, mouse, uh, pad from Lucky Camera straps. Chase. Don’t be jealous. Um, and, uh, Jr did you get a chance to watch it?

JR Howell (01:24):

Yeah, I watched all of it.

Sevan Matossian (01:25):

And how did you have time to watch it? You’re always, whenever I call you, you’re like, oh, I gotta go. Someone’s crying.

Taylor Self (01:31):

Sevan Matossian (01:32):

But you have time to, um, but you have time to watch 23.2.

JR Howell (01:36):

Yeah, I watched it, uh, in the Lowe’s parking lot while I <laugh> decided

Sevan Matossian (01:40):

A diaper. Well, that makes me feel better. I hope it was miserable for you

JR Howell (01:43):

While I decided how much tape I have to go buy <laugh> like I do every Thursday.

Sevan Matossian (01:49):

Uh, in, in regards to, you’re talking about the shuttles friends?

JR Howell (01:52):

Yeah, just whatever the layout is.

Sevan Matossian (01:54):

And, and what kind of tape do you use? Just, uh, paint painter’s tape?

JR Howell (01:57):

No, uh, 3M

Taylor Self (01:58):

Tough painters tape. You’re an idiot.

Sevan Matossian (02:01):

Oh, okay. Well, there you go. True. That’s why

JR Howell (02:03):

Said painters 3M duct tape

Taylor Self (02:06):

Immediately off the floor. Yeah. Painters tape and rubber mating do not mix.

Sevan Matossian (02:10):

And from, uh, it’s, I I what why is that? I have painter’s tape on my floors for my kids. I, I bought all different colors. I bought like, you know, like 10 different colors and I use it like to mark out the floor. I mean, they don’t know

Taylor Self (02:20):

How to use painters tape.

JR Howell (02:21):

Oh, we that too. They’ve, they’ve, they’ve been there since that interview you did with Dave eight years ago?

Sevan Matossian (02:27):

Yeah. Oh, is that why they

Taylor Self (02:28):

Haven’t come up yet? That’s the point.

Sevan Matossian (02:30):

Oh, okay. All right. Uh, and Chase, did you see it? Did you by any chance to get a chance to see it? Oh yeah.

Taylor Self (02:36):

Yeah. Start to finish.

Sevan Matossian (02:37):

Uh, chase was there last week for the, um, one of the most memorable, uh, open workouts in the history of CrossFit, uh, 23 point, uh, one. And Andrew, did you see it? Did you see uh, Roman and Ner go?

Taylor Self (02:50):

Sevan Matossian (02:51):

Yeah. I think it’s pretty crazy. Uh, I didn’t watch last week and kudos to CrossFit for picking Vener and Koff, cuz I really wanted to, uh, see that go down. Um, you guys impressed? Brian impressed with the performances. I thought Pat was gonna win it.

Brian Friend (03:06):

Uh, just

Sevan Matossian (03:06):

Me too. The fir At least a at least a,

Brian Friend (03:10):

I think, uh, Roman had a better strategy than him. I think Pat, I mean, I thought within two minutes I was like, pat started too hot and maybe he’ll keep it up. But I, I was skeptical and he was not able to,

Sevan Matossian (03:20):

What do you mean too hot? I mean, he was only one, he was only half a shuttle sprint ahead most of the time, right?

Brian Friend (03:26):

Yeah. But it was just the, it’s not necessarily the rate at which he’s doing him, it’s how he looks doing it at that rate. And I thought it, I just thought it looked less sustainable than the pace Roman was moving at, even though it was a fairly similar rep count early

Sevan Matossian (03:40):

On. Uh, Taylor surprised at the outcome of that. A

Taylor Self (03:44):

I w I was, I was surprised Pat didn’t win. Yeah, I think that’s, as far as my expertise on the subject goes, I thought that Pat would be a better runner and maybe a little better at burpees because he’s a little bit lighter. Um, and he’s great at upper body pulling, so I thought he was gonna take the dub, but he couldn’t, couldn’t swing him, man.

Sevan Matossian (04:03):

Um, and, and, uh, JR to you, h how long it, it wasn’t until the end that Roman passed him, right? Like at the very, very end. Like one minute.

JR Howell (04:12):

Yeah. Like in that, in that last set, you would say like the last round of work. So they, um, yeah, I mean, it, it, I don’t know. To me, and I would, I would love to ask Pat what, where he started to feel it. Like if it was, if his legs just started getting juiced and he just couldn’t make himself run any faster if it was just heart rate. If it was, um, um, that his low back was blowing up from all the bending over and all the hinges, like who knows what it was, you know,

Taylor Self (04:39):

I know where I, I started to feel it.

Sevan Matossian (04:41):

And where’s that

Taylor Self (04:43):

<laugh> at the start, I just, it just was a hard workout. I felt probably got really hard at the 25 burpee pullups from 20 to 25.

Sevan Matossian (04:52):

Uh, vindicate. Get your CEO shirts open next week in Omaha. Any of you media boys have a hookup for me to get an invite? Oh, it isn’t Omaha next week. Have they announced that?

Brian Friend (05:01):

Yeah, they announced it on the, uh, livestream today.

Sevan Matossian (05:04):

Is that at Casper Bower’s, uh, house?

Brian Friend (05:08):

I don’t, Stacy Tova.

Taylor Self (05:09):

Sevan Matossian (05:10):

Ah, okay.

Taylor Self (05:11):

Wester Lynn’s old place.

Sevan Matossian (05:13):

Ah, okay.

Taylor Self (05:14):

And they recently moved into a facility that they basically built from the ground up, so it should be pretty nice.

Sevan Matossian (05:19):

Awesome. Um, chase, why couldn’t Pat just dig? Why couldn’t Pat just like be like, fuck, I’m not gonna lose.

Taylor Self (05:27):

I think he’s a pussy in

Taylor Self (05:28):

No way, shape or form that I think Pat was winning that workout.

Sevan Matossian (05:31):

Really? You didn’t, you didn’t from the, from the beginning. You knew?

Taylor Self (05:35):

Uh, from the beginning I was like, oh wow. Pat’s put it on him and I was a little nervous on Roman’s. I would say second to last shuttle runs, he looked like he was hurting pretty good after thinking it was the third

Taylor Self (05:47):

25 5.

Taylor Self (05:48):

Yeah. Burpee. Pullups. But I thought Roman was winning this start to finish when it was announced.

Sevan Matossian (05:54):

And, and so you didn’t think, do you think that he beat he beat? Do you think that was all Roman’s plan? Just stay behind him the whole time and know that at the very end I’m gonna just put run past him.

Taylor Self (06:04):

I think Roman, I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know how much, how cognitive he is of other athletes and what they’re doing on the floor. I think he was just like, I’m just gonna stay with this pace no matter how bad it hurts and I’m not gonna go any faster or any slower. And it’s pretty much what he did is Pat just slowed down a little bit at the end and that was this. Just that was it.

Sevan Matossian (06:25):

Uh, Michael c let’s get it already. Hiller. Don’t crap yourself. Are you guys here to watch Hiller do it? Hiller’s the sideshow.

Taylor Self (06:33):

What are you shooting for? Hiller

Andrew Hiller (06:36):

Is Jr. Here. JR isn’t here. I was telling he

Sevan Matossian (06:39):

Is here. Jr’s here. Jr’s here.

Andrew Hiller (06:40):

Oh, he hasn’t said shit yet. Uh, I was, I was going back and forth and I’m, whether it’d be a good idea to walk the shuttle runs and just keep a 1 28 pace the entire time on him and then slaughter the burpee pull ups.

Taylor Self (06:52):

That’s kind of what I did. <laugh>.

Andrew Hiller (06:54):

Is that right?

Taylor Self (06:55):

All right, I got 1 58.

Sevan Matossian (06:58):

Is that, is that a strategy right there? I didn’t even think of that. Is that a strategy?

Taylor Self (07:01):

No, I didn’t, I didn’t actually walk, but my last two shuttle runs, so after the set of 25, I was like shuffling so slow. And then when I finished the 30, I did like two really, really slow and then had like 10 seconds left and did like one fast,

Sevan Matossian (07:17):

Uh, Hiller 1 65 reps and a two 80 thruster. What were uh, what, what are the highest reps we’ve seen so far in leaderboard?

Andrew Hiller (07:24):

Did Roman get something like 1 68?

Taylor Self (07:26):

Yeah, you got 1 68 and pack out 1 62

JR Howell (07:29):

Roman Roman’s, Roman’s fastest to slowest shuttle split was 58 seconds and a minute 21. Hillary, I think you said you walked it test run at a minute. 28. That’s, uh, that’s pretty crazy.

Taylor Self (07:41):

But how, here’s the que how many of those rounds are 1 21 for Roman versus how many were 58 seconds?

Andrew Hiller (07:48):

Right? Right. It was just his last round. He averaged a one 11,

Sevan Matossian (07:51):

Uh, Jacqueline Robin Robertson from Canada always. Uh, big thank you Jacqueline. Hey, um, is, is there a faster time on the leaderboard at this point? Brian? Has anyone posted anything faster than, uh, Romans or, uh, more reps than Romans 1 68?

Brian Friend (08:07):

I don’t know.

Sevan Matossian (08:09):

Wanna check

JR Howell (08:10):

You check the private chat Evelyn.

Sevan Matossian (08:13):

Oh, uh, someone, uh, did someone say it in there or you just telling me I should look?

JR Howell (08:18):

Uh, no, it’s up now. We’re good.

Sevan Matossian (08:21):

If the average athlete in the announcement got 1 0 5 and two of the fittest dudes on the planet earth got 1 65, that means tens of thousands of men will occupy the 1 0 6 to 1 64 resulting in hundreds or thousands of ties. Why not have born Tiebreak go both ways? B is the tiebreak for A and A is the tiebreak for B.

Brian Friend (08:41):

Uh, let’s say it makes perfect that ma, I haven’t given much thought. That makes perfect sense to me and I am not sure why they don’t, didn’t think to do that.

Sevan Matossian (08:49):

Yeah, that’s, uh, who said that? Is that your idea?

Brian Friend (08:52):

Uh, it says Tim Paulson, he just tagged me on it and this happened like it was like a minute ago, so I sent it to Caleb.

Sevan Matossian (08:58):

Wow, I didn’t even think about that. What are they gonna do about that? About the tens of thousands of ties in between a hundred and, uh, M one 60.

JR Howell (09:06):

And I also wonder what the thought process is behind not making it reps plus load for

Brian Friend (09:12):

One score. Well, that’s, that’s the more, that’s the more broad question, um, that we definitely could talk about. But in the case that they chose to go in this direction, and I, you know, I was, we were obviously texting earlier and I had asked you guys like, what’s the tiebreak for the second part? Cuz obviously there’s gonna be a ton of ties on the weightlifting and then I, you know, I, I guess I didn’t think about it until Tim said this, but it just makes sense if you’re gonna choose the tiebreak of the first part for the second when there’re clearly two contrasting, you know, styles of workouts that you’re gonna favor different, different athletes, then why not make it just the inverse? Yeah. If that’s the dr if that’s the the route you’re gonna go,

Sevan Matossian (09:46):

Uh, Hillary, how close are you to being ready?

Taylor Self (09:48):

Do not jump up and jump back

Sevan Matossian (09:51):

That. Okay. I say, I say we let, um, Hiller go, let him rip and then come right back. Uh, while Hillary’s catching his breath. Uh, we talk about Andrew A. Little bit and then we talk about this, uh, tiebreak and scores and what we think, how this, we think this is going to, uh, play out.

JR Howell (10:06):

Taylor, if he’s walking 90 seconds between every set, he’s gonna be able to do that.

Taylor Self (10:10):

I don’t, I don’t know. I don’t think he’s gonna be walking. I don’t, I would not recommend jumping up and jumping back. I think a quick step up and step back is, I really do think that’s better, but

Sevan Matossian (10:22):

There’s no way Hiller thrusters too. There’s, you guys are crazy.

Taylor Self (10:26):

I bet Hiller gets heavy. I I I

Sevan Matossian (10:28):

Like to play. No. 1 22, 2 50. I’m going 1 20, 2 50, 1 20 reps.

Taylor Self (10:33):

Now I wouldn’t have been able to do a thrust after

Brian Friend (10:35):

On the reps.

Taylor Self (10:36):

Hillary, you should run until about the 20 to 25 burpee mark.

Taylor Self (10:41):

I think if you’re gonna walk, that’s when you do it. But I,

Taylor Self (10:43):

You walk on the big sets cuz you don’t wanna run and get back to a big set, like run in the short sets. Okay. It’s more, it’s more important. It’s about the runs cuz it’s gonna take longer than the burpees. So the runs are more important. So like after the 15 then you can think about walking.

Sevan Matossian (10:58):

God doesn’t, when Chase talks, the advice sounds so good just because the tone of his voice.

Taylor Self (11:02):

He’s like the Reese Davis of CrossFit. I just love listening to him. I

JR Howell (11:05):

Think so too. That’s a great

Taylor Self (11:06):

JR Howell (11:07):

Sevan Matossian (11:08):

I don’t know who that is, but I can’t, I don’t even listen to what he’s saying. I’m just like, yeah, it must be good. It must

Taylor Self (11:12):

Be good. I think step up and step back, dude. I really do.

Sevan Matossian (11:16):

All right. All right, Hillary, we’re ready when you are. Oh wait, let me get, let me get some guesses here. Uh, se Savon goes with a 120 reps, 250 pound thruster. That’s sev uh, Brian, what, what are you gonna guess for Hillary?

Brian Friend (11:27):

I’ll take the over on the reps and the under on the thruster.

Sevan Matossian (11:33):

Wow. Okay. So you’re not even gonna give us a number, but you’re just saying less than, less than <laugh>.

Brian Friend (11:38):

Uh, one 30 and two 40.

Sevan Matossian (11:40):

Oh one 30 and two 40. Okay. Uh, Brian, uh, Taylor self,

Taylor Self (11:45):

I think, I think between one, I think over one 50 on the shuttle. Wow. And then probably two 70, maybe UN

Sevan Matossian (11:56):

3 75. You’re outta your fucking mind.

Taylor Self (11:59):

Didn’t somebody say two 80? 80? Didn’t you say two 80? You midget?

Sevan Matossian (12:02):

Who me? Yeah. No, so I read that, I read that from someone’s, I read that from like crazy people like Audrey Fraser. She’s got two 80. Gimme a fucking break. <laugh>

Taylor Self (12:13):

Fucking old. 69. Four 20

Sevan Matossian (12:15):

<laugh>. He’s fucking old. How old are you, Hillary? He’s getting old. He’s in his thirties. 31.

Andrew Hiller (12:19):

Sevan Matossian (12:20):

What, uh, Hillary’s sprint and jump. He doesn’t want you to beat him. <laugh>. Oh, that’s,

Taylor Self (12:26):

That’s I want you to beat me. Did he beat the shit outta me last week? I’m pretty pissed about

Sevan Matossian (12:29):

That. Uh, chase Ingram, uh, please. Uh, with your wisdom

Taylor Self (12:35):

<laugh>. Uh, I would say 1 43 and 2 35. I

Andrew Hiller (12:42):

Gotta know where all these numbers put me cuz these don’t mean anything to me right now.

Sevan Matossian (12:45):

Good. Good, good, good. And Mr. Howell Jr. Nostradamus

JR Howell (12:51):

1 42. 2 62.

Taylor Self (12:53):

Yeah. <laugh>, I thought you’re gonna, uh, price is right me for both of them. <laugh>

Taylor Self (12:58):

Hill, if you get to 1 55, that’s finishing the 30 burpees. Okay. So 1 25 is finishing the shuttle after the 25 and then whatever you get from there into the 30 burpees or past it.

Sevan Matossian (13:12):

Uh, ladies and gentlemen, if you would like a free doctor’s consultation,

Taylor Self (13:15):

We’re gonna have to count for him. He doesn’t have a judge. He’s gonna lose. He’ll lose count.

Andrew Hiller (13:20):

I’ll not,

Taylor Self (13:21):

Dude. I don’t know. I would’ve for sure lost count on this motherfucker.

Sevan Matossian (13:26):

Uh, someone should keep count for him. Are you gonna do that? Suzu? Can you do that with a pen and paper? Thank you brother.

Taylor Self (13:32):

Uh, I have one as well.

Sevan Matossian (13:34):

Uh, just so you guys know, um, lucky cam straps two do 2 99 from Australia. Uh, Andrew Hiller has a show called Testosterone Tuesdays, uh, on his account. He takes you through his journey, uh, with California hormones. You too can partake in the California hormones. Uh, life you go to ca hormones.com put in the code word. I don’t know if it’s Hiller or Chevon or what it is, but one of those will work for you. You can get a free doctor’s appointment if you live in California and get free blood work. No free doctor’s appointment anywhere in the United States and then free blood work if you live in California.

Taylor Self (14:10):

What you gotta face the other way? Yeah.

JR Howell (14:12):

Oh wow. I think he’s just doing, I think he’s doing that so we can actually see his work in his pullups.

Taylor Self (14:16):

That’s good. Not only a fucking matter

Sevan Matossian (14:18):

<laugh>. He, Hillary has a nice back and a nice front Hillary. We’ll look at either side of you buddy. Whatever works for you. One,

Taylor Self (14:23):

I just love this gym setup.

Taylor Self (14:26):

It’s pretty fucking sweet.

Taylor Self (14:27):

I’m so jealous.

Sevan Matossian (14:29):

Two, hey, notice how he has the 25 foot side on the other side so we can’t actually see and make sure if that’s 25

Taylor Self (14:35):

Feet. Oh, we can see.

Taylor Self (14:36):

I just dig like the bowling kickout he has with his legs.

JR Howell (14:40):

You do?

Taylor Self (14:42):

Yeah. No, not really. I just think it’s cute or Yeah, he kicks that leg out. Like he’s just, you know, rolling one down the lane. <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (14:49):

Oh wait a

Taylor Self (14:50):

Second. Knock need. He’s a little, a little knock Need

Sevan Matossian (14:51):

<laugh>. Wait, how, how many shuttle runs? Is it

Taylor Self (14:54):

JR Howell (14:54):

10 every time

Taylor Self (14:55):

He, he’s on six. This is finishing six.

Sevan Matossian (14:59):

So that’s 25 feet each way right there,

JR Howell (15:02):

Correct? Yes.

Sevan Matossian (15:05):

God, that doesn’t look like seven feet. Both feet have to get on the other side of the line and one hand has to touch the ground. Yep.

JR Howell (15:15):

Yep. Three points of contact.

Sevan Matossian (15:19):

And this is for 15 minutes.

Taylor Self (15:21):

Yeah, this is the most boring fucking workout ever to watch. My, my boss Andy. He’s like, I’m not fucking watching this. It’s like watching paint dry <laugh>

JR Howell (15:31):

Taylor. What, um, what round did it really hit you?

Taylor Self (15:36):

Uh, I think the round of 25. I like, I got to 15 and I was like, I kept my burpees like the same speed the whole time. But at 15 in the round of 25, I was pretty fucked up and knew that like my shuttles were gonna slow way down and they did four.

Sevan Matossian (15:55):

And so there’s no rule on the setup for the pull-up bar except the fact that you can’t touch it. You can’t be able to touch it when you’re standing on the ground. Yeah. Okay.

Taylor Self (16:08):

Two more. I believe

JR Howell (16:11):

Bitching too, like, you know, you’re able to kip if you want 10, but how many people are gonna employ just a little, um, just a little knee tuck, just a little like bring the knees up. Taylor, did you ever start doing that or did you pretty much jump into a strict every

Taylor Self (16:26):

Time? On my last wrap of the 20, 25 and 30, I think I do that on the very last wrap, but when I’m in a rhythm, I, I typically don’t bring the knees up. I have a, I have a pretty good jump, like I can jump pretty well. Um, and then I have really good strict pullups, so, and I’ve just, I like burpee pullups a lot.

Sevan Matossian (16:43):

So you, do you not think he’s doing that efficient enough? JR right now I think the

Taylor Self (16:47):

Pullup bar’s probably kind of high.

JR Howell (16:49):

It, it looks, it looks kind of high for him.

Chase Ingraham (16:51):

It’s arms him

JR Howell (16:52):

Pull up

Brian Friend (16:54):

If he keeps doing five.

Sevan Matossian (16:55):

Uh, so what should he have done? Like stood on something like a thin mat, like a, a one inch mat, two inch mat?

Brian Friend (17:00):

Well, I think the, the rule said if you want to do that, you have to use a mat that your entire body can lay down on. That’s a uniform surface. So like a little riser wouldn’t work. Is that right?

JR Howell (17:11):

Yeah, like your whole body has to be on it for the burpee to count, which would mean if your line is also starting there, then you would have to almost do it. You’d have to do it behind. Yeah, like maybe a foot behind. Uh, it would, it seems weird. That means you would’ve to run on top of it every time you turn around on the shuttle

Brian Friend (17:28):

Run. Or you’d have to do your burpee at a 90 degree angle, like the pads here and the lines there. We

Taylor Self (17:34):

Set a, we set a long gymnastics pad up at our gym after I did it. And it, I mean, a two-inch surface was no issue for the, for the shuttle run.

Sevan Matossian (17:42):

So he’s doing 15. 15

Taylor Self (17:44):

Now. That’s his third. I love counting because I can’t read all the fucking dummies in the comments. I don’t get, I don’t get sucked into the shit talking.

JR Howell (17:55):

So like from a programming standpoint, we look at week one and we see, you know, what some people would call two, let’s just say like high skill movements, like people that are maybe on the border trying to make it in a quarter of hurdles. And then here we have a new movement, right? We have a burpee pull up at least new to the open, new to CrossFit competition programmed by the CrossFit games team. Like I know they’ve done it at, at Rogue before, but where, where do you see some of the movements that now we’re used to seeing in the open? Do you, do you, do you think of those things like, oh wow, maybe this year we’re not doing Chester debar and we’ll do ’em in quarters or in or in semis instead where usually we see movements like Chester Debar, toast Debar always in the open

Taylor Self (18:38):

Brian Friend (18:38):

I love that. I mean, I think, uh, I think there are a lot of elements we we’re starting to see from Adrian even through just, uh, two weeks. Obviously there’s one to go where he’s, you know, I think getting back to something that was missing, which is, uh, some fun and unpredictable elements of the open. I think the last two years were a little bit stale relative to some of the previous, um, especially like the middle teen 18 years, you know, 15, 16, 17, 18. And uh, he’s kind of reopening this idea that, you know, yes, uh, there still is this stage of quarter finals, but we haven’t replaced the open with that. And the open becomes something different. It’s again, more wide open where we don’t necessarily know what’s coming. There’s a, you know, a lot of things that you have to be prepared for. I think that the workouts are, have been clever so far to the fact that, you know, everyone can do these things or can at least start these things, but you still are, you know, this is still gonna get a, a good separation between who’s fit and who’s, you know, able to do these things but not do ’em that fast or that well.

Sevan Matossian (19:38):

Well lucky camera straps 2 99 from Australia. Again, wad, zombie always. Uh, maybe the best supporter of the show. Uh, Hillary needs to get on that Phil tune tanning protocol. Uh, wad Zombie. Phil Tunes a black guy. Um, and he

Taylor Self (19:52):

Looks like Robert Downey Juer and Tropic Thunder.

Sevan Matossian (19:56):

<laugh> Is this, is this, is this a real name? Luis Le. You like that Su Luis Lemos? Is that a real name? Luis Lemos.

Taylor Self (20:04):

One more error.

Sevan Matossian (20:05):

This guy’s always dropping the

Brian Friend (20:06):

Bucks. It is.

Sevan Matossian (20:07):

Yeah. This guy’s always dropping, uh, the big Bitcoin. Um, let’s see,

Taylor Self (20:16):

How, what time is that? Six something? Yeah, six 20.

Sevan Matossian (20:19):

Uh, Dick butter, they caught Taylor wearing clothes from the luggage cheese stole <laugh>.

Brian Friend (20:24):

Taylor, I, I, uh, you know, I reposted your four tips for this workout, which I think are excellent tips. At what point would you say to someone, um, that doing this jumping strict pull up as opposed to maybe starting from Kip in the beginning would be like the breaking point?

Taylor Self (20:41):

Uh, can you explain that? Can, can you, yeah,

Brian Friend (20:43):

Like obviously if you can do the jump into the strict pull up instead of having to kip every time, that’s great. But if you’re, you know, if you’re working with just a general population, you’re a affiliated and you’re like, well I know this person like can probably only get 10 pullups that way before they’re gonna have to kip, would you say they should just kip from the start?

Taylor Self (20:59):

Absolutely. I, I think, I think if you, at any point, unless you are getting deep into the round of like 25, I think if you at any point are getting like a quarter of the way up and finishing it out with a strict pull up like Hillary’s doing now, I mean obviously he’s upper body dense and strong as fuck, so he is gonna be fine. But once the a, you know, the average CrossFitter starts doing that. I think you just go to a kit. I believe that’s 14.

Sevan Matossian (21:24):

Is he at 25? Is he at 25?

Taylor Self (21:26):

No, this is 20. No, this is

JR Howell (21:27):

Sevan Matossian (21:28):

What did you say, chase? You start with the,

Taylor Self (21:29):

It’s like for my, for my burpee pullups, like I tip every one of them, but I, I jump up and high enough to grab onto the bar in a hollowed poi or the, um, opposite of a hollow PO or no, I grab a hollow position. So like my transfer is very quick, so I’m using my hips like right from the start and trying to save my

Taylor Self (21:48):

Arms one more.

Taylor Self (21:50):

Almost the opposite of what Andrew’s doing. Hey, now looks like

Sevan Matossian (21:53):

He would manage

Taylor Self (21:54):

The just switched. Did you

JR Howell (21:55):

Last one? Yeah, he just switched. Really?

Sevan Matossian (21:57):

He switched? What? What’d he do? He started skipping. Yeah,

Taylor Self (22:00):

He kept on his last one.

Sevan Matossian (22:02):

Uh, Trish Taylor looks like he would manage the fuck out of an AutoZone. I did

Taylor Self (22:07):

Work at a motorcycle

Sevan Matossian (22:07):

Shop. Yeah, fish fucked you up.

JR Howell (22:11):

So finishing the round of 20 burpees ride at eight.

Sevan Matossian (22:15):

Oh my goodness.

Taylor Self (22:17):

This is when it starts

Taylor Self (22:18):

Sevan Matossian (22:19):

You you sold motorcycles. Taylor, you worked at a motorcycle shop?

Taylor Self (22:22):

I didn’t sell ’em, I worked on ’em. Oh, I also wrecked one. We had a customer buy a brand new bike and I wrecked it in the parking lot.

Taylor Self (22:31):

So it’s 50 total burpee pullups at this point, right? Eight minutes.

Sevan Matossian (22:38):

That’s, that’s that’s where the score comes

Taylor Self (22:40):

From. Five coming if he wants to get to the 30.

Taylor Self (22:42):

Come on Hiller.

Sevan Matossian (22:43):

Is that how you get the points, the point the number is the number of, uh, burpee pullups you?

Taylor Self (22:47):

No, no, it’s, you still get a point per shuttle run. But I’m just thinking quick transition volume of burpees in a time at which it took him to get to the spot. So he is done 55 or he is done 50 with the shuttle runs.

Sevan Matossian (22:59):

Hey, he’s moving way better than I thought at nine minutes. I thought he’d be already like, yeah,

Taylor Self (23:02):

The rock runs

Taylor Self (23:03):

Good transition. Smooth transition. Turn and go.

JR Howell (23:10):

Chase. When you see a movement like this early in the season, do you start to think about possible progressions through the season? Like do you think, uh, we’ve done burpee ring muscle ups twice in competition, once in the chipper and then once at regionals 30 for time. Do you see something like this turning into burpee muscle up bar, muscle up and then maybe do becoming like burpee pullover type thing at the game? Yeah,

Taylor Self (23:34):

Uh, pullover. I mean if we have a double crossover then a bar pullovers on the table for sure, I think. But not till the CrossFit games. And it might be that opposite trickle down. We talked about this the day is that we’ll see things at the games and then at regionals or semi-finals the next year and then at open the year after that. This could be the trickle up effect where here’s a little precursor in the open. We may see a burpee muscle up in quarter finals or semi-finals. It’d be cool to seeing semi-finals

JR Howell (24:01):

Because now that they have the standard they can do perpe chest bar, they can do perpe bar muscle up, they can do whatever.

Taylor Self (24:07):

I don’t, I don’t like the, the pullover.

Taylor Self (24:11):

Well I I was alluding it to like, if they’re gonna do the double crossover. No, for

Taylor Self (24:15):

Sure. I think your rationale is spot on. I just am not, I’m not a, you know,

Sevan Matossian (24:25):

I believe that’s, Hey, how would you, if, if they did the burpee pullover, how would someone get down from there? You would lower yourself into, from a negative arm muscle up or you’d do a forward roll out of it?

Chase Ingraham (24:36):

JR Howell (24:36):

I think it would just come back down. It’s like a like muscle up. Yeah.

Taylor Self (24:40):

Believe this is 15.

Sevan Matossian (24:46):

Oh yeah. Sitting now. I would love, I would love to see how they would do that. You’re saying that you, you could see them doing uh, pullovers pullovers when you’re hanging bar you throw your feet up and then you get on top of the bar like a little girl at the park, right?

Taylor Self (24:58):

They did pullovers in the Pendleton obstacle course.

Taylor Self (25:02):

Sevan Matossian (25:03):

How many was it? Just one.

Taylor Self (25:04):

Just the opener. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (25:06):

Right. Okay.

Taylor Self (25:07):

Gotta jump Hiller. Jump more. Jump

Taylor Self (25:11):

Jump less. Kip <laugh>.

Taylor Self (25:14):

There you go. Yeah, he can hear us. I can hear him breathing. He can definitely hear us Four more.

Taylor Self (25:18):

Catch straight arms and kip the shit out of it, bro.

Taylor Self (25:22):

I don’t know. I think, I don’t know. I

Taylor Self (25:26):

I mean’s slow down. He’s doing it.

Taylor Self (25:29):

You can’t see. I think it’s 11. One more last wrap. Let’s go

JR Howell (25:35):

Brian with your members

Taylor Self (25:37):

Tomorrow. God bro, walk

Taylor Self (25:39):

Quick. Turnarounds slow on the run. Turn quick. Yeah,

Taylor Self (25:46):

He’s 30 is gonna be like the whole workout.

Taylor Self (25:50):

Taylor Self (25:51):

Taylor Self (25:52):

He just finished his second shuttle run after the round of 25 burpees.

Taylor Self (26:00):

So what number is that on? We shouldn’t have had a score sheet up.

Taylor Self (26:04):

I believe that’s he’s on after he finishes this. I’ll be at 1 25.

Taylor Self (26:08):

Okay. What’s

Taylor Self (26:09):

The time at 12? 1215?

Taylor Self (26:13):

I need to do 18 Herby Pullups. Come on bro. To get to your number. Exactly. <laugh>. Yeah. Yeah.

JR Howell (26:20):

Brian, how

Sevan Matossian (26:21):

Long after Nice of you to, uh, join us Dave for the last two and a half minutes of, um, of Hillary’s workout. Do you have any advice for him?

Taylor Self (26:29):

You know that,

Dave (26:30):

Is he walking by

Taylor Self (26:32):

<laugh>? No. Come on.

Sevan Matossian (26:34):

What happened? You didn’t pay your electricity bill.

Dave (26:36):

I’m driving in a car. I’m in North Carolina just visiting with a bunch of affiliates now heading over to uh, just some hub where someone’s having a retired retirement ceremony. So hey, put a light

Taylor Self (26:49):

You come across with Charlotte.

Dave (26:51):

Hold on. Does that work better? There we go. I’m good.

Sevan Matossian (26:53):

No, I got it. Oh, fantastic. Uh, Taylor has a question for you Dave.

Taylor Self (26:56):

Are you coming across with Charlotte? You gonna see Andy?

Dave (26:59):

No, I’m not in Charlotte. I’m actually in, uh, Southern Pines right now. Oh, okay. Yeah. So, um, are we live, is this like, or is this just a

Sevan Matossian (27:08):

No no, no one can see us. Well like 1500 people can see us, but not just hair under 1500

Dave (27:14):

For it. You don’t have shit for engagement. That’s it.

Sevan Matossian (27:17):

Hell are you killing it buddy? You’re killing it. Uh, push hard

Taylor Self (27:21):

18 Hillary

Sevan Matossian (27:23):

Push hard. Uh, Dave Castro is watching and judging the shit outta you. Push hard buddy.

Taylor Self (27:28):

90 seconds. I’m

Dave (27:30):

Actually not watching. I’m driving <laugh>. Um, what’s, uh, what’s the word? What are you guys up to? Who’s on the show? I can’t tell. I’m not

Sevan Matossian (27:39):

Looking at that. Oh, we’re watching. We’re watching Andrew Hiller. Do the last minute in 10 seconds of the, uh, 23.2 before he gets to the thruster. What do you think, Dave? What do you think his max thruster is

Dave (27:53):

Gonna be? Okay. Can you answer my question though? Can you answer my question? Who’s on the no,

Sevan Matossian (27:58):

Michelle, who’s what? Oh, uh, Taylor Self, Brian friend Chase, Ingram, Jer Howell and uh, and myself and Andrew Hillary. We’re watching Andrew Hillary do the workout.

Dave (28:08):

Fuck. Where, where am I going?

Sevan Matossian (28:11):

And we just made, uh, $15. Uh, because you’re on the show. Let’s go Hillary, push our Any idea where he is at?

Taylor Self (28:17):

13. 13. Deep into the round of 30. You got 30 seconds. Gotta go. I’m

Dave (28:24):

That what your question was.

Sevan Matossian (28:25):

No, no. We’re watching Hillary. You’re supposed to be cheering Hiller on. You’re supposed to be the, the motivation he needs for the last minute of his, uh, workout.

Dave (28:33):

Any, I

Taylor Self (28:36):

That’s 17, 15 seconds. Go.

Brian Friend (28:40):

That’s pretty good, man.

Taylor Self (28:43):

Come on.

Sevan Matossian (28:44):

10 seconds left.

Taylor Self (28:46):

19. You got 10 seconds. Let’s go, let’s go jump up. Come on. 42. The go <laugh>. One more. One more, one more, more. He got 20 deep into around 30. Nice.

Brian Friend (28:57):

What’s the rep count Taylor?

Taylor Self (28:59):

1 42. Wait, wait, wait. Uh, 1 45.

Sevan Matossian (29:03):

He doesn’t even get to enjoy this, right? It’s just straight to the thruster. The clock’s already started.

JR Howell (29:08):

Brian, how long Brian, how long after the 15 minutes hits do you tell your members tomorrow they have to get a lift in?

Brian Friend (29:15):

Uh, I think it completely depends on their capacity and the weight that they’re gonna be opening with. I mean, I think some of them will, will be ready within a minute, but, uh, the ones that really go deep on this, I’ll probably tell ’em to take two before they even touch the barbell

JR Howell (29:31):

Tey. What about you? What will you tell your competitive people?

Taylor Self (29:34):

I recommended 45 seconds. Wow. To get a one, like a 1 35 as a guy or a 95 as a lady he’s hitting. So kinda like what he’s doing. Yeah, he’s going a little heavier. I don’t five I don’t think it’s necessary to go that. Wow. Easy day. Yeah. I think you get an easy one outta the way and then maybe four more attempts. So five total or four total. I think it’s more than enough. Shit. He’s gonna hit my number and not this thing.
