#653 – Rogue Invitational Day 2 Recap

Taylor Self (00:00):

It’s me.

Sevan Matossian (00:01):

<laugh>. How dare you. How dare you.

Andrew Hiller (00:05):

Sevan Matossian (00:06):

Uh, bam. We’re live. Uh, can somebody mute Gabriela? Wow. Wow. Holding down first place, Huh?

Andrew Hiller (00:20):

Is she at first right now? Has that updated yet?

Sevan Matossian (00:25):

Um, yeah, I saw it right as I came to the show

Andrew Hiller (00:31):

In first. You right?

Sevan Matossian (00:32):

Yo, I plugged, I plugged in my heater.

Andrew Hiller (00:35):

Yeah, I turned, I just turned mine up.

Sevan Matossian (00:37):

Andrew Hiller (00:39):

It got cold again.

Sevan Matossian (00:40):

Day too Done. Taylor Self from SMTP programming, Uh, j Howell from CrossFit Crash and the host of the Crash Crucible Hiller from Hiller Fit Matt Suza in the back, bringing up the pretty pictures. Uh, Brian Friend hopefully will be joining us shortly, and I have sent a link to Miss Katie Ma, the owner of Rogue and probably one of the suc most successful business women on planet Earth. And that Jeff Beko is not an exaggeration. You bag.

Andrew Hiller (01:27):

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Sevan Matossian (01:28):

Andrew Hiller (01:29):

Careful with Jeff. All right. He’s got delicate feelings.

Sevan Matossian (01:32):

All right. Fine. Fine. Uh, are we surprised to see, uh, can we go straight to the leaderboard? Are we surprised? Look at this. Gabriela in first. Jeff Baker. Wow. Wow. <laugh>. Wow. I was just summoning you buddy. I just said douche. And you

Andrew Hiller (01:48):

See, you made him, you made

Sevan Matossian (01:49):

Him cry. You just came out. Um, I’ll always have a crush on Katie. What are you talking about? Does he still, um, uh, Gabriel Alwa in, uh, first place, Laura Hvat in second place. Emma Lawson in third. Annie TH’s, daughter in fourth. Amanda Barnhart and fifth Ellie Turner in sixth in Seventh Place. Danielle Brandon, Eighth place, Ariel Low and ninth Place Cars. Saunders and 10th Place, Matilda Gars. Um, uh, if Brian were here, he would say, it’s no surprise who’s at the top. Absolutely no. Uh, surprise. Taylor, Uh, your thoughts?

Taylor Self (02:26):

Can you hear me okay?

Sevan Matossian (02:28):

Oh, better than, Okay. Okay.

Taylor Self (02:30):

I don’t think there’s any surprise. I’m not surprised that Gabby in the top spot. I’m a little surprised Laura’s in second with a 14th place. Um, I think more than anything, I’m interested to see where she’s gonna be at after snatch and press. I think that’s event eight or nine.

Sevan Matossian (02:49):

Uh, and, and, and Emma Lawson, What happened? Shit got heavy.

Taylor Self (02:54):

Uh, no,

Sevan Matossian (02:55):

11th and the ninth,

Taylor Self (02:56):

I think we’re four events into a 10 event weekend.

Sevan Matossian (03:00):

Okay. Uh, Annie Thor’s daughter taking a fifth on the, uh, dt. Um, do the old time CrossFitters do better with, uh, bar cycling? Is, is grip strength in that, in that type of kind of old school CrossFit workout? Uh, more

Andrew Hiller (03:20):

Did you say grip strength?

Sevan Matossian (03:21):

Yeah. Uh, is that, does grip strength, is that something that takes time a a long time to build? And are these old school CrossFit workouts more fitting for the old school CrossFitters? Uh, Mr. Howell?

JR Howell (03:35):

Uh, I would say grip strength alone is kind of one of those things you have or you don’t. I mean, there are a lot of people that are just born with really, really good grip endurance, and some people struggle with it from the first time they walk into a gym, and it takes a long time for them to develop it at all. I think as far as barbell cycling goes, especially workouts like dt, I think it’s something that all these athletes have done tons of time. So I don’t know if on this workout specifically, it really benefits the more old school athletes.

Sevan Matossian (04:05):

Uh, uh, Ellie’s pacing, uh, tremendous is that, uh, something she’s learning from Justin Maderas and Adam Neer over there at CrossFit Fort Vancouver. That was, that was an incredible, uh, last minute push.

Taylor Self (04:18):

I don’t think she wins the workout if they call the no rep that she should have been called for.

Sevan Matossian (04:22):

Ooh. Uh, Taylor taking, um, uh, Andrew Hiller’s spot

Andrew Hiller (04:28):

On that last hang power clean or that first hand power or the last one into the jerks?

Taylor Self (04:34):

No, it was the first one.

JR Howell (04:35):

First first

Taylor Self (04:36):

One. Yeah. I, I just, she was a few seconds ahead of Annie, which that rep definitely didn’t take a few seconds, but I think if she gets no rep there, she probably drops the bar. Uh, or maybe she doesn’t, I mean, who knows? Who knows? Maybe she drops the bar. Maybe she doesn’t. Um, either way she should have been no rep there. I also saw Leus rap this in the second heat do no hang cleans to standard.

Sevan Matossian (05:01):

Andrew Hiller (05:02):

I saw Annie Thes daughter’s entire first round of deadlifts look like a garbage fire.

Sevan Matossian (05:07):

Oh my goodness. Okay. Wait, before we get to Annie’s deadlifts talking, what was wrong with Alexis rap’s? Uh, hand cleans.

Taylor Self (05:14):

It was just the final round I noticed, but her elbows didn’t come through on any of them.

Sevan Matossian (05:18):

Show me, show me what that means. Show me what you’re talking about.

Taylor Self (05:22):

So like, if you’re in the front rack position here. Yeah. And the bar’s on my shoulder for the rep to be finished, your elbow has to be in front of the bar, or at least in this position. And she was like here. So she was cleaning the bar to here, just touching her collarbone and coming back down instead of getting the elbow all the way through.

Sevan Matossian (05:37):

So it’s not the height of the bar that calls the rep, it’s your actually elbows have to like, your, your tricep has to break sort of some parallel line,

Taylor Self (05:44):

You’re saying? No, your elbow has to be in front of the bar. Your elbow has to pass in front of the bar. Oh, okay. And cars were back down here? Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (05:51):

Okay. Okay. Uh, true. Is that true, JR?

JR Howell (05:56):

Yeah, that’s true. Yeah. I’ve never actually heard of a height on your front rack that you have to achieve before the rep counts. And you’ll see some people have it below the collarbone, you’ll have some people catch on the collarbone. So yeah, it’s really more of hips and knees fully extended with elbows slightly in front of the bar.

Sevan Matossian (06:17):

Alrighty. Uh, and, and what was wrong with, uh, Annie’s, uh, deadlift? And are you sure it’s not a camera angle? Hiller,

Andrew Hiller (06:24):

I’m sure it’s all she is doing what a lot of people are doing. So everyone was all pissed off about everyone’s deadlift. So they, they’re in this position where they round and they kinda hold like a sleigh rounded position and the head is looking at the floor, so it makes it look like they’re not standing all the way up. But it doesn’t appear as if that was The issue with Annie is that she was going really quick cuz the bar’s really light. It got her out ahead in the early rounds, but once she slowed down a bit, the reps cleaned up a little bit. Her technique wasn’t quite there, but I guess that doesn’t really matter. I don’t really give a shit about technique. I’d give a shit about getting all the way up.

Sevan Matossian (06:59):

Uh, I saw, I personally saw people calling her out on her reps and I was staring at her and I didn’t see it. I ob I missed the first round. Did anyone else see bad reps besides Chiller for Annie?

Taylor Self (07:11):

She was Rodney the line

Sevan Matossian (07:12):

A little bit. Uh, Andrew Hiller looks like a juiced up. Walter

Andrew Hiller (07:19):

<laugh>, I

Sevan Matossian (07:19):

From the Big Lebowski. I bet you Hiller hasn’t even seen the Big Lebowski. He doesn’t watch. I have. That’s

Andrew Hiller (07:24):

Movie’s. Stoner The Stoner dude.

Sevan Matossian (07:27):

Yeah. Uh, he, he’s John Candy’s character, I think.

Andrew Hiller (07:31):

Oh, okay. I look like him.

Sevan Matossian (07:33):

Uh, Tommy Marque. I would rather have Hiller’s Ecks. Would you rather have Hiller’s pecks or specs?

Andrew Hiller (07:41):

Oh yeah.

Sevan Matossian (07:41):

They’re growing. It’s a fantastic question. Um, you should start your own, uh, podcast, uh, Travis from Vindicate. Annie’s first round looked bad, but terrible. Camera angle. Uh, Jamie LaMer, Uh, just like Karon, uh, Annie always rides the line. Okay, here we go.

Taylor Self (08:00):

Round. We’re talking about, Are we talking? This

Andrew Hiller (08:02):

Is not, this is not the first round. This is not the first round.

Sevan Matossian (08:05):

Yeah, we’re talking about Annie’s, uh, dead lifts. Good. Go ahead Mr. Friend. Chime in.

Taylor Self (08:09):

No, I would just say the deadlifts were very similar across the board from the athletes. I didn’t think that there was anything too suspicious going on, and I actually thought, Annie, the rest of Annie’s reps were very clean

Andrew Hiller (08:21):

After the first round

Taylor Self (08:22):

After Well, I’m talking about the cleans in the shoulder overhead. Dave, you’re, I don’t think there’s any room to scrutinize the deadlifts in this work. There were a lot of athletes that you could’ve that was really close for,

Sevan Matossian (08:32):

Uh, Bailey Deme, Uh, Brian, the five minute friend. Every girl wish she had. Oh, that’s nice. Okay. Uh, I am hop talk about no reps. The strong man. Dumb press had some br the strong man was crazy. Oh, the strong man was crazy. Thank you. I am hop. Um,

JR Howell (08:54):

If we go back to the female leaderboard for a second,

Sevan Matossian (08:57):

JR Howell (08:59):

One thing to keep an eye on, if you look at the top, I think even the top seven, and then after that, if you look, there’s one thing in common that everyone has except for Annie so far through four events, and that’s no event outside of the top 10 for Annie only. So just to keep an eye on that as Annie may continue to climb. I think she was in like eighth or ninth, maybe before this one or when we went into today. So that’s just something to keep an eye on. I think you’re way more likely to see finishers on the podium that all have maybe one finish outside the top 10 versus the males.

Sevan Matossian (09:34):

I I think you said that backwards Jr. I, um, what you’re saying is they all have finishes outside the top 10 except for Annie. Except for Annie. Okay. Yeah. Fantastic. Okay. And you’re saying that the good money is on the person who’s consistent, not the person who’s all over the board

JR Howell (09:49):

In this field for the podium, absolutely, but I think maybe even for the winner.

Sevan Matossian (09:54):

Okay, fantastic.

Taylor Self (09:55):

Especially notable given the conversation we had at the end of the last show, which is that three of these workouts have not been, you know, the traditional couple of triple chipper style CrossFit workouts. They’ve been like specific tests of running, of lifting of gymnastics, and she’s still able to hang in the top half of all those things.

Sevan Matossian (10:13):

Well said. Uh, Brian, uh, Gabrielle Maa and Laura Hvat at the top. Uh, you are an expert in all things CrossFit, but you are, uh, maybe like level 15 out of 10 when it comes to Gabrielle and Laura hva. Uh, what are you thinking right now when you see them up there?

Taylor Self (10:30):

You mean in this workout particularly?

Sevan Matossian (10:32):

No, just in general. After four workouts, they’re one and two there.

Taylor Self (10:36):

Oh. I mean, you know, I think most people have had them in podium spots in the pre competition predictions for the end of the weekend. Uh, so nothing surprised. Most.

Sevan Matossian (10:47):

Yeah. But the, but the pre competition shows have been horrible.

Taylor Self (10:53):

Uh oh, I’m sorry.

Andrew Hiller (10:56):

<laugh> wouldn’t, wouldn’t you guys fall into all one of those? Weren’t you guys? The pre-com competition shows?

Taylor Self (11:00):

Sevan Matossian (11:01):

We definitely, we definitely fall into that one. That was the, that was the, uh, exception. Got it. Got it. Um, Tim Paulson sprinted the end on the bike. Um, Sean called it, he called him Tim Pauls end Get it. Tim Pauls end once again. Yeah,

Andrew Hiller (11:17):

Sevan Matossian (11:17):

Like that. I fucking loved it. I fucking loved it. Brilliant.

Andrew Hiller (11:21):

You think he, you think he came up that with beforehand

Sevan Matossian (11:22):

He had to have No, no. I think he, that’s on the fly.

Taylor Self (11:25):

Have you guys not seen the shirts that they made about that?

Sevan Matossian (11:28):

Oh really?

Taylor Self (11:29):

Yeah, this has been around for a while. There’s, there’s full, full pulse and shirts that were being available for sale like three weeks ago.

Sevan Matossian (11:36):

Oh, okay. Okay.

Taylor Self (11:39):

Do you guys even pay attention to the cross media space?

Sevan Matossian (11:41):

We try not to. We try

Andrew Hiller (11:43):

Not. Brian, you look like you belong in an episode at Dexter

Sevan Matossian (11:46):

<laugh>. Uh, um, Janowski got his start, his career began under the tutelage of one Nico Salo. Is that what we saw today? Did we see a, a Janowski who’s an og, CrossFitter shitloads of Roots, spent a ton of time under the barbell. Did you guys expect him to do so? Well, JR

JR Howell (12:13):

Yeah. I actually remember seeing a video. This is, some of the guys probably have

Taylor Self (12:17):

Seen it. Where’s this, where’s this overall finish on the workout? Third, third,

Sevan Matossian (12:25):

Third. I hiller’s saying third. I don’t know. Can you organize him by, uh, by, um, uh, event for Thank you Su third place. Sooki third is correct? Yeah. One, one second. Ahead of the or? Carl Goodmanson. Okay. Jr Oh, standby. Standby. Katie.

Caity Henniger (12:48):

What’s up? Going

Sevan Matossian (12:49):

On? Thanks for your time.

Caity Henniger (12:51):

Oh, how much time tonight? So we gotta be quick.

Sevan Matossian (12:53):

Yeah. Were you, have you, were you out in the sun all day?

Caity Henniger (12:56):

Yes. No, there was no sun here.

Sevan Matossian (12:58):

There was no sun,

Caity Henniger (12:59):

No. It rained all

Sevan Matossian (13:00):

Day. That’s just temperature change or you’ve been eating a lot of carrots?

Caity Henniger (13:03):

Uh, temperature change.

Sevan Matossian (13:04):

All right. Good to have you on the show. Um, uh, Katie, let’s start with the hardest question first. Why no live media or why not take, um, me to the ranch to so I can Instagram live from there?

Caity Henniger (13:18):

Uh, there’s a lot of reasons to that, but we knew we wanted to do a post edit, so, uh, at least we were able to capture that and get it out today.

Sevan Matossian (13:26):

Okay. And, um, was any of it to maintain your privacy since it’s your own, uh, personal facility? Absolutely. Okay. Fair, fair, fair enough. Uh, the programming, um, how collaborative was it between you and, uh, Spieler and Josh? Uh,

Caity Henniger (13:44):

Well, I think it’s always very collaborative. I mean, we have a great time. We do it before Crazy ideas. And I think what you’re seeing this weekend is, uh, some of the best stuff that, that we’ve been able to come up with. But these athletes are just knocking it out of the park,

Sevan Matossian (13:59):

Uh, at, at the, there’s a lot of speculation about the bag, uh, the bag weight, uh, during event one that it was a hundred pounds. What was the point of that to

Caity Henniger (14:08):

Make, to make it annoying? We really just wanted to take, take it out of their ru uh, take ’em out of the flow of the run. So just get it up and over and, and then they can get outta there.

Sevan Matossian (14:18):

So, so there’s no truth that it was somehow determined by the ruck guys and they’re not as strong as CrossFitters?

Caity Henniger (14:23):

Absolutely not.

Sevan Matossian (14:25):

Okay. Uh, have there been any last minute changes to any of the, uh, workouts?

Caity Henniger (14:31):

No. We’re all settled.

Sevan Matossian (14:33):

Alrighty. Um, the, the log event, uh, that we haven’t seen yet, can you tell us who tested that on the men and the women’s side?

Caity Henniger (14:42):

Uh, we had a couple people test it. Uh, Christie AMO tested the female weight and then, uh, Dan, Dan Bailey tested for the men, uh, for us. Um, but we think we settled, uh, where, where we wanna be and, uh, hopefully it’s gonna be better tomorrow night under the lights.

Sevan Matossian (14:58):

Uh, can you tell us the format of that?

Caity Henniger (15:01):

Sevan Matossian (15:02):

Understood. Understood. <laugh>, uh, the, the, um, the, the back squat from the rack, when you and Spieler and, uh, Josh, was that debated, uh, to, uh, like how that was gonna start? Would they be able to get it back up there? Did you guys debate what the rules were gonna be about that?

Caity Henniger (15:21):

I mean, if they dropped it,

Sevan Matossian (15:22):

Caity Henniger (15:24):

We didn’t really debate it. I mean, it just had to work that way throughout for the flow of the competition. Um, but I can say that they, the times put up were, they just crushed it. I mean, that was awesome. I mean, the only debate we had was on the weight rep scheme was pretty settled and, and the weights, uh, were heavy, but they, they killed it. Nick Matthew knocked it outta the park.

Sevan Matossian (15:45):

Absolutely. Did anyone want to go heavier? That’s

Caity Henniger (15:49):

What I was gonna ask. No, no, we didn’t wanna go heavier. We, we, we were wondering if that was too heavy, but it, it obviously was not.

Sevan Matossian (15:57):

Do you, for the, for the Muscle Up event, um, do you wish in hindsight that you would’ve made the time cap a little longer so we could have got a finisher?

Caity Henniger (16:07):

Uh, I could probably go either way on that, but I’m happy with where we settled and I think, uh, you know, it being a new event, it’s something that, uh, we could bring back in, in a different way. And it again,

Sevan Matossian (16:20):

Uh, we, we heard a rumor that it was Tia Tomi who tested it, and that’s why it was so short

Caity Henniger (16:24):

<laugh>, it was not Tia.

Sevan Matossian (16:27):

Okay. Um, will there be a minimum work requirement on any of the workouts this year?

Caity Henniger (16:37):

T B D.

Sevan Matossian (16:38):

Okay. For

Caity Henniger (16:39):

You? Not for the athletes.

Sevan Matossian (16:41):

Oh, right, okay. And so this is, this is, this is how we came up with this question. Um, uh, and, and in a previous year, Laura Hvat was, uh, disqualified for not being able to do a handstand pushup, and yet we had someone who wasn’t able to do one back squat. Um, and, and they, and they were allowed to continue.

Caity Henniger (16:59):

Yes. Correct.

Sevan Matossian (17:01):

Fair. Okay. Um, do we know what’s going on with, uh, Bailey? Rogers? She looked great in dt. Do we know why she didn’t, uh, do any back squats?

Caity Henniger (17:09):

I, I don’t, do not, I haven’t had a chance to catch up with the athletes tonight.

Sevan Matossian (17:13):

Okay. Uh, the warmup area. What’s the warmup area look like for the athletes? Um, cuz we saw ’em until the barns go out there and take some weights off and do a couple warmup reps, actually during the workout,

Caity Henniger (17:25):

I mean the, the warmup, are you asking if the warmup area had squat stands in it and barbells? Yes. The answer is yes.

Sevan Matossian (17:32):

And what and how much, um, and how long did they, before they finished warming up to them going out there?

Caity Henniger (17:40):

Um, less than 10 minutes. I think I, it was, it was enough time to be able to stay warm before they ran down there. I’m, I’m not sure why she did it.

Sevan Matossian (17:48):

Okay. That was was gonna be my next question. What the fuck is wrong with Matilda Barnes? Okay.

Caity Henniger (17:52):

Uh, let’s not go that far. Come on now.

Sevan Matossian (17:54):

Okay. Okay. Okay. Uh, um, um, uh, Mr. Taylor self, I present to you, <laugh>, the owner, the co-owner of Rogue Fitness. Katie Mo, please. Your question.

Taylor Self (18:06):

Oh, I was just gonna ask about the programming. When you guys are coming up with that stuff with Josh and Chris, you mentioned it being collaborative. Is there a lot of negative feedback? Like do you throw an idea out there that gets shot down frequently or vice versa from them?

Caity Henniger (18:19):

I think everyone gets ideas shot down and that’s why we, you know, it ends up being the best of what’s being out there, you know, what’s grouped together. Um, typically Bill will have some off the wall idea that sometimes sticks and sometimes doesn’t. Um, but I think, you know, Chris and Chris and Josh do a great job of really being pointed with, with the direction they wanna go and, and you know, we nitpick it a bit, but we’re really happy with where we ended up this year.

Taylor Self (18:46):

Me too. I love it. And I think that was kind of where I was going. I appreciate that you guys have that kind of feedback loop.

Caity Henniger (18:52):

Sevan Matossian (18:53):

Mr. Andrew Hiller. One

Caity Henniger (18:54):

More. Oh,

Sevan Matossian (18:54):

I got one more. Okay. Okay. Mr. Hiller,

Andrew Hiller (18:57):

When will the bar muscle up logs be available for sale on the Rope Fitness website? <laugh>,

Caity Henniger (19:03):

I don’t know. We wanted to do this one for a few years, uh, multiple years actually, and, uh, just couldn’t pull it off, but I think the feedback was good on it, so we’ll see. Maybe they’ll make the website.

Sevan Matossian (19:13):

Katie, thank you for everything. You’re fucking amazing. I can’t believe you’re doing this for us. We love you to death.

Caity Henniger (19:18):

Welcome. See you guys tomorrow.

Sevan Matossian (19:20):

Peace. Katie Heer everyone. Co-owner of probably one.

Andrew Hiller (19:26):

Brian Jr. She’s great. That was great.

Sevan Matossian (19:29):

Sorry, Brian

Andrew Hiller (19:32):

Jr I should have. JR

Sevan Matossian (19:36):

Yeah. What if you would’ve done that? I have a great question, but I know it’s not as good as JR

Andrew Hiller (19:40):

And I know it’s not gonna stack.

Taylor Self (19:42):

JR what was your question?

JR Howell (19:43):

So my question was, you know, as the years have evolved and CrossFit, you know, back in the day of three 15 was program for a workout. You know, there was a time where a three 15 deadlift was really heavy and then we got to the point on the Cincos one and on the regional’s workout with the GDS true form run and the deadlifts, that 4 0 5 was just that number. It was like, oh my gosh, they’re deadlifting 4 0 5. Did that come into play at all when deciding, Hey, back in the day that used to be a heavy deadlift. Now we’re gonna show you guys that people can back squat that wait for reps

Sevan Matossian (20:17):

Per great question. Uh, are you gonna save that for tomorrow? Well, please, please have it in the lineup. Uh, who big time step on

Andrew Hiller (20:26):

That by the way. Good job.

Sevan Matossian (20:28):

Uh, thank you. I just stole all the questions from you guys during the, the last show who big time Seon more Katie or tdc? You could throw Brian friend in there too. You could throw Brian. You could throw Brian in there too.

Andrew Hiller (20:39):

Sevan Matossian (20:41):

Uh, Tim Paulson’s, uh, Sprint at the end. Um, was that smart, smart Brian?

Taylor Self (20:52):

Where did he end up finishing in the workout?

Sevan Matossian (20:54):

Taylor Self (20:55):

Place. It was a lot of close times I think that he passed people on the last round of the workout. And I think that in general, that was the play. It was to try to pick people off in Rons four and five. So he was in his heat, He was kind of out of the mix through three rounds and he finished towards the top of his seat. I think it paid off

Sevan Matossian (21:10):

Ninth place overall. I agree. Uh, anyone disagree with that? That that was a good strategy on his part?

Andrew Hiller (21:16):

It’s his only strategy,

Sevan Matossian (21:19):

Uh, Jack Farlow. Um, although he finished, I think last in his heat, he looked really good when the camera went over to him and I never realized how long he is. Uh, JR is that going, is that going to be a, uh, problem for Emma? I mean a problem for, uh, his future in CrossFit?

JR Howell (21:42):

I don’t think so. I mean, we’ve always seen some outliers in the sport. People like Brent. I mean, Jason’s a longer guy with longer limbs. Pat’s got really long arms. It, it’s just something that he’s gonna have to work around. I think it comes into play a lot more on workouts like this with cycle rate. Just having the longer limbs, just that extra inch it takes to get from right above your knee to the front rack every time from the front rack to locking out overhead, it really, really adds up. Like in that workout, from what I saw, Jason was the only athlete, the only athlete that went unbroken on every single round of dt. And yet he still finished six or seven. And

Taylor Self (22:17):

We know, I think, I think I think Roman did also,

JR Howell (22:20):

I think Roman broke the deadlift song at least one round.

Taylor Self (22:23):

Really? Okay.

JR Howell (22:24):

Taylor Self (22:26):

I don’t think so.

JR Howell (22:27):

But we’re talking about the two best bikers probably in the game, and those are the two are the taller guys. So clearly those guys have found a way to work around that, that limb length that Jack has to kind of work his way around.

Sevan Matossian (22:40):

Uh, Brian will, Jack, will that keep Jack Farlow from ever making it to the, um, podium his body type? Oh,

Taylor Self (22:47):

Well I don’t think that in isolation. I mean, it’s very, very difficult to make the podium regardless. His body type honestly is, is somewhat similar to veers. Uh, I don’t know if his arms are quite as long as Pats are, but he’s more hair in his, his chest. Farlow is, he’s 20 years old and if you like, if you get a chance to see him up close, it’s pretty, like, it’s a pretty impressive body type for a 20 year old. I think he’s gonna, I think he is got some potential in this sport.

Sevan Matossian (23:12):

Okay. Uh, no flag for Roman and I mean this in, in all sincerity. Does anyone know what, what the point is, what that’s supposed to prove? Does anyone wanna take that question?

Taylor Self (23:24):

Hmm. I’ll take it and ask Katie tomorrow.

Sevan Matossian (23:26):

Okay. That’s what

Taylor Self (23:27):

I gonna say. If he was

JR Howell (23:28):

Gonna, he’s gonna,

Sevan Matossian (23:30):

I mean, I mean, I mean what is, what is, what is, what is that proving it’s supposed to be an inclusive event. What is that proving? We, we all know where he is from. He spoke Russian. We all see him. What, what is that supposed to prove? I, I, I don’t, I don’t get it. So if you, you hate Russia, Okay. You hate what they’re doing. Okay. But what’s, what’s that supposed to prove? I I I, I really wanna know, I’m open to being, um, slapped around, uh, what’s the first, what’s the, um, <laugh>

Taylor Self (23:58):

Hero Rogue,

Sevan Matossian (23:59):

What’s the prize money for first place for the, um, strong man? Do we know?

Taylor Self (24:04):

Like one, It’s

Taylor Self (24:05):

Like a hun It’s like a, I thought it was like one 20, but it’s over a hundred thousand for sure. I think it’s hundred 19,000 base.

Sevan Matossian (24:10):

Okay. Okay. So it’s less than the first place for either, uh, the men or the women, which is equal, um, for the, for the, uh, CrossFit competition.

Taylor Self (24:21):

Sevan Matossian (24:22):

I I I wanna tell the, the people in the chat and the strong man chat that the reason why you’re watching CrossFit is because it’s fucking subsidizing. It’s subsidizing your ability to see your dudes and as s said in the comments, so you don’t have to watch your dudes at 3:00 AM on ESPN 17

Taylor Self (24:39):

Sevan Matossian (24:40):

Thank you. Matt s

Taylor Self (24:43):

<laugh> Scott competition is in Texas. There. He’s Russian. No way. They’re gonna throw a Russian flag up.

Sevan Matossian (24:51):

Um, Vel Vener passes, uh, Roman on the bike on, uh, on one of the rounds. And then, I don’t know if you guys saw this, I don’t, I I pretty sure I saw Pat Vener was, was neck and neck with Roman and in the fourth round, uh, Vener got a no rep on his sixth shoulder to overhead. Did you guys see that? And that’s where Roman took off. Did anyone else see that? It’s either a no rep or he put the bar down after five, which I find completely, uh, unbelievable.

Taylor Self (25:24):

I, I don’t, he probably got a no rep, but I think more than anything he tried to pull a move a little too early. I just don’t think he had it in the tank to go as fast as Roman for as long as he went. I think he just tried to make a move too early or tried to make a move in a workout where he wasn’t gonna make a pass even if he did make the move.

Sevan Matossian (25:40):

Brian, what were the thoughts? Did you, did you see the no rep?

Taylor Self (25:44):

Well, I’ll tell you this, over the four heats of the workout. Well, with the exception of Noah Olson going hot and round one, which barely counts in this conversation, the only athlete who was able to pass the leader of their heat at all was Ellie Turner. Every other person that tried to make a move, it was, uh, Chandler Smith, Cole Sager, Tim Paulson, Pat Vener, Bkg, Justin Mades at one point, Ev, Sam Quant. Uh, Ellie Turner was the only person who was able to make a pass in round four or five against the heat leader from the, from the onset. So it was, uh, it was, it was kinda strange to see that there were other people that were able to make passes further on. But the heat leader, for the most part for after round two, ended up holding on no matter, you know, who made a move

Taylor Self (26:30):

And Ellie made that pass in the fifth round on the hand cleans when, uh, Annie broke, which was why I thought that maybe that no rep that she didn’t get for doing the full clean instead of the hand clean potentially gave her the workout, especially since it was within a couple of seconds of each other.

Sevan Matossian (26:48):

Uh, j Jr did you see, uh, Ellie Turner’s transition from hand cleans to the shoulder to overhead?

JR Howell (26:56):

Sevan Matossian (26:58):

Like split second fast. It, it, it’s so fast that it almost looks like a hang snatch. It is so fast.

JR Howell (27:07):

What she was doing an unbelievable job was, was like, if you were to look and see how far the bar actually moved from a flex knee position in the front rack to when she was locking it overhead, it was like, it seemed like it was three inches. It was crazy. She would just let the bar make contact with her and just push down instead of driving up at all. Like, it was nuts. Just how fast she would get under and then stand up.

Sevan Matossian (27:31):

Uh, is that, is that a natural athletic gift or is that something you can tell that man she’s put in the time?

JR Howell (27:37):

I’m sure that’s a hundreds and hundreds of reps.

Taylor Self (27:39):

He’s, Who, who are you talking about? JR

Sevan Matossian (27:41):

Ellie Turner.

JR Howell (27:44):

How fast she

Taylor Self (27:45):

Yeah, no, think, think back to the, uh, the wall balls from Hatrick at the games. That fast twitch muscle fiber that she has is, is almost unparalleled amongst both men and women in this sport right now. She is real quick at that stuff. And going back to a athlete you talked about earlier, that’s where Yo Koshi was making his money in this workout too. His hand cleans the shoulder overhead. Those 15 reps were like 17 seconds every round.

Sevan Matossian (28:11):

Um, Derek Brinkman, uh, can we talk about the fact that Vener has managed to be one of the best of all time managing a chiro practice and parenthood though? No, but thank you. Sorry. Sorry.

Taylor Self (28:20):

That’s, that’s, uh, that’s me. That guy Derek is actually me on a different computer.

Sevan Matossian (28:25):

Awesome. Yeah, I mean, Derek, Derek, it’s, it’s, it’s a, it’s a, uh, it’s a great point. Okay, here we go. Watch, watch Ellie Turner transition here.

Taylor Self (28:33):

So why don’t you scroll back a little bit. I wanna see that first wrap. Is that asking too much?

Sevan Matossian (28:40):

I don’t know. <laugh>. Damn, that answers that.

Taylor Self (28:45):

Fuck your question

Sevan Matossian (28:46):

No more. Uh,

Taylor Self (28:48):

God damnit

Taylor Self (28:49):

You know what, you know what would be really cool to see if someone could do this is to see a side by side of yo of Yona Koski, Roman Kre, Annie Zader, or maybe Ellie Turner and Laura Hvat doing the hang cleans into shoulder overhead and watch the cycle rates. That would be real. I that would be a really cool four by four side by side.

Sevan Matossian (29:08):

Uh, that will be on Brian’s Instagram first thing in the morning. Jeff Beko, I don’t know if this is truth, but a fucking brilliant, uh, edition. Um, like most of his additions, world anti-doping code rule to not display the flag of Russian athletes competing in sanctions events. I wonder what that means. It’s their code. Like they won’t do Dr. I wonder what that means. Oh, here he goes. Is this, is this event sanctioned by wa that it’s all, all good? All good points, Jeff. Thank you. Uh, clock

Taylor Self (29:34):

Cutter. Cock cutter says Waa has no such rule, and if it did, it wouldn’t bind robe or CrossFit

Andrew Hiller (29:41):

Cocker. I can’t remember his name. Whoa, whoa, whoa. That looked worse than it did in real time. Something’s going on here. Yeah. <laugh> significantly worse. What looked worse? It looked like she did a straight out power clean in this one. She did. She did. There, there was the ever so slightest stop.
