#504 – Haley Adams & Ben Smith

Brian Friend (00:00):

Um,

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

Yeah, bam. We’re live. Brian we’re live.

Brian Friend (00:04):

Okay. Welcome. Great timing.

Sevan Matossian (00:08):

<laugh> I found, I found this Polaroid today. I got this whole box of Polaroids that I took, like the last like month that, uh, Haley was pregnant. And I found this Polaroid today. Ooh, this is six days before a was born and it’s Haley doing 135 pound, uh, front squat kind of cool. Right. I don’t even know if I can do that right now. So

Brian Friend (00:32):

That’s a secret,

Sevan Matossian (00:34):

I, I guess, oh, you know, what’s funny is I show, I showed that to Haley today and she looked right at a and she goes, and that’s why you’re so strong.

Brian Friend (00:42):

<laugh> yep.

Sevan Matossian (00:45):

Uh,

Brian Friend (00:46):

What do you say? Well, I know it’s not from death <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (00:51):

They? They think I’m, I I’ve just told them. Hey, um, I’m your grandfather.

Brian Friend (00:56):

<laugh> don’t

Sevan Matossian (00:57):

Be, don’t be confused. A real dad is much stronger than me. <laugh> uh, Brian, are you collecting these? Have you gotten these? I,

Brian Friend (01:05):

I have ’em. Yeah. I only keep one on my desk though.

Sevan Matossian (01:09):

Which one?

Brian Friend (01:11):

The original,

Sevan Matossian (01:12):

Yeah, Colton. I gotta Colton up in the front. I gotta get Colton up in the front

Brian Friend (01:17):

Are over there somewhere.

Sevan Matossian (01:18):

I was gonna tell you, I had Matt Torres on this morning, but you were on for a second too.

Brian Friend (01:22):

Yeah, he was there, right?

Sevan Matossian (01:25):

Uh, he was cool. I liked him. I liked

Brian Friend (01:29):

Him. Got to spend a bunch of time with Torres at, uh, semifinals this year. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (01:34):

I, I was kind of, um, freaking out because, um, I watched, I watched Tommy and Sean and I watched, um, uh, Switzer Switzer, and I watched, um, uh, Lauren KLE and dude, they had, they had picked that bone. They had picked that trick in chicken. They had picked all the feathers off that chicken

Haley Adams (01:53):

<laugh> hello?

Sevan Matossian (01:54):

There’s nothing. There was nothing left. There was nothing left. Hi,

Brian Friend (01:57):

We can hear, can you hear us?

Haley Adams (02:01):

Yeah, I can hear

Brian Friend (02:02):

You. She says hello to try to test. If we can hear her Sevan just continues with the chicken story

Sevan Matossian (02:07):

Testing one too. We had, uh, we had Matt Torres on this morning, Hailey and like everyone and their mother had already like, cross-examined him about Phil tune and Danielle Brandon. So I was just kind of like, oh fuck. What am I gonna talk to him about? But he was dope. He, he was, he was awesome.

Haley Adams (02:21):

Oh, that’s good.

Sevan Matossian (02:23):

And then I watched your interview this morning with, uh, or, uh, this afternoon with Lauren kil from like, I don’t know, a month or two ago. Three months. Nine days ago. Fuckup. Yeah, the morning Chalkup girl. Yeah. And I was like, oh fuck. Haley. Doesn’t talk.

Haley Adams (02:40):

Yeah, I do.

Sevan Matossian (02:41):

I know. But then I quickly went over to our podcast and we talked for like two hours and 40 minutes. But like Lauren Khalil had to like pull teeth to get you to talk.

Haley Adams (02:49):

<laugh> some questions are just like hard, you know? It’s like, you feel like you’re just repeating the same thing. You’re like saying the same words. So it’s just like, I don’t know. Sometimes

Sevan Matossian (02:57):

Do you have, do you have a boyfriend?

Haley Adams (03:01):

The why

Sevan Matossian (03:02):

<laugh> I said some questions are hard and I’m tired. Well, I’ll tell you why. Cuz those cats are taking up way too much of your fucking time. As concerned as you start starting to turn a little bit weird, like a cat lady, your cat’s in your refrigerator. He’s like around you while you’re cooking. I’m like, Hey, if she had a boyfriend, he would put a fucking, he’d put a stop to that shit. <laugh> she’s a captain. You got a boyfriend that is awesome. Congratulations or girlfriend or whatever you have, you have, you have a, you have an intimate relationship with someone. You have a, uh, a, a mate that you’re in courtship, useful courtship with

Haley Adams (03:37):

My face. Turning red.

Sevan Matossian (03:38):

No, no,

Brian Friend (03:39):

It’s not. You’re good.

Haley Adams (03:42):

Ugh.

Sevan Matossian (03:43):

Ugh. God gross. Um, you’ve always been a mayhem athlete. Mm-hmm <affirmative> always

Haley Adams (03:51):

No take that back. Uh, I, when I lived in North Carolina, I followed, uh, actually BR strength for a while. Um, I, yeah, Matt and I go way back actually in like 20 17, 20 18, I knew him then. So,

Sevan Matossian (04:05):

And he, he was just a young buck

Haley Adams (04:07):

Mm-hmm <affirmative>

Sevan Matossian (04:09):

And you know what? I, I finally, I, um, I realize today about you. You’re not a, you’re like a hardcore veteran now you’ve crossed over like for so long. I kind of wanted to keep you in this like camp of just with the newbies, but you’re like so far from a newbie.

Haley Adams (04:24):

Yeah. It’s in my seventh year

Sevan Matossian (04:27):

Nuts.

Haley Adams (04:28):

Yeah. Tell me about it.

Sevan Matossian (04:30):

Absolutely nuts. Are you enjoying it?

Haley Adams (04:32):

Yeah, I really do like, but um, I’ve don’t get me wrong. Some days are like really hard and like you give up a lot, but I wouldn’t wanna do anything else other than being an athlete. I’m very thankful for it.

Sevan Matossian (04:44):

What’s going on with your camera right now? What’s this what’s this I, I like it. It’s very unique. You see these like three yellow things on top and the green thing don’t touch it. Don’t touch it like a plant or something. Oh, that’s you’re it’s nice. It’s it’s nice a case

Haley Adams (04:56):

It’s propped up on my sunflowers.

Sevan Matossian (04:59):

Oh, it’s very cool.

Haley Adams (05:00):

I didn’t see that it was on it. <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (05:04):

So tell me about that. Um, how convenient that you were with brute strength and when you were at BR strength, they didn’t have the camp in Florida. That’s new. You were, were you at their camp facility?

Haley Adams (05:15):

Um, we were in Utah. Um, I spent a few weeks at there actually training. Um, but yeah, it was when I was a teenager. So I was with ’em for two years, I think.

Sevan Matossian (05:27):

And then, um, and how did you end up there? How did you pick those guys?

Haley Adams (05:31):

Um, I think it was, uh, honestly, I’m not sure. I almost said power monkey, but that was someone else,

Brian Friend (05:41):

But they were, they were in Utah, but it might

Haley Adams (05:43):

Have been in Brook actually.

Brian Friend (05:44):

Were you living still living in North Carolina at that time? Yeah,

Haley Adams (05:47):

I think it might have been Brook ends.

Sevan Matossian (05:49):

Meaning you met her, you were friends with her and she’s like, Hey, should come check out BR strength. And you went over there and started doing their programming?

Haley Adams (05:54):

Yeah, honestly it’s been like five, six years, so I don’t really remember, but I’m pretty sure it was broke.

Sevan Matossian (06:01):

And, and then how did you transition to mayhem?

Haley Adams (06:07):

Um, so after the 2018 teenager games, I was like, uh, I don’t think I can make it as individual. So they had reached out, um, and asked if I wanted to be on the second team. And um, I was like, sure, because I’m not gonna make it as individual. So I honestly never would’ve come to Cookville if it wasn’t to be on a team. So it was kind of cool how it worked out

Sevan Matossian (06:32):

You’re

Brian Friend (06:33):

Was that like, so this was between 2018 and 2019. Yeah. So a lot of things changed about the qualifying process mm-hmm <affirmative> so when you moved there, you were intending to go on a team, but as that qualifying process was like unfolding, did you reconsider and say, well, that’s a lot of people like, maybe I could make it.

Haley Adams (06:49):

Yeah, because I think it originally it said that you had to like win a sanctional. So in my head I’m like, no way I can do that. But then like once the backfill started, then it may become like a little bit more realistic. So then like in February I ended up qualifying for the open, but I did kind of change my mind a little bit and which was like totally fine with it. So,

Brian Friend (07:08):

So yeah, I was

Sevan Matossian (07:08):

Gonna say going on a team

Brian Friend (07:10):

Done pretty well in the open, open style format.

Haley Adams (07:13):

Yeah. So I, I qualified through the open. He was like, you’d just be our alternate. And um, they switched out independence. So,

Sevan Matossian (07:21):

So you didn’t go as a team that year. You actually went as an individual.

Haley Adams (07:24):

I was out of the team division then.

Brian Friend (07:27):

So team, team. Yeah. Sorry,

Sevan Matossian (07:28):

Team

Brian Friend (07:29):

Up, going as an individual in 2019. Yeah. And final 10.

Sevan Matossian (07:33):

And you’ve never gone and you’ve never gone as, as team.

Haley Adams (07:37):

Um, I did like one competition at guap PZA and that was it,

Sevan Matossian (07:41):

But

Brian Friend (07:42):

Never this past January.

Sevan Matossian (07:43):

Yeah.

Haley Adams (07:44):

Not a team gal,

Sevan Matossian (07:46):

But you were gonna be a team gal.

Haley Adams (07:48):

Yeah. But that’s cuz I thought the only chance to make it.

Sevan Matossian (07:53):

And what did you do?

Brian Friend (07:53):

You I’m surprised, I’m actually surprised that you didn’t think you could make it after 2018. Oh, because when I first met you <laugh> do you remember, do you, you probably have no idea. I dropped into your gym in college hill. You and Britney were training for the 2017 regionals.

Haley Adams (08:08):

I don’t remember, but

Brian Friend (08:09):

No, but I’ll, I’ll tell you cuz this will be, this is how I remember you. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (08:13):

What state is that? Brian college hill.

Brian Friend (08:15):

It’s in North Carolina. It’s in, I think the north or Northwest part state. And uh, I was on a road trip and I, I saw that you guys were training. You like posted something on Instagram. And I was like, it was a Sunday and I was like, oh, they’re actually open. Maybe I’ll drop in and they’ll let me do a little workout cuz I wanted to, just to move. And so, uh, they were there. I dropped in, you guys were doing a, a workout that I could not do is ring muscle up overhead squat workout for regionals that year

Haley Adams (08:41):

Workout.

Brian Friend (08:42):

I did a little Murf training outside with my vest. And then, uh, we were watching Cody Moony compete up at the east regional. I think he was friends with you guys. And uh, one of your coaches, this is the first year you made regionals, but you were still only 16 years old. And, and when you’re, I think, I think it was either Brittany’s mom or the coach that was there, said something like, cuz you were getting kind of intense. <laugh> watching it. And they’re like, remember Hailey, it’s only your first year. You’re going there for fun and you know, experience whatever. And then we ended up leaving and you and I were walking out to the parking lot together and I, and you just stopped short right in front of me and turned and pointed at me and said, just so you know, I’m not going there for fun. I’m going there to win <laugh> and I’m

Mattew Souza (09:22):

Like, damn.

Brian Friend (09:24):

And I’m thinking to myself, I’m like, that’s not like she’s 16 year old girl. And she doesn’t know me. I’m just some guy that just dropped in a gym. And it was important enough for you to tell me that <laugh>

Haley Adams (09:33):

Like, I would never even think of saying something like <laugh> CrossFit were like, if the CrossFit games are supposed to me, I was like, oh my gosh, like just total fair girl. So as scry as it was, I definitely believe I did say something like that. But now I would never say something like that. Oh that’s

Brian Friend (09:53):

Well it’s given me a good, like, like a, a perception of your, like the fierce mentality that you have that you’re, you, you don’t go out there just to, just to do it. You know, you’re going out there to try to win every time you could take

Haley Adams (10:03):

The fight. Right. It’s not just for fun.

Sevan Matossian (10:05):

You’re not a team girl.

Haley Adams (10:08):

No, I don’t sports either growing up.

Sevan Matossian (10:11):

You’re what, say it again. I

Haley Adams (10:12):

Didn’t really like team sports either growing up. I don’t know

Sevan Matossian (10:17):

Because why?

Haley Adams (10:18):

I don’t know. I just like being responsible for like, for myself, if I do bad is on me. You know, I don’t have to worry about letting someone else down

Sevan Matossian (10:26):

And two cats and uh, potential mate. That’s lingering

Haley Adams (10:31):

My God.

Sevan Matossian (10:32):

Hey, I think I may have heard him in the video when you were eating and they were in a day in a life and you, the cameraman was there talking to you, but then there was someone off camera who said something with a no,

Brian Friend (10:45):

No, it couldn’t have possibly have been a friend or a training partner. <laugh> yeah.

Mattew Souza (10:48):

Or just somebody else working on the documentary.

Sevan Matossian (10:50):

<laugh> and it, it wasn’t post Malone or machine gun Kelly

Haley Adams (10:53):

Personally? Not no <laugh>

Brian Friend (10:55):

No. Okay.

Sevan Matossian (10:58):

Um, seven years in, um, uh, uh, Mr. Olson se on some cash to send Haley a CEO shirt.

Brian Friend (11:05):

Absolutely. I have five burpees for misspelling of name

Sevan Matossian (11:08):

Who who’s. Oh, uh, how do you spell your name? Hailey burpees.

Haley Adams (11:12):

My

Sevan Matossian (11:12):

Name H H a L E Y.

Brian Friend (11:15):

The best it’s literally it’s right there on the screen.

Haley Adams (11:17):

I know all the time

Mattew Souza (11:20):

He donated money. It’s fine. It’s

Sevan Matossian (11:21):

Fine. You can spell it however you want Mr. Roll.

Brian Friend (11:23):

Hopefully when, if he correct that he still spells her last name with only one S though

Sevan Matossian (11:27):

<laugh> Hailey, Adam,

Haley Adams (11:29):

Adam <laugh>.

Sevan Matossian (11:31):

Um, is your, uh, seven years in, are you, are you having some, um, body comp, uh, uh, significant changes? Um, you said that you’ve changed your you’ve committed. I mean, you put in so much work in the complex, you, you did 200 pounds this year. You put in so much work to change your training and your eating. And I think in this most recent video, I think I’m seeing like some, some traps, like show up on the scene.

Haley Adams (11:57):

Yeah. I mean, I think if you look at a 16 year old body compared to a 21 year old body, it’s like, you’re mature now, like kind of grow into a woman and you do your body transforms. So

Sevan Matossian (12:08):

You’re only 21.

Haley Adams (12:10):

Yeah. <laugh> wow. Is that surprising?

Sevan Matossian (12:16):

I just, it’s just crazy. Seven years. Seven years.

Haley Adams (12:19):

Yeah. That’s what I, I still remember Carson, like it was yesterday. Like it Tommy’s ghost die so fast.

Sevan Matossian (12:26):

Um, do you do any signs of burnout?

Haley Adams (12:28):

Uh, no, no wrong. There are like hard days, but I still love what I do and I’m healthy and yeah.

Sevan Matossian (12:38):

Um, tell me about, uh, Taja, who, who is, who is that in your life?

Haley Adams (12:44):

Taja is like my best friend here. Um, we kind of started as training partners. Uh, I was training with the team in 2019 and then, so we trained together every day. And then when she, uh, stopped competing, she was still there for me every day. And I didn’t really have someone in that role of like, obviously rich is like my coach, but I, I needed someone that was like there for me, you know, um, to, you know, carry her bags and give me food. So when I made the 2020 games, I was like, Tasha, do you wanna go with me? <laugh> and we just kind of went from there. And so she’s but honestly the biggest blessing in my life. And she’s amazing.

Sevan Matossian (13:26):

Do you see her every day? Yeah,

Haley Adams (13:28):

Most days.

Sevan Matossian (13:30):

And, and, and she even works out with you mm-hmm

Haley Adams (13:32):

<affirmative> so she’s still really fit. She didn’t have to scale, but scale the workouts just to like, keep up with me or give me company.

Sevan Matossian (13:44):

So is she, um, describe her more to you? Is she, is she like an emotional, uh, support for you? Uh, mental. Is she like, what, what does she do for you?

Haley Adams (13:54):

He’s everything. She’s who I go to if I’m having a bad day or just basically anything or something funny? Anything. She’s my best friend.

Sevan Matossian (14:03):

Yeah. That’s awesome. And she’s okay with you being friends with mal O’Brien.

Haley Adams (14:07):

Yeah, she loves the word friends. Kidding.

Sevan Matossian (14:10):

Uh, she might be jealous. You never know you?

Haley Adams (14:12):

No.

Sevan Matossian (14:12):

No. Okay. She there’s there’s room. Maybe. She’s not like you’re not a team girl. Maybe Tasha’s not like I share a share a friend girl.

Haley Adams (14:19):

Oh my God.

Brian Friend (14:20):

<laugh> she’s come. Is she gonna come to the games with you again this year? Yeah,

Haley Adams (14:24):

Coach. Yep.

Brian Friend (14:25):

Do you think she has a good read on when it’s appropriate to say nothing to you?

Haley Adams (14:30):

Oh yeah. <laugh> they’ll just, yeah, she knows. Like after, um, after last year wasn’t after the clean, surprisingly I think it might have been after the deadlift and said push up workout. I just kinda like sat there and just had this like, look on my face. And we didn’t say anything for probably 30 minutes for now.

Brian Friend (14:53):

Yeah. It was a tough last day for you.

Haley Adams (14:55):

Yeah, it was

Sevan Matossian (14:57):

At, at where? At, at where?

Haley Adams (14:59):

The games last year.

Sevan Matossian (15:00):

Oh, you’re well, in your last competition’s been amazing.

Haley Adams (15:06):

Semi fun

Sevan Matossian (15:07):

Strength in depth. Yeah.

Brian Friend (15:09):

Strength in depth.

Sevan Matossian (15:10):

Syndicate Synetic yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s what I said. Sign significant depth sign. SI significant depth. Uh, you killed it.

Haley Adams (15:19):

Thank you.

Sevan Matossian (15:20):

Yeah, you’re stoked. Right? That’s how you wanted go into the games, right?

Haley Adams (15:23):

Yeah. I mean, I was super pumped. I technically never won a competition, so <laugh>

Brian Friend (15:28):

I was, she got, she got robbed by the, uh, the Tia clause the year before

Haley Adams (15:33):

<laugh> from not really, but,

Brian Friend (15:36):

Well, you know, she was like, she, she had, she, she couldn’t go to where she was supposed to compete, so she had to go somewhere and you got the short straw and she came to yours. Well,

Haley Adams (15:45):

I feel worse for the person six, but yeah.

Brian Friend (15:48):

Yeah. Everyone got the short straw. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (15:52):

Hailey, when we, I can’t remember where I heard rich say it. I don’t know if it was on this podcast or, or somewhere else, but when we were talking about your training, I, I, and I’m paraphrasing. I think he said that he wanted to see you, um, do less metabolic conditioning and more strength training and that you were stubborn in your ways. I think that’s what he said is, is he, is he, is, he is, but he’s your coach, right? Yeah. The reason why I bring this up is because, and, and aren’t you supposed to just, um, uh, bend the knee and like, be like, okay, my coach knows best.

Haley Adams (16:28):

Yeah. But I’m a little bit psycho. So

Sevan Matossian (16:32):

<laugh>

Haley Adams (16:33):

So I at night. So if I don’t do certain things, but um, this off season, I was definitely a lot better about it. Um, and then as game training starts, like, it’s kind of hard not to, so cuz you’re just trying to be really fit and I did better this year.

Sevan Matossian (16:50):

Yeah. Congratulations you. I mean you physically look stronger. Are you heavier than you were last year?

Haley Adams (16:57):

Um, I don’t weigh myself anymore.

Sevan Matossian (16:58):

<laugh> wow. Good on you.

Haley Adams (17:00):

How long ago did you stop doing that? Um, last year.

Brian Friend (17:05):

Cool.

Sevan Matossian (17:07):

So no one knows, uh, trifecta since 2017.

Haley Adams (17:15):

What’d you say

Sevan Matossian (17:16):

Trifecta since 2017?

Haley Adams (17:19):

Yeah. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (17:20):

That’s crazy. And basically, and your go-to meal now is venison.

Haley Adams (17:24):

I love venison. It’s so good. I have it every day for lunch

Sevan Matossian (17:27):

And for us, California, people that’s deer. Right? Mm-hmm

Haley Adams (17:30):

<affirmative>

Sevan Matossian (17:31):

Why don’t they just call it deer?

Haley Adams (17:34):

Mm, I don’t know. I don’t make the rules

Sevan Matossian (17:36):

Just in venison. And uh, how did you get, why them tell me why them, like I just eat. I just go to the grocery store and get food, but should I be doing trifecta too?

Haley Adams (17:45):

Well, I hate cooking and especially I hate cooking meat. So it was the biggest lifesaver. I’d just come home, heat it up in the microwave on it.

Sevan Matossian (17:54):

And they just send you a box full of ice and uh, dry ice. And you just open that shit up and get to get, get to town.

Haley Adams (17:59):

Ah, they send it every Friday. I love it. Like I actually eat it every day for every meal.

Sevan Matossian (18:06):

I saw you where I’m using, uh, plastic utensils. And you were microwaving, um, oatmeal in a plastic bowl. I, I don’t, I don’t approve

Haley Adams (18:16):

Why.

Sevan Matossian (18:17):

I don’t know because I’m old. Can, what about some glass bowls and some steel utensils?

Haley Adams (18:25):

I like what I like,

Sevan Matossian (18:26):

I know, but I just feel like a plastic. You put it in the microwave and you heat it up and like some shit might be coming off there, like off gassing or like you’re getting like some something in your body that’s like not good.

Haley Adams (18:38):

You know, I’m sure the air that we breathe is worse.

Sevan Matossian (18:40):

All right. Well you win.

Mattew Souza (18:42):

She’s not worried about the plastic in the microwave. Yeah. Hey, one thing we have in common is I actually was sponsored by trifecta for a little bit.

Haley Adams (18:49):

Really?

Mattew Souza (18:50):

Yeah. I was, uh, helping him out with some stuff with some firefighters that I do and some other, uh, corporate, uh, businesses that I worked for for a little bit. So I got free trifecta for a while. It was awesome.

Haley Adams (18:59):

It’s it’s so helpful.

Mattew Souza (19:01):

It was, I was, I was yolked then it was great.

Sevan Matossian (19:04):

You were, yeah. You still are kind of yolked.

Mattew Souza (19:06):

Thanks. It’s just the shirt I buy ’em size smaller.

Sevan Matossian (19:09):

Um, so you just, they just, they just, they just know what you want. They just know like someone comes out and does a body comp on you or like, Hey, this is what I work out. Or like, how do they know what to send you? How do you know how much to eat? How do you figure all that out?

Haley Adams (19:20):

You just place an order. <laugh>

Sevan Matossian (19:23):

So, so they don’t, they’re not like, Hey, Haley, we think you should eat this much. Um here’s oh, okay. No. And, and who is your nutritionist?

Haley Adams (19:32):

Um, I work with M two. I’ve worked with ’em for a while. I’m yeah. I basically know kind of what I’m doing now, but it’s nice to have someone check in every once in a while.

Sevan Matossian (19:43):

How is the, um, how’s the barn these days? Is it filling up with people?

Haley Adams (19:48):

Um, actually a lot of people are at the, um, athlete facility, but I’m still, I hard at the barn, so,

Sevan Matossian (19:57):

Well, what’s the athlete facility. That’s up and running now.

Haley Adams (20:00):

Yeah. Uh, where you, you probably see the videos and stuff of, um, people that may I’m working out there, but yeah, it’s up and running now.

Sevan Matossian (20:10):

What is the athlete facility? I don’t know what that is.

Haley Adams (20:13):

So it’s like attached to, um, mayhem. Um, and it has AC and it’s really nice VO.

Mattew Souza (20:22):

That’s a

Haley Adams (20:22):

Plus. Yeah. RO I might have photo, no,

Mattew Souza (20:28):

This one mayhem athletes.

Sevan Matossian (20:30):

So now there’s, there’s three gyms now there’s the affiliate. There’s the athlete facility. And there’s the barn.

Haley Adams (20:36):

Y yeah. So there’s the gym, the athlete facility in the barn. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (20:41):

And, uh, and, and why are people, um, moving to, to the athlete facility? Is the barn, is it because the barn’s too hot?

Haley Adams (20:49):

Um, I’m not sure. I think it’s just personal preference. Like, I really love the barn. I lo I feel safe there I’m comfortable. I just, yeah. I love the vibes there. I like it.

Sevan Matossian (21:00):

And, and who else is there? Is G there

Haley Adams (21:03):

At the barn.

Sevan Matossian (21:04):

Yeah.

Haley Adams (21:05):

Um,

Brian Friend (21:06):

There’s a ton of, there are a ton of athletes in Cookville right

Haley Adams (21:09):

Now. Yeah. Like today it was just me, so, and Ellie and yeah. And then everyone else is at facility

Sevan Matossian (21:17):

And Tasia.

Haley Adams (21:18):

And Tasias there this afternoon.

Brian Friend (21:20):

When all these games, athletes come into town, where do they all stay?

Haley Adams (21:25):

I think they’re staying day in a hotel.

Brian Friend (21:28):

It’s interesting cuz I, I don’t know if you know this seven, but there’s like, uh, they’ve come from Australia, from South Africa from all over Europe. Yeah. Auburn athletes. And they’ve been there for like a week or two. Some of them already.

Haley Adams (21:40):

Yeah. I saw an Australian team there, um, this last weekend. Um, and Laars there.

Sevan Matossian (21:50):

So these are people who are doing the Mayhan programming and when they go to the games, they reach out and they say, Hey, can we come early? And prep is, is, is it pretty informal or is it pretty, is it formal?

Haley Adams (22:01):

Um, I’m I definitely think that they reach out to someone, um, like that’s over the program and make sure and ask and like get everything set up. So at least I think so.

Sevan Matossian (22:11):

And, and you’re in the best shape you’ve ever been in your life right now?

Haley Adams (22:14):

Yeah, I think so.

Sevan Matossian (22:16):

It, it it’s, it’s all systems go.

Haley Adams (22:19):

It’s what

Sevan Matossian (22:20):

It’s all systems go. You seem so confident in the, um, what, what’s the video called strength and depth, depth and strength. Syndicate, syndicate. There it is. Syndicate. And the syndicate video. You, you just seem so confident.

Haley Adams (22:32):

Yeah. I mean, I tried to have more confidence in myself this year, so,

Sevan Matossian (22:38):

And, and when you say you’ve been doing more, um, strength training, can you tell us what that looks like?

Haley Adams (22:43):

I feel like I squat all the time. I think my legs just are always, um, yeah, just more boots, strength, accessory work.

Sevan Matossian (22:55):

And the girls. Um, Andrea and, uh, Taylor are

Haley Adams (23:00):

Strong.

Sevan Matossian (23:01):

<laugh> like, fuck you don’t train with me strong. Or like, I train with me. I wanna chase you down.

Haley Adams (23:07):

I mean, I cannot, if we’re doing like one about second, so now, oh my God. I think Andrea is squatted like three 40 the other day. I was like, holy crap.

Sevan Matossian (23:17):

Wow. I wonder what, how old is she? She’s 10 years older than you, right?

Haley Adams (23:21):

32. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (23:22):

11 years. I wonder what she squatted when she was 21.

Haley Adams (23:27):

I don’t know. That’s a good question, but she’s so fit too. She’s not strong. I’m like, I’m glad she’s not an individual because she would, I mean, she’s already gotten top 10 as individual. She would do some damage

Sevan Matossian (23:40):

<laugh> yeah. You’ve always been impressed by them. Right. Brian, both of them.

Brian Friend (23:44):

Yeah. But we talked about it on the team show you. I think Andrea’s skill set overall translates better to an individual composite competition and tailors fit and tailors, like almost the perfect team athlete.

Haley Adams (23:55):

Mm-hmm <affirmative> yeah. So fit.

Sevan Matossian (23:59):

Who’s gonna watch the cats when you’re, uh, at the games. <laugh>

Haley Adams (24:02):

Uh, my mom’s gonna take them home to Carolina with their cats and then people will watch them there.

Sevan Matossian (24:09):

Um, what about your, um, fat cat? What are you gonna do about that?

Haley Adams (24:12):

What do you mean?

Sevan Matossian (24:13):

What? Not the black one, but the other one, the one that

Haley Adams (24:16):

Likes not gonna do with him,

Sevan Matossian (24:17):

Like what are you gonna, how are you gonna get him to like, is he gonna get a membership at mayhem?

Haley Adams (24:21):

<laugh> he

Sevan Matossian (24:25):

Is off the carbs, off the couch, off the couch, off the

Haley Adams (24:27):

Couch. <laugh> he’s he’s living his life. He’s fun.

Brian Friend (24:31):

Your parents aren’t coming to Madison this year.

Haley Adams (24:34):

Oh no, they

Brian Friend (24:34):

Are. Oh, they

Haley Adams (24:35):

Are. Yeah. But my mom’s so nice. And she’s gonna drive up, take me to the airport and then take my back home in North Carolina.

Brian Friend (24:42):

I, I met your parents in 2019, right before you won, uh, rookie of the year.

Haley Adams (24:47):

Aw, really?

Brian Friend (24:48):

<laugh> they were do. I think they were down in the front row with Chris and Heidi probably. And they introduced me to them and they were, uh, they may have had some tears in their eyes

Haley Adams (24:56):

Probably,

Brian Friend (24:57):

But I didn’t, they didn’t strike me as the people that miss you competing at the games.

Haley Adams (25:01):

Oh, no, they definitely would not.

Sevan Matossian (25:04):

Uh, in one, in one of the videos, it showed that, uh, from doing cleans on your collarbone, you had like, you had been attacked by a vampire. I,

Haley Adams (25:13):

Um, one over here. No another one over here. It, I don’t know. I can’t get rid of it.

Sevan Matossian (25:21):

Uh, how, how does that affect your training at all? Like, like if you had a hand tear and you were doing deadlifts and it was bad enough, you know, you can’t do, you can’t do train the next day or whatever would, is it something that could fuck you up? Like slow you down?

Haley Adams (25:34):

Say I can’t train, but there was one day it hurt was hurting so bad that like, every time it landed on it, I wasn’t crying. But you know, when something hurt so bad that your eyes were just like feeling with water. It was like that. And I was like, okay, I need to like do something with this today. So I just like put a knee sleeve over it.

Mattew Souza (25:51):

I was gonna say, you should probably like bust out like a little, uh, attachment or something there and get a product behind that and just endorse it.

Haley Adams (25:58):

It

Mattew Souza (25:59):

Million dollar idea, the little Haley Adams pad, little crash pad.

Haley Adams (26:04):

So,

Sevan Matossian (26:04):

Uh, is that new for this year? Has that always been happening to you?

Haley Adams (26:07):

I’ve had the one on the left for like forever, but the one on the right is new, but the one on the left is kind of like Alice, honestly, though it doesn’t hurt as bad, but the right one, since it’s new hurt so bad.

Sevan Matossian (26:21):

Who, who was it? Was it SI Sidney tion, someone we were interviewing had broken either their collarbone or their top rib or something. And they didn’t know. Have you ever broke that thing? Haley

Haley Adams (26:37):

Hope I haven’t.

Brian Friend (26:40):

It was Sydney. Yeah. Yeah. She could like finished competing that season with it it,

Haley Adams (26:44):

Oh, wow. It wouldn’t surprise me if I did though.

Brian Friend (26:47):

Hailey, I got a question for you, but you know, at the, at the ranch, at the, the last event, obviously you, you ripped your hands really badly. And so did I think Brooke also, and, uh, and I noticed that like, you know, Tia and, um, and Matt did not rip their hands at all. And I was like, in my mind, I’m wondering to myself is like, are they just, you know, they’re, they’re, they’re winning everything. Are they also just better at hand care? And is there, you know, is that something you went back home and like talked to rich about or, or tried to make sure that that doesn’t happen again?

Haley Adams (27:14):

No, I mean, I think it’s just kind of like overload of everything that we had done. I mean, just like how some people are more sensitive to other things. I think maybe my hands are just are done for and unfortunately ripped. Um, but I do try to like shave my callouses down and stuff, but I think it was just overload of volume that caused it. So

Sevan Matossian (27:37):

How’s the team look this year, who, from the videos they look Savage and unbeatable and Sam what’d I say

Brian Friend (27:44):

Team, but you know, there are three

Sevan Matossian (27:46):

Oh team team, sorry, teams all. No, no nevermind team. How’s the team <laugh> I mean, you know, the team is what’s is, um, rich said that that’s the best team he’s ever been on. Is, does it look like it when you’re watching him outta the corner of your eye?

Haley Adams (27:59):

Yeah. I mean, they’re all super fit. Like, like I said about Andrea, like, holy crap. I mean, same with Taylor, same with Sam, obviously rich. Um, and they work really well together. They look super smooth on the worm. I mean, I think they’re super solid.

Sevan Matossian (28:14):

Um, any, anyone have a chance against them?

Haley Adams (28:17):

I don’t really know much about how team stuff is going. So, I mean, they’re definitely not gonna, I don’t know,

Brian Friend (28:28):

But it’s, it, it would take a Herculean effort to take them down this year, I think, but there, but the team division’s very, very good. There are some really good teams besides that.

Haley Adams (28:37):

Um, but yeah, they’re super fit.

Brian Friend (28:40):

Do the three teams, do they work out together at all or is it primarily just like on their own?

Haley Adams (28:45):

Um, I know they worked out together, uh, this last weekend, but, um, I think usually just with everyone schedule, it’s a little mixed up.

Brian Friend (28:53):

Yeah. It’s it can be tough to get 12 people at the same time, all have jobs and whatever

Sevan Matossian (28:58):

You getting a third cat after the game this year, you make podium, you’re gonna treat yourself to a new cat. Like, you know what? Fuck it. I deserve it. <laugh>

Haley Adams (29:05):

Not a dog.

Sevan Matossian (29:06):

A dog. Oh

Haley Adams (29:07):

Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (29:09):

Uh, I’m sense. You’re like a docs. You want a din

Haley Adams (29:14):

I would love an Australian shepherd, but I think I’m a good lab.

Sevan Matossian (29:17):

Wow. A lab you said, wow, big, big dog. You

Haley Adams (29:20):

Can never go wrong with a lab. So,

Sevan Matossian (29:23):

Wow. So

Mattew Souza (29:24):

You’re a cat in dog person.

Haley Adams (29:26):

Yes. Only got, because like, I can’t take care of a dog yet or I wasn’t ready.

Mattew Souza (29:32):

You know? Very mature decision.

Haley Adams (29:33):

Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (29:34):

Cause your, how does your friend feel about the cat and the refrigerator?

Haley Adams (29:40):

What friend?

Sevan Matossian (29:41):

Just, I don’t know. Your whatever friend, just any of your friend. How do your friends feel for just a, your mystery friend? How does your mystery friend feel about the cat in the fridge

Haley Adams (29:49):

Mystery friend? Is this any friend?

Sevan Matossian (29:51):

Yeah. Just any friend. Yeah. I mean, it’s my house. Your boyfriend. How’s your boyfriend feel about the cat in the fridgerator counters.
