#436 – Granite Games Event 3 Recap | Pat Vellner, Anikha Greer, Brian Friend, Townsend, Hiller, Howell, Self

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

Oh, I got so many great DMS of people talking about how, uh, the show’s just flowing with all the chaos and I, and I’m just so proud of that. Bam. We’re live. Woo. Uh, can we make, will plumbers scream big, uh, Suza and then the rest of us tiny. How do we do that? Ah, will plumber screen

Will Plumber (00:21):

Crowd is

Sevan Matossian (00:21):

Not pretty good. It looks like a beautiful day though. And it looks like a beautiful venue and it does look like a beautiful setup.

Andrew Hiller (00:28):

Well, how did it look? 20 minutes ago?

Sevan Matossian (00:31):

I guess,

Will Plumber (00:32):

Thi this, this was full right here. Okay. And then over there was pretty decent. It looks like everyone’s cleared out because they’re setting up for the teams right now.

Sevan Matossian (00:40):

I mean, people are just missing out. I mean, if you’re a CrossFitter and you like CrossFit competition, I mean, I dunno if I personally would go to it, but if, but if you like that stuff, I mean, this is perfect. Is it expensive? Will, how much did it cost to get in there?

Will Plumber (00:53):

I think for the weekend it was around one 50.

Sevan Matossian (00:56):

Okay. Is that what you paid or are you media?

Will Plumber (00:58):

No, I’m not media, not real media.

Sevan Matossian (01:01):

<laugh> what happened? Oh, we lost Susan and, uh, Caleb they’re behind the scenes. Um, what, what at, at the end of that, um, uh, at watching that workout, we saw, um, Chandler Smith doing some pretty crazy heaving. Yeah. Uh, some pretty crazy heaving. And then in the final heat we actually saw Kowski take a knee.

Will Plumber (01:24):

Yeah. So Chandler had two people. Uh, he was the last one off the field from his heat. He had two medics on his side, basically walking him up here. I’ll show you the stairs here. Let me flip my camera, the stairs right there. So this is where the athletes enter and exit the field or they enter on that side and then they exit to this side. So he had two medics basically on each side, carrying him up the stairs. And then right about there, Brent OWK after his event had to stop and held onto the railing for about 15 seconds.

Sevan Matossian (01:58):

Okay. Sorry. I got confused. Let, let’s go back a second. Are you saying that Chandler Smith had two medics help him up or OWS did,

Will Plumber (02:05):

Uh, Chandler Smith had two medics. He was the last one off the field for his key. Okay. And then Kowski basically just had one of the, uh, like athlete handlers or whatever next to him. Okay. Like he, he was, he was in better shape than Chandler.

Sevan Matossian (02:19):

No shit. Okay. Uh, um, Caleb, can you play the video that will got of FKI? Don’t play it to the end. Just play the part where he is at the stairs please.

Andrew Hiller (03:01):

But I like the end,

Sevan Matossian (03:02):

Ryan. Caleb, can we get that video again? Brian friend. Hi. How are you?

Brian Friend (03:30):

Pretty good.

Sevan Matossian (03:31):

We have, we have two, we have two people on site. Um, uh, will any, anything else that you saw that was just crazy?

Will Plumber (03:38):

Uh, the wall ball standards. So it was about 50 50. Um, some people were throwing to the blue line and some were throwing to flight. Uh, our told about the, so the easier line, but it was, it was about a six to 12 inch difference.

Sevan Matossian (03:56):

Okay. Okay. Yeah. And, and, and, and which line was the official line? The higher line or the low line?

Will Plumber (04:02):

I don’t know. I couldn’t tell you <laugh> no, I was, I was asking, I was asking the people around like, Hey, do you know what the standard is? And they’re like, no clue that, that it was hit or Ms. Chandler was throwing to the white line the entire time. And he was getting some pretty good. He was getting a lot of no reps, but then Matt de Lugo was throwing barely to the blue line every time.

Sevan Matossian (04:26):

Uh it’s uh, Trina made the comment, what standards. That’s a line from the 2008 documentary, every second counts, Matt murky, uh, screams that what standards? Great. Do you know that line Hiller? Is that in your movie? Repertoire. Oh, Hiller. You

Andrew Hiller (04:40):

Need that? Never line of any movie ever.

Sevan Matossian (04:42):

Oh, good. Okay, good, good.

Andrew Hiller (04:43):

I I’ve got, I’ve seen that movie. I got the D for sale on rogue. It’s like 10% off on road. Anything.

Sevan Matossian (04:50):

I, I have a box of like 400 of the DVDs somewhere in <laugh> when they cleaned out the office. Wanted the place. What happened? Brian? Brian, Brian ditched us

Will Plumber (05:01):

Apparently.

Sevan Matossian (05:02):

Yeah. Okay, brother. Well, thank you very much. Uh, keep up to good work. Thanks for all the insights. Uh, and, uh, thank you. Have fun.

Will Plumber (05:09):

Yep. See you guys.

Sevan Matossian (05:13):

Uh, I am, um, I wanna apologize right away for the shots. Uh, I took at thinking that it was gonna be silly to do two of those dumbbells and then walk up two steps. It actually ended up being brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And when we saw we saw Phil tune and I mean, I mean, having Falkowski drop to one knee, a specimen like Kim, a guy who’s crushing it. And then Phil tune passed through really puts everything into perspective. Right?

Andrew Hiller (05:38):

Correct. Uh, I think that when we were talking about it, initially, we thought it was one dumbbell and ended up being two dumbbells, which made a difference, a big difference. Especially in the earlier heats, it was really beating people up in the earlier heats.

Sevan Matossian (05:53):

What do you think, do, do, do you want, what, what’s the word? The, is it repentance? What, what, what do you think, um, Mr. How did you like it?

JR Howell (06:00):

Yeah, I mean, I think I mentioned when Ben was on that, it was two dumbbells. And after you did, and I think the response was, it should be two, 100 pound dumbbells, but right. Obviously after all that, after all that shoulder fatigue, it, it ended up really mattering. And then you see one, no rep really being the deciding factor between who won the event.

Sevan Matossian (06:17):

Okay. Point granite games, one zero granite games, zero the seven on podcast. I mean, it was that I really enjoyed that event. Um, what happened to my homeboy? Uh, Travis mayor, but before anyone starts talking there, that shit, he still in sixth place. What happened to Travis mayor? I mean, really? This was his workout. Right.

Andrew Hiller (06:41):

They have it. Okay. Uh, you would think it would be his workout. Yeah. In the past, those are workouts that are rather good for him. High rep wall ball workouts. Have you heard the story about how he did Karen on broken with a 30 pound WBA?

Sevan Matossian (06:51):

Yeah.

Taylor Self (06:52):

Yeah, but I think I was gonna say, I think he’s probably better suited for endure the sled, but we’ll see when that gets here.

Andrew Hiller (07:00):

Well, both of them really well, generally you think it would be both of them?

Sevan Matossian (07:04):

I, I don’t know if I’m feeling better. I don’t know if I’m faking it or if I feel better. I don’t know. I, I feel, I feel like shit and I’m sweating like a pig, but thank you for asking, please

Taylor Self (07:11):

Sound like crap.

Sevan Matossian (07:13):

Okay, good. Thank you. <laugh> um, I, something else everyone should know about this show, this, this is the home cooking show. What does that mean? Home cooking. That means we love who we love, because we love them for our own subjective reasons, but we try to bring objective, talk to our subjective love. That’s why that’s why the people get unfair. Um, fair. Um, and people who love the show are welcome to come on at any time. That’s why they come and go. And we had Rebecca on and Brian on and Danielle on and rich on. And James on. It’s just, it’s just a love Fest, but there is some, there is some home cooking. Uh, no, I don’t need any Vail. Thank you though. Uh, okay. Um, going back to one of yesterday’s topics before we talk about this event, uh, did you see the picture, uh, that I sent you guys to our thread? I think I sent it to the thread that in weightlifting competitions, they provide rosin.

Andrew Hiller (08:06):

I did see that.

Sevan Matossian (08:08):

Okay. Um, what are your, uh, maybe we could even upload that, Caleb, do you have, did I send that picture to, oh, thank you, brother. Um, what are your thoughts on that? Because I, I got a lot, I got some nasty DM saying, oh, um, the, the athletes aren’t responsible for the extra long rope, but they are responsible for shit on the platform and that they were saying, there’s an inconsistency there, but, but Rolin could have been, I’m assuming rolins something sticky. Right? I don’t even know what Rolin is. I just like saying it

Taylor Self (08:35):

ROS, like the shit baseball players put on their grips, the baseball bat. It’s like, it’s like a pine star pine type thing. There’s

Andrew Hiller (08:43):

They have it on like a pitchers mound and all that. The pitchers used to help grip the baseball and they’re throwing it.

Sevan Matossian (08:48):

So it’s the opposite of ail.

Taylor Self (08:51):

Yeah. It’s well,

Andrew Hiller (08:51):

You wouldn’t take it cause you’re being a baby, which is what you said. You’d need that for

Sevan Matossian (08:56):

<laugh>. Uh, okay. Well, I just wanted to throw it out there. Um, I just wanna throw it out there. I don’t even know if that’s true. If they really do provide that at weightlifting competitions, but if we’re gonna do weightlifting events at, at the CrossFit games, maybe, maybe it’s important also to follow that, that pattern also and offer up some rosin. Maybe

Andrew Hiller (09:12):

I think the biggest thing with all that is with, with the rope and the length of it, it’s just something that a lot of people know when you walk into a, an affiliates, like you look at the rope on the floor, it’s like, oh, don’t roll your ankle on that thing. It’s something you go over. When you’re going over, you have a rope line workout in the CLA it’s like, all right guys, and you’re coming down the rope. Make sure you don’t roll your ankle on it. Or you cut the ropes. Same sort of deal with the, the no, no, no gym that I’ve ever been in has had a ROSN bag there to keep the floors dry. When you’re doing any. Usually you try to keep the floors as clean as possible. You don’t throw shit on ’em to keep the, to like, keep yourself from slipping. You know what I mean? It, it’s almost like a common sensical

Sevan Matossian (09:46):

For, Hey, 12,000 wrongs. Don’t make a right Hiller. That’s not, that’s not like that’s not some sort of logic I’m gonna jump on.

Andrew Hiller (09:53):

Um,

Sevan Matossian (09:54):

Every girl in the world loves you instead of me. So you’re better looking than me. No, I’m not. That’s just, just no, no,

Andrew Hiller (10:01):

I don’t follow that one. I,

Sevan Matossian (10:02):

I know. I didn’t really follow. I didn’t follow that one either. I didn’t follow that one either. So

Andrew Hiller (10:06):

You’re sick here off.

Sevan Matossian (10:07):

I am. I hop, uh, in, uh, heat number one when Sidney Wells went, uh, chase mentioned, or Joel mentioned, I can’t remember that she has a full-time job. And I was wondering if any of you guys knew what her full-time job was. I thought that was fricking impressive.

Andrew Hiller (10:21):

Yeah. I caught that, but I don’t think they ever saw who was a full

Sevan Matossian (10:24):

Job. Sydney Wells,

Andrew Hiller (10:27):

Um, shit. Do you want me to find out?

Sevan Matossian (10:31):

Yeah. You think it’s like some sort of job? Like she’s like, it’s like

Andrew Hiller (10:35):

Part of me wants to say nurse, but I could be wrong.

Sevan Matossian (10:39):

Wait, you just go to ADP. Oh,

Andrew Hiller (10:42):

What is, what is ADP?

Taylor Self (10:45):

It’s like an online payment pro like a

Sevan Matossian (10:47):

Payroll. Wow. So she has like a real job,

Andrew Hiller (10:51):

So, oh, the comment section wins. Oh,

Sevan Matossian (10:56):

Richard. Mar did you see this guy’s name? Uh, Jr. Richard margarine.

Taylor Self (11:00):

That’s a real job, man.

Andrew Hiller (11:04):

I know you would know. Good know

Sevan Matossian (11:07):

They’re speaking of real jobs. There’s Anika Greer.

Anikha Greer (11:10):

<laugh> hi. What’s

Sevan Matossian (11:11):

That? Aika do you have a real job?

Anikha Greer (11:14):

No, I do not have a real, my only real job was coaching at my affiliate. If that even counts. Cuz that’s so fun.

Sevan Matossian (11:21):

Um, can you believe Sidney Wells is doing as well as she is and she doesn’t have, and she has a job. I mean like she has, she’s like in she’s on Lincoln with like a word, like district manager or something under her name.

Anikha Greer (11:30):

Oh, those are big girl words.

James Townsend (11:33):

She’s

Sevan Matossian (11:33):

On. Oh, someone’s got a YouTube or a radio or a TV. Someone’s got something on big

James Townsend (11:37):

Girl. Oh, someone’s got a YouTube or a radio or TV.

Andrew Hiller (11:42):

Someone’s either James or Veronica. I think

Sevan Matossian (11:44):

It’s good. It’s oh, James James taken James

James Townsend (11:49):

Me. I’m going down.

Sevan Matossian (11:50):

Okay. Hey, uh, James, I I’m gonna go back a second. We were talking, someone mentioned to me that at, uh, weightlifting, competi, uh, James meet Onika Onika meet James. I think you guys know each other. I’m a

Anikha Greer (11:59):

Big fan.

James Townsend (12:00):

Yeah. Thank you.

Sevan Matossian (12:03):

Anah had a CrossFit games, aspirations, and then they crashed and burned. We did a whole show on it. If you wanna get caught up on it. Uh, when at weightlifting competitions, someone said there’s rosin on, uh, available for the athletes to prevent that slipping. Is that something that

James Townsend (12:17):

Yeah. Under the chalk? Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (12:19):

Is that something that they should be providing you think at granite games?

James Townsend (12:24):

No.

Sevan Matossian (12:24):

Okay. Fine. Why is that? Why not? If they’re,

James Townsend (12:27):

Because how many times, you know, at, at granite games or, or any corporate event, are they using, uh, a PLA chain,

Sevan Matossian (12:36):

But, but I mean, just because they are doing it and it is being done at a high level, right. That you would want to, to, to, to mitigate the chance of injury or at least politically wise stop, um, uh, take responsibility off yourself and put it on the athletes. I guess the athletes could bring their own rosin, right?

James Townsend (12:53):

Yeah. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (12:55):

And what, what is that? You wipe it on your shoes or on the ground?

James Townsend (12:58):

No, it’s it’s it is like, it’s like when you go in here, you’re chalking up and they have this big stand and you know, on the front of your, of your lifter, the, it, it like dries up or, or, or gives you the bottom of your lift there’s grit. Okay. So when you go ahead and do your dirt, you don’t slip out.

Sevan Matossian (13:16):

So you put it on your shoes, on the bottom of your shoes, on the solar shoes, right. Have you ever used it Anika?

Anikha Greer (13:22):

No, I actually have never heard that word in my life until right now.

Sevan Matossian (13:26):

Taylor, have you used it?

Taylor Self (13:28):

You’ve never heard resin?

Sevan Matossian (13:30):

No, I could say is Rozen rosin.

Taylor Self (13:32):

It was a joke RO bay? No, I never heard, I never, well I’ve used it in baseball, but I didn’t know. They used an Olympic lifting.

Sevan Matossian (13:40):

Mr. Hiller.

Andrew Hiller (13:41):

Um, I have never used it. No.

Sevan Matossian (13:44):

Uh, Mr. Howe?

JR Howell (13:45):

No, I mean, I’ve heard of it in baseball, that’s it?

Sevan Matossian (13:47):

<laugh> okay. Time to grow across

Andrew Hiller (13:49):

It’s RO everyone everyone’s saying resin. It, I think it’s rosin. Could we hopefully Google translate thing or the pro pronunciate

Taylor Self (13:56):

You smoke resin.

Sevan Matossian (13:58):

You do. You do only.

Taylor Self (14:01):

I know about that too.

Sevan Matossian (14:02):

Only in a pinch that pinch

JR Howell (14:04):

<laugh>,

Sevan Matossian (14:06):

Uh, I impressive, impressive that, uh, Sidney, um, has a job. What do you think? What do you think Jr. Can can someone who has a full time. I mean, if she quits a job, does she do her chances grow or no, not, not yet present.

JR Howell (14:20):

Uh, I mean, you gotta eat, right? I don’t know what her situation is like financially, if she may not have that option right now, if presented with that option in the future, I would think that being able to focus the hours she spends working, be it remotely or an onsite job, she could probably use that time to, uh, train more and recover.

Sevan Matossian (14:39):

Did you work, Taylor, do you work?

Taylor Self (14:41):

Uh, I, I coach

Sevan Matossian (14:42):

And okay. And

Taylor Self (14:44):

Work, you know, a lot in an affiliate manage ish and affiliate

Sevan Matossian (14:49):

On Onika. What, how, how do you make ends meet and train?

Anikha Greer (14:53):

How do I, what, sorry,

Sevan Matossian (14:55):

How do you make ends meet and train?

Anikha Greer (14:58):

Well, luckily I have only been an adult for a year, so

Sevan Matossian (15:02):

<laugh>, I’m sorry, just

Anikha Greer (15:03):

Coming out of high school last year. I mean, I didn’t really, I wasn’t financially independent by any means. Um, but now it’s mainly through sponsors and I mean coaching, um, a bit, but when I’m like full season, I don’t coach as much cuz it, it takes a lot out of you honestly. Um, so yeah, just sponsors.

Sevan Matossian (15:20):

Yeah. Good on you and James, what do you, what do you tell your, your, your top guys is, is it a conversation you have with them? Like, Hey, we gotta figure out sponsors for you. Oh, I just saw, uh, tutor sign with a, um, a new agent, correct?

James Townsend (15:31):

Yeah. Yeah. Um, I, I, I try not to, you know, given my, uh, my last outing, I try not to, uh, um, harp on that too much for my athletes. Cause I don’t want them focusing on that. Um, you know, to, you know, once, once you get big in this sport, it can get to your head and, and make you, you know, care about the money instead of, you know, focusing on the task at hand and staying humble. So I try not to focus on that and good thing tutor, you know, he doesn’t really, you know, he has good morals and values. So the money thing is, is not a, not a standpoint.

Sevan Matossian (16:07):

So it’ll just come put in the work, um, assign it to someone you trust on your team and let it come.

James Townsend (16:12):

That’s it.

Sevan Matossian (16:13):

Okay. Fair enough. Uh, yesterday we had Daniel, Brandon on the show for a short minute and she showed her, uh, ferocity as a competitor. And I didn’t see the comments, but some, I guess there were some comments where people took some shots at her. Hey, look, Hey look, man. The fact that you care means that you are a fan. The fact that you’re saying you’re not a fan means that you are a fan. And we all know that. And we know she’s adding value to the game by those shots she fired because she got you to react and make a comment. So just sit back, enjoy the show, getting angry, get angry, but accept the fact that you’re angry and it’s fun. Enjoy it. Stay in the big picture and just realize she’s a fierce competitor. And we have a new character in the game. Anika. She’s a character, right? What’d you say?

Anikha Greer (17:04):

I said facts. Yes. A hundred

Sevan Matossian (17:06):

Percent facts. Facts. Facts. Yeah. Yeah. And, and, and uh, and there, there was a I’ll tell, I’ll tell you a little story. Um, Daniel, Brandon is, is, is a giant wave. If you stay close to it, you’re safe. If you stay far away from it, you’re safe. If you stay in the break, you’re fucked up. So either get on the Danielle, Brandon train or fucking run for the mountains. But if you’re one of those, if you’re one of her competitors, you’re in the break and like you you’re going, there’s gonna be, there’s gonna be violence. There’s gonna be ways

James Townsend (17:35):

Breaking is Tia in the break.

Sevan Matossian (17:38):

Uh, no, not yet. Tia’s has, has run off. Uh, I don’t know where Tia’s gone. <laugh> Tia’s surfing the top of the way Tia’s surfing. Danielle did, did you see the, the little thing

Andrew Hiller (17:48):

I made that kind cut that and made it so everybody could see it. First

Sevan Matossian (17:51):

Friend. Yeah. What

Andrew Hiller (17:53):

It, it brought up that, the conversation that we’re talking about, where it’s like, she Daniel kinda like put her foot in the grounds. Like here I am. And she kinda like made her voice heard. I think that’s what we’re talking about. Isn’t it? She pissed on the carpet.

Sevan Matossian (18:04):

No, the, the, the thing with the no reps, the, I hope I wanna see the big girls get no reps or something. Wasn’t it? That comment. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay. No,

Andrew Hiller (18:11):

No, no. Mine was in relation to the hair. You were talking about the hair. Oh, okay. I misunderstood the, the one you were talking about. Oh

Sevan Matossian (18:17):

Yeah, yeah. That one was good too. Oh, so Rebecca made a rebuttal to that.

Andrew Hiller (18:21):

No, I just kind of brought it up and they were, they were talking in the comments on a real that I made on Instagram and it was cordial. It was good stuff. They understood that like what was going on? And it wasn’t like screwing you. Fuck you.

Sevan Matossian (18:33):

Okay. Good, Mr. Friend. Hi.

Brian Friend (18:35):

Sorry about that.

Sevan Matossian (18:37):

No, no, no. I thought, I thought I, I, I’m glad you’re trying.

Brian Friend (18:41):

I got a phone call editor.

Sevan Matossian (18:43):

Uh, how is, uh, how is, um, uh, Bri, Mr. Bakowski? He had a tremendous run. I mean, what, what a push. He looked like a beast out there, but then we saw some video of him going up the stairs and he looked wounded to say the least

Brian Friend (18:57):

Just a tough workout. I mean, you heard about Phil th said, and he looked good finishing and still said he felt terrible. So I think that’s tough one. And everyone knew that about granny came hiss are really, really demand.

Sevan Matossian (19:13):

Also will plumber reported to us that Chandler had to be, um, helped by two medics off the field. Is he okay?

Brian Friend (19:22):

I haven’t heard anything yet, but that look good. I mean, obviously I saw him float on the workout, but I think it was more than that. I mean, he didn’t look like himself yesterday, not just his performance, but he just don’t seem to have the usual like excitement or enthusiasm that, that some people sometimes he’s had. So I don’t know. I just don’t think maybe he’s not feeling well to begin with, but then you start having bad performance, even if you’ve been around for a while, just, you know, you can get down on. So I just hope he’s okay. But I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the last time him.

Sevan Matossian (19:53):

No shit like that.

Brian Friend (19:57):

I’ll

Sevan Matossian (19:58):

Um, you

Brian Friend (19:58):

Know, this next, event’s not that easy either. If he’s not feeling well, like, I don’t know. And he is already, you know, he is probably not in a contending position, so it reminds me of what happened to Ricky Gerard, but that was, you know, that was workout one. He still had a good finish. So he had a reason to come back and fight for it. If feels like he’s out the fight and something is wrong at all, maybe he will not risk it.

Sevan Matossian (20:18):

Uh, I don’t, I, uh, Travis, he didn’t get carried. He didn’t get carried off. Uh, he didn’t get carried off. Uh, he was just, he just had two medics help him off. Help

Brian Friend (20:29):

Him off Travis higher?

Sevan Matossian (20:31):

Uh, no, no, no. Travis bros. Just, just some, just some random dude on here. Oh, where’s your good headphones? Brian did, did they get left on in your other bag?

Brian Friend (20:40):

Oh, maybe it’s not. Uh, no, I just, this is what I have when I’m walking around right

Sevan Matossian (20:46):

Now. Okay. When, uh, when we talked about this workout, we, we, we, well, we, this, this show is just, I have these guys on my show are just always talking shit about workouts and, and just talking shit about the events and blah, blah, blah. I don’t wanna name names. I, I, I think those guys all have to eat Crow. I think that was a brilliant workout. And even I thought those last 10 reps would be stupid. And I thought that was brilliant. Um, and the fact that we’re seeing people like Phil tune, hurting OWS down, Chandler Smith, getting Cod, and yet still finishing in the time cap, I’m loving it. I’m loving it. Do you have any comments? Yeah,

Brian Friend (21:27):

I don’t know. I, I like, I like both the workouts today because I think there’s a good balance between, uh, you know, strength. You can Excel on the wall balls and the stuff, but what are you gonna do when you come to the, and this afternoon, the same thing with the barbell. I actually watch some of the master athletes do this, uh, test our workout this morning. And you saw people exchanging the lead. Some guys would talk to barber and comes, stop on the pull up and then, you know, see how they hang out in the back. So I kinda like the workouts like that, where you get a little bit of gymnastics, little bit of weight lifting. Who’s the best at management

Sevan Matossian (21:59):

Taylor, would you argue that there should have been a 20 minute time cap so that would’ve made you feel better?

Taylor Self (22:04):

No, no. I like the workouts by themselves. The whole point is that there’s only six workouts and four of them are the same.

Sevan Matossian (22:12):

Fair fair. Okay. Okay. Fair fair. That’s

Taylor Self (22:16):

A generalization. And that’s why Brian’s laughing because I’m, I’m making a fast generalization,

Sevan Matossian (22:21):

But, but I understand what you’re saying it’s in, but it stops my point. It’s a great rebuttal to my point. It’s not the workouts in particular. You’re against, it’s just them being used to determine who goes onto the games in conjunction with one another over these three days.

Brian Friend (22:35):

What is, uh, what does Anika think about that?

Anikha Greer (22:40):

Thanks, Brian. <laugh> um, I don’t know. I, uh, I think this last work is, uh, a big medley of move. I kinda looked at it first. I was like, so what are the best thing other than pain? Um, but I mean, I could agree with when you only have six, what you test you would wanna test. Um, I’m not incredibly familiar with like the rest of the work for the weekend, to be honest, but, so I guess I don’t really have that valid of an opinion if I don’t really know the rest of the workouts, but I do think this last workout was definitely just kind of a medley of a lot of movements and it was just kind of like who can hurt and yeah. 10, well, both. Yeah. Like that’s a, that’s a lot of movements. Yeah. I mean, I think it’s, it would be like a, a good workout to do. I’m sure it’s really hard, but it’s kind of like, what specifically are they testing there?

Sevan Matossian (23:41):

Yeah. I, I don’t even understand that question, but that’s a question that these guys like Jr. Howell and, and Taylor and Hiller throw around a lot. What are they testing? I don’t know. They’re testing most wall balls, the fastest

Taylor Self (23:51):

Capacity. And then also there’s 30 muscle ups in there. So that’s, there’s definitely some gymnastics skill. Um, right. But they’re also not testing.

JR Howell (23:59):

Yeah. I mean, they’re showing there’s

Brian Friend (24:02):

Why do you insult Jr. By grouping them in with those guys?

Sevan Matossian (24:05):

<laugh> it just happens. It just happens. It just happens.

JR Howell (24:08):

So there’s a, you know, there’s shoulder interference in every single movement other than the G D they went overhead in event one, they went overhead in event two, they went overhead this event and they’re going overhead again with the snatches for 32 reps. So in general, I mean the first four workouts being really, really shoulder intensive, it’s gonna be interesting to see how the snatches go for a lot of those guys and then workouts five and six don’t have anything overhead.

Anikha Greer (24:35):

I mean,

Brian Friend (24:37):

I got one more, one more question. If you want, then I gotta go. Otherwise,

Sevan Matossian (24:40):

Uh, are you happy with Colton? Mertons

Brian Friend (24:44):

Very happy. I think that he did really well on that workout. The men’s field tighten up a bit. Um, but he’s right in the mix. So I think he’s probably gonna be good on his next one. And then it’s all gonna be about, uh, the last day for himself. I think he’ll be happy with that too,

Sevan Matossian (24:58):

Probably. Okay. And can you check in on Travis Mayer? I’d like to know if like something’s wrong.

Brian Friend (25:03):

That was surprising. I thought you would’ve a top five finish at worst on that work. I think you finished 14th or something like that. It’s not terrible, but I don’t think you can afford another one that bad. Damn.

JR Howell (25:13):

Okay. If I,

Brian Friend (25:14):

If I hear, if I get a chance to talk to him or max, I’ll let

Sevan Matossian (25:16):

You know. Okay. Tell chase and Joel, they’re killing it. Um, we’re we’re loving it. We’re loving it. Thank you. Will do. Yep. Thanks.

Andrew Hiller (25:24):

Whoa, whoa, whoa,

Taylor Self (25:25):

Fuck. <laugh> what were you gonna ask him, please?

Andrew Hiller (25:29):

If he’s changed his yeah, of course. No swearing on the show. Has, has he changed his opinion on Phil tune yet? Does he think he’s gonna beat Justin Madera with the CrossFit games?

Taylor Self (25:36):

No. Mm dude. It just depends on the, it just there’s running and swimming and riding a bike.

Andrew Hiller (25:42):

And there’s Phil tune and Phil tune,

Sevan Matossian (25:45):

Man, he looked good. He looks good. He

Andrew Hiller (25:47):

Just beat front F Kowski and a chipper. When are you guys

Sevan Matossian (25:49):

Gonna start? How bad is Phil tune? Swimming. Taylor, how bad is

Taylor Self (25:52):

It? I’m so broke, but ill take, you would, I will take out a big bet against you, Andrew on Justin versus Phil at the games.

Andrew Hiller (25:59):

Fine.

Sevan Matossian (26:00):

Who’s I gotta,

Andrew Hiller (26:00):

I gotta have, I gotta have odds though, because Justin already won once and Phil tune’s coming outta nowhere.

Sevan Matossian (26:05):

Who’s better. Patrick, Patrick ner or, uh, Phil tune at swimming.

JR Howell (26:10):

Ner

Taylor Self (26:11):

ER’s better. Vener is better than tune. And that’s what I’m saying. <laugh> that’s the whole point.

Sevan Matossian (26:17):

I’m gonna say

Taylor Self (26:17):

That’s such a good dude, but man, you,

Andrew Hiller (26:19):

What does ANCA think? Anika? Who’s who’s in win the games this year.

Sevan Matossian (26:23):

Oh please.

Anikha Greer (26:24):

Justin.

Sevan Matossian (26:25):

I mean, thank you Anika in

Andrew Hiller (26:26):

The, I I know. I just like to take a, you know, a stance that isn’t quite the typical,

Anikha Greer (26:32):

I, I think in the next couple of years, there’ll definitely be some guys that that will, will be pushing for it, but I don’t think they’re quite there this year.

Andrew Hiller (26:41):

You know? Well, I think Danny Spiegel’s in a beat Tia to me. So king of the hot takes

James Townsend (26:46):

You really?

Andrew Hiller (26:48):

No, I don’t. <laugh> she

James Townsend (26:51):

Said to you really?

Sevan Matossian (26:52):

I wanna ask, I wanna ask all you guys. I wanna ask you guys all a question. Um, what is, um, can, if I say how many pullups can you always do? So if you were to break, if I said, Hey, you have to do pullups for, uh, 20 minutes, or let’s say 30 minutes. What, what? And you had to choose a set and just keep doing that set for 30 minutes, with little breaks. What sets would you choose? Taylor

Andrew Hiller (27:13):

By seven? What kind of pullups strict?

Sevan Matossian (27:15):

Just pull up. Just any kind? Any, yeah, any kind. You gotta

Andrew Hiller (27:18):

Be more,

Sevan Matossian (27:19):

Okay. Let’s say strict. Let’s say strict pull up. Oh, strict

Andrew Hiller (27:21):

Pull ups.

James Townsend (27:25):

5, 4, 10, 10.

Andrew Hiller (27:25):

Are we trying to get as many as we can in a half hour?

Sevan Matossian (27:28):

No. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Andrew Hiller (27:30):

Five, four. I would do triples every 30 seconds for a half hour.

Sevan Matossian (27:36):

Yeah. I’d probably do something like that too. I’d do three, four or five. Definitely not 10. Um, Onika how many?

Anikha Greer (27:41):

I said one but

Sevan Matossian (27:43):

One. Okay. Fair, fair. Uh, Jamestown 10. I heard Maow because that comes outta my mouth sometimes. Like, like you could wake me up, hit me with the Badd as hard as you can. And I can do three pullups like, there’s just, I, I do three pullups for my grave. You could dig me out. Three pulls are just nothing. And when she said in her post interview, I broke my Ms. Mall. O’Brien said this, I, I can always do five muscle ups. I was just like,

Anikha Greer (28:10):

Yeah, I get that.

Sevan Matossian (28:12):

You do get that.

James Townsend (28:13):

Yeah. Know,

Sevan Matossian (28:15):

Tell me, tell me James, go.

James Townsend (28:18):

It’s something. I mean, that’s that, that’s clearly something, you know, I always, always like to say to my athletes is that, you know, you can do five. You can always that’s to me always know you can do five. When you on ring mus or, or borrow subs, you can always push five, like five. Is, is that comfortable number that you can do? So,

Sevan Matossian (28:40):

So you tell her that. So if you had an athlete who said three, you’d be like, no, you can always do five. You put that in them. You make them

James Townsend (28:45):

Believe three here. You can get to

Sevan Matossian (28:46):

Five. Yeah. That’s impressive. What do you think, Anika? What were you gonna say? You can always do five muscles too.

Anikha Greer (28:52):

I a hundred percent, like if I have a big set of muscle ups, I don’t know why I’m more confident in my ring muscles than I am strict pull ups clearly. But like, I just, if there’s a big set of muscle ups and I start with something big, like I know I can always go back to fives and I’ll be fine. Like if it’s sets of fives and a workout, I’m like P like that’s basically rest, cuz you only have to do five. Like it’s five’s such a comfortable number. I do.

Sevan Matossian (29:14):

I guess I don’t I’ve I don’t, I’ve never done tipping muscle up. So I, I guess, I don’t know. But man, that, that just seems nuts to me. How, how many did you, what does five sound like a lot to you? Hiller? Can you always do five,

Andrew Hiller (29:25):

Five muscle ups? Oh yeah,

Sevan Matossian (29:26):

Yeah. Oh

Andrew Hiller (29:27):

Yeah. I could probably do ’em right now and I can’t even straighten my arm.

Sevan Matossian (29:30):

Um, Mr. Crash, cross you guys. You, you, none of you guys are impressed by that. You’re not impressed by that either. Jr. It’s just like, yeah, you gotta be able to always do five.

Andrew Hiller (29:38):

Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (29:39):

Mr. Self. Well, fuck. Thanks for ruining the show. Okay. Um, Danny Spiegel strong work. Pardon me? You getting text messages? Is that you? Oh yeah. Sorry. No, it’s okay. I’m just curious what yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, sorry. Sorry. I love this shit. You’re yelling. People are texting me, telling me that I look like I’m gonna die.
