Sevan Matossian (00:00):

So Bam we’re live Is that, um, a fashion is you got some sort of fashion error going,

Brian Friend (00:12):

Sevan Matossian (00:13):

You got like red and red. Are you allowed to do that?

Brian Friend (00:19):

Come on man.

Mattew Ouza (00:19):

Fashion police.

Sevan Matossian (00:23):

Hi guys. Good evening. 6:30 PM. On the Pacific.

Brian Friend (00:29):

I thought you were talking to Matt. I don’t know what you’re even talking

Sevan Matossian (00:31):

About. No, Matt, Matt got a new zombie. Matt, Matt wears whatever’s free that sent to him.

Brian Friend (00:35):

No, I thought you were gonna find out, follow that up with like a joke or compliment out wa zombie. I didn’t even realize you were talking to him.

Mattew Ouza (00:40):

I thought that’s what was happen it too.

Sevan Matossian (00:43):

Um, Do, did you guys see that video that, um, um, um, Andrew Hiller made today about Christian Harris?

Brian Friend (00:52):

Brian Friend (00:53):

Sevan Matossian (00:54):

We made a video about Christian Harris basically about Christian Harris. I, I dunno if I liked his deduction deduction. He basically least, I guess he took a quote from the podcast where I interviewed Christian. Harrison said, you know who Andrew Hiller is? And, um, Christian Harris said no. And then Andrew Hiller said that. Well, he, he either, either, I can’t remember what he said, but it was two choices. It was either this or that. And I’m thinking to myself, I don’t know if it’s just this or that. Maybe there’s a couple of things, but once again, it was as long. I mean, as long as he never makes a video like that about me, it’s fucking great. Like I thought it was good. I just was the whole time being like, I don’t know. I thought maybe like poor Christian Harris, but I don’t think he didn’t say anything bad about Christian Harris. But one of the things he was commenting about Christian Harris was, is that Christian Harris was to promote his clothing brand was just like carpet bombing, semi semifinal athletes saying, Hey, um, you guys wanna wear my gear? And I’m thinking to myself, shit that’s and, and Hiller didn’t like that. Like he thought that that was just lame. But, but then, but really all it does spark my head and like, oh shit, I, I need to like,

Brian Friend (01:58):

We need to bomb athlete.

Sevan Matossian (02:00):

Yeah, I’m gonna, I’m gonna pay Taylor self and Colton Merton’s fucking 10 grand each to fucking wear my, uh, Seon podcast. Like CEO shirts at semifinals

Mattew Ouza (02:11):

10 grand.

Brian Friend (02:11):

Sevan Matossian (02:12):

No, I just completely made that up. So people will think we’re big timing, Sean. I gonna give him a handy and beg, But, but, but anyway, so, but so I watched the, and um, so he, so he didn’t like, he, he didn’t like that. And then

Brian Friend (02:31):

Really, I thought he would’ve appreciated you watching.

Sevan Matossian (02:34):

No, no, no, no. I may. No, I’m sure he likes the numbers of, um, of me watching, but he didn’t like the fact that Christian Harris was just like carpet bombing people trying to get people. And then people were out it’s

Brian Friend (02:43):

Like some people are willing to wear the shirt for 10.

Sevan Matossian (02:46):

Well, no, I think Christian you, right? I think Christian Harris was just saying, Hey, well, I, I don’t know how the deal worked. I don’t wanna get complicated. But then basically people in the comments were like, yeah, this person offered it to me and this person offered it. Oh

Brian Friend (02:57):

Sevan Matossian (02:59):

That’s a live calling show Justin from Utah. What you need?

Mattew Ouza (03:04):

Are we just taking

Sevan Matossian (03:05):

Calls? I don’t know. Oh, hold on Justin. Hold on. This better. Be good. How’s your better be real good. Justin. How’s your sister.

Justin (03:14):

Um, she’s good. I don’t know you don’t anything about my sister, but anyway, um, I’m an affiliate owner, so I have to add one piece.

Sevan Matossian (03:22):

That was a little bumpy. That was a little bumpy. Our start, but go on. That was a little bumpy.

Justin (03:27):

OK. Uh, I have to have, add one piece to like what what’s happening with the, um, approval score thing that I think CrossFit screwed up this year with, um,

Sevan Matossian (03:37):

This is a power ranking show. I think you’re like eight hours.

Justin (03:41):

I know I’m I’m late, but I missed the live. So I appreciate

Sevan Matossian (03:44):

That’s a problem with the affiliates. They they’re just so entitled.

Justin (03:49):

Sevan Matossian (03:49):

OK. He knows. He knows the second. He says it’s an affiliate. I’ll drop to one knee and be like, yes, Justin, tell me what can I do for you? Well,

Justin (03:56):

Last time I, last time I called in everyone’s giving me shit. I didn’t drop my affiliates. Name

Sevan Matossian (04:01):

Is your funniest name. I I’m, you know, I love it. That you’re calling by the way, what

Justin (04:06):

ISY hive salty hive CrossFit in salt lake city,

Sevan Matossian (04:10):

Salty hive sounds like an ex-girlfriend of mine. Salty hive. Okay. Tell us what you have. You have 20 of what is happen.

Justin (04:23):

Hopefully he, and, and I would assume that he knows this, but in past years, every score that came out of affiliates needed to be approved by the affiliate manager, which is most often the case, the affiliate owner. So you would have a judge, a judge would take the course and they do all that, but it would still come across the affiliate manager’s approval. And so CrossFit got rid of that this year. Like, all you needed to do was submit a score with an approved judge. And it was immediately on the leaderboard, which is cool. I like the immediate thing. But before that score becomes official, I think that one more level of approved letting the affiliate manager approve those scores would have maybe gotten rid of a lot of controversy in the open and in the quarter finals. And I don’t know why they got rid of that. I think it’s silly. I there’s a lot of instances where I wish I could have gone through that process. Uh, one of my athletes, and this is, this is not necessarily what most people are interested in, but submitted as, as scaled instead of RX, like just a small example like that. And those are things that I missed because, because I didn’t come across my board as soon as, or didn’t come across my desk. As soon as somebody submit the score and put an approved judge, it’s immediately approved on the leaderboard and they

Sevan Matossian (05:53):

Talk about shit, go on Justin, sorry, someone in the comment said, time’s up. You’re like, it’s the fucking gong show. You just got gone by one of the fucking judges. Anyway, You’re getting fucked up in the comment. Hey guys, settle down. This is affiliate fucking start banning you motherfuckers. Yeah.

Justin (06:15):

I’m not gonna, I’m not take offense to anything that anyone says, right?

Sevan Matossian (06:19):

Hey, I, you, I think that totally that’s a mistake to do that. They should totally have left the affiliates in there. The someone in there, an approval manager. I’m totally okay with that. I’m a hundred, a hundred percent. And I would be very curious why they removed that. What piece of friction did that remove? You know what? I think that removed, I think that removed fucking

Brian Friend (06:38):

Stevan. The reason that they did it is because they wanted to be Able to include, they wanted to be able to include people who may live in parts of the world that still don’t have open affiliates.

Sevan Matossian (06:50):

There’s a,

Brian Friend (06:52):

I don’t know if those places exist or not, but they thought that it could potentially,

Sevan Matossian (06:59):

Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God.

Mattew Ouza (07:03):

Brent. We love you. We love you Bryan.

Sevan Matossian (07:06):

Oh my goodness. Sorry, Justin. Brent OWS. We just, everyone just keeps getting big dicked. We’ve got Brian. I big dicked. You Brian, big Dick. Me and Brent. Kowski big Dick Brian. That was fucking money ever it. OK. OK. What do you think about that, Justin? I’m gonna give you, I’m gonna give you 20 seconds to respond to Brian’s. Cause I fucked that leave the power in the offense,

Justin (07:26):

Hand the point, the point that, well, I agree. The point that Brian makes, I think is legitimate. However, if that athlete did it at my affiliate, I wanna approve it. Whether I judge them or one of my coaches judge them. If that score was submitted at my affiliate, I wanna be the last one to approve that score. And that’s just me.

Sevan Matossian (07:45):

Fair enough. I agree.

Justin (07:47):

So if my affiliate, if my affiliate closed, cool, like I appreciate their consideration to be inclusive. But if that affiliate also well in my, my affiliates open, so score that went through on the leaderboard. I wanted to be the last one to approve it. And that’s just my point of view. I think it was a stupid thing they got rid of. I think the other thing they, the only reason they got rid of it is the scores immediately were uploaded on the leaderboard in the open, not the core final. And I just think that that’s silly, but they still could have popped on the leader board. But if the affiliate manager or owner, whoever that person is, doesn’t approve it by the, that final date. Then it’s not an official score.

Sevan Matossian (08:29):

Thank you. And I’m flattered. You keep my phone number on your speed dial. Thank you, Justin.

Justin (08:34):

Peace in love. Peace

Sevan Matossian (08:36):

Mattew Ouza (08:36):

Love. Peace in love. Also who approves this message is athletic 360 degrees gut brush.

Sevan Matossian (08:42):

Oh my goodness. Brent, Brent Kowski is funny. Shit. God,

Mattew Ouza (08:49):

That was awesome. Is that really him?

Sevan Matossian (08:51):

I, I don’t think I would honestly say it’s not, but you, you never know. You never know. Um, some, some, uh, um, someone said this, uh, someone opening up with the bat with, with the bat talk. Yeah. Got it. Every show. Well, I just watched it. Well,

Mattew Ouza (09:09):

He is our new sponsor, so

Sevan Matossian (09:10):

I didn’t, I only made it to 13 minutes. He’s a sponsor. Yeah. Yeah. Guys will soon realize that Andrew Hiller’s sponsor of this show,

Mattew Ouza (09:17):

He, his sponsor of the show.

Sevan Matossian (09:18):

We pay him to make content to the, we have something to talk about.

Sevan Matossian (09:24):

Um, God, that would be brilliant. What if we paid? Oh my God. I just got this great idea. Oh, can you bring up that video, his video and, and then we’ll move on to the power rankings. I’m super excited to see what’s what’s changed. Um, but, but there, but I think he used a word wrong and I just, I just wanna clarify. If you go to like the 10, 20 and hit play, he uses the word, uh, promiscuous here. I don’t think he means promiscuous. I think he means risque. So let me, let me, but I, and I like both those words. They’re both in my, um, in my wheelhouse of expertise.

Mattew Ouza (09:56):

Sevan Matossian (09:56):

Here we go. Okay. Let’s do it. Brian, listen

Speaker 8 (10:02):

Speaker 9 (10:03):

I’m just got warmed up. This is VLAs with shit. Total

Speaker 10 (10:08):

Meet max, max.

Sevan Matossian (10:11):

Mattew Ouza (10:14):

Fucking more.

Speaker 8 (10:14):

So this athlete would post some, I guess you can call him is photos that are profile on their Instagram profile. They’re post the promiscuous photos, women empowerment sort of thing. 30 or 40,000 followers at the time has more than that now. And this is actually a story that I heard a while back. So in the time in which this athlete was posting these photos that were promiscuous, you could say, okay, stop. They’ve been it’s

Sevan Matossian (10:35):

It’s risque. It’s risque R sq E que promiscuous means like there’d be photos of taking the, yeah.

Brian Friend (10:42):

How important is this?

Sevan Matossian (10:44):

Lemme just finish and then we’ll move on. Powering. Absolutely important. Promiscuous would be like, if she’s taking the Dick, she wasn’t taking the Dick Hiller, multiple multiples, multiple dicks. Thank you. Making we made air tight. Oh,

Brian Friend (10:55):

Lemme ask you this. Remember the picture of James Newberry we saw this morning? Yes. Is that promiscuous risky or neither.

Sevan Matossian (11:01):

It turned promiscuous between my ears very quickly, but the actual photo was just, uh, that wasn’t even risque. That was just sexy. Okay. Anyway, that’s just free advice. Critiquing the critiquer. And this is this show. This show should be called, getting big dicked. Everyone’s just getting big. Oh goodness. Hey and Travis. You asshole. I see you comment on his thread and fucking moving him up in the algorithm. The dude put on 2000 more subscribers yesterday. He’s gonna pass this by tomorrow morning. Knock that shit off 21st.

Mattew Ouza (11:28):

Slow it down guys. Yes. Less engagement please. Dude.

Sevan Matossian (11:33):

He’s gonna start losing more subscribers in a day than we gain in a day. He’s gonna get so big, so fast. Okay. Slightly indecent and liable to shock, especially by being sexually suggestive. Yeah, I think he meant risk. Oh, there’s a little thing over the E

Brian Friend (11:47):

Sevan Matossian (11:50):

Okay. Uh, what are the power rankings? What are the power rankings before we get into ’em?

Brian Friend (11:58):

Well, uh, prior to the season, I, I did, uh, power rankings for 10 athletes and mentioned a couple others who I thought were close to the top 10 of just the athletes that I thought were most likely to be. You know, the people in the way, if you are trying to do well at the games podium, top five, top 10, those are the type of people you’d have to beat. And, you know, just like in any other, uh, power rankings. So, you know, if I had to decide between two athletes, the one I put ahead is the one I would think would have a better chance of doing better at the course of the season, which means that the games when, when those come around. So that’s generally how I think about it. And now that we’ve had the open and the quarter finals done, we have some more information about some athletes and we’ve expanded to 20. Uh, so we’ve got a list of 20 men and 20 women.

Sevan Matossian (12:42):

Okay. Could, what could I say that these are your prediction of who like at this moment, at this time on April 4th, at 6:45 PM, who you’re predicting is gonna go to the games and they’re gonna finish in this order. Could that be a fun way of saying it?

Brian Friend (12:56):

Not necessarily, because for example, or we’ll see that there are four women from ocean on this list. We know they can get three qualifying spots. Now, presumably one of ’em could still, or a back Chan a back last chance qualifier. And then there could be four of them at the games, but the last chance qualifier is pretty tough. It was only are tests. And if one of ’em, again is a max deadlift test or something similar, then it’s kind of anyone, you know, you don’t know who’s gonna make it out of there. Those 30 athletes are all obviously very good. They were very close to making it to the games just to get into that field. So there’s no real guarantee that all 20 of these athletes will even get to the games depending on how hard the qualifying process is in their continent.

Sevan Matossian (13:33):

Okay. Very well, plane. Uh, gimme one second. And then I promise I’ll stop with the Hiller is renting space in seven’s head for free. No, no, no, no, no, no

Mattew Ouza (13:42):

Renting space on the podcast for a premium price.

Sevan Matossian (13:44):

I think it’s Hiller is in seven’s head rent free. It’s it’s not he’s he, he he’s at renting space and then it’s free fucking R PJ 4, 3 0 7. And just so you know, Hiller’s in my pants, settle down on there, buddy. He’s nowhere. He is not in my head. He’s in my pants. I’m gonna pay for that shit. He’s gonna be where I want him to be.

Mattew Ouza (14:06):

All right. And, and for the rest of you guys, you could go to barbell jobs.com and check him out there.

Sevan Matossian (14:11):

He’s renting space, inev ons, head for free. I mean, I, I appreciate the attempt I do. I do.

Mattew Ouza (14:18):

You must be foreign.

Sevan Matossian (14:19):

You, you need to rent some IQ points. Yeah. That’s probably that is foreign talk. Okay. Okay. Sorry. Okay. So I like this, I like this and that. And that’s a good distinction. Um, would it be fair to say that once the power we get, do the power rankings after the semi-finals that what I said could be a little closer to the truth. It’s just a really, really early guess of who’s gonna go to the games and how they’re gonna finish.

Brian Friend (14:39):

Sure. But you know, the, the thing is in the run up to the games, uh, we don’t know what’s gonna happen this year. You know, they, you know, they might choose to release more workouts or less workouts. And so depending on the information we have, sometimes that can change, but yeah, after we have all the semifinals done, including last chance, qualifier, this will be about a month of the games. And then we can actually narrow the field down to 40 and 40 and say, you know, this is what’s most likely, I guess.

Sevan Matossian (15:03):

Okay. And just like the open workouts were released on this show and the quarter final workouts were released on the show, the CrossFit HQ will be using the show to release the, uh, semifinal games, workouts. Uh, Brian and I will be in charge of that And maybe rich Fring and Dave, and just whoever wants to jump on. Okay. Yeah, I am fired up tonight. I’m pretty, I had a list, a couple Listerine strips. All righty. Um, okay. Let’s do it. Let’s do it. So, so why 20 Brian? Why not? Why not? 10 didn’t we do 10 last time. 10 men and 10 women.

Brian Friend (15:43):

Yeah. So, uh, just thought that expanding it to 20 would be a little paint, a little better, better picture than 10 there’s definite more than 10 athletes on each side that are worth mentioning on this list and that have potential to, you know, be inside the top 10, uh, when everything’s said and done, uh, additionally, something that I did different that you’ll be able to see on the morning, chalk up, uh, whenever the article comes out, it might be tomorrow or Wednesday is that I reached out to four other experts in the field and we did a composite power ranking. So here we’ll just talk about mine, but we will mention athletes that were listed that were ranked on those four experts lists that weren’t on mine. Um, and, uh, as part of the show tonight also, and then you can see it’s actually, I think it’s much better when you have a group of people cuz you can, you, there’s more, more to talk about and you have an opportunity to say like, how come this was included on these three and not this one. And then you can kind of also get to see like a congregation where the composite rankings might be really close. Like for example, the eight, nine and 10 on the women’s side, after five people had ranked ’em all where 9.6, 9.8 9.8. So you can say, oh, interesting to see how tightly grouped these three athletes are when five opinions are factored in instead of one.

Sevan Matossian (16:55):

Um, can you tell me who the other four are? That’ll they’ll be talking. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. Go ahead. And, and this is coming in the morning chalk either tomorrow or Wednesday. And when you say composite, it’s actually all of your lists smooshed together.

Brian Friend (17:07):

Yeah. So like for, you know, for example it

Sevan Matossian (17:09):

Not, you debating it’s it’s them all together. Yeah.

Brian Friend (17:11):

They all sent me their rankings. It was uh, myself, Tommy marque, Patrick Clark, chase Ingram. And Chad Schrader

Sevan Matossian (17:20):

Short, uh, sorry, sorry. Say, say it again. I heard Chad and chase. Who else?

Brian Friend (17:24):

Tommy and Patrick.

Sevan Matossian (17:25):

Patrick, uh, Patrick. Uh, okay. Okay. That’s the, um, Patrick Clark is the morning chalk up. He’s the editor over there?

Brian Friend (17:34):

No, he’s one of the analysts, photographers kind of does a, does a, does a lot of different things for them.

Sevan Matossian (17:41):

Okay. And Tommy is a, just a se a senior contributor over there.

Brian Friend (17:44):

Sevan Matossian (17:45):

And he has the talking elite podcast and chase. Everyone knows who chase has been around forever. L one staff, uh, prior games athlete and has, uh, get with the programming, um, podcast.

Brian Friend (17:55):

And he is in the chat

Sevan Matossian (17:57):

And Chad Schroeder, who knows more than anyone, but has zero credentials. Okay. That’s

Brian Friend (18:04):

Sevan Matossian (18:05):

I mean the guys, I, everyone who knows Chad Schroeder knows I’m yeah. Yeah. He’s the, he’s the fucking guy. I mean, we all, everyone uses Chad he’s the door.

Brian Friend (18:14):

When I, when I, when I first started, I was traveling with you to the regionals in 2018. Everyone I met who realized what I kind of knew. They’re like, you have to meet Chad, you have to meet Chad. I mean, it was everyone who knew him was like, you gotta meet this guy. He’s the guy.

Sevan Matossian (18:26):

Yeah. He’s he’s man. He fucking put togethers some shit. Okay. So these are just your 20 and just outta curiosity, how, how far, how was, was there, were there any just crazy outliers between um, Chad chase, Tommy and Patrick and yourself? Were there any, just like, holy shit, what do you, how did that person get on there?

Brian Friend (18:45):

There was some interesting things. Yeah. Like there was an athlete, there was ranked 12th, 12th, 10th, and 13. And then the fifth person didn’t have that person on their list at all. So that would be like kind of strange. And then there were, you know, there were,

Sevan Matossian (18:57):

Uh, who was it? Was it, was it Christie Ramo got left off.

Brian Friend (19:00):

Nope. Karin David’s daughter.

Sevan Matossian (19:02):

No shit.

Brian Friend (19:04):

Sevan Matossian (19:05):

No shit. Who, who can you tell me? Who left off?

Brian Friend (19:08):

Oh, at least some things in the suspense for you.

Sevan Matossian (19:11):

I did not. Will that be, will that be, um, so will that be in the article? We’ll know who left off? Yes. Are they single? I, I think I’m, I’m single and ready to mingle. Who is that? I’m ready to date. Ready to date date. I met chase randomly when dropping into his box in Dallas. You’re a good human brother.

Mattew Ouza (19:32):

I felt like that icon pick. I was kid, but I thought it was of him a dangerous snatch to be doing naked.

Sevan Matossian (19:40):

Yeah. Okay. I’m pumped. And uh, and, and anyone else, anyone else? Trippy? Um, Christie is the one that you called me afterwards. You’re like, what did I do right after the power rankings you were like, yeah,

Brian Friend (19:51):

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, not, not having her in the top 10 is, um, I was like, ah, she’s definitely close to top 10, but I didn’t even include her in the barely missed. And I realized after the fact I was like, that was just a total oversight. So don’t worry. We got her on tonight.

Sevan Matossian (20:06):

Uh, San CLE. I, I don’t think Khalifa is, um, he’s not so much a game Zita. He’s not so much a game Z. Maybe even less than me. He’s a CrossFit east. He, he knows he knows CrossFit, but I don’t think like modern day games, athletes are, are his

Mattew Ouza (20:20):

Business fitness.

Sevan Matossian (20:22):

Yeah. Chase is a good dude to drop in on. Yep. I hear you deep drop in deep. Okay. Let’s do it. Uh, men or women, do you have a preference?

Brian Friend (20:32):

No, but I think it probably let’s pull up the preseason top 10 and then you can make, make a note there and then we’ll whatever, um, you wanna start with and then we’ll show the updated and we can talk about similarities, changes, et cetera.

Sevan Matossian (20:45):

Okay. I may even take a picture here of this.

Mattew Ouza (20:47):

Which sex are we going with?

Sevan Matossian (20:50):

Uh, do me me. Is that cool, Brian? Yeah. So the, what month did we make these

Brian Friend (21:04):

It’s right before the open. So end of February. And uh, why don’t you read ’em off for anyone who’s listening.

Sevan Matossian (21:11):

So this is, this is February, uh, uh, 2022. Okay. Okay. Sorry. I brain fart, uh, beautiful graphic. By the way. You wanna read ’em off.

Mattew Ouza (21:23):

Thank you. Will.

Brian Friend (21:23):

Yeah. Will did that graphic. Sure. So before the season started, we, uh, or I had Justin Madera says the top seed Patrick Vener two Brent FSI, three Carl Goodmanson four Romanoff, five Fiona Koski, six X and Patrick seven was our ju eight, Ricky ARD nine and GMOs S 10

Sevan Matossian (21:44):

Brian Friend (21:45):

Okay. And, uh, yeah. And then, you know, I had mentioned some other people on that list, which, um, all one will show up on the top 20 list for what we have now

Mattew Ouza (21:58):

Go to the top 20.

Sevan Matossian (21:59):

Say that last. No, no, no, no, no, no. I wanna see, should we go do the women now from last year or you wanna go straight to the 20?

Brian Friend (22:07):

Let’s just stick with the men, but okay.

Sevan Matossian (22:09):

Got it. Simple.

Brian Friend (22:13):

Oh, there’s there’s the other ones. Yeah. Down there. So these are the guys I had said were like just narrowly missing Alexander Carone, Alex VI Cole, Sager, Jeffrey Adler. No Olson. Travis Mayer.

Sevan Matossian (22:23):

Hold on. I wanna write these down. Hold on.

Mattew Ouza (22:26):

Travis Mayer.

Brian Friend (22:28):

Travis Mayer.

Sevan Matossian (22:31):

So you kind of did have it down to, uh, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 places at that point.

Brian Friend (22:40):

Um, these weren’t NEC like these guys, I didn’t necessarily rank in order just they were the ones that I was when I was picking 8, 9, 10. These are other names I was considering.

Sevan Matossian (22:48):

Okay. Right. Cause actually Noah probably would’ve been 11. Right.

Brian Friend (22:53):

Well, we’re gonna see.

Sevan Matossian (22:55):

Okay. Let’s do it. All right. Are we starting at 20? No, we’re gonna look at them all. Perfect.

Mattew Ouza (23:02):

What, what?

Brian Friend (23:04):

Yeah. Yeah, no,

Sevan Matossian (23:04):

It’s fine. It’s fine. That’s fine. Let’s do it. Let’s do it. Let’s do it.

Mattew Ouza (23:06):

Oh man.

Sevan Matossian (23:07):

So this is the power ranking as of April 4th, 2022. When this needs to be on a website,

Mattew Ouza (23:14):

It is, this is where I’m getting it from.

Sevan Matossian (23:17):

Oh, You are? What website is it on

Mattew Ouza (23:20):

This of on podcast.com. Is it the blog section? And you can see Brian’s power rankings there.

Sevan Matossian (23:25):

Oh fucking a awesome. Okay. I wanna wanna read the guys who are outside the 21st and then we’ll dig in and start asking Brian questions. We have Tyler Christal. We have Sam. Well qu do we know if Sam Quan’s? I mean, is he competing? Yeah. Okay. Uh, Phil tune, Jay crouch. Wow. Interesting. Um, how did Phil tune do in the, uh, quarter finals? He smoked, he smoked the open, right?

Brian Friend (23:48):

Yeah. He in the quarter finals, he was 17th worldwide in the open. He was fifth worldwide.

Sevan Matossian (23:55):

Wow. You got him out there. Okay. Okay. Uh, Jay crouch, uh, that’s the Irish cat, right?

Brian Friend (24:01):

He’s from Australia.

Sevan Matossian (24:02):

Oh, Matt Sturtz, dude. Yeah. Um, who am I confusing him with from um, Ireland?

Brian Friend (24:09):

I don’t know.

Sevan Matossian (24:10):

Sam Stewart.

Brian Friend (24:11):

Oh, okay. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (24:14):

I mean, listen, J J crouch and Sam Stewart. Uh, D pepper. Andre who day? Augustine. Rick El may I I,

Brian Friend (24:22):

So these guys are down here because at least one of the other analysts and had each one of these guys inside their top 20 and in some cases multiple times, did they show up on the list?

Sevan Matossian (24:33):

Okay. But this is your list. This isn’t the list that we’re gonna see on the morning, chalk up the morning, chalk up is everyone smooshed together.

Brian Friend (24:39):

You’ll be able to see each of our list individually and the, a, the average ranking of those athletes. When you look at all five and then the power rankings for that will be what we were calling composite power rankings.

Mattew Ouza (24:55):

Now you getting feedback real time, Brian, real time,

Sevan Matossian (25:02):

Brian Friend (25:02):

You know what to do with that? Don

Sevan Matossian (25:04):

Brian, I thought we talked about ranking hopper above me after a but hop. Oh, and hopper is 18. Okay. Okay. Right.

Brian Friend (25:12):

Hopper’s actually, Hopper’s actually a good place to start here for, just for a general, like how difficult this is. He finished 18th at the games last year. I think he’s significantly better now than he was last year. But the, the field is, is really, is really difficult to assess. So one, one thing you noticed is Scott, Patrick’s on this list, but when the season started, we didn’t know Scott, Patrick was gonna compete. We’re not entirely sure, but we’ve talked about it on here before, even that it appears like he’s competing. He hasn’t said that he is not competing. When he asked about it, he was like, well, we’ll see, like he’s gonna, you know, so we, as a group, the five of us decided we would include him on this list. So we enter him back in here and then really what’s like the ones that I I look at and I’m like, okay, like how long are Vener Falkowski EKG, Yona, Koski gonna be guys that are in the top seven.

Brian Friend (26:02):

You know, how long are guys like no Olson COSIG or Travis Mayer, Alex vio gonna be guy that are in the top 15, like at some point, new blood has to come up and push some of these guys out. But it’s proven to that. It’s pretty hard to do. Like it’s only a couple people that are ever able to move in year after year. One guy, maybe two guys, maybe. So even if Jason ends up finishing 18th again, this year, it doesn’t necessarily mean he hasn’t gotten any better. I think the field is just getting to a point where it’s really tough. You have a, uh, older group of guys that have been doing it for a long time, that are still very good and a really talented young cohort coming up that are wanting to push them out

Sevan Matossian (26:41):

If Annie TH’s daughter. And I, and, and I know you don’t believe that the, the women’s is deep. Um, but if Annie Thor’s daughter can be in third place, I mean, I’m validating what you’re saying. Anything is possible. Like even, even these guys, well, wait, let’s be waiting. Let’s

Brian Friend (26:58):

That’s another extreme, right? If Matt, if Annie THS ever can finish there. And Kristen hold Ulta, who is a few years older than her can finish fourth. And then you have Hailey Adams, who’s 21 fifth and you have ma Obrien who’s 18, seventh. This is a massive range. And who’s the ones that are missing Gabby and Laura are 24 and 25 and TIAs 28. You’ve got basically every age range covered in the top seven women alone. Right.

Sevan Matossian (27:22):

It’s and experience in the, an experience in the sport, right? Yeah. Not just age range, but number of years competing.

Brian Friend (27:27):

Right. And so it’s this weird situation where right now, really on for both the men and the women where, um, there’s a ton of young talent, but the old guard is still very good.

Sevan Matossian (27:37):

And then there’s just these weird wild cards. Like we’ve never seen Chandler Smith just put it together, right?

Brian Friend (27:43):

Yeah. Willie yours coming back from injury. We have Roman Coff eligible to compete at the games this year. We have Ricky ARD back from four year suspension. There’s a lot of variables on the men’s side, up towards the top.

Sevan Matossian (27:55):

Look at those guys in the top three, Justin Maderas Patrick valor, Brent POWs. My goodness. That is gonna be tough to break into those guys.

Brian Friend (28:03):

And I will say there, it was a unanimous 1, 1 11 fors and unanimous 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 for Vener.

Sevan Matossian (28:10):

Wow. Wow.

Brian Friend (28:12):

Those are the only two unanimous ones on the men’s side. And on the women’s side, there was only one like that.

Mattew Ouza (28:17):

Is there anybody that you think could pull an upset on those guys at this point? Or they just too far in

Brian Friend (28:20):

Front? Um, it’s hard to say. I mean, last here to, to me, uh, the three of those guys looked like the front runners and then Brent faded a little, but I think he was a little bit more injured than he wants to people to necessarily know, or at least to know at the time. Um, they looked like the class of the field for a majority of the weekend. And, uh,

Sevan Matossian (28:43):

You think Brent’s injured? You think Brent’s injured right now? Know?

Brian Friend (28:46):

I have no idea what I was talking about the games last year.

Sevan Matossian (28:51):

Oh, okay. I, well, I thought when I heard that it made me right away. Think of the open, some of those funky numbers, he was kicking the

Brian Friend (28:57):

Open. No, no, no, no, no. We know because there’s other like go check Lasar ju kitchen in the opening. He’s nowhere to be found. Check him in the quarter finals. He’s right up there at the top. Same thing with front. Okay. It’s I mean, these guys, everyone on this list, no matter how well they did in the open, totally understand that the open for them was a, an a afterthought and, uh, quarter finals. They have to be a little bit more serious for it. But even these guys, I would expect that their main priority in the quarter finals was make sure that I’m checking all the boxes of the workout, submissions, standards, movements, measurements, videos, et cetera. Cause I don’t wanna have to do this a second or third time. If I make a mistake, I don’t want to be getting penalized for anything I just need to get through. So those, you know, I still don’t think we’ve seen the best from any of these necessarily in, at this point in the season.

Sevan Matossian (29:41):

Uh, the two, the two guys that I think that, um, to, to answer math question, um, I think, uh, Scott pan and GE mm are the two guys that they could cause Scott’s gonna be a trip, man. Scott is gonna be a trip if he’s getting healthier.
