#332 CrossFit Games – Open Week 3 RECAP with Angelo DiCicco & Brian Friend

Sevan Matossian (00:01):

Bam we’re live. Bam. Bam. Oh, I just saw a text come in. Is that, oh. I don’t have my phone with me. Oh, there it is. Rich Hilton. Steven Plyler, Hector, Andrew, Hector. Bam. We’re live we’re we’re a little early today. Uh, first I would like to say, give 10 seconds to the beautiful, sweet sounds.

Speaker 2 (00:31):

That’s a sound of a 360 degree barbell brush by hybrid athletics.

Sevan Matossian (00:38):

Uh, the, the, the two, two of my guests have given feedback on that. Rich Fring said it, it like, wait, what the? Oh, hold on. It’s Brian. Let’s see. What’s going on? Hey,

Speaker 3 (00:50):

You sent me the link for last week’s episode.

Sevan Matossian (00:52):

Ah, the link for last week’s episode. All right. Thank you. We’ll fix that right now. All right. Send him the link for this week’s episode and week’s episode and this week’s episode BA we’re. So last week, how’s that? Bam, Heidi. Hi Bruce. Hi, will. Hi Caleb. Hi Brian friend. Hi, uh, finally, um, if you go do paper street coffee, and you buy coffee, coffee, and you use the code seven on you get 20% off. That’s pretty cool. And that only works until March 27th. And when you do that, you get entered to win a barbell from rogue, the Ohio bar, a custom one. I dunno. What’s custom about it. I don’t know if it looks like coffee smells like coffee tastes like coffee, but it’s custom. So there, This is a show that will discuss Colton Merton in detail for three and a half hours. We will be prying into his scores, his movements, all things, Colton Merton’s

Angelo DiCicco (02:02):

What place they in

Sevan Matossian (02:04):

To dissect Colton Merton’s. We have Brian friend, Uh, Brian, the dissector friend.

Angelo DiCicco (02:13):

It’s a new one.

Sevan Matossian (02:14):

And, uh, Angelo, Give us the scoop on Roman training at mayhem de Chico.

Angelo DiCicco (02:23):

I wouldn’t know yet. I haven’t been there. I’m at work.

Sevan Matossian (02:26):

He, he, I, um, someone sent me Linky posted on his story that, uh, like he landed in, in, in heaven or something and it was him, I think looking around the mayhem gym. Is he in Cookville?

Angelo DiCicco (02:35):

Yeah. Yeah, he is here. That’s dope. Cause I think today was, today was the first day.

Sevan Matossian (02:40):

That’s awesome. Yeah. That’s awesome. Awesome. Awesome. What’s he? What’s he doing there?

Angelo DiCicco (02:47):

Fleeing his country?

Sevan Matossian (02:50):

May.

Angelo DiCicco (02:51):

Can you play?

Sevan Matossian (02:52):

Aye. Kaumba aye. Kaumba I dunno. Is this, is this place better? Oh yeah, that place is better right there. Oh man. Everything’s better with rich. He could have just brought rich to Russia and everything would be fine. Yeah. Um, is he, was that the plan all along? Are you surprised to see him there or is that the plan all along?

Angelo DiCicco (03:10):

Um, I think it was the plan within the last couple weeks. Uh, I believe he reached out and said he wanted to come and trained with us. I think he’s gonna try a little bit, I don’t know if he’s staying in till quarter finals, but I know he’s gonna do quarter finals here and then probably stay till the games. I think that’s the plan

Sevan Matossian (03:30):

And I GU and guess we’ll see what

Angelo DiCicco (03:31):

Stay into quarter finals. Cause they’re very soon

Sevan Matossian (03:33):

And I guess we’ll see what happens. What CrossFits reaction, Brian, have you heard anything? What CrossFits gonna do this year in terms of letting people move around last year, we had the, the COVID stuff. So certain people, no, your hair looks good. Your looks good. Uh, the COVID it’s very square on top. It’s

Brian Friend (03:47):

I dunno. I dunno. What’s going on here?

Sevan Matossian (03:49):

Whatever you usually wear a hat. We usually don’t get to see your hair.

Brian Friend (03:53):

I got a haircut. Uh, very lovely lady from the gym. Gave me a haircut.

Sevan Matossian (03:58):

Did you do it, Jim?

Brian Friend (04:01):

Uh, no. It’s uh, you know, Scott, Polansky occasionally comments in here that I play disc stuff with. It’s his wife?

Sevan Matossian (04:07):

Yeah, my favorite. Uh that’s my favorite listener. Don’t tell anyone. So col MES is in fourth place with 35 points. Holy smokes. It’s incredible sax and Patrick, Matt poin. Am I saying that name right? Pooling? Yeah. Uh, Justin Maderas I’m the only person in the game that says his name. Right. And Colton Mertons.

Colten Mertens (04:33):

Wow.

Brian Friend (04:34):

Well’s just continue on with the top 10. And then we’ll talk about why these guys are all in the top 10,

Sevan Matossian (04:39):

Uh, Phil tune tune, Victor Lumal Victor Lal, right?

Angelo DiCicco (04:46):

This is the subject change or anything. Is it? This is, this is done, right?

Brian Friend (04:50):

Uh, all, all scores should be, I don’t think I have the audio on, right. All scores should be entered by now, but there is course a review process that could still happen.

Angelo DiCicco (04:59):

Okay.

Sevan Matossian (05:00):

Um, is that L silent? What is, what country is that? That moon flag With the yellow stripes, the yellow cross on it. Do we know

Brian Friend (05:10):

Sweden?

Sevan Matossian (05:12):

Okay. June gal L Lal. We’ll make the J silent. Okay. L doll Lal, Jake crouch, who we had on the show. Scott Telo I keep seeing his name. He hasn’t been on the show, right?

Brian Friend (05:27):

No.

Sevan Matossian (05:29):

Um, Cedric Le point, uh, and, um, do pepper. Those are the top 10. Amazing. And then all the way down at number 13, we have may Ham’s, uh, strongest, uh, entry into page one of the 2020 open rich Froning.

Brian Friend (05:44):

We should, if we’re gonna talk about, uh, mayhem, we should go to number 14 as well.

Sevan Matossian (05:49):

Tyler Christa,

Brian Friend (05:51):

We should notice that, uh, Charles Quran is no longer the fittest in mayhem. Wow, sorry, Charles.

Sevan Matossian (05:59):

Uh, what got him? What got him still

Angelo DiCicco (06:01):

Very fit though?

Brian Friend (06:03):

Still very fit.

Angelo DiCicco (06:05):

I think it was just a tough workout for him. I mean, overall, it just may just not be his strengths. Like the last two weeks were the last two weeks happened. Like, I mean, we talked about last week, they were pretty similar. Um, and he was good at those but workouts and then workout came up that he wasn’t just, just wasn’t as a great app. He did. He did well though.

Sevan Matossian (06:22):

And, uh, number 50, holding down page one, Scott pan

Brian Friend (06:28):

Scott pan, who is apparently signing up for quarter finals, despite being, uh, retired.

Sevan Matossian (06:34):

How do you know, did he say that? Has he, has he talked about that?

Brian Friend (06:37):

I think he put someone sent me something on Instagram today that he, you know, that he’d, uh, I didn’t even look at it. Someone just said that he was signing up for quarter finals. Is

Angelo DiCicco (06:48):

Scott, the Tom Brady of the CrossFit world.

Brian Friend (06:52):

I’ll see if Kristen hold signs up too. Yeah, I dunno. True. Um, but anyways, so on these top 10?

Sevan Matossian (06:59):

Yes.

Brian Friend (07:00):

Uh, Oh, one of the top 10 is here.

Sevan Matossian (07:05):

Yes, he is. Holy. That hair pretend like you don’t see him.

Colten Mertens (07:11):

What’s up fellas.

Brian Friend (07:12):

I’m seeing double On screen is in the bottom screen.

Sevan Matossian (07:17):

Uh, so go, go ahead and say what you were saying, Brian, and we’ll introduce our guest.

Brian Friend (07:21):

No, I’m actually happy that that Colton’s here and he can, he can perhaps provide some perspective on this, uh, nine of the guys in the top 10. Well, I would say eight of the guys in the top 10, I would consider to be, uh, either slight or short, relative to an average CrossFitter and like an average games, male CrossFitter the exceptions would be Justin Maderas, who’s basically like the ideal build and Allen pepper who’s way bigger than everyone else in this group. And, but it’s really not like, look at what the tests are. It’s not that surprising. Um, whether it’s the gymnastics or the thrusters, they were the, I don’t know what was the cross or who everyone in the final workout, but it’s a little bit more advantageous to be smaller for that. If you were sprinting the workout, which all of these guys are deadlifts and burpees, both gonna favor a slider, smaller athlete, if it’s moderate weight, which it was, and the first workout, same thing, there was nothing there that would be favorable, short, taller athlete. We knew that they, it wasn’t gonna be rowing or wall balls. There was nothing that was super heavy not to say that any of these guys wanted do well on a strong lift anyway, but I’m not in by any means. Am I, am I surprised that the, of the makeup of body composition of the guys in the top 10 with the exception of down pepper

Sevan Matossian (08:31):

And, and look how young they all are,

Brian Friend (08:34):

There is also yes, uh, a youth movement for sure is going on in CrossFit.

Sevan Matossian (08:39):

I cannot do pepper is 20 years old. Colton has pigs on the farm, older than that.

Brian Friend (08:45):

Colton, am I off base here?

Colten Mertens (08:51):

Uh,

Brian Friend (08:51):

Other way I could say it is, are the guys with the best?

Colten Mertens (08:57):

Yeah. I mean, the tests are what they are and um, usually the best way to find out whether it’s a good workout for a shorter athlete, taller athlete, heavier athlete is just look at the leaderboard. There’s a lot of short guys, lot of tall guys, and I haven’t looked at it yet, but yeah, if there’s a lot of short guys at the top, it’s probably safe to say that. Yeah. Programming favored for our levers.

Brian Friend (09:18):

Well, and, and I’ve, and I’ve written an article that I think will come out in the next day or two about the stark and noticeable differences in this year’s open from what we have, you know, come to expect from the open based on the previous 11 years.

Colten Mertens (09:36):

Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (09:36):

That mustache is so Bato. It’s so Bato. Oh my God. It’s I hope you’re getting a low rider Thing is amazing. Holy cow. Okay. Sorry. I interrupted. Do you remember what you were saying?

Brian Friend (09:53):

Who me? I don’t know

Sevan Matossian (09:54):

What. No, no. Colton was about, say something in slow motion. Go ahead, Colton. No Colton just hello, Colton. Okay. it. I’ll ask another question. Colton. Did I, did you want fourth place? Oh. His connection bad. Hey Colton, can you go out on the roof and, and fix that? Hey, take the CLO putting another close hanger on the end of that. Uh, Hey, Colton

Colten Mertens (10:37):

Can hear.

Sevan Matossian (10:38):

Yeah. Oh. We just lost your picture. It’s good. Oh, look at that shirt. Holy. He’s repping the TDC shirt.

Colten Mertens (10:50):

Oh

Sevan Matossian (10:50):

My goodness. Hey, um, in all seriousness, what size is the good size to get for dude’s 180 5. Is that, are you wearing a large?

Colten Mertens (10:56):

Yeah, it’s a large.

Sevan Matossian (10:58):

Does it fit you good? Is it too small or is it good?

Colten Mertens (11:00):

No, it’s perfect.

Sevan Matossian (11:02):

Um, so do, did you want fourth place? Were you, were you working hard to get forth place? There’s this kind of, um, because the open and, and I say this somewhat tongue in cheek doesn’t mean anything anymore. Um, there’s, it’s been kind of become too,

Brian Friend (11:18):

What it means is uncertain though.

Sevan Matossian (11:21):

Oh, okay. Okay. Yes, that you’re right, right. And you corrected me on that last week, too. I like that. Brian’s saying it’s uncertain because we don’t know with how all the changes in the world with COVID and war and whatnot, what the actual implications of the open R because they could change it any minute. Is that what you’re saying? Brian, we could break into world war I three and it could be the top 40 in the open that go and that’s it. Right? I mean, is that right? No. Yes.

Brian Friend (11:43):

Well that would be pretty brutal considering, uh, a number in scope of the tests.

Sevan Matossian (11:48):

Oh, dude. How about this? Sorry, Colton. What if, what if something crazy did happen? Like in pandemic world war three, two, and they had to take the top 40 and rich went, uh, uh, into the, um, individual. Holy no way. Hey, if they did that, I bet you he’d do it if they did that.

Brian Friend (12:08):

Yeah. Cuz he’d look at the list and he’d see that most of the guys that had a chance to beat him are gone and he is a bit lock for a second.

Sevan Matossian (12:14):

Only one left. You can challenge him is on the screen right now, Colton.

Colten Mertens (12:18):

Hey, I beat him three outta three. I beat him on all three workouts.

Sevan Matossian (12:24):

Every time you talk about rich, all I do is stare at Angel’s face to see if like he’s gonna start melting, you know, careful

Angelo DiCicco (12:32):

He can handle himself if he can handle himself. He’ll probably be in the comments soon.

Sevan Matossian (12:35):

Uh, Colton. Um,

Colten Mertens (12:37):

Did

Sevan Matossian (12:37):

You repeat any of the, did you repeat any of the workouts?

Colten Mertens (12:43):

Uh, yeah, I had some back issues, so, um, like, like obviously the first two workouts were pretty like low back intensive and uh, had some back issues. So I gave those ones second try, just cause um, I wanted to see how I could deal with, uh, managing my back a little bit better, had some hepatitis going on some sci nerve issues going on, but yeah, but other than that,

Brian Friend (13:08):

Most, most people have back issues and therefore only do it once merchants does it five times.

Colten Mertens (13:14):

I wanted to know my capacity on those workouts were I wanted, know what my actual capacity was and I wanted to give it a, a good effort so I could truly get tested and see where I fall.

Sevan Matossian (13:25):

Did you do better the second time?

Colten Mertens (13:28):

Yeah, I’ve never done a workout twice and gotten worse.

Sevan Matossian (13:32):

Interesting. And what did you do between the first workout and the second workout to mitigate like the injury?

Colten Mertens (13:38):

Uh, some of it was, uh, like just stuff at the farm. Uh, some work we had to do was really tightening up. So once I got that done, that helped relieve it a bit. And then also just going and doing some hot tub sessions after I got done with my swimming workouts when I was at the wreck. And uh, I got one of those vibrating foam rollers from CrossFit kilo to when I went up there for a day. And that actually helped a lot too.

Sevan Matossian (14:03):

It’s basically a ball. And you just put, you just dig in with it and let it vibrate.

Colten Mertens (14:06):

Yeah, it actually worked pretty good. I surprised.

Sevan Matossian (14:09):

And then the third workout, um, you took, uh, fourth place in it. You got 4 24, which is insane. It’s actually the whole only person, two people in the top 10. One of ’em tied you Cedric Le point and Scott Telo, uh, beat you, but everyone else in that top 10, you, you, you crushed. Um, did you do that one? How many times did you do that one?

Colten Mertens (14:31):

Yeah, I did, uh, do that just once.

Sevan Matossian (14:33):

Wow. So you think you could even do that one faster is what you’re saying?

Colten Mertens (14:37):

I don’t know. Uh, um, the day I did it, that was the fastest time I could go that day and said they tripped on my double letters. Other than that I could, that was the best I had that day.

Sevan Matossian (14:47):

Awesome. Um, Brian, are you, you know, Colton just from these three workouts, do, do you think this is a better Colton than we saw last year?

Brian Friend (14:59):

Uh, I mean, that’s hard to say too early. I would’ve, no, I mean, I would’ve, uh, I would say this, I would’ve expected him to do well and all three of these workouts. Um, and I would also be shocked if he’s not better than he was last year.

Colten Mertens (15:13):

I actually wasn’t expecting to do well in the first workout. I was pretty nervous about that one, just with the, uh, I haven’t had box jumps in the past and that, uh, new wall walk standard was a little bit difficult, But I was, I was,

Brian Friend (15:27):

Yeah, that, yeah. That’s that I have faith in you.

Sevan Matossian (15:32):

Um, Colton, what did you think about the overall, um, programming?

Colten Mertens (15:36):

Um, well, there wasn’t anything super long. Uh, my dad just found me, uh, no, there wasn’t anything, uh, super long, like first one was 15 minutes was in that trip long. We’ve had 20 minute open workout before, and it wasn’t, uh, uh, anything heavy. So that was kind of strange. I really thought there was gonna be a 22.4 worth of lift in it. And I think they kind of made a mistake, not doing that and only having three events. Good test of capacity overall though. I think

Sevan Matossian (16:07):

Angela,

Angelo DiCicco (16:09):

Uh, yeah, I, I agree there, wasn’t a long test and there wasn’t really a heavy to test and I understand that it’s only three weeks now, so they can only do so much, but I would’ve liked to seen one longer test and one heavier test. So changing one of the workouts and then adding a lift. So I think Colton’s kinda, I agree with him

Sevan Matossian (16:28):

Is, is that the new gym Colton?

Colten Mertens (16:30):

No, this is the garage. I’ve been training that, uh, the, my gym won’t be the until probably late summer, early fall is when it’ll get finished.

Sevan Matossian (16:38):

You’re you’re not in that small little, um, hut with the, with the uneven floor and all that anymore.

Colten Mertens (16:43):

No, that’s, that’s where I am right now.

Sevan Matossian (16:45):

Oh, that is oh, okay. Yep. There she blows. Um, Colton, do you know, do you know which, or is there any way that you would know what semi-final, you’re gonna go to after the quarter finals already? Brian’s looking at me like, no, no,

Colten Mertens (17:00):

I have no idea yet. Um, hopefully I’ll place top 10 in the quarters and then they’ll give us a choice if they do the same thing as they did last year, but you know, they may not even do that. So we’ll see.

Sevan Matossian (17:11):

And then if they did, which one would you go to?

Colten Mertens (17:14):

I’d probably two use grain games cuz it’s pretty close. And uh, I feel like the program is, was pretty decent last year. I expect they’re probably gonna have a long workout this year cuz they didn’t have anything last year and they kind of got roasted for that, but that’ll be fine. I’ve been working on that a lot.

Brian Friend (17:30):

Well, what I, what I would expect is that the programming across all the semifinals is a little bit more or thought thought out from CrossFits perspec perspective, meaning that obviously there’re gonna be two standardized workouts, but I’m hoping that in addition to that, they’ll say, you know, here’s workout one, here’s workout two, you need to have four other workouts. One of them needs to be in this time domain. One of them needs to be a heavy implement. One of ’em needs to like, and they give ’em a little bit more structure so that we don’t have those outlier situations where there’s one semifinal that doesn’t go along. There’s one semifinal that has a super high skill, very difficult, uh, gymnastics movement. And then none of the others have those things or the, or the other way around.

Colten Mertens (18:07):

Yeah, that would be ideal. I think that’s what all the athletes want for sure. Um, it really sucks when you’re go into a semi-final and you just don’t know you you’re gonna be subject to the biases of those running the event. And you definitely saw that from event to event last year, there definitely biases and uh, just major differences in the programing.

Brian Friend (18:26):

I mean, you even see it in the off season events, you know, you know what you’re getting at rogue compared to Dubai compared to Guus is gonna be a little bit different and really the nature of the semifinals isn’t isn’t any different than that. And I think that even the CrossFit even needs to be specific and say, you need to have a workout with deficit handstand pushups, but that can’t be strict or you know, something like that because if one semifinal has a strict deficit, handstand pushup, another has regular handstand pushups and another has handstand walking. I mean, those are three very different tests and CrossFit should have if they have, you know, this season should be well thought out and there should be progressions throughout the season. So we’ve already done wall walking they’ll pro there needs to be some kind of upper body pressing or, or, uh, yeah. Movement in the semi-final stage. And there needs to at the games and you can’t have semifinals that have done four different versions of handstand pushups. And then one of those versions is also tested at the games.

Colten Mertens (19:17):

Exactly. And, um, you know, I mean, CrossFit has, you would think they have a plan for the open quarters in the games, but the semifinals is out of their hands. So that seems kind of silly. And even just having like saying, okay, you have to have strict handstand pushups. Um, you know, there was an event at the Mac last year. I think it had four handstand pushups per round.

Angelo DiCicco (19:42):

Yeah.

Colten Mertens (19:43):

So I mean, handstand pushups, weren’t tested there. That’d be like at grant games, if they programed 10 wall balls per round, as opposed to 33, I would’ve blew through that workout. I wouldn’t have been tested on wall balls. So that makes a difference too. So what it really, I mean, they, I hope in the future process will just take control programming, all of them and hopefully have a vision for the whole season.

Angelo DiCicco (20:06):

I think I, I like, uh, I like the semifinals having, uh, a little bit of free them because then, but not as much as last year, that’s pretty much all I have to say is I think last year was kind of like the wild west. Like it was just, you know, here’s a couple movements you need to do you choose what you wanna do? I like that they kind of left them up, let them do whatever they want, but it needs to be a little bit more uniform because let like Colton just said, yeah, they may have, they probably told them, Hey, you need to do handstand pushups or Hey, you need to do wall balls. But like the event itself was so broad. Um, I think they need to dial it in at least a little bit.

Sevan Matossian (20:47):

Colton, thanks for popping on Christmas. Came early for the, uh, seven podcast. Always love having you round, buddy. I appreciate you lending some of your star power to us.

Brian Friend (20:56):

And I would say Colton in, in this order, I’m very impressed by your hairstyle, your t-shirt and your open performance.

Sevan Matossian (21:05):

I second that I second that

Colten Mertens (21:07):

All right. Well I think that’s a good note to leave on.

Sevan Matossian (21:10):

All right brother. Good night. Thank you. Yeah,

Brian Friend (21:13):

That was a nice surprise. Savan appreciate

Sevan Matossian (21:15):

That. I, I was going back and forth. Should I tell them? I said, nah, they’ll, they’ll be, they’ll be like the surprise.

Brian Friend (21:19):

There’s some surprises that are not good surprises. That was a good one.

Sevan Matossian (21:24):

Okay. Now that he’s gone to ask you the hard question and this is this really, I just really wish that like I, I, and, and you guys can slap me around for saying dumb like this, but I wish like the top five of the open, automatically get to go to the games or something like that. I just wanna add some value to the open of danger. I don’t like that. Um, but who in this top 10 is, would is, is I, I have two questions for you guys who in the, maybe we should do top 15 even, but in who, in this top 10 of the men we’re looking at, we’ll do the same with the women is a going to the games and B gonna finish top 10 in the games,

Brian Friend (22:00):

The top 10 or the top 15. I think

Sevan Matossian (22:02):

Let’s what is top 15, too much to manage? No. Okay. Let’s look at the top. Can we see the top 15? Okay. Let’s be top 16 because we know rich is doing team so rich doesn’t count. Let’s do top 16. Rich is everything up.

Brian Friend (22:16):

Okay. Of the top 16. Yeah. I would expect, uh, that Saxon Patrick, uh, Justin Maderas, Phil tune, Jay crouch, D pepper and Jeff Adler. And I guess Jason Hopper would make the games.

Sevan Matossian (22:34):

Uh, wait, wait. So can you do that one more time? Cause I wanna write these down. Cause I’m gonna ask the question about you had Saxon, you had Justin and then I missed someone in there.

Brian Friend (22:41):

Phil tune. Phil

Sevan Matossian (22:41):

Tune. Okay. Phil tune.

Brian Friend (22:42):

J crouch.

Sevan Matossian (22:43):

J

Brian Friend (22:44):

Okay. I’m skipping some people intentionally. I’m gonna come back to here. Pepper. Okay. Jeff Adler and Jason Hopper. Those would be the guys that I would say. I expect them to make the games.

Sevan Matossian (22:55):

So about, about, about 50%. Okay.

Brian Friend (22:58):

There are other guys on this list, like Matt poin, Colton Mertons, uh, Seon, Alex Kaul and Tyler, Christopher who I think have a legitimate and good chance to make the games. But I would put them in a different, like I would expect the top group. And I would say these guys have a good chance to make it. So that’s and now you’re looking at most of the list.

Sevan Matossian (23:20):

So, so Matt poin took second. Let me, let me play. Let me bug you and Angela A. Little bit here. Matt poin took second. You think it’s okay. That a guy takes second in the, in and he is not a shoe win a hundred percent. Okay. Yeah. I’m I don’t. I hate that.

Brian Friend (23:36):

Well, well it depend, no, it depends on what’s going on, but there are guys who have finished like third or fifth and open before and finished 33rd in their regional two months later.

Sevan Matossian (23:49):

Wow.

Brian Friend (23:49):

Yeah, because I, for the first thing is, and I’ve said this a million times and I’ll always stick to it. I really don’t care what you do in an online competition. I wanna see you do it in a live competition.

Sevan Matossian (23:58):

Right,

Brian Friend (23:59):

Right. And it’s, and, and look, I, I’m also saying that most of the guys in the top 20 are legitimate and good in live competition, but there are always, and I’ve written about this and I’ve talked about this. There are always one or two guys that pop in there, or women that pop in there that then when the next time you see ’em in a live competition, you go, how is it possible that this athlete got second in the world? And also can’t do this. And the reason is scope and breadth of the test. And particularly this year is not enough to qualify anyone to the games.

Sevan Matossian (24:31):

Yeah. I, I, I agree with everything you’re saying. And, and that’s why I don’t like it. I just want there to be more pressure so I can enjoy it more as a fan and more as a app pundit.

Angelo DiCicco (24:40):

My follow up to that is, uh, Brian out of the top 15 in quarter finals. So let’s just fast forward the top 15 quarter finals. How many of those do you think are gonna be, be at the games you think it’s you think you probably more

Sevan Matossian (24:54):

Out of the top? What, how many Angelo

Angelo DiCicco (24:56):

Out the top? Well, so we’re talking at the top. Well, 15 or 16 in the open, outta the top 15 of the quarter finals, I would say it’d be, I would say it’d be more like 10 or 11 of

Brian Friend (25:06):

It might even, might even be higher than that. Yeah. Uh, the, so the thing about the quarter finals is there’ll be more tests. There’ll be heavier implements. There’ll be higher skilled tests. There’ll be a greater range of time domain tested. And what you heard Colton, just say the athlete’s perception, even though CrossFit has not said, this is that there’s value for finishing in the top 10. So they want to finish in the top 10. So more of the better athletes will give it a, a, a further go. Someone me messaged me today and said, um, I watched all of rich Frings workouts and his, uh, heart rate never exceeded 1 52 on any of the three workouts. It seems like he probably had more in the tank.

Sevan Matossian (25:44):

He had a heart rate monitor on.

Brian Friend (25:47):

Yeah, he wear, yeah, he wears it. And they display that side by side with his workouts. And you can see it going down as he is doing toes to bars and down as he is doing thrusters. And then up as he is walking across the jail,

Sevan Matossian (25:58):

Angelo, is he making bank from that? Rich. If you’re in the comments, God, I hope he’s making bank. You wanna see my heartbeat? Oh yeah. I’ll be grand old workout. If you wanna see this. That’s awesome. Yeah. Oh, that’s a great question, Brian, what the is rich doing? Is he, is he on fentanyl again?

Angelo DiCicco (26:17):

He has a ridiculously low heart rate. So like he he’s concerned that he’s

Sevan Matossian (26:22):

Just a big old boom, boom, boom.

Angelo DiCicco (26:25):

He thinks he’s he thinks he’s just weak. Like he thinks he’s mentally weak and he is. And uh, it’s, it’s funny. It’s funny to hear him talk about it, cuz it like stresses him out. He like,

Brian Friend (26:33):

Oh, this guy lied to me. Look, the first clip we pulled is over 1 52.

Sevan Matossian (26:37):

Oh it’s you’re close enough. Wow. Whoopy is killing it. They got the rich Froning.

Brian Friend (26:43):

I love, I love this. When it happens. When he, he starts out a set of gymnastics and it’s in the high one fifties and you just slowly see, it goes down as he does like an unbroken set of 15. It’s like, how is this happening?

Sevan Matossian (26:54):

Well, look at that.

Brian Friend (26:55):

He’s transitioning here. His heart. Rate’s going down. When I get off the bar, my heart, he goes whoop up 15 points.

Sevan Matossian (27:00):

Okay. He just, he just drug some gum off bottom of his shoe before he started.

Brian Friend (27:04):

Here’s the jump rope that everyone forgot was a part of this workout.

Angelo DiCicco (27:08):

And

Sevan Matossian (27:08):

He’s got deliver king 20 pound ankle weights on Oh. His heart rate, heart rate is going down. Brian. Holy.

Brian Friend (27:16):

I’m telling you. It’s crazy.

Angelo DiCicco (27:18):

Oh my God.

Angelo DiCicco (27:19):

So good. Double. He is so good. Double. Oh my God.

Angelo DiCicco (27:24):

Let’s

Angelo DiCicco (27:24):

See. I hope it spikes here because this is so these are so hard.

Sevan Matossian (27:27):

This is ridiculous. His heartbeats down to 1 29. How much are those thrusters? Is it 1 35?

Angelo DiCicco (27:35):

Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (27:36):

This is crazy. So it went down to 1 26 before it started going up again. Yeah. This is nuts. We gotta see someone else. I think there’s a

Angelo DiCicco (27:42):

Little bit of a delay to it though. So like I think, I think when a spike, if it spikes here in a minute, that’ll be actually during the thrusters

Angelo DiCicco (27:51):

Man.

Sevan Matossian (27:55):

Fascinating. Okay. So when we saw his heartbeat going down, that was probably in the transition and not when he was actually doing the double unders.

Angelo DiCicco (28:02):

Well, and then I nothing

Brian Friend (28:05):

Caleb, me, you,

Caleb Beaver (28:06):

It was within the same timeframe. Like if you look at the timer on top of the whoop, it says 4 48. If you look at the clock and the bottom left of the video, it says 4 48.

Angelo DiCicco (28:13):

Yeah. Yeah. Like consecutive. So my, the only thing that I have noticed about the whoop is even though it says it on there, um, I wear one too. So if it says it on there, I still think it’s a few seconds behind. I could be totally wrong, but think there’s a few seconds behind. And um, I love my whoop just as much as anybody else. Uh, any wrist, heart rate monitor is not as good as the actual chest strap.

Sevan Matossian (28:37):

Hey, listen, Whoopie. You want me to wear one of those during the show, I’ll take 50 grand a show and I’ll wear a Whoopie and you can see how a paper street coffee is my heartbeat and like that. And when someone uses sex instead of, uh, gender, you get all, I’ll get all twisted. Wow. Okay. So, but so back to the subject, Brian derailed us with dudes with their shirts off and whoopies um, so we’re okay with this. We’re we’re we’re as a

Sevan Matossian (29:06):

We’re okay. With the, that the open is just like these stepping stones, like Colin, Lauren said in the comments, this is good for the affiliates. It gives people a chance. I just don’t like it because I wanna see some more pressure on the athletes. And I wanna know that everyone tried their hardest instead of rich runnings heartbeat dropping down to 1 26. That’s like me when I’m asleep. Right. But, but you guys are cool with it. You as a, as a coach Jim owner and a commentator and analysis analytics guy, Brian you’re okay with it. You’re okay with it as an athlete. Angela.

Angelo DiCicco (29:33):

Yes.

Sevan Matossian (29:34):

Yes. But we do admit that not everyone went their hardest. The rich could have placed higher than

Brian Friend (29:38):

That. There are a lot of things about the opening that I, that I’m less than satisfied with this year. But in general, we, you have to look at the total picture and you and CrossFit laid it out there. And they put the rule book out earlier than they ever have. And we understood that the open was a qualifier to the quarter finals, which is a qualifier to semi-finals. And if you’re looking for people to try their hardest, the best athletes in the world to try their hardest, you.
