2023 Official Rogue Invitational EVENTS Show – Deepest Insights into Events – THUMB, CHASE, HOWELL

Sevan Matossian (00:00):

I want to go through some Instagram accounts, but first, bam. We’re Live the Thumb. Taylor Self from Self-Made training program. As it says in his name, if you want to get fit, that’s your place to go. If you want to get super fit, that’s the place you want to go. If you want to go to the games and you want to one-on-one coach, you only takes one male and one female per year. Get your applications in now. Is that true? You only take one male, one female. I just made that up.

Taylor Self (00:27):

Yeah, that’s not true. You made it up.

JR Howell (00:30):

Is it true that you’re sitting in a rocking chair like an actual rocking chair?

Taylor Self (00:34):

No, but this chair, no, I’m just pushing off a wall in front of me. I do love a freaking rocking chair, dude, but this is like a hundred year old chair.

JR Howell (00:41):

I could see you being 80 years old in a rocking chair just saying the worst words to random people.

Sevan Matossian (00:46):

Walking by JR Howell from CrossFit Crash, founder of the Crash Crucible, founder of the Crash, crescendo, founder of Jason Hopper, owner of the best facility on the East coast. If you want to do HIIT workouts. Oh, I hate it when people say that. I’m starting to hear that more and more. What did you do today? I did a hit. You mean you did CrossFit, you jackass. And then finally Chase Ingram needs to know Introduction after

JR Howell (01:16):

Didn’t Scared me

Sevan Matossian (01:17):

After The Lone Ranger is the most recognized voice in all of CrossFit and yes, finally that’s me

Taylor Self (01:27):

Prison savvy.

Sevan Matossian (01:30):

Like every good show. Let us begin. So what we’re going to do today is we’re going to go through all the rogue invitational workouts. We are going to give you the deepest. This is the official, I deem this, the official show for the Rogue Invitational events, but every good show we will start at Danielle Brandon’s Instagram account and look at the grid. I can’t believe this photo. Those are some of the largest grapes I’ve ever seen. Maybe you could scroll. Yeah, there we go. There we go. Jesus.

Taylor Self (02:01):

Jesus Christ.

Sevan Matossian (02:02):

Goodness, Maron. Okay, can we play that video? What’s going on here? Let’s play this video. Does

Taylor Self (02:06):

She have a grape on her chin?

Sevan Matossian (02:08):

She does. Okay. Oh man. Copyrighted music. Okay, let’s read some of the comments. How does one apply for the grape feeder position? I’d feed you those grapes. Just bought a house across the street. Wow. Like that one, please, Caleb.

Taylor Self (02:30):

Oh my goodness. Oh my God. I just bought a house.

Sevan Matossian (02:33):

I’ve been waiting for this video to drop all day. Thank you. And Miss Ariel. Me too. The kid cutaway. Matt, Susan. Now that’s how you sell a cold tub a please Like that one. My goodness. Who’s filming this? Geez Louise.

Taylor Self (02:58):

Wow. Well at least she’d choose with her mouth closed.

Sevan Matossian (03:01):

Hey, she’s more than I can say. She’s a good dude, Daniel. Brandon will be doing the workouts if everything goes according to plan that we will be talking about today. One more thing, let’s do a quick little tour of some of the big Instagram accounts that are relevant to today’s show. Let’s go over to Katie ER’s account. She is, I believe, the head honcho for this event and co-owner of Rogue with the extraordinary Bill. Let’s just take just a quick peek over there, do some trolling. Let’s just go through the last six posts. Can we click that one with the wine bottle or whatever that is? What’s going on there?

JR Howell (03:47):

It’s Dave’s olive oil.

Taylor Self (03:49):

Oh, they’re going to get fucked up for one of the events.

Sevan Matossian (03:51):

Oh, new shipment of the Dave Casserole olive oil for the Rogue Invitational. Okay. I thought he was using tins. He’s

JR Howell (03:58):

Doing both.

Sevan Matossian (03:59):

Okay, well there you go. Those will be in limited supply. If you are at the event, make sure you purchase the olive oil while you can and Dave will be there. Have him sign the bottle. Let’s see the next threat, the next Crocs Jr. Howell, do you wear Crocs?

JR Howell (04:17):

Affirmative.

Taylor Self (04:17):

No.

Sevan Matossian (04:18):

Oh, you do?

Taylor Self (04:19):

You do?

JR Howell (04:20):

Yeah.

Taylor Self (04:21):

I’ve never seen you wear Crocs.

JR Howell (04:22):

Yeah, slides are Crocs to and from the gym every day.

Sevan Matossian (04:25):

God, I wouldn’t be caught dead in Crocs, but I’ve never tried them. It’s just completely uneducated decision. Would you support, do you like Crocs? Why do you wear ’em? Just because they’re cool or because they actually feel good.

JR Howell (04:36):

Just comfort. Yeah. I remember when, I believe it was like 2020 or 2019 when the healthcare workers just in general were just getting slammed with a lot of hospitalizations and I think Crocs was like, we’re going to give a free pair to every healthcare provider, rn, anyone. So they just sent me a pair randomly and then I feel like they took off after that. Now it’s like the cool thing to do is to wear Crocs and put little

Sevan Matossian (05:08):

Speaking of getting slammed, a healthcare professionals getting slammed. Isn’t your wife a healthcare professional?

JR Howell (05:14):

She is. And you’ll not speak about her getting slammed. I just don’t even like that word. And my

Sevan Matossian (05:19):

Wife in that same sentence. Oh, JR Howell getting feisty.

JR Howell (05:24):

I sent a picture. I sent a picture of my wife wearing a Savon CEO shirt. His response was, yum.

Sevan Matossian (05:33):

I would never, ever,

Taylor Self (05:36):

Ever dress like that. Dude,

Sevan Matossian (05:39):

I’m a professional chase. You got my back. You wear Crocs?

Taylor Self (05:46):

No.

Sevan Matossian (05:46):

Okay. Tip Mr. Thumb.

Taylor Self (05:49):

No, I’ve never, I go barefoot. I’m a barefoot guy.

Sevan Matossian (05:52):

Oh, look at this. The young JR Howell.

Taylor Self (05:56):

Oh my god, that’s

JR Howell (05:58):

A fucking picture’s. A hundred percent edited. That’s a hundred percent edited. Someone with talent made that. Oh shit.

Sevan Matossian (06:06):

Young Jr. Howell from the past. Irock. Croc. So jr’s always a continuity in

JR Howell (06:13):

That JR. Only wore white forces. I’ll tell you that right now.

Sevan Matossian (06:17):

Okay, let’s go down a couple more pictures. We don’t have time for this bull. What’s this one? What’s the one with the stadium and any clues here? Anything we need to see? What’s that thing with the, yeah, what’s that? What’s that? What’s this? What’s that? It’s already

Taylor Self (06:29):

Been announced. The

JR Howell (06:30):

That’s bar. That’s the log for the bar Mus.

Sevan Matossian (06:35):

Oh it is? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Is it just like the one at the games or was it rogue last year? No. Was it a rogue last year?

JR Howell (06:43):

The exact same

Sevan Matossian (06:44):

But painted this year?

Taylor Self (06:46):

No. Painted

Sevan Matossian (06:48):

Isn’t?

JR Howell (06:49):

No, that’s just, it’s like a new set of rings. It’s just they look like that.

Sevan Matossian (06:53):

Okay. It looks like it was painted white. They don’t want bugs or something eaten at it, you know what I mean? Like that treatment that trees sometimes have the Just

Taylor Self (06:59):

Put some creosote on those things.

Sevan Matossian (07:01):

Fuck their hands.

Taylor Self (07:01):

Hands, dude.

Sevan Matossian (07:02):

Thank you. Okay, what else we got? What else? Let’s go a couple. What’s that thing with the ba steel box down there? No, not yeah. Oh,

JR Howell (07:19):

Strong man. Yeah, but usually that’s, I don’t know, but think about the cleanup.

Taylor Self (07:28):

That’s pretty, yeah, the name of the event

JR Howell (07:30):

Workout that’s been not announced, just the title of the workout has been announced. They’re

Taylor Self (07:35):

Going to have to clean up their, however many Keurigs of Oo they can produce and put it in that thing.

Sevan Matossian (07:40):

What number is that? Do you know? Mr. Hay Off top nine. Okay. Clean?

JR Howell (07:43):

Yeah, it’s late,

Taylor Self (07:45):

The last whatever. Okay.

Sevan Matossian (07:47):

Caleb, can you pull out and we see the whole grid, see if there’s anything else. We got those. We obviously all see those crazy weights on the left hand side. What’s the thing that looks like a vibrator? The red thing down there.

Taylor Self (07:58):

Oh, that’s mine.

Sevan Matossian (07:59):

Oh, okay. Comedy. That’s just a light from a, okay. Alright, can we go over to Bill ER’s Instagram account? Dan Guerrero, shut up and scribble in the house. You want to talk some shit Taylor

Taylor Self (08:14):

About?

Sevan Matossian (08:15):

Just about how I stole your show.

Taylor Self (08:18):

No dude, I’m here, dude, I’m here because of that, but I’m here.

Sevan Matossian (08:21):

Alright. Okay. Today I’m like, Hey, let’s do a show tonight. And Taylor’s like, dude, we’re doing that show tomorrow. I Katie Henneger on the hill. That’s cool. That’s really cool. Really, really cool. For those of you who, this is your first year around, this hill is bigger and steeper than it looks. That is finally a good rendition of it. In this picture, it actually shows you how bad that hill is. Some of the really wide shots. It doesn’t look that steep, but it is nasty.

JR Howell (08:48):

Mr. O’Keefe throwing haymakers at you in the,

Taylor Self (08:51):

Wow. Did you respond to that?

Sevan Matossian (08:53):

Shut up pussy. That’s what I was doing. Wow. I didn’t even see

Taylor Self (08:57):

That dude. Respond right now. Dude can’t.

Sevan Matossian (09:00):

I didn’t even see the comments. My goodness.

JR Howell (09:03):

Awesome.

Sevan Matossian (09:04):

What

Taylor Self (09:05):

Type this out? Eat a dong.

Sevan Matossian (09:07):

No, don’t type. No, no, no, no, no. I love Mr. O’Keeffe. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

JR Howell (09:16):

So the last part of event one is probably going to include what Katie’s doing right there.

Sevan Matossian (09:20):

Thank you. God. Do

Taylor Self (09:21):

You think they make it any different, steeper or higher each year or just same exact dimensions?

JR Howell (09:27):

I think it’s the same.

Sevan Matossian (09:28):

That hill, that 2 million hill, that thing probably cost over a million dollars. They did not change shit. It

Taylor Self (09:34):

Cost a million dollars to build one bleacher and lay turf over at Zevon.

Sevan Matossian (09:39):

Build it, store it, rebuild it, weld it, blah blah, blah, blah. Insurance. It’s expensive. It’s more than you think. How much do you think it is?

Taylor Self (09:48):

I don’t know. Not a million dollars.

Sevan Matossian (09:50):

300 grand.

Taylor Self (09:53):

More than a house. Dude, you think that costs more than a house get fucked? No way. I don’t know. Dude, I’m thinking

Sevan Matossian (10:02):

The 20 employees that it took to make it,

Taylor Self (10:04):

How many employees did it take to build a fucking house?

Sevan Matossian (10:07):

Their health insurance? I don’t know. I’m just, oh, 20 k. Are you kidding me? There’s more than 20 K in

Taylor Self (10:11):

Steel there way. I think it’s more than 20 k, but I don’t think it’s 300 K. I would say we cut it in half. Dude.

Sevan Matossian (10:16):

Mason Mitchell. $1 trillion. Thank you. Okay, cool. So that’s cool. What about, what’s the bull

JR Howell (10:27):

Strong man? Oh dude, it’s a sled but it’s cool. That looks

Taylor Self (10:29):

So fucking cool.

Sevan Matossian (10:30):

Oh, it’s for strongman. Who? Caress next. Hey, what’s more popular? Strongman or CrossFit? I heard someone say strongman. That one made me want to vomit.

Taylor Self (10:44):

Strongman’s problem. Ah, I don’t know. What do you guys think? Chase, what do you think?

Sevan Matossian (10:49):

What was that rogue thing? Do we need to see it or no? Where that A-frame. Upper right hand corner. Yeah, just rope climbs. Army event. Army event. Alright, and then let’s go over. Okay, fine. Let’s start the events then eventually we’ll work our way over. Finally we’ll finish the show with some rogue invitational Instagram perusing. Alright. Honestly, CrossFit is, I know I have to think CrossFit is too. Oh, strongman. Strongman. Maybe we need a poll.

Taylor Self (11:21):

Yes. I feel like Strongman is more popular, more generally known about,

JR Howell (11:28):

I think more fans of CrossFit and CrossFitters will enjoy and watch Strongman probably more than vice versa.

Taylor Self (11:34):

Right.

Sevan Matossian (11:35):

That’s a good point. I agree. I agree. I think CrossFitters have bigger penises too in general.

Taylor Self (11:41):

Really? Dude, those guys are huge.

Sevan Matossian (11:44):

Yep. I know.

Taylor Self (11:44):

Just the size of person. I know

Sevan Matossian (11:46):

It’s a buy. Do you think

Taylor Self (11:47):

Your dick’s bigger than half? Thor’s? No shot dude, his dick is your

JR Howell (11:52):

Size.

Sevan Matossian (11:55):

Especially that hat on Ken Walters and the media department. Fine. Okay, let us go. Let’s dig in. Give me big picture here. JR how many events over how many days and what do we know? Give me the high level view if you

JR Howell (12:12):

Can please. Four days, one event on Thursday. Nine total six have been announced. Seven have been announced now at this point. Two remaining and a lot of information, a lot of unknowns though. A, there’s a schedule here. So they released Texas heavy today, seat at the bar and the circus we have, we do not know what the dual three or the cleanup is.

Sevan Matossian (12:42):

So event five, the dual three and what was the other one? We don’t know

JR Howell (12:47):

The finale. Nine.

Sevan Matossian (12:50):

Okay. And that’s called the cleanup.

JR Howell (12:53):

Sure.

Sevan Matossian (12:54):

Okay. And what are those events where they, what’s that called when

JR Howell (13:00):

You

Sevan Matossian (13:01):

Whittle your way down from all the athletes? What’s that called when they do that?

JR Howell (13:05):

So that’s an elimination style event that they’ve done. This would be the third year in a row and that’s one of the ones we don’t know. There was the dual, which was Zeus Pro heavy double unders, squat snatches and a sandbag load to a pedestal. And then last year was legless rope climb, overhead squat, sandbag carry.

Sevan Matossian (13:22):

Okay, so we’re going to assume that Saturday in the middle of the day event five is when they say the dual, it’s another elimination event.

JR Howell (13:30):

Yeah, you would imagine. So if we go a few years past, probably depending on what kind of how OG you are, maybe

Sevan Matossian (13:40):

A

JR Howell (13:41):

Sprint chipper or a triplett, whichever one you want to think about it. And probably some sort of rope, whether it’s a climbing rope or a jump rope, possibly a horizontal displacement type movement like a carry, maybe a wheelbarrow, something where you’re moving an object from A to B. That’s just really exciting to watch.

Sevan Matossian (14:04):

Okay, let’s just start with five and then we’ll skip over it on the way back since we started Chase time domain for event five, the individual heat. Are the duals always under 60 seconds? Yeah,

JR Howell (14:15):

It’s like a speed team. Ladder speed snatch ladder. It has to be fast. There’s an element of if you miss an

JR Howell (14:24):

Execution

JR Howell (14:25):

Error, you’re out. It’s not hugely fitness based but it’s execution based and yeah, 30 to 60

JR Howell (14:31):

Seconds.

JR Howell (14:34):

Power out worth five

JR Howell (14:35):

Rounds,

JR Howell (14:35):

A lot of power.

Sevan Matossian (14:37):

Taylor, any reason to get into the discussion of whether they’re fair or not? Because the guy who’s out first has to do less work for the day

JR Howell (14:46):

Typically at Rogue. It to me hasn’t been an issue

Taylor Self (14:51):

In terms of the movements programmed and the volume of them. I think there was an argument to be made for the Dubai elimination workout, which was like biker and overhead squats where it was a bit of volume for the people that were advancing from round to round. But I don’t think it rogue, its been an issue. I mean year one it was the heavy rope double under three squat snatches with 2 0 5 and one sandbag load last year. I can’t remember the rep count of overhead squats, but was it 1 35, right? Was it like 10 or 15?

JR Howell (15:20):

10.

Taylor Self (15:20):

10. Yeah, that’s not a lot. And

JR Howell (15:22):

Year one though was the finale, which a lot of people would argue that’s the best place to put something.

Taylor Self (15:26):

Exactly. I love it.

Sevan Matossian (15:28):

And that was my next question. How do you guys feel about the place, where has it been placed? So I was going to ask, is it always event number five?

Taylor Self (15:35):

No, it’s not always Event number five.

Sevan Matossian (15:37):

Why would they put it there? Why don’t they put it at the finale? It’s an exciting finale, right?

Taylor Self (15:40):

It looks like event number five is going to be Saturday afternoon. You could imagine that’s probably good of you in the stadiums. The most crowded.

JR Howell (15:48):

Yeah. I remember last year when we were there, there was a ton of people there to watch that there felt like there were more people in the stands watching that than there were even maybe watching the log one rep Max clean and press.

Sevan Matossian (16:03):

So we’re no complaints. We like this event. I’m excited about it. It’s one of the things I’m most excited about. Rogue. I love this van. Do you guys have any issues with this one?

Taylor Self (16:12):

No.

JR Howell (16:12):

I What it, just trying to see what it’s, there’s some movements that we’re waiting on that historically rogue programs, like I said, I mean possibly a jump rope. I think it’s going to be a thruster this time. We still need a fast lighter squat. Maybe a moderate load squat. There’s only 15 back squats that have been released so far. Do you want that in the dual though?

Taylor Self (16:37):

What about a hang cluster or a hang squat? Clean. I could see them.

Sevan Matossian (16:42):

That was the problem last year.

JR Howell (16:44):

I would like to see a thruster at 180 5 in that sweet spot.

Sevan Matossian (16:51):

In the dual or just at Rogue?

JR Howell (16:53):

If they were going to put it in the dual, I think it should be at least that heavy.

Taylor Self (16:57):

I could see them doing a hang squat clean. What would you think about a hang cluster? I like that movement for five

Sevan Matossian (17:04):

Reps. Hang cluster. What’s a hang cluster? A

Taylor Self (17:05):

Hang squaw, clean thruster. Like a five rep at 1 65. That just seems like a Josh Bridges or Chris Speer type of movement.

JR Howell (17:14):

The only thing I would push back on in a movement like that based on the movements that we know is that there’s already a lot of hinging. So you have 120 power snatches, you have a one rat max deadlift of some kind. You’re starting the workout

Sevan Matossian (17:28):

Carrying

JR Howell (17:29):

A ruck that’s a hundred pounds. There’s going to be a lot of low back fatigue even after one

Taylor Self (17:36):

Dude. That’s my

JR Howell (17:36):

I You still have those. You still have those fat bells, which is essentially like a double snatch. Like a double kettlebell snatch without the handle. It

Taylor Self (17:43):

Says ground to overhead. So I You think they’re going to snatch that? I think they’re going to clean and jerk it. Yeah, there’s no fucking way.

JR Howell (17:49):

I’m curious if they’re allowed to stand wide and kind of bring ’em in between their legs or if, what

Sevan Matossian (17:54):

Event are you guys referencing? What are

JR Howell (17:56):

Referencing? We have to keep on the outside. The

Taylor Self (17:56):

Fat bowels is at four.

Sevan Matossian (17:58):

Okay.

JR Howell (17:59):

Hold on hands. Event seven.

Sevan Matossian (18:03):

Okay, hold on. We’ll get to that. Okay. Event five. Exciting. Cool. There’s one you’re not going to miss. That’s the one Last year there were some hiccups with it. I can’t remember exactly what happened. I think it was last year, but rogue remedied it fantastically. Well. I didn’t even mind how long it took to pull that one off last year. I did not mind that at all. I love the camera work, but there was an athlete that got pushed out who shouldn’t have been pushed out and they let her go by herself or something and I thought that was cool too. Pretty sure that was

JR Howell (18:33):

Alexis rap. Yeah, it was rti wasn’t it? And

Sevan Matossian (18:36):

That was last year. Oh, I got to give a training. Think Tank a plug and Alexis RTI a plug. They’ve just released a video. It’s called the most cringe video we’ve ever made. You have to see it. Kudos to Alexis Raptors for leaning into her issues for why she had to pull out a rogue. She’s a wonderful human being. Okay, event number one. Nine events. Anything else you want to say before we dig into this? Is Rogue obligated to do something heavy by obligated? I use the word loosely. I know they’re not obligated to anyone, but do they traditionally cover a wide range of time domains? We know they cover a wide range of modalities. Is there anything that you’d like to say about rogue in general?

Taylor Self (19:25):

People typically view it as the heavy event, the heavy test or the heavy competition. I think so far seeing the workouts, there’s a lot of load, but I love it. It looks, it just looks so fucking awesome.

Sevan Matossian (19:40):

What do you mean? So they’re staying true to that. They take pride in that. They know that. And you’re saying there’s validity to it

Taylor Self (19:47):

For sure. It’s hard to look at these workouts and say it’s not, but at the same time there’s so much challenging gymnastics that it’s hard to be upset about it either. I’m not looking at it and being like, oh, this is so big guy, strong man, whatever bias. There’s fucking 80 handstand pushups in a workout. That’s a lot of handstand pushups, dude. So I’m not saying it’s the heavy event and it’s crazy biased and it’s, there are 10 peg boards, 80 handstand pushups, however many fat bar muscle ups. There’s a lot of hard shit. The killer cage.

Sevan Matossian (20:27):

Okay, I didn’t see this workout. This is fucking crazy. This is what,

Taylor Self (20:32):

Dude, this is the coolest workout ever

Sevan Matossian (20:34):

In Berkeley where I went to school or I didn’t go to school there in Berkeley where I grew up, the Asian kids were required to ruck 80 pounds of books back and forth from the age of five.

JR Howell (20:46):

The books are so heavy.

Sevan Matossian (20:47):

It was crazy.

Taylor Self (20:48):

Dude. Asian book Ruck. That should be an event. You should have a competition. The Asian book Ruck

Sevan Matossian (20:53):

Smartest Kids in the school. My goodness. Okay, is this for real? A one mile ruck.

JR Howell (20:58):

The

Sevan Matossian (20:58):

Dudes are going to run a mile with a hundred pounds in their back. Talk to me about this chase. Do they have to take, will they take that off? You think? There’s dudes who will keep a hundred pound rough on them for an entire mile. Really?

JR Howell (21:10):

Yeah, it’s just a mile.

Sevan Matossian (21:14):

I remember back in the day at Craig Howard’s gym in 2008, there was an event, I don’t know what it was called, but it was some sort of test and it was carry a body weight bag for a mile without putting it down. Do you guys remember that test?

Taylor Self (21:27):

Yeah, I’ve done that.

Sevan Matossian (21:28):

What is that test called? It’s something,

Taylor Self (21:30):

I dunno what it’s called. I’m just in the mile sandbag carry with a 200

Sevan Matossian (21:33):

And did you put it down

Taylor Self (21:35):

Like four times?

Sevan Matossian (21:36):

Yeah. There’s one thoughts on this. Do we know anything about a time domain? Do people do this? Is this over-programmed? This looks insane to me. How can there be? Wait, I don’t even understand this. Oh, so you ruck a mile with that, then you go to a lighter ruck?

JR Howell (21:52):

Yeah, yeah. Or you just unload it like they did at

Taylor Self (21:56):

The games. For

Sevan Matossian (21:57):

People who are listening, this is called event one Texas heavy, one mile ruck with a hundred pounds, then an 800 meter ruck, half a mile with 45 pounds, and then a one mile run with nothing, and then a sled bag pool to finish of 125 pounds. Is that up the hill?

Taylor Self (22:13):

I would imagine that’s up the hill.

JR Howell (22:16):

The picture that bill posted on with Katie. Yeah.

Taylor Self (22:19):

I would imagine like 33 minutes on the fast end and 40 just over 40 on the slow I feel.

Sevan Matossian (22:25):

Chase, your first thoughts when you see this sucker, what are you thinking?

JR Howell (22:29):

It’s how they like to start this event. I like the rock. I’m curious if it’s everyone’s wearing a 45 and 30 pound ruck, which is pretty traditional for rucking and they have an additional sandbag they might be carrying on top of that.

Taylor Self (22:45):

You know what I would like to see is for them to wear one of those fucking exo type things with the weight plate on the back.

JR Howell (22:53):

Oh, Josh has one of those.

Taylor Self (22:55):

He loves it. I know. That’s why I want to see it. I want to see him use that in an event. I think it would be super cool.

JR Howell (23:00):

I like it. It’s long. You start the things off and I like the progressive lighter loads for the ruck. I mean these will all be somewhat, they’ll all be runs and then you get lighter and you half it and then you drop the weight and then you got a clean mile to get to the sled bag pole. I like it. It’s going to be a fun. I’m curious where the ruck and runs are going to be because if it’s a stadium and people get to see this, is it just going to be within the stadium as they do it like two laps, one lap, two laps, and then pull it up the hill,

Sevan Matossian (23:33):

Jr. Have you ever seen anything like this at an event, at a CrossFit? No.

JR Howell (23:39):

No. I

Taylor Self (23:39):

Mean the closest thing to it I would guess would be the ruck from 2019.

JR Howell (23:44):

But

Sevan Matossian (23:45):

The CrossFit games,

JR Howell (23:45):

Sure. Yeah, but even that didn’t end. My question is how far is the last part? Is it just at the bottom of the hill and they’re dragging it up? Is it at the beginning of the grid and they’re going to drag it flat through the monkey bars under Zeus all the way? I would love to know how long that is because even in a workout that’s 30 plus minutes, you may have a group of five, a group of 10 that are all within a minute. And we’ve seen in the past on workouts, at the games workouts at semifinals that have a sled pull push variety. Sometimes those minute leads can just evaporate on something like that if they’re just not able to move it. And that’s really just a mass moves mass type thing. The load doesn’t look crazy. So 1 25, 100 doesn’t look like it will be

Sevan Matossian (24:36):

Super

JR Howell (24:36):

Difficult but up a hill, I mean that’s nasty.

Sevan Matossian (24:39):

Do you think someone’s going to do that one mile ruck with the a hundred pounds in under 15 minutes?

Taylor Self (24:44):

No, not under 15.

JR Howell (24:46):

No, I think so.

Taylor Self (24:48):

I don’t think under 15

JR Howell (24:50):

With a hundred pounder. Okay. I think so. I haven’t seen a major cross competition do this, but I’ve done a local comp that had a five K run. Everybody had to run, wear a 30 pound pack and then as a team carry a hundred pound bag and we couldn’t carry it as a trio or the four of us. So I just carried it myself for the

Sevan Matossian (25:11):

Last two miles. And how long did that take? Crazy.

Taylor Self (25:16):

I guess it depends on what you said, what they’re carrying. Is it just a hundred pound backpack or is it like a 45 pound ruck and a 65 pound sand? I don’t know.

JR Howell (25:23):

I think on the back would make it tougher if you couldn’t have a load on top of your shoulders.

Sevan Matossian (25:28):

It’s four miles per hour. Think of it on treadmill. Four miles per hour would be 15 minutes with a hundred pound on your back. Yeah, that that’s

Taylor Self (25:36):

Right. Maybe I’m crazy.

Sevan Matossian (25:37):

I don’t think so. I don’t think you’re crazy. I think people are underestimated. Has anyone here ever worn a hundred pound ruck?

Taylor Self (25:43):

I’ve a one mile with a hundred

JR Howell (25:44):

Pound people in the world.

Sevan Matossian (25:46):

I agree. I agree.

Taylor Self (25:48):

I’m trying to compare it to my one mile with the 200 and that was like 29,

JR Howell (25:51):

But was it like you had to carry it on your shoulder? It was a sandbag. Yeah. So this is going to be a pack at minimum. At the minimum it’s going to be a 45 and 30 pound pack. It’s clipped in the chest, it’s clipped across the weight. Maybe they have an additional loading on the back. It’s going to be easier than that. What you did, what you did was incredibly heavy and awkward to carry for that amount of time. I feel like whatever this setup would be easier than what you did.

Taylor Self (26:16):

But do you think they try to go under 15 minutes with everything that comes after it? I don’t know.

JR Howell (26:21):

I think it’s set up. It’s set up so that you can build speed. Yeah,

Taylor Self (26:26):

I think this is a cool workout because it is so reliant on psychological tolerance

JR Howell (26:31):

For sure.

Taylor Self (26:32):

It is 100%. Who wants to hurt

Sevan Matossian (26:34):

Alex Bridgeforth Army Standard is 15 minute mile. They’ll all be under 15. Not with a hundred pound ruck dude.

Taylor Self (26:41):

Yeah,

JR Howell (26:42):

The Army

Taylor Self (26:42):

Standard with a hundred pound rock. You’re talking about a 20 pound ruck. All these fat kids joining the army nowadays.

Sevan Matossian (26:47):

Okay, here we go. Bailey, Dena Gore’s website. The long range ruck says you can fit a 45 pound plus a 30 pound plate plus more room for sandbags inside the main compartment.

JR Howell (26:58):

Seems like too much stuff to deal with in the middle of an event,

Taylor Self (27:02):

I would imagine.

JR Howell (27:03):

I can see him dropping a bag.

Taylor Self (27:04):

That’s what I felt like. I felt like to me they would have a 45 pound ruck on and a 65 pound bag or a 55 pound bag

Sevan Matossian (27:12):

On top. Jay Harle, the Armenian done 24 miles with a hundred pounds. Hey dude, your feet must’ve been like

JR Howell (27:17):

Destroyed.

Taylor Self (27:18):

That’s insane.

Sevan Matossian (27:19):

Destroyed.

Taylor Self (27:20):

They have those long GORUCK sandbags that are like feed sacks. We have a bunch of ’em at our gym and they have ones that can weigh 65 pounds. So to me it would be easy if they just wore the ruck that they’re going to wear for the 800 and they had a sandbag on top of it, like a long one, but I don’t know.

JR Howell (27:40):

They did that in a west Coast, didn’t they? In Vegas,

Taylor Self (27:44):

Right? The West Coast Classic. That’s exactly how they did it. They had a ruck in a bag.

Sevan Matossian (27:49):

We just got a link. Let me see what this is in real time. It says 2019 Rogue Invitational Go Ruck live stream. That was just a

Taylor Self (28:03):

Bag I believe.

Sevan Matossian (28:07):

And we’re hearing that it was 125 pounds plus 30 and they lightly jogged for the most part. Oh yeah. And was that a team? There’s no fucking way they carried that with a light jog. Alright, anything else you guys want to add to this incredible event? I guess that mile without anything is the recovery mile, right?

Taylor Self (28:28):

Oh wow. Look at these boys. Oh yeah. That’s how the 200 was for me. And

Sevan Matossian (28:33):

Whoa, bro. So are you saying that’s 155 pounds right there that those guys have on them?

Taylor Self (28:37):

155? No, 125.

JR Howell (28:40):

Well, they’re wearing a,

Taylor Self (28:42):

Oh wow. Yeah. Yeah.

Sevan Matossian (28:44):

Let me see that play a little bit of that. I don’t think rogue’s going to fuck with us if we play it.

Taylor Self (28:48):

Oh, is that Saxon? He looks like he’s hurting.

Sevan Matossian (28:51):

And so this was for 400 meters. Wow, that’s faster than I thought. That’s incredible. Is that Fraser? Yep. Wow.

Taylor Self (29:03):

Yeah, but that’s 400 meters. A whole lot different than a mile.

Sevan Matossian (29:06):

I agree. Anyone want to change? Anyone want to change their position? What’s the fastest? What’s the fastest chase?

Taylor Self (29:13):

Probably under 15. You’re right. Yeah. Well 12. That’s what I would think. Fastest, but I don’t think they’re winning. I don’t know, man.

Sevan Matossian (29:22):

Oh, that was a smooth move that he threw it right down right in front of Matt, by the way. I liked that.

Taylor Self (29:26):

Oh, that was Hoberg.

JR Howell (29:27):

It’s 155 total. This is a hundred total. It’s a big difference.

Sevan Matossian (29:31):

And every time you put it down you got to pick it up. That’s heinous.

Taylor Self (29:34):

Oh, he’s an idiot

JR Howell (29:36):

Bear. And that mag is just a beast. Like I said, Taylor, was that close to your bag when you did that?

Taylor Self (29:43):

I mean, we had a standard 200 pound strongman bag filled with sand to the brimm. So it’s kind of shaped like that. A little shorter

JR Howell (29:50):

And

Taylor Self (29:50):

Just, yeah, super awkward. Laying it long ways across the back.

Sevan Matossian (29:56):

Okay. Anything you guys want to add to this

Taylor Self (29:58):

Awesome workout?
